An excerpt from The First Dryad Book 2
Willen laughed, but it was not happy. “I want you now more than ever before. I think you have driven me to madness.”
“There is no right side to madness, Willen. Or have you forgotten?”
He licked his lips as though they were dry. “I remember.”
“If you are so angry with me and I am so angry with me, you should stomp away. To prove your point. Or perhaps I should, to prove mine.”
He traced his fingers along the knitting scars on my arms. “I want to take your clothes off.”
My cheeks heated, and I counted myself blessed that he was not looking to see me blush. “But….”
Stormy eyes flicked up at me and then back down in an instant. He saw me after all. “Did you know…that your color changes when you want me to touch you?”
I gasped. “It does not. You are making things up now.”
He brought my hand to his lips and kissed each of my fingers. “I may not listen but I certainly do not lie.” He came closer to me so his arms rested on the bed on either side of me, his chest pressing against my knees. “Are you too cross with me to let me have you?”
“I…am very cross with you.”
“You did not answer my question.”
“I…I always want you. You are the one who does not seem to desire me as much as I—”
He raised himself up to kiss me. Lips on lips, and then the heat of his breath on my neck. I tried not to think of whether it was strange for him to taste someone half covered in regrowth of bark or whether my constant changing alarmed or allured him.
“How do you do it?” he whispered into my ear, his hands cupping me, his Wonder dissolving the very fabric of my dress. “How do you hold all my attention like this?”
When I pulled his shirt over his head, I saw within his chest the throbbing Seed I had placed there. I touched it, watching as it lit beneath my fingers, and Willen groaned.
“Is…it painful?”
“Only when you are in pain, I think.”
I frowned. “But I am always in pain.”
“And I will always know when you are.”
I brought him closer to me, wrapping my legs around his waist. “Then you know I can endure anything.”
“That,” he said, running his hands over the smoothness of my thighs and down to the roughness of my calves, only to find his way higher once more, “is what I am afraid of. That you think you can endure anything. And that you will try to prove it.”
Enjoy the other standalone books in The First Collection, inspired by The First Dryad 1 & 2, each telling a new story of love and fantasy:
Teshelle Combs is the award-winning author of books like The Underglow and the First Collection.
She's well known for her fantasy romance standalones like The First Dryad, The First Stone, The First Nymph, and The First Flame. (Read in any order, listed in order of writing).
Tropes include enemies-to-lovers, forbidden love, arranged marriage, twists & turns, and more.
Dryad 2 dives into more character development that Aia experiences as Theor threatens her love for Willen. Willen's past becomes the biggest threat to his connection with Aia as they flee from the Palace. The Vedan family and mythical creatures test this forbidden love. As Aia and Willen begin to grasp the secrets within the Realm, they grow stronger together. I enjoyed seeing Aia evolve from a Tree ignorant of life to a fearless individual willing to save Willen and her companions. I anticipate reading more of Teshelle Combs's work and adding more pieces to the puzzle she has created since her books intertwine.
"But if doing so meant losing Aia, I would forfeit the crowns of any lands. There were no duties or riches more valuable than the Tree who had grown herself around my very heart." "She was much more... real than anything else. A flower blooming out of darkness. A sun rising with no sky."
This author. I am not sure where her inspiration comes from, but gosh. This idea is so different than other fantasy reads. It is true high fantasy. It has its own world, its own magic with its own rules. Its own magical creatures. The MFC has come so far. She started in book one as a naive and innocent girl, but by the end of book two she really comes into her own. It is a beautiful journey of self discovery and learning to stand up for herself. She also learns to not allow others to put her in the “damsel in distress” box that they so desperately want her to belong in. All of this happens while undergoing horrendous conditions and trials. Character loyalty is tested often and it is hard to know who is batting for what team, right up to the end. Excellent read!
Book 2 picks up right from the end of the first book. You can see how Aia has grown and the progress she has made.
Teshelle Combs does a great job writing high fantasy, and I am loving all of her works. Once again, the world building, characters and storyline was well done!
*I received this as an ARC, and I am leaving an honest and voluntary review*
I have read almost every book in this series. I am seriously loving the series. Aia has really grown on me. I absolutely love this author. I love her writing style and can't wait to see what's next on her list.
I’m obsessed with Aia & Willen and this book (book 2) took us on another wild adventure! Just like the first book, book 2 puts you through all the feels. I was constantly on edge waiting for what was to come. I absolutely loved seeing willen & Aia’s trust in one another unfolded & grow stronger. In the end love conquered all.
The First Dryad Duology by Teshelle Combs has taken us on an extraordinary journey, and the second installment, "The First Dryad Book 2," is a masterpiece. This duology has woven a captivating tale of forbidden love, fantastical creatures, and the enduring strength of its characters.
