Despite what you’ve been told, the Apocalypse doesn’t begin with fire raining down from the heavens, nor does it begin with the human race falling down on their faces in supplication before a triumphant god. No, the sounds of the Apocalypse are much more terrifying than that, and I should know … I’ve heard them, and hearing the world tumble into chaos around me is not something I’ll ever forget. My name is Melody Carter. A Boeing 767 fell from the sky and wiped out most of my neighborhood. But, that's the least of my worries. My list of "Things I'm Most Worried About" shifted dramatically when my dad told me that charred corpses tried to make a meal out of their rescuers ... I'm thinking yours would too. This is the beginning of my story. It's not for the faint of heart.
*** This is PART ONE in the ongoing zombie apocalypse novella series, State of Decay. A new story will be released every 3-4 weeks, until Melody's story has been told. This novella is approximately 20,000 words. (About 80+/- pages long) *** ****** Warning: This book is for mature/NA/Adult Readers. This novella contains: tons of violence, lots of action, gobs of gore, and oodles of bad language. Enter at your own risk. ******
What can I say about Peggy's new creation. Well first if you love the Walking Dead then you will love the State of Decay. I have an issue with zombies in general. The scary the crap out of me. The whole time I was reading I was literally on the edge of my seat screaming to the character to "RUN", "DUCK", or "HIDE." When everything was said and done I was left with my heart pounding thinking OMG I hope that never happens lol. There is so much detail in the story it's almost as if you are there with the character. Hiding out in places and avoiding detection. Every emotion the character goes through you feel too. I can't wait for the next installment. SO HURRY PEGGY!!!
State of Decay is a Zombie serial that I had been hearing tons of great things about so naturally I wanted to read it for myself. For whatever reason after buying I didn't get around to it right away. Boy was I missing out by doing so.
While this story doesn't have a ton of characters the ones were introduced to are fabulous. I loved the character Melody she was strong, brave and had a good head on her shoulders. Being the daughter of an Army Major definitely gives her an advantage when it comes to the Zombie Apocalypse and it shows. However, deep down she is still a Teenage girl lost in a world filled with shambling corpses and so she has this vulnerability as well. I also loved her Father and really wish I could've gotten to know him more.
Another thing I really enjoyed about State of Decay was the gore. This book doesn't try and pretty up the deaths of the living. I've read several recent Zombie stories where they stop short of describing anything to keep the book firmly in PG-13 territory and for me that is extremely frustrating. It was really nice to see someone write who isn't afraid to describe how the putrefying bodies smell or what it feels like to curb stomp a Zombies head in. All the little details you'd expect were included and made the story and the world it is set in that much creepier.
The only downside to the story that I found was the sudden time jump midway through the story. Going from day one to 72 hours later is one thing but 72 hours to 2 years is another. I just wish we had seen a few glimpses into those 2 years of lost time. How did Melody survive? Did the woods she was inhabiting ever have Zombies shambling through them or was it relatively safe? Did she ever see survivors on her supply runs? I'm hoping that in the next book we get to learn a bit more about her survival during that time. Is it enough to downgrade the story? No, but I still would've liked to have viewed her struggles alone in the woods so long.
Final Thoughts State of Decay combines pulse pounding suspense, Zombies and realism to create a perfect little story that reads like a full length novel. I highly recommend picking this one up and giving it a go. I can't wait to download the next episode and see what happens with the characters in the story. I have a feeling that things are about to get a whole lot worse before they get better. With that being said, I will be rating State of Decay by Peggy Martinez ★★★★★.
I seriously love zombie books like this and at the same time I'm left screaming. So many authors in this genre have written good episodic stories I wished were published in Kindle Serials because I know for the most part I'll get my next fix. I am excited to see part two is coming soon.

But this review is about what I liked an or did not about the book or in this case the shot novella. Zombie story wise a good start. There's tons of good potential and the writing is solid. The character development was just enough to hook me but I'm hoping I feel closer in part two.
What I got was a taste of the same detachment the protagonist must have felt as her world ended. A few things I didn't like was her choice of actions when she goes back in town. But she was barely out of school. I just don't completely buy her decision considering how she was raised n her rationality to that point. Here were a few details and consequences to injuries I couldn't' completely by.
