From master of suspense Jo Gibson comes two heart-stopping novels of romantic obsession--where the love never dies. It kills. . .
The Crush
Michael Barton is smart, sweet, gorgeous--the total package. Which is why some of the girls have decided to have a little contest. Whoever hooks up with Michael first will be the winner. There's just one problem. One of the girls has been harboring a secret crush on Michael for years. She'll do anything to be his girlfriend. She'll play the game. She'll win his heart. She'll beat the competition. . .to death.
The Crush II
Michael Barton has experienced the dark side of love. He has survived the advances of a psychotic stalker. He has endured her deadly game of obsession. And now he is free from her web of lust and lies. But Michael has a surprise waiting for him. His secret admirer is still out there. Watching. Waiting. Plotting her next move. And if Michael thinks he can escape her this time, he's wrong. . .dead wrong.
*Spoiler Alert* This book was far from what I expected. When I picked it up from the bookstore, I was expecting a suspenseful, attention grabbing book that would keep me second guessing myself until the end. But within the first 50 pages, I already knew Judy was the killer. It was painfully obvious, and the entire book plot lacked any depth. The plot reminded me of something I might've written in 6th grade. Firstly, the characters had no personality. And every time someone was murdered, they were all sad for maybe one page, and then they were going after Michael again. If every one of his last girlfriends got murdered, you'd think he'd stop dating girls, and they would stop dating him. And the entire plot was complete crap. People were falling in love after one date. Michael wasn't even grieving after his girlfriends died. And the whole piece about Michael and Carla being in a movie was so completely irrelevant and pointless, I was highly disappointed with the entire plot theme. I would not recommend this book to anyone, unless you're looking for 400 pages of boredom and frustration
Obsessed had a lot of things going for it. The premise is awesome, and as a lover of thriller and suspense, really appealed to me. The idea of romantic obsession is always a winner, because it can happen to anyone, without them realizing it, and is pretty creepy to read about in novels. Gibson also has a nice description in her writing, and a voice that really keeps the pages turning. There are some interesting characters too - Michael and Carla show promise and I absolutely love Judy's character.
The biggest problem for me is that it simply wasn't believable. And I don't mean it wasn't believable in little details, or in a fantastical way. I'm normally able to accept things pretty well. But there comes a point as a reader where you want to groan come on and punch half of the characters in the face, and this point came pretty early.
It felt a little bit like Groundhog's Day, only the name of girl getting killed slightly changed. I thought the killings were great, I really did. But everything afterward was a bit of a 'WTF' reaction. First of all, people seem to move on really quickly from these deaths. I mean, I live near a relatively big city, and you hear some gruesome stories on the news, but I'd like to think that if some coworkers of mine were gruesomely murdered by a serial killer, I'd be affected. Even if I wasn't close to the person, I'd definitely be more scared and cautious.
And I get that Michael is sexy and has a great voice, but if his girlfriends are getting picked off like sitting ducks why would you completely forget all about that and still try to hook up with him, then go off by yourself when there is a killer on the loose and you now fit ALL of the descriptions? Yeah, Michael is great, but he ain't that great. Plus, he has a little too much of a Romeo complex. This boy falls in love faster than I finish books, and after the girl that he 'loved' croaks, it's barely five minutes before he's at it again with a new coworker. Half the time, I found myself rooting for the killer.
However, if that kind of thing doesn't bother you, than I would suggest giving Obsession a chance. Even if scenes felt a bit repetitive, many of them still had excellent uses of suspense. Although some of the dialogue seemed a bit forced, plenty of the characters were still enjoyable. Plus, I actually really liked the ending, so it might be worth the repetition to power through and finish - even if the novel isn't quite your cup of tea. But, Obsessed was an interesting read, regardless of it's believability, and I didn't really have any trouble finishing it. Am I going to buy multiple copies to hand out to my friends? Probably not. Would it make a pretty excellent Lifetime movie adaptation that I would watch entirely? Probably.
This one is hard to review because it technically is two books. I decided to give it three stars total for both books. The Crush was amazing and even if it was a little corny at some points it was written in 1994 so I will give it a break for that. It is an old young adult book and it shows sometimes. The sequel to the crush fell a little flat compared to the first one but it was still a fun and enjoyable read!
I was given a copy of this book through Net Galley in exchange for an honest review.