In "The First Dryad Book 2," we continue to follow the complex and enthralling relationship between Willen and Aia. On the run from his murderous brother, Willen must summon the courage to embrace his love for Aia, who has transformed into a creature the Realm could never have imagined—a Dryad. Aia, on the other hand, battles a world teeming with fantastical monsters, from Dragons to Wyverns, Dwarves to Princes and Princesses, all while fighting for the heart of her Second Prince. The forbidden love between them is as tantalizing as ever, and the consequences of their passion continue to cast a shadow of ruin.
Teshelle Combs has a remarkable gift for crafting intricate, emotionally charged scenes, and the excerpt provided is a testament to her storytelling prowess. The chemistry between Willen and Aia is palpable, their dialogue filled with tension and desire that leaps off the pages. Combs skillfully delves into the depths of their emotions, making us feel every nuance of their connection.
The world-building in this duology is nothing short of breathtaking. Combs paints a vivid and enchanting landscape filled with magical creatures and richly detailed settings. As a reader, you can't help but be transported to this fantastical realm, where every corner is teeming with wonder and danger.
"The First Dryad Book 2" is a mesmerizing continuation of an already exceptional story. I love Teshelle Combs's writing style, and this book she was at her finest, blending sensuality, longing, and tragedy into a spellbinding narrative. This book is a must-read for fans of dark fantasy and forbidden romance, and it delivers a satisfying conclusion to the duology that will leave you haunted and enchanted long after the final page is turned.

The stories of Aia Ana Willen along with many unexpected friends and not so much friends who become key players in this wicked tale. I love the Wonder and Dread of the story!
Aia is many things - she is a Tree, a Dryad, a girl, a woman, a sister, a wife, a Queen and a force to be reckoned with! I live the literal growth of Aia’s character throughout both books, starting as a timid girl who knows nothing about herself or the world, only to grow into a caring, compassionate dryad woman who wants the best for everyone and everything!
I was a bit miffed to not find out anything further regarding the ‘battle’ between Fara and Aia at the end, I felt that was too open ended for me, but maybe I didn’t read between the lines enough? In any case I felt the story came to a close with most things tied up at the end, some definitely not in the way I expected. I definitely would have enjoyed a few more answers though. There were many interesting surprises along the way, and I hope we see Aia and Willen again in another story!
Oh my goodness!!! I did not think this story could go on but Tess did it again! I should have know her genius would show. The female characters in book 2 have such deep and passionate personalities and the twists of their desires keep you on your toes! The love story makes you wish you had the same passion in your life. This book is full of twists and turns. Old characters return. New ones are introduced. Absolutely one of the best!
Really enjoyed this book, it carried on where book 1 left it. Introducing new characters an beings. This was really well written but you left me with another mystery as to what Aia gave up for her forbidden love. An did she retrieve the sword an kill the dragon, it was left as a mystery or its hopefully answered in another book.
I am so in love with this series!! I had the honor of reading it early and it is simply amazing. It's well written, never a dull moment!! Every book I've read of hers is a hit!! Can't wait to dive into the next!!
I love that this book picks up right where the first ends. The twists have you holding onto your seat! The ending is truly a beautiful way to end the dryad series! I also love how we start in book one with a weak little tree and finish book two with a strong powerful tree!
This was a very good sequel. I honestly cannot tell which I liked more. There was so much mystery, many turns and twists and bends in the plot, a lot of character development and some really just funny moments. The ending was a lovely one and even some of the “villains” I liked!
The second and I believe final book of this story. Fade to black sexy scenes, so ya appropriate. I liked the continuation of this story but did get a but confused towards the end. The storyline moves quickly and is a fun read! Great for fantasy lovers.
Magical. Enchanting. Unique. The second book was AMAZING. I couldn’t put it down. Such a beautiful ending, Tess Combs is brilliant!
Days continue to pass and I cannot stop thinking of Aia and Wills story. Such a fantastic adventure! The growth Aia underwent throughout both books has been inspiring.
I’m normally a sequel lover when it comes to books but I truly loved the first book more. This book was good as well, I enjoyed reading it and loved the semi happy ending you get.
I don’t think I can say anything bad about a teshelle combs book though, it is still wonderful book and very much worth the read. Tess has a way with making amazing and unique worlds that are simply wonderful to immerse yourself in.
This concluded Aia and Willen's story and it was just okay. I was expecting a bit more. Much like the first book, there weren't easy transitions from one chapter to another and the POV changed from Aia to Willen without any warning which made some chapters a bit confusing at first.
I feel like I start every review for one of Teshelle Combs' books with an explanation of how I very rarely give out 5 stars - a book has to have quality storytelling in addition to having that special something that keeps it knocking around inside your brain long after the story ends. Every single one of Ms. Combs' books have gotten 5 stars from me, and the second book in Aia's story is no different.
