Mike and Jen live in a quiet Louisiana community. That is, until zombies show up in their neighborhood. The couple is forced out of their home in order to find safety. As they do, they join other survivors. They soon find Sgt Brown and the rest of the survivors of the military's first response to the zombie outbreak. The group continues on, hoping to find safety while finding other survivors along the way. They lose people to the ever-growing hoard of zombies. How long can this ragtag band of soldiers and civilians survive as the world is taken over by a new APEX predator? This predator never sleeps, doesn’t feel pain, hunts in packs, and doesn’t ever quit. Who will survive in this new world, and who will succumb to the ever-growing hoard of undead?

The only thing I liked about this book was a couple of the gruesome zombie deaths.

The story itself was interesting, with a few military members trapped behind enemy lines who team up with civilians to escape the hordes of zombies. The military guys' point of view and decision-making kept this from being a ho-hum zombie book among the thousands being published these days. However, as a non-military person, it was difficult to "see" certain things, like military vehicles, because the book lacked a detailed description. We all know what a Humvee is, but "LMTV's, 2 ton trucks with flat noses" isn't enough.

I was disappointed in the abrupt ending. I got into the plot just enough to wonder what happens to the remaining survivors. There may be another book on the way, but I can't say I'm eager to read it.

What made it so painful to read was the endless grammatical and spelling errors. It doesn't appear that even a cursory proofread was given before it was published. I just couldn't help cringing every time I saw "your" instead of "you're," and "loose" instead of "lose." And don't forget about "sweat heart" instead of "sweetheart."

When you're trying to get into the plot, and have to go back and re-read any part--no matter how small--because the spelling and grammar mistakes throw off the pace, then the errors are interfering with the flow of the story. I imagine that isn't how the author intends it to be read.

I received "Apex" from the author for an honest review.

Apex by Glyn Gardner by Glyn Gardner was an enjoyable take on the zombie story. Intriguing characters and a promising storyline made it a worthwhile read and I would certainly read more by this author.

I liked how the characters, especially Mike and Jen, would go from trying to get a handle on things and focus on survival in one area to complete denial in another. It made the story much more realistic to me. To see main characters struggle with the reality of their situation is something you don't always come across in this genre. The book would have received a higher score with tighter editing (misspelled words, wrong words used, and some sentence structure problems made it a bit confusing in places). If these glitches were fixed, I would happily give Apex 4 stars.

I loved this book. I found it to be a great change to the "zombie" genre. I think the characters were great and the suspense was just enough. I think he is a great writer and I look forward to many more books by him! This book is one I have recommended to several friends...enjoy :)

I really enjoyed the story of this book and the characters. As I would expect in a zombie novel, it was packed with the right amount of introducing new characters and killing off others. There were definitely some interesting twists and it kept me engaged from start to finish. All that being said there is one recommendation that I do have, and that would be a glossary of the military terms. At points I didn't quite understand what they were talking about as I am not familiar with the military language and abbreviations. A glossary would have been extremely helpful. Otherwise, I can't wait to read more!