Michael is a singer who all the girls love, and the girls that work with him at Covers is no exception. In fact, they all want him so bad that they start a contest to see who can get him first: Whoever's able to date Michael for two weeks is the winner. At first it seems like harmless fun...until each person Michael goes out with is murdered.
*sigh* I was really hoping to love this book. It sounded good, but it just didn't deliver. It was extremely disappointing In this two part book, you go through the struggles everyone has with coping with the murders and trying to find out who the killer is.
In all honesty, there's barely any coping. Each time a new girl is murdered, everyone talks around the table and decides that the show at Covers must go on. EVERY TIME. I don't know about you, but if there were tons of people I know getting killed that worked where I worked, I'd want to close down until everything was worked out.
That was only the beginning of this train wreck of a book. The entire story was basically repetition. Girl gets killed, show goes on, another girl closes in on Michael, girl gets killed. Repeat. And repeat. And repeat.
The characters were extremely annoying as well. They made jokes that weren't funny and they weren't realistic. Michael was supposed to be this caring, young man who respected everyone, yet he was flying through these women like his life depended on it.
This is probably the worst book I've ever read, even more than Tiger's Curse, which I could not stand. Don't waste your time on this story.
Jo Gibson: What's a good way to denote fear? Agent: Um...shivering? J: Perfect! A: There's also- J: I don't need another this is literary gold. A: But you might want to change up- J: LITERARY GOLD.
I wanted to get everyone in the book sweaters so they'd stop shivering in every chapter.
I usually love stories like these. Girl meets boy, girl falls in love, girl becomes obsessed, girl start feeling murdery. All very relatable, of course. But this was terribly written and terribly edited. I don't know if the editor was rushed or what but the many small grammar issues and typos were distracting. Even the main character's last name is incorrect on the back cover.
The plot itself is repetitive and unoriginal. Meet Michael - the perfect guy whom every single girl ever in the universe wants. One girl in particular sets her eye on him, starts to seduce him, he is completely unable to resist, and starts dating her. She soon gets killed by a "mystery" killer. This doesn't faze Michael much as before his former girlfriend's body gets cold a new girl sets her eye on Michael. She starts to seduce him, he is unable to resist, and the whole process starts all over again. Rinse. Lather. Repeat. Luckily, you don't really have to keep track of the many different girls because 90% of them are exactly the same - super hot and super bitchy. Finally, the dialogue is unrealistic and down right stupid.
I randomly found this book on Libby and after I read the synopsis I was in. However, the synopsis is the best written part of this whole book. I found this book to be tortuous, unbelievable and truly dull. I suffered to finish this book hoping that would be this big payoff at the end. There was none. It was 500 pages of poorly written characters, plot and setting. I wanted to put an arrow through my own heart.
Cross-posted from my blog where there's more information on where I got my copy and links and everything.
Originally the two books that make up this bind-up were published in 1994 by Zebra, specifically from their Scream Line. You may or may not know this, so let’s talk a bit about Zebra, because this is very interesting. Zebra, which is also a division of Kensington, mostly started as a romance publisher. In the 80s and 90s, however, they were quite successful publishing westerns and horror novels. They apparently (I can’t find too much information on it) had a line called “Scream”, which seems to have been somewhat similar to Point Horror line, but clearly not as popular.
The other interesting fact about this book? Jo Gibson is also known as Joanne Fluke, who writes the Hannah Swensen series. I find that so interesting. There’s also an excerpt for her… I think only non-cozy adult book, The Other Child, at the back of this book. Which is just such random advertising!
This is kind of trash, but it’s trash in a very specific way. Honestly, I did not realize that was such an old book when I started reading it, since I literally grabbed it because of the cover. It wasn’t until I got to a part about how cellphones were so expensive and unusual that I was like “what the hey?” and actually checked the publication date.
This is 90s teen pulp horror. You don’t go into this expecting a good book. The characters are barely characters, there’s a ton of 90s isms, the plot is ridiculously predictable, and it’s not remotely scary as an adult. You gotta think about being twelve and reading this with barbecue chips on a Friday night when you’re still young enough that staying up late on a Friday is a treat.
This was great! I’m actually gonna keep this and I would love to get my hands on the other bind-ups of her books. I’m super charmed by this.