Book 2 focuses on the growth of Aia and Willen, together and as individuals, as they navigate Aia's everchanging status, a Realm facing annihilation, and so. Many. Secrets. The characters, world, and plot are all solidly written, but done with such poetic mastery that it really feels like the story is happening around you, rather than being told "at" you.
One of the things that I've really enjoyed about Ms. Combs' characters across all the books I've read thus far is that as we learn more about each character and their motivations, even the "villains", though perhaps never lovable, become relatable. Another element I loved about Aia and Willen's story is that it doesn't just stop a happily ever after. Real relationships require work in order to grow, and Aia and Willen know this and come to embrace it.
Many of the themes found in the first book are, not surprisingly, still present in book two. Appropriation of resources (human and environmental), explorations of autonomy (on many different levels), and what it means to give when so much has already been taken. I think that a strength of this book is that it can be a touching fantasy, or it can mean so much more - it just depends on how you want to read it.
This second book also introduces a new side character who ranks up there with the best of the best. Quel will leave you in stitches!
For full disclosure, I am coming off of a book hangover from Dryad 1. I was not in the mood for the character development in the first half of dryad two. After I got over my temper tantrum, I realize that I missed part of what I wanted the most, which is more Aia and Willens love story.

Their love story is full of love and loss and sacrifice. They lost so much physically and emotionally.
Aia is just such a beautiful character.
This series is like a love story meets a fairytale meets Mary Poppins meets Willy Wonka. There are some absolutely wild characters in here and if you don’t laugh at some of the things they say, then I don’t know what is wrong with you. You mustn't have a soul.
Quel is probably one of my favorite naughty dragons and she is a very, very good dragon!
I am still unpacking the knitters character in what or who she actually is like that was just wild to me and I’m still processing it. I know there’s different tracks that you can read this series and I start off with Dryad 1 and 2.
The ending is haunting and beautiful. Initially, I was sad that both of our main characters are in so much pain physically, however, they sacrifice so much to protect the realm in those that they love.
I will leave you with this quote:
“ And so it was that the Second Prince Of All The Realm gave his heart to a Tree found in the dust of a cellar among dried beet roots. And he who became the greatest King who ever lived kissed the most beautiful, most fearsome being who ever dared to exist until he drifted to sleep, the crackling fire and a good number of well-read books all they owned. For there is no right side to madness in the end.“
I could not wait to pick this up, after reading the first part book. It did not disappoint. It managed to continue in a seamless fashion as the first book, creating a sense of continuity within the story. Seeing how the first book left us on a cliffhanger of sorts, there was little reason to wait and devour the book.
The story itself continues to encapsulate a sense of fantastical mystery, and establishes more elements that enhance the story. The storyline fosters more curiosity within the reader, urging them to explore more deeply into the world and the new characters we encounter.
There are new depths we get to discover in characters who have been with us from the beginning, but also with the new characters. The story creatively weaves the new elements into the novel in a naturally satisfying manner. It leaves you feeling like they’ve been there from the beginning.
Ultimately the continuation of The First Dryad will make you sit on the edge of your seat, as you navigate the world alongside familiar and new characters alike. Once again, I immensely appreciate being given the chance by Tess, to explore this fantastical world.
The second part to this duet was amazing. The storyline flows so well, and it didn’t feel like I was reading a second book.
We follow Aia and Willen, as their relationship develops and they fight for the lands. We see Aia becoming more independent, and at times furious as those trying to protect her, thinking they are doubting her. She follows an amazing character arc, and it truly felt as though as I was maturing with her.
There are a few new characters in the second part to the duet - my favourite being Quel, a wonderfully comedic character who shouldn’t belong in a world of violence, but when she is needed in times of war - she knows what to do.
The only thing I didn’t like about this book was the ending. I did feel like there were a few questions unanswered and I told Tess this, who said she would add in important information!
I am so so glad I got to read this, the next books are already on my TBR list.
Book: The First Dryad Book 2 Author: Teshelle Combs Highlights: fantasy world, forbidden love, family of enemies, world destruction, saviors, love above all else, loyalty, “games” type vibe Favorite Character: Lion - small but mighty Honorable Mentions: (original characters obviously) Quel Character that grew on me: Theor - for like a second and then he ruined it again Favorite Scene: gosh it’s hard to pick a favorite scene, one of the ones that caused the biggest physical reaction was the battle after the games. When they were building their lives again and Theor and his dreadful dragon killed Quel. Overall thoughts: amazing, heart breaking, satisfying but also aching for an easier life Star Rating: 4.8 of 5 Why: I wish their love story ended with health and babies Previous predictions: I knew Fara would be back - did not go how I thought it would… Predictions: I am starting to worry that my need for perfect love stories with a nice little bow isn’t going to be a common theme… haha

Not really sure how I feel about this one. Pretty sure this is the first Tess Combs book I didn't give a 5 star review on. It's a good book. I did enjoy it... mostly. It mostly left me a little confused and a little soul crushed. This book picks up right where book 1 left off. Tons of adventure, lots of growth on Aia's part. She really comes into her own as a Dryad. A lot of new characters with big plans and big personalities. I have to remind myself that there are still three more books in The First Collection that binds this world together and that not all could be revealed in this book. However, there were parts of the story that are withheld that I imagine will be explained in one of the other books. There is also a time jump and changing of POV a few times that made me stop to see if I accidentally skipped something. The ending broke me a little and almost felt out of place or rushed. Can't wait to see how this all comes together.