Over all its a 7.75 read..us I know but it's not a solid B more like a B-' and I did really like it. It frustrated me just like serial style stories are supposed to. I want to keep reading!!! ie story wise a good start. There's tons of good potential and the writing is solid. From the looks of the other reviews, I am the only one not given a copy for an honest review. Even though I purchased my copy I will still give an honest review. Haha. I read a lot of Zbooks. This one was good, short but then, it is a novella. All of the normal elements are there. It is what is not there that takes away a star. We go from 72 hours after the apocalypse to 2 years later. Sometimes this works, this time it fell short. I think the reason it fell short is that the heroine is a young woman who, at the 72 hour mark had grabbed supplies and went to her hideout in the woods. Two years later she is still alive and has been living in the woods by herself, in a tent. There was nothing really there on how she managed to live in a tent in the woods for those years, except a blurb about a couple times she left. The story line is interesting. The heroine is likable. We just are left wondering what she did and how she survived for two years. Were there no zombies ever in the woods? Are the woods a safe zone? What did she do to keep from going crazy? How did she deal with her dad's death and her killing a zombified child? How did she survive, mentally as well as physically? We don't know. What was written though was good reading. I paid $0.99 for about 50 pages. Not bad. But this is a novella series meaning we will keep paying for installments. I think I would like to know approximately how many novellas are in the series before really investing myself. At 99 cents for each installment, 8 would be about $8. Not too bad but I would expect more to the story to justify the pricing. I think the author does well with descriptive writing. She did bring the horror to you. The cliff hangar was a good one, though I hope book 2 will not lose sight of being a Zbook and turn into romance fiction. Some romance would be fun but let's not lose sight that it is a Zbook.
If your into zombies, strong female leads & a great plot that pulls you into the story, then State of Decay Part 1 by Peggy Martinez is exactly what you been looking for. This book does contain strong language, violence & is intended for mature readers. I have been a huge fan of Peggy Martinez for some time now, so when I heard she was going to start writing about zombies I was really excited. I was not disappointed, State of Decay part 1 was everything I expected, an action packed story that doesn’t slow down, with a main character that kicks butt & makes you laugh, and a cliff hanger that leaves you wanting more. Melody is such a great character, she’s smart, sassy & who don’t love a chick that can take out a zombie with her bare hands & Jude I think is going to be a fun edition to the story (I hope she don’t turn him into a zombie). Peggy Martinez is a master at pulling you into her stories, with her writing style being so descriptive & her characters being so believable. The only thing I didn’t like was the length of the book. I know it’s a novella, but even 10 more pages would have made a huge difference. However I wouldn’t let the length of the book deter from purchasing State of Decay Part 1, because it really is well worth the 99 pennies you’ll spend on it. I already have part 2 & I am itching to get at so Happy Reading
I love zombie stories and it’s hard to find one where you can resonate with the main character and hope nothing bad happens to her. And let’s not forget the nice zombie slashing we get to see, which is a definite requirement in any zombie read.
It follows Melody Carter as the zombie apocalypse unfolds after a plane crashes, literally, in her backyard. It takes you on a very real survival ride to safety as the world literally turns into one chaotic and bloody mess Melody and her father stuff every weapon and food item they can carry into their bags and hop into their vehicle, heading towards a military base. But you see, they never make it there. A tragic accident has Melody scrambling to get out of the city into the safe embrace of the surrounding woods.
As time goes on, she re-emerges to discover something odd about the military base her father was headed towards. Once she enters, will she find more death and destruction? Or does she find hope for the first time in years?
Loved this short novella and it’s an excellent introduction to a series that’s sure to keep you reading, gripping your reader in hopes that you don’t find yourself in a similar situation. And if you do, this one has some excellent tips. I look forward to the future installments.
So it's October, and half of me is only waiting for The Walking Dead to start, you know? So I've started on a little zombie reading kick. This book fit the bill perfectly. It was short - so I got what I needed and quickly. It has a strong female protagonist, and quite a little badass she is. Likeable, strong, and heroic. I'm on to book two just so I can see what happens next. And the author had better be nearly finished with book 3...because I'm impatient! :)
I am a huge fan of zombie fiction, and State of Decay nails it!
I have had the State of Decay novellas on my "to-read" list for quite some time now, and I'm glad I finally pushed them to the top of the list.