I liked the concept of this book so I read it in spite of the bad reviews. However, I feel like while the concept is fun, it could've been carried out better. The book is actually two stories in one, with the second being a continuation of the first. In the first story, it is obvious that but I don't think the authour really intended it to be a big mystery and it's still interesting nevertheless. However, in general I found the book quite repetitive and also a little too unrealistic. I could go on and on, but ultimately I did enjoy reading the book. However, I think it could've been ~a lot~ better and it was disappointing as I think it had so much potential.
Nothing could be said for how much I disliked this reading this book. Nice job for writing and publishing a book but, there were a few things that bothered me. First, the characters were too bland. No development and little depth. It was like here is a group of girls then they're dead. Oh and one is a maniac who killed them all. Then there was Michael. The perfect boy who, for some unknown reason, kept dating girls even though they were being killed. I've never seen someone move on so quickly. This was like one day a death and the next is a new girlfriend. Second, the plot was too predictable. By like the fifth chapter, I knew who the killer was. It was just too obvious. Third, the paragraphs were so close together. I had to admit that I skipped over so much because it felt like too much in one place. Overall, don't waste your time with this book. Save your time and money.
Quite possibly the worst book I’ve ever read. She even got her characters names wrong. The book at the beginning says one name and then at the end another and then the summary another. The grammatical errors was enough for me to not take this author seriously
“Obsessed” is a YA thriller divided into two parts: The Crush I and The Crush II, and it had me hooked up right from the very first pages.
It stars a group of teenagers who work at Covers, a teenage nightclub. Some sing, other perform, other do magic tricks, while the others cook, bartend or keep themselves busy with lighting the show. Michael Warden is one of the singers. He is the typical smart, sweet, gorgeous UCLA freshman all girls want. And the girls at Covers are no different: some of them even decide to have a contest between them, and whoever gets to date Michael for two weeks is the winner. There is only one problem. One after the other, all girls dating Michael end up mysteriously murdered.
I really liked both parts of “Obsessed” and even though I had guessed what the clue was in the second part, I could not leave the book aside. I had to read further, to make sure I was right and to know how it all would end.
Indeed, the plot is compelling and forces us to keep on reading to know what is happening to all these girls. When the first part ends, we think it is all solved and settled, but just when we start to breathe and feel comfortable again, the author strikes back and it starts all over again.
This is a reading I truly enjoyed, and I will probably read Jo Gibson’s next book, “Twisted”, to see what she has in store for us.
The author’s writing is quite simple and easy to understand, which makes “Obsessed” a good choice for someone who would like to start reading in English. The vocabulary used is easily understandable, even to a non-native speaker.
I gave the book 4 out of 5 stars on Goodreads since I had difficulties to link with Michael’s character. He keeps jumping from one girl to the next without really grieving the previous one, and I found this a bit too unrealistic. I cannot help but think that any boy noticing every girl he’s been dating gets killed would probably stop dating any new girl until the killer is caught. This disturbed me quite much, so this is why I did not give 5 stars to this book.

My copy was provided by Netgalley. Micheal works at a teen nightclub called Covers along with female coworkers who all want to date him. These girls find Michael irresistible and no matter their relationship status, they will stop at nothing to get him. They even created a contest to see who will snag him first. But one person goes too far. Any girl Michael shows the slightest it of interest to dies. The girls are all murdered and Michael has to figure out who it is before he gets blamed for the murders. I didn't really like this book. It was very predictable. I knew what was going to happen no matter the kinds of twists the author tried to use. There were no suspenseful moments and I got bored with the book quite easily. At first, this book sounded really interesting. I love the type of books where there's someone so obsessed with someone else they start killing. I don't know why, but they always pique my interest. But this book didn't. The big problem with this book is how unrealistic everyone is. I mean, Michael is considered a god to all these girls. It's as if he doesn't have any problems and that he's perfect. He was not a good male interest and I didn't like him at all. What I really didn't like was how all these girls still want to date Michael even though anyone who dated him was killed. At first, it may have seemed like a coincidence, but after about three murders, you would think the girls would gets clue, but none of them did. They just kept dating him and getting killed in the process. Also, no one grieved. These girls died and it was like no one seed. There weren't any funerals mentioned or crying families. No one fell apart and it was all very boring. It was like someone died, people felt sad for a minute, and the they continued with their lives. Real life is not at all like that! It was annoying to keep reading about these robots who didn't care their friends were being murdered. The only one who seemed to care was the boss. He tried to help the girls and tried to shut down the club, but these idiot girls demanded it to stay open, quickening their deaths. The death scenes seemed like they repeated every time and there were a ton of cliches. I didn't enjoy this book nearly as much as I would have thought.