"Intelligence is not measured by what you know, but by how quickly you learn"
As stated in my review of book 1, this was a unique story. Upon finishing, I still have more questions rather than answers to things that were unclear in book 1; maybe I missed some information! From what I gathered, Aia "died" but defied her destiny to come back to Willen. I'm still not sure what/who Greta/Zan is and her role, other than to do as Fara commanded. I did; however, enjoy her growth and definitely liked her more than in book 1. Speaking of Fara, if you've read The First Dragon, well iykyk ;) and I enjoyed that connection! I still don't fully understand who she is or her purpose, and I am going to assume she is the "original" for that role she carries (don't want to spoil if you haven't read The First Dragon. Again, I didn't love it, I enjoyed it, and wished there was more clarity regarding the things that didn't make sense for me! But a fun and different fantasy take.

I received an ARC copy of this book to read and review.
My opinion here is very similar to that of the first one. Good story, great character development, unique world, etc.
I didn't like that there weren't many different words used. In particular, saying cross and scrubbed. "I'm very cross with you" is the only word used to describe any sort of feeling towards anyone else in any capacity (angry, irritated, frustrated, etc) they all used cross instead. Scrubbed at his/her tears is used the same way. Never wiped, dried, etc. It did get a little dull after a while.
Additionally, I don't think the characters felt the emotions they were supposed to. They talked about being sad or mad, but their actions didn't really reflect it. It was very much, "Wow, it sucks ____ died... Anyways, what should we do next?"
For transparency’s sake, I initially received The First Dryad 2 as an Advanced Reader’s Copy (ARC), but I have since purchased both the Kindle and a physical edition of this novel. My review is honest and unpaid/unsponsored.
Within seconds of finishing The First Dryad I was starting this one. I needed to know, immediately, what had happened and where Willen, Gretaline, and Aia were off to. We will meet a variety of new characters in this story, but the Knitter is one of the most intriguing. The Knitter knows all, the Knitter puts everything in to motion, Knitter is Fate....and the Knitter is Willen's mother! Greta also knows the Knitter?!
Then later on Greta, Hinna, and Aia act almost as a modern representation of the three Fates of Greek mythology - Hinna as a baddy maiden repping disability awareness, a youthful appearing who-knows-how-old crone in Greta, and of course Aia is the mother as a Dryad. I sincerely hope to get more of this story!
While I loved Book 1 a little more, this was still a fantastic read. Truly, I loved this little world that TC has created! Aia and Willen just might be a Top 10 couple for me overall. There was real depth and major growth to every character. The banter didn’t feel forced. TC managed to make it feel a little wonderland-esqe while still maintaining the original wonder of the Realm. Absolutely loved it!! I feel like I could add this series to a vibes list with Stephanie Garber’s OUABH and Caraval and I hope other readers would agree with me.
My only complaint is the ending does leave you with unanswered questions - seriously, TC pulled a Stephanie Garber and made the ending fit well to the characters that left you both fulfilled and yet wanting more.
Full transparency: I read this book as an ARC reader.
This author knows what she’s doing with my emotions. I loved the first book, but I devoured this one in one sitting. It was even better than the first. Aia’s character growth is phenomenal. Im not sure where Teshelle Combs gets her imagination, but she’s a genius.
Please know I’m not just saying that. I’ve left reviews for ARC reads before that weren’t 5 star. This is serious stuff to me, and I don’t lie just to help an author out. If it had wasted my time I wouldn’t be bothering with this review. If you’re on the fence, read the series. Just do it.
Where our Author gets her inspiration is beyond me. The book is captivating and is a world just to dive into without any regret! The MFC development from book one to two was so good! To go from innocent to strong willed was by far something I think everyone can find themselves in the character. Asia’s relationship with Willen, just makes my heart flutter! With similar feels of the first book, this was new and exciting and heartbreaking all at once and so different. The story got more and more captivating as the pages turned it became so hard to put down that I lost track of time whilst reading. The ending felt final but in away to still be added to in a third!