This novella jumps right into the action, and doesn't give you a breather until you see the words, "The End (of the beginning)." Though it has quite a few spelling and grammatical errors that can be easily corrected with a simple proofread, they don't overly distract from the plot.
I love that the main character is sassy and a kick-ass girl, thanks to the training she got from her military dad. It makes her comfort with a handgun strapped to her leg and an M4 slung across her back more believable. She is strong, yet vulnerable in some ways, and so very likeable. It's impossible not to cheer for her to survive, because she "... wasn't going down without a fight."
Peggy Martinez's writing is perfect for this length of book. She gets to the point, and leaves out all the unnecessary words. Yet her descriptions of the scent of rot and decay like "an oversaturated blanket of smog" are most interesting.
I find it fascinating when an author describes a scene with so much detail that I find myself in the midst of the sights, sounds, and even scent of the setting. I love being transported to their imaginary world. Peggy Martinez did that for me, and I am looking forward to reading all of the novellas in the State of Decay series in the next few days!
I have been on a zombie book binge. I can't get enough. I have read a few that were so so and a couple that were amazing and this one was amazing!
I admit I love it when the heroine can kick ass. When she doesn't rely on a man to save her and can out think, and outwit everyone else. That said, I LOVE Melody!! She is definitely an ass kicker and she's not the type of girl to trip over a tree root and get eaten. She's the blow up buildings, live in the woods alone, take down a zombie with her bare hands, survivalist, bad ass chick that I want my daughters to be.
Melody was taught to survive from her military father and she's no slouch when it comes to thinking on her feet. She's not afraid to get her hands dirty and stab a walking corpse right through the eye with her 12 inch double edge recon blade. I cheered her on from the beginning. She had a gut instinct that something bad was going down, and she prepared to run. When her father was bitten she didn't hesitate to do what she had to do. Some might say she's too hardened, but for the world she lives in, she's got exactly what it takes to survive.
I devoured this novella and am eagerly waiting for the next part of Melody's story. 5 stars!! Great job Peggy!
I read this novella straight through in one sitting and OMG it was so good. I love zombies and female characters with a witty edge. This book has it all.
Melody has no idea her world is about to change forever when a plane crashes in her neighborhood. Her father rushes back in and tells her to pack a bag with necessities and his gun. Instead of going into a corner and crying, she does as she is told and they take off. Zombies are everywhere and now she must learn to survive in this world turned upside down.
Melody is the daughter of a military man, who has taught her how to focus on what needs to de done in frightening situations. She doesn't sit in a corner and cry when facing a zombie, no she kicks a$$. I love the detailed descriptions of the ooy gooy zombies and the bits of humor thrown in. A pefect blend of action, suspense, homor and zombies. I cannot wait for the second installment. Peggy Martinez has shown once again that she is a brilliant writer and I absolutely love her work.
I was given a copy of this novella in exchange for an honest review. I'm a huge zombie fan, so I jumped at the opportunity to read something new. What initially drew me in was that Peggy claimed no romance, that's a great quality when it comes to zombies. I was very driven at the beginning of the novella, it was fast paced and intriguing. I loved that Melody came from a military background, that she was taught survival skills and wasn't thrown into the apocalypse totally helpless. Nothing irritates me more than when a character gets thrown into this kind of situation with no background and is all of a sudden a bad@ss with skills. Thankfully, not here. Although I found at about halfway through the book I started to lose interest and things were going downhill quickly for me; there was a sudden increase in typos as well. But Peggy made a great recovery, and grabbed my attention back. This was a good quick read, and I will definitely be interested in seeing where this novella goes next.
I am not a zombie reader. Never read a zombie book in my life. I was intrigued by this book because I've read Peggy's Sage Hannigan series and loved it.
Since I'm a "Zombie virgin", I thought that this shorter book would be a great start. And I am SOOOOOO glad that I picked it.
Peggy, as usual, writes with such vivid imagery. I do have to say it was refreshing to see this different side of her writing.
I'm anxious to read about where part two takes Melody (our main heroine) and her new found crew. I want to know why things are the way that they are....why has the "World gone to shit"?? Is it isolated to this small town in North Carolina? Is it just the U.S.? Has the world gone to zombie hell?