Obsessed is the kind of book that is so original only with its blurb that catch you. AND if in more you reads the opinions on this book which are just excellent, you can only want to read it. For my part, I fell a little randomly above it on Netgalley, the summary plaised me, being a little in my "psychopath" time, and I decided to try my chance. Result, I finished the book with the brain upside down and with only one desire: to read again a book of this auteure!
Although the book is from the point of view of the various girls surrounding Michael, it's really him the protagonist of this book. He is a rather naive young man, who lets himself handle by all the girls who hit on him. I really some troubles with his personality, the way he fall in love with all the girls. I start having enough to see him go with all these famous young ladies in distress.
It's much more interesting to discover these crafty one. Each one of them are different, with a character, a passion which is their. Even the reason for which they decide to go out with Michael differs. We follows essentially the point of view of Judy then of Carla. These two characters clearly step apart thanks of their personalities and their will to protect Michael, not wanting to take part in the competition.
But let's be realistic, the true strong point of those two novels (because there are two stories in the same book) are clearly the intrigue! A serial killer, the Cupid Killer, kill every Michael's girlfriends. We discovers the deaths from the points of view of the victims, at the same time as their real feelings for Michael. On several occasions we think of knowing who is the true killer, because the killer is a character working in Covers, common point between everyone.
Between murder, love and treason, the bounces don't miss and hold us in breath to the last page. The entertainment world is well showed and not only the scene's numbers, there are also these who trades in the shades, which are important. Obsessed is an excellent thriller with certain YA notes which disturbs us a little. It could have been a crush without certain stereotypes and the distressing character of its male character. The fact remained that I recommend it warmly to you, you would have for your money!
Netgalley gave me this book in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!
Obsessed by Jo Gibson
Judy is best friend with a boy named Michael who she loves and would like to date, but sadly he only views her as a friend no matter what she does. Despite that she still stays close with him and hopes that one day he will change her mind. However, things change when girls who work at the club they work at who have dated Michael start getting murdered. Many people believe that Michael is doing it, but Judy knows that he isn't and is determined to prove it.
This novel was something. At some points, I was interested in it and I would wonder what was going to happen. This was true especially toward the beginning of it. The concept is also pretty good.
However, the characters weren't all that smart. Even though many girls who have dated Michael have been murdered, girls keep dating him. That doesn't make sense. I wouldn't want to date someone if all his past girlfriends were murdered. Also Michael is pretty much a Gary Stu. He has no flaws and everyone thinks he is hot and wants to date him and even marry him even though he is still a teenager.
The murders are all pretty much the same, too. Most the women that are killed also act the same and seem to have one of two personalities. It's really annoying. I would have liked if they were more developed.
Overall I am going to give this book two of out five.
I received a copy of this book through Net Galley in exchange for an honest review.
This book was a complete disappointment ! The summary looked promising but it turns out to be the worst book I ever read.
Michael is a singer at the club Covers. All the girls who worked there are obsessed with him and want to date him. They even start a contest to see who can get him first. The person who is able to date Michael for two weeks is the winner. But then each girl who gets close to him is murdered.
First of all I did not enjoy any of the characters. I mean Michael is supposed to be the perfect guy but he does not seemed very upset when every girl he dates dies. He just continues dating another girl like everything is ok. The girls are so annoying and not realistic at all. It is impossible to get attached to one of them. Clara was the least annoying but in the end she became as obsessed for Michael as the other girls.
The story is too repetitive : Michael dates a girl, she gets killed, the employees meet to discuss the murder, Michael dates another girl, she gets killed ... There was no surprises at all and it is supposed to be a thriller !! Besides the detective asking teenagers for their theory about the murder is not believable at all.
To conclude I really did not like this book and I had a hard time finishing it. It was boring and repetitive and the characters were awful. That is why I would not recommend this book.
Obsessed started off with so much promise. Judy Lampert and her neighbor, Michael, who just happened to also be her best friend both worked at Covers, a popular teen hotspot. Michael was the heartthrob singer at Covers and it appeared as though every teenaged girl who was within 50 feet wanted him. The girls all had a contest to see who would be exclusive with Michael first and that’s when the murders started happening. One-by-one each of the participants in the contest wound up dead or fought desperately not to get killed and that is where so many things begin to fall apart.
