Really enjoyed this book!

I have a soft spot in my heart for Steiger. He's one of the few remaining members of the old guard. He has written a crazy number of books and articles, spanning a number of decades. All the while, I have never heard him utter a bad word about anyone else in his field. I think that says a lot about his character and the integrity of his research. He does his own thing, does it well, and leaves other writers to do the same. This book is no exception. This collection of stories range from the corny to down right scary. There is something in this book for everyone.

I have always been interested in the paranormal from my naive childhood being spooked by Sightings to my more skeptical but open minded adulthood.
Ultimately, I like good stories that stir the imagination about what is out there and what it means for us humans. Whether the stories are true or not are almost besides the point. If they captivate me, I enjoy them.
Very little in this book is captivating or believable or enjoyable to read.
Each chapter centers around a certain paranormal phenomenon (aliens, cryptids, UFO's, ghosts, psychic visions, etc).
Most of these chapters are collections of first hand accounts with the paranormal. These are, at least to some degree, written by the eye witnesses and not the actual authors of the book, and it shows. They are simply not well told stories.
That wouldn't be so bad if the stories weren't so ludicrous.
I have an open mind to most of these phenomenon, which means I'm open to both possibilities of them being true and false.
But the majority of stories in this book are so out there, it's difficult to get any kind of rational footing in them.
Real eye-rollers tend to focus on otherworldly creatures (not necessarily extra-terrestrials) who form personal relationships with the eyewitnesses. Certain political, social and religious slants to these creatures' messages are also suspect.
The best parts of this book are when the actual authors chime in with some theories as to what is behind all of these paranormal encounters.
I really wish the book was entirely this material, which was much more fun to contemplate.
They keep returning to Jungian and Joseph Campbell theories that perhaps these phenomenon are some aspect of the human psyche that has yet to be explored or understood.
I like the theories they put forth that maybe the SciFi images of these stories are merely the human consciousness way of expressing something we have yet to fully discover about consciousness and the world around us.
Unfortunately, this material becomes more scarce the further into the book you get.
And it's a thought that never gets developed beyond what I've already wrote above. In fact, it's often just repeated.
Sorry believers, but this book didn't do it for me. In the meantime I'll cross my fingers for Sightings to get a home video release.

A casebook taking the perspective that fairies, Bigfoot, aliens, and the like are manifestations of mysterious "extradimensional" entities? This should have been terrific, a refreshing revival of John Keel's theories.
What went wrong? Three things, mainly.
Most of Steiger's informants are people already heavily committed to one form of mysticism or another. They are expecting to have paranormal experiences. As such, they are much less compelling witnesses to the uncanny than non-partisans.
Far too many of the accounts they give are not sober, straightforward reports of anomalous experiences; instead they've been fashioned into stories with all the trappings of (not very good) fiction. Here's a sample: "In the seconds when it [a phantom creature] disappeared at the bed's edge, Johnny did not know whether to feel relief or panic. Had it retreated to his worst nightmare to plague him no more, or was it lurking under his bed waiting for him to come out from under the covers so that it might do its diabolical deeds upon his soft, pink flesh?" Not exactly the sort of material upon which to base a serious, scholarly book!
Finally, there is an almost complete absence of critical thought. It's bad enough that one often suspects that accounts might credibly be explained without resorting to the paranormal, but the Steigers even include material which has long been completely discredited. It's incredible to me that, in 2013, someone is still selling the old yarn about Flight 19 and the Bermuda Triangle, when the story was thoroughly and irretrievably debunked by Larry Kusche nearly thirty years ago. The Steigers discuss Gray Barker, without mentioning the discreditable aspects of his work which have emerged in recent years. I rather get the impression that the Steigers haven't looked at much recent research.
The book is amply illustrated, but with original art, rather than photographic evidence of strange phenomena. There are a few good contributions from witnesses without an axe to grind, but not enough to justify buying the book. What a wasted opportunity!

While familiar with Brad Steiger, it had been years since I had read anything by him. That said, Real Encounters, Different Dimensions and Otherworldy Beings did not disappoint. Steiger has a laid back yet academic style that he uses to present information in a seemingly factual manner. Steiger generally doesn't make any claims to the material he presents, but instead tells the stories of those who eyewitnessed the event and lets the reader draw their own conclusions. Interestingly, Real Encounters is a bit of a departure from that. The style is still there, but with this book the Steigers often firmly place themselves in the action and discuss their own conclusions, thoughts and experiences.

Interesting material here about metaphysical, existential things. Much of what you read is accounts from people other than Brad Steiger - sometimes feels like a collection of stories more than true research. My only complaint is that the pictures accompanying the articles are abstract works of art loosely, if at all, having anything to do with the subject at hand.

What if everything supernatural was caused by aliens? This book is all about the other worldly beings. Peppered with "art" by the same lousy graphic artist. Ugh.

There is a lot of information packed into this book! I found it very informative. Made me want to do some research for more!
This covers many types of alien interactions. Simply believing in aliens doesn’t mean you believe in every report your hear. Regardless of your beliefs, there will be something inside that will touch on it. The ones that don’t, will at a minimum, give you more insight into other ideas and reports.