I can't wait to get those answers. Great reading - especially this time of year. Two thumbs way up!!!
I was given a copy of this novella in exchange for an honest review, and honest I'll be. I absolutely loved it!!! I'm a big fan of zombie stories/shows/movies to begin with, so I was already looking forward to reading this. I've never been much for a novella reader, but this one was so freaking good that I'm now a believer. Melody was such a great character...strong, fiesty, smart, and tough. I felt like I was with her during her adventure since the writing was so descriptive and believable (well, believable for zombies lol). I'm really looking forward to reading more about Melody, and I felt a bit teased that Jude was introduced and I have to wait for the next novella to come out. Great, great story!!!
I never thought I would really be one to read about Zombies - but this book takes us into a young woman's life from the VERY beginning of her experience with the creatures. Peggy is an excellent author in the way she puts us in the head of Melody. The story does not drag ANYWHERE in the book. As Melody makes her way and sets up a place to survive - she comes upon a supposed abandoned Military base. You just have to read the story to see how she gets to this point - I have always loved tough ass woman and her experiences are definitely making her that!! The story left me wanting more - I have read other books by Peggy and each one leaves me wanting more!!!
When a plane crashes into a neighborhood, no one expected the horrors to come. The dead are rising up and attacking the living. A teenage girl who was taught survival skills by her ex-military father finds herself on her own. She uses the skills her father taught her to live off the land for two years. But now she wants to find answers to what happened.
I liked this story. It is introducing a new series and does a good job of setting it up. The problem is that it sounds like so many other zombie series already on the shelves. Hopefully as the series continues, it will distinguish itself from the rest of the undead horde. It isn't bad, just familiar.
I was given the honor to beta read this book and leave an honest review. This is a novella series about the zombie apocalypse and a young woman's will to survive. Melody and her father survived the plane crash that wiped out most of their neighborhood, the dead were coming back and attacking those who were trying to help them and Melody's father new it was time to leave so they took only what they needed, food, weapons, etc and thus the journey begins for Melody. A must read and an awesome job by Author Peggy Martinez!
State of Decay is the first instalment of a zombie novella series featuring Melody, the late teen daughter of a military soldier. A cascade of horrifying events turns Mel's world into a zombie ridden landscape in the blink of an eye. Mel gathers up supplies and lives in the wilderness for two years before she decides to snoop around the military base. Here she encounters a group of people living together trying to wrestle the apocalypse.
This series has some serious potential. Mel is sort of quirky and kick-ass, but I'm hoping we see Mel go through some changes. We shall see....
In a way I’m glad this was a novella. There were some errors that jumped out at me and slowed my pace and I wasn’t really emotionally attached to the characters. The ending was actually the best part for me and the only part that got any reaction out of me. It’s also the ending may just have convinced me to continue reading this series.
I bought this book not knowing what I'd discover. To my amazement it was fantastic. The author draws you in with imagery of a world bent on destruction in the midst of a zombie apocalypse. I suggest this book to anyone who is infatuated with the zombie survival genre. My only regret is that there isn't an option to give move stars on this review.
Okay I dont really love Zombies, I love seeing how people survive against all odds. This beginning was amazing. I was hooked from page the first chapter. Peggy Martinez described this world so well, and I felt the characters emotions. I want more and will be buying the next installment! There were a few spelling, grammar errors but not enough to pull my attention away to much.
I was giving this book for a honest review ......and I loved it zombies are my favorite and this short story was great it hooks you in from the begging to the end the main charecter melody is a strong willed girl who you'll fall in love with can't wait till number 2 :)
TOTALLY loved EVERYTHING about this story!!! It really reminded me of the Walking Dead show, which I loved! Melody is a kick ass character and had me mesmerized from the first page! Can't wait to read the rest! You can never go wrong with zombies!!
This was my first zombie read. I guess I now know that I am not 100% into that type of book. This book was a pretty easy to read except for the many errors in spelling and grammar. This was a very short book so it allowed me to get a small glimpse of what s zombie story is like.
I love Zombie apocalypse books. I am not a fan of the whole L.M.O.E. hero. I found the story to follow a predictable pattern that is the relationship, suicidal mission and etc. I will try part 2 and three and rate as well as the story unfolds.