Also annoying was the book was very outdated but since there was no indication it was set in the 90s I had no clue about that. I believe the author should have offered some sort of timeline, sub-heading or something that would clue us in.
Obsessed fell flat with me because I had that, “Eh, been there and done that way too many times,” attitude. I think if it was updated it would have been a better read for me. But because it is very similar to so many books already published and movies already I still do not think Obsessed by Jo Gibson would have been a winner with me. However, it would have made a great read in the 90s.
I started this book without any idea what it was about. I didn't even read the blurb. Of course, the title gave me an idea, and it was mainly the only reason why I chose to start it. The first chapter got me immediately. Too bad that's just about what this book had going for it.
I couldn't see the fascination with Michael, and why practically every girl at Covers wanted him. Okay he's talented, good looking, sweet- perfect male specimen. But the fact that he had a new girl just about as soon as the last one dies (and trust me, that's pretty much all that they do) infuriated me. He didn't seem like a player, but he was just so easily won over. All except the one girl who mattered most, the psycho. I'm fairly sure the whole book was a crazy cycle of date Michael and get killed. And guess who gets him in the end? That's right, the girl who wasn't interested in playing the game in the first place.
I couldn't wait to turn the pages only until the reveal of the killer. And by then it was already pretty obvious who the whodunit was. After that, everything just went doooooown. Even the part 2 didn't have any redeeming value.
I would have given this book one star, but hey, serial killer and dead flirtatious women. So that was a plus, I guess.
Another book by Jo Gibson, I devoured the others. This one, took awhile since I had it from the library, someone else requested, I returned, they lost the book! gasp lol, luckily my library replaced it and I was able to finish the last story. Quick reads, reminds me of the old point horror series. I flew through these stories, a perfect read for a hurricaine day off.
I tried to pick this book up a couple of times, and I never really got past the 14% mark.
The premise behind this book was pretty good, it sounded interesting and it could have been done really well. Unfortunately, I had a lot of problems with this read and put it down. My major issues right from the start were; the competition element of the book - it goes straight into this psychopathic storyline without much of a decent reasoning or build-up; it was pretty obvious from the first few chapters who the "bad guy" was going to be; the character reactions to the girls' deaths were just so far fetched, there was basically no mourning period or depth to the character emotions. The book felt like it was going to be very repetitive, which was confirmed when I checked out some other reviews on Goodreads. As for the love interest... he seemed very vapid, he moved on at a ridiculous speed. I just couldn't get into this read and have lots of other books piling up that I wanted to get to. Great idea for a novel, just not well executed.
(I received a copy from Netgalley, In exchange for an honest review.)
Actual rating - 2.5
Obsessed was an okay read, but i lost interest early on.
The characters were annoying, and quite stupid. The only ones i liked were Carla and Michael, but even they had their annoying moments.
I was bored through the majority of this. Loads of people were being killed, but i was still bored. That might have had something to with how predictable it was, though. It was really obvious who the killer was after a few chapters!
I found book one to be a bit better than book two... but that was probably just because by that point, i'd read more, So i was more bored.
Overall, Okay, but would have been better if it was less predictable.
A bit predictable, but it still reminded me of books I grew up reading. Similar to that of Christopher pike's The Weekend and RL Stine's Call waiting. I knew who was the killer the entire time reading, but I was really happy who Michael ended up with in the end. She was the one girl who didn't see him as a prize to be won and she really cared for him.
This book was possibly the most bland, most predictable "thriller" I have ever read in my life, with multiple plot holes (including the protagonist's last name, which changes between the text and the back cover). Waste of time, didn't even finish it.
The book I read is by Jo Gibson called "obsessed". I had previously read a book of hers called "afraid"I really enjoyed that book. I have enjoyed reading this one to. This book has three different stories so I will tell you about one. All of these girls are trying to see who can date this guys Michael first and one of the girls would do anything to date him. "She'll do anything to be his girlfriend"(Gibson). But when girls start dying no one knows who doing it and why it is happening. I enjoyed this book because it was a book that you just wanted to keep reading to see what happens. "She'll beat the competition...to death"(Gibson). Its thing like that that keep me on the edge of my seat.
