Beautiful, brilliant Veronica Lane, M.D. finds herself the subject of a murder investigation after her patient is found poisoned in the hospital. When the only witness to the murder turns up dead and the police arrest her, Dr. Lane is forced to try to solve the case herself. With her reputation, her freedom, and possibly her life on the line, Dr. Lane hunts down the killer. Her only help: an underage hooker, a local reporter, and her handsome attorney. But even she is shocked when she finds out how close the murderer really is.
Gabrielle Black is a Georgia native working as a family doctor north of Atlanta. She holds a degree in English Literature, which naturally led to an exciting career in medicine. This is her first work of fiction. She lives with her family and a menagerie of crazy farm animals. Visit her website at www.veronicalanemd.com to learn more about the world of Dr. Veronica Lane.
I enjoyed "Treating Murder". Dr. Black has created a good foundation upon which to build the Veronica Lane series, and I'm looking forward to the second book, "Dead Wrong".
Veronica has had a patient named Sarah for many years who has MS. Despite all treatments, she is getting worse. Veronica proposes a radical treatment as a last resort. The insurance company doesn't want to cover the expenses but eventually has to back down. But Sarah suddenly dies and it's discovered she was poisoned ... and Veronica is arrested for the murder. Veronica, along with her lawyer, Jamie, try to figure out who, in fact, murdered Sarah.
This is the first book I've read by this author. I enjoyed the story and thought it was interesting. For the most part, I liked the writing style but thought it could have been tighter. I found it rambled sometimes. The writing is in the first person, in Veronica's voice, though I found at that least once it switched to third person when she was in the scene.
I liked Veronica. I found it a bit hard to believe, though, that once she discovered who her ex-husband, Steve, had an affair with that she wasn't more pissed. She didn't seem to have any reaction at all which I found odd.
This review is from: Treating Murder: Book One of the Veronica Lane, M.D. series (medical thriller) (Kindle Edition) I was given this book by the author for an honest review.
Dr. Lane's patient suddenly takes a turn for the worse and dies while being prepared for an experimental treatment. When next of kin is notified, they decide they want an autopsy so they can sue for malpractice. But, the patient didn't die of medical neglect...she died of arsenic poisoning!
There are lots of twists and turns in this story. Dr. Lane wants to find out what happened to her patient, and finds herself arrested for murder!
Although the story was good, I did not find the characters to be very well developed. I also found myself wondering what some of the scenes had to do with anything. The ending I did not see coming which was a big plus in a murder mystery! This is the first book in the series and I do hope the author develops Dr. Lane better, so we will care what she does.
I think this was the author's first. I really liked that it stuck with the mystery. The mystery aspect in that way was great. I did not care for the characters in this story. The protagonist as a DR did not seem to have any sense, the lawyer falls for the dimwit Dr overnight and breaches ethics with client and professional relationship? The ex did not fit how portrayed in the book with the memories of past events given. Maybe I just did not see it all correctly and I seem to be annoyed by books lately. Low 3 RATING. The moving along action was wonderful, but I just cannot get into cheap sex like this with no control. Most people do not care and think it is a okay, but it cheapens the book to me.
OMG! First off, I received this book as part of a giveaway in exchange for an honest review!
Thank you so much Gods of all bookdom for giving me this book! It was amazing! The plot was right up there with any other Suspense/Drama and I cannot wait until the next book (Soon please)! The plot had me guessing, and loving each character, except the ones who were bad/supposed to be bad. Each character served it's purpose without being in the way too much, or being annoying. I would LOVE to see this as a movie! I see ER meets Good Wife... I could not put this book down at all! It was great!
This was a fun thriller. I guessed the killer pretty early in the book and the why but it was still a fun read with a lot of action. I loved the subplot with Missy and can't wait to read more in the series.
Veronica Lane has been treating long term patient Sarah Summer for multiple sclerosis since the start of her career as a medical practitioner. When her latest treatment fails, Veronica has only one idea left - an experimental treatment with a high risk of failure. But when Sarah dies, Veronica blames herself. Right up until the autopsy proves that Sarah died from arsenic poisoning. And then she can't help but be drawn into a case that seems straightforward but is anything but.
This was a bit of a hidden gem in terms of potential. The characters are a bit lacklustre but the plot more than makes up for it. It starts slow and steadily builds up speed until the end has your brain exploding with all the twists and turns that keep coming. That said, the characters aren't bad - just have some stupid motivations and actions and are not overly likable. There was only a little bit of romance, the story mainly focuses on the mystery. The changing viewpoint could've been a real fail but I rather liked the points that it transitioned at.
Veronica Lane was fascinating. I liked her dogged determination and drive to make things better. The rest of the cast was fine, just not particularly memorable. Overall it was an enjoyable read that kept me guessing who was guilty and managed to surprise me with the culprit. 3.5 stars, rounded to 4.
Review: This is an entertaining book. I do like who done it books. There were some twists however I had it figured out real early but I have read a lot of them and few surprise me anymore. The blurb I found a little misleading as the young hooker really plays no integral part in the story. Another unnecessary person seemed to be Reid. I think the author was just using him as a red herring but it just seem to hang there and accomplish nothing. One more thing I would like to point out is the editing. I see so many books come across my computer that could be so much better if the author thought enough of their work to get a professional edit. Sure there are mistakes in most books but not as many as in many self-published books. It is not the readers who should have to sit and figure out what words should be in the sentence. This book gets a 3 star mainly for the editing. Hopefully the author puts some serious thought in seeking an edit before the next one comes out.
Well titled book and the first of the Veronica Lane, M.D. Series. The patient that Dr. Lane is treating dies unexpectedly and the Dr. is suspected. I can't tell you why...it would spoil the book for you. All through the book other suspects pop up and look plausible. I don't even want to list the possible suspects. Let's just say that Dr. Lane is not the murderer -- which you knew anyway otherwise Ms. Black would not have an entire series about her. :-)
I truly enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more in this series.
Treating murder was a good read. It has to do with the murder of one of Veronica Lane's patient. I could not pin point the murderer until the very end, unlike some books that I have read where it is fairly easy to figure out who did what to whom, which is why I really enjoyed this book. The characters are all easy to get to know, some you really like and others you really do not like. Just becareful who you trust.
I found the story enjoyable and Dr. Lane certainly is worth reading about. If the good Doctor was as careless in her craft as the editor of this book though, she'd be up for malpractice lawsuits. I wanted to rate this four stars, for there are some well written segments, but the editing made some reading it less enjoyable. If the editing improves, novel #2 will likely be worth the read.
