Lucy O Neill is a plain-Jane New York PR assistant with a tiny apartment, a dead-end job, and a pair of annoyingly perfect roommates. Nothing exciting ever happens to her, until one night at a neighborhood pub . . . Lewis Mephisto is tall, handsome, and hot. Very hot. He meets her gaze through the crowd, a wicked grin on his lips, an irresistible invitation in his eyes. He s Mr. Right Times Ten. Sophisticated, wealthy, sexy, and completely devoted to her, body and soul. So what s her problem? Can t she handle dating the Devil? Lewis looks at me hard for a moment in the darkness, then nods. So you ve figured the whole thing out, he says ruefully. You re Yeah, he says. Say it, I say in a trembling voice. I want you to say it. He reaches over and switches his bedside lamp on, and suddenly the room is flooded with warm light. Then he looks back at me and shrugs. I m Satan, he says. He looks so boyishly vulnerable, sitting there shirtless amidst the rumpled sheets, one sock on and one off, blinking sleep out of his blue eyes, that I want to laugh. Of course, I also want to cry. I can feel the tears welling up in the corners of my eyes, but I manage to keep my voice steady. And you ve been all this time, you ve been trying to steal my soul? Not steal it, exactly, he says. Just . . . lead you into temptation. Lia Romeo is a playwright, novelist, and author of the highly-praised humor book, 11,002 Things to Be Miserable About. Dating the Devil is her first novel.
I picked up this book as part of the Kindle Daily Deal on a whim and am I glad I did!
What fun! I love the twist the author puts on the devil (Satan, Mephistopheles, Lucifer) where he is not the embodiment of evil. He is a necessary evil, so to speak.
There are so few characters that are so alive to me I want to re-visit them: Eve and Roarke from the In Death series by J.D. Robb, Teren and Emma from the Conversion series by S.C. Stephens, the Vorkosigan family from the Vorkosigan saga by Lois McMaster Bujold, and now Lucy and Lewis from Dating the Devil by Lia Romeo.
The story was different and interesting. It was a good effort for a fiction debut. But it wasn’t my cup of tea. The writing style might appeal to others. It was upbeat and very quirky.
One of the downsides to the novel was the constant references to brand names and celebrity names. It was meant to be dazzling, but it made the story seem superficial to me. There are moments where Lucy dresses up in a $4000 Dior dress, where people are allowed to sip champagne in the waiting room while they wait for their partners to come out, anyway, the point is, after she dresses up for dinner, gets her make up done, people look at them and say that they make a very beautiful couple. A very nice compliment, but a little superficial if it took $4000+ to get them there.
I liked this book, its not too heavy, but light and entertaining.
A perfect read, for your summer holiday. With a few giggles and an original spin on the romance genre.
Lia has managed to create a likeable heroine in Lucy, and even though the hero is the Devil I though Lewis was great. I would have liked there to have been a little more character development with regards to Lucy's girlfriends in the book, and the sex scenes were a little rushed, but it kept my interest, and I would happily read another Lia Romeo book in the future.
It was a privilege to be provided with a copy of this book through Netgalley, in thanks I have provided the above honest review.
This is one of those cheesy, predictable books where the characters rarely show signs of having more than two dimensions, the plot never throws up any surprises and just occasionally you find yourself skimming a scene because it’s just so cringy.
But it’s also one of those books that makes up for all that by being just good fun.
There’s very little here that you won’t have seen a hundred times before. Even the interesting concept of the Devil and whether or not he is evil is brushed over in favour of steamy scenes in hallways and lifts and offices and just about everywhere else. Background characters have problems you can guess long before Lucy figures them out and the whole thing in general is as familiar and comfortable as driving home.
But for a light bit of fluff it achieves everything it sets out to. Charming, attractive lead male, hapless, underconfident lead female, lots of fairytale princess scenes, emotional highs and lows, and a feel-good funny ending to leave you with a smile on your face. A perfect bit of summer beach reading.
In one sitting. Compulsively readable and fun. A clever and super funny mix of The Clique, Gossip Girl, The Sex Lives of College Girls, and something way better than Twilight. Many lines had me laughing out loud. Wish this had another life on TV!
This is one of those books in which feelings fluctuate in relation to history. At first I thought it was hilarious. A single woman in her 27 years that never has lucky to get a boyfriend, in the middle of New York, land of opportunity to romancing. Mainly because she lives with two friends who seem to have no problem like that. One is engaged but no hesitation in betraying the fiance when going to a club, the other does not want to compromise and go out every night with a different guy. It seems that only Lucy, after be cheated on of the eternal boyfriend, can not find anyone.
Until she decides to take a break in relationships - this after having signed up for all the relationships sites existing, have met a number of different men and still being single - and then BANG!, She meets the perfect guy.
Only one problem ... big problem ... hot problem ... INFERNAL problem!! The Mr. Right is the devil in the flesh and blood.
Lewis is gorgeous, tall, HOT, kisses like no one, fucks even better, wealthy, lives in a big apartment, but it's not exactly the guy you'd like to introduce to your parents as your future husband ...
The plot is interesting and has several scenes where I found myself laughing a lot. On the other hand, had a scene in which he takes her to a benefit ball .. Damn! She already knew who he was ... She needs to act like that? I did not like.
But then she realizes that he really wanted to stay with her (and not do anything sinister with her soul).
And that up and down in my opinion about whether I was enjoying the book or not, I read whole book and thought the story was cute. It is a light - even with the devil as the protagonist - and short book. I would not say the ending was predictable, it could have ended differently, anyway, the reading worth.
The characters are interesting. The pace of the story is good. Positive point: it's funny in many parts, and it is interesting to see the "devil" show was a normal person who wants to have a relationship. Negative point: at times the narrative was a bit tedious when Lucy remembered the past.
A romance with a plot and a synopsis rather interesting and original on paper. Unfortunately, I have not been moved by the result.
The reader follows Lucy and her two girlfriends in their outings in search of love or a one-night stand. Mel is engaged but appreciates some casual tongues exchanges with strangers behind the back of her husband-to-be. Nat enjoy life by changing guys every day. Until she meet a man to whom she is really attracted and regret her slutty behavior. Lucy seeks a soulmate and meet...Satan.
Falling in love is accepting the imperfections of the other. But can Lucy overlook the King of Hell's occupations and build a relationship with the one she loves?
This could have been funny. This could have plunged the reader into the underworld with an explosion of the author's imagination about her vision of the hell and its inhabitants. However, for my taste, Lia Romeo was too retained, too superficial in her background descriptions while focusing too much on the party times.
So, the romance is nice but not enough to make you sigh aloud and the devil's description are too overflown. An in between that makes the story a little bland. It's a real shame because the idea was promising.
However, I read this novel without getting bored. The style is good, and I did not find lengths. I would have just enjoyed more details, more spice. But even if the magic has not operated, I will definitively follow the next book of this author.
Lucy is a 20-something living in NY City and working at a low-paying job at a boutique PR firm. After her long-time boyfriend dumps her, she moves into a small apartment with her two best girlfriends from college. Nat is an independently wealthy, gorgeous model who has sex with a different guy every night. Mel is an 80-hour-per-week management consultant who is engaged to the VP of a software company but engages in drunken make-out sessions with strangers she meets while bar hopping with Lucy and Nat. Lucy's dating disasters are legion, and she is just about to give up on dating in NYC entirely when she meets the man of her dreams. Too bad he's a real devil.
Readers who enjoy zany, paranormal chick lit will be delighted with this book. A staple of chick lit is dating disasters in NYC, but adding a supernatural element to it allows the story to go into wildly unconventional arenas for comedy. Lucy has an endearing naivete that makes it believable that she could desire a relationship with a good-looking man who is attentive in and outside of bed to such a degree that she allows herself to risk eternal consequences to achieve it.
Fans of Infernal Affairs by Jane Heller and the Demon Princess series by Michelle Rowen will especially enjoy this book.
Dating the Devil’s synopsis sounding promising and the cover was cute, I thought why not. I thought this book would be something different than my usual reads so I gave it a shot.
This book was just ok. I liked the different approach to the romance, having never read a book involving the devil. I would not call this book paranormal, rather romance with a twist. I loved the idea of the devil being romantic, hot, and rich, but he had a rather sad quality to him giving him a redeemable quality. To read the rest of this review go to www.bsreviewers.blogspot.com
I really enjoyed this book and finished it less than three days. I think the thing I liked best was how much it reminded me of my twenties -- it really has the feel of truth. (I've been to Peculier Pub more times than I'd like to admit.... ;)) The characters were engaging and the plot was fun. I especially liked the side plots about the narrator's friends' dating exploits... All in all a really fun chick-lit read with an interesting supernatural twist. I'll read more by this author for sure!
Wow this was an awesome book! I didn't expect to like it so much! It was a fun, cute and hot read! There were times I didn't like Satan very much. But I also found him fascinating, even cute and kinda sexy. I think Lucy and Lewis were perfect as a couple. Hot and passionate and kinda cute. And their encounters were so fiery! Ehrm...quite literally one time. I really enjoyed reading this book and I can't believe I didn't come across it sooner. Cause this is exactly the kind of genre I love reading. Really, really recommended!
Lucy O'Neill has just about cut off men from her life, after he ex dumps her and a slew of bad dates from hell, she can't think of anything worse than jumping back in the dating pool. Of course when you don't wish for something to happen, the opportunity usually jumps into your lap. Meet Lewis Mephisto all the things Lucy could wish for in a perfect man, except one thing he is the devil, satan, and all that entails.
If you like a little paranormal in your romance and enjoy stretching the bounds of realism just a little, this is a great pick. In the end, it’s a cute, entertaining romance about an everyday woman dating the devil, and should be handled as such. - Full review available at http://romanticreadsandsuch.wordpress...
This book was a lot of fun and not at all what I expected. It's fast-paced, and the heroine is good-hearted without being a total sap. The dialogue is fun and articulate, and her friends are...well, the way real friends are. Flawed, just like us. It's totally believable that the three of them would share an apartment in New York.
Now I wasn't sure where this one was going to go. I didn't expect much and although it was a decent read I wasn't all the sucked in and impressed. It just wasn't my type of book I guess. I know that there are many out there who will love but it just wasn't my cup of tea I guess you could say. For the man being the devil I was expecting more; not sure what exactly but more than what I got.
I thought this was a cute read. Different than other contemporary romances - definitely a unique storyline. I enjoyed the fact that it was something different than what I've been reading lately and would definitely read more from this author.
This was okay, but not great. The story was fairly predictable, and there wasn't much to the plot. Overall, it was okay at best, but not one I'd read again.
