4.5 stars!!!

ARC kindly provided by Book Enthusiast Promotions via Netgalley in exchange of an honest review.

This is the story of Alexia. Yes, only Alexia! There is also a guy, Jaxson but the whole story is about Alexia. Alexia that cannot forget a number once she sees it and that is in trouble although she did nothing wrong! Oh, Alexia had also a relationship with her super sexy boss!

I have to say that I enjoyed this story really much! The plot is kind of expected with a couple of really good twists but the writing is so alive and funny that I didn't mind at all! Ms. Alexander has made an excellent job with the writing of this book as I caught myself laughing out loud and gasp a couple other times! My favorite part was the title of each chapter! It was brilliant! The books is written from Alexia's POV with the exception of two chapters that were written from Jaxson's POV (although I didn't find them necessary to be honest). I have to admit that there were a couple of points in the book that I felt that I was reading unnecessary information but in the end the story won me!

Alexia is fantastic! She made me laugh and cry! She is quite honest heroine! She has a potty mouth and she doesn't feel guilty about it! She has also two besties that they are fantastic characters! I really loved her!

Jaxson is not my piece of cake. He is rich and he has everything that a woman would love about a rich guy but he didn't feel interesting to me. So, he felt kind of empty to me.

The end of the book left me voiceless and speechless and breathless! I have to admit that just for the last three four chapters the book took 4.5 stars! The surprises came then and they were good! Of course the book finished with a cliffhanger that left me wondering what will happen next! I cannot wait to read the next one!

I definitely recommend this book to everyone who would like to read a hot, funny, with an awful cliffhanger love story!

Lacking In Layers

After reading various reviews of Layers I was looking forward to a fun, sexy, and engaging read. I'm sorry to say I was disappointed. I wanted to love this book! Yes, there is sexy fun. Yes, there is funny banter. Unfortunately, that just wasn't enough. For me, the mark of a truly good story is the writer's ability to make me care about the characters. To get emotionally involved in their lives enough to feel as if I'm experiencing the journey along with them. To ride the rollercoaster of ups and downs that races the story along, barely having time to catch a breath.

Layers had that potential but missed the mark. When Alexia comes home from vacation to find she has been accused of embezzling millions of dollars from the Ryan Corp. she acts as if it is nothing more than being accused of stealing someone's yogurt from the staff room fridge. Her high-end loft is trashed, every single thing destroyed, and she is barely rattled. As a reader, I should have felt...something. Alexia's lack of emotion in regard to all the happenings going on left me cold.

Jax Ryan, Lexi's boss and CEO of Ryan Corp., has lusted after Lexi for the two years she's worked for him as the head of Risk Mgmt. They had a one night fling in Dublin but Lexi put the kabosh on any further shenanigans even though she lusts after him as well. Jax has a rep for being a player. And he's her boss, after all. She's kept him at arm's length, slinging barbs and innuendo occasionally just to keep the fire stoked, but has made it clear she wants nothing to do with him. However, when Jax tells her he believes she is innocent and wants to help straighten out the mess, she has no choice but to accept. Jax convinces the shareholders to agree to Lexi being under house arrest at Jax's estate for three months (or until she can prove her innocence) while he and Lexi do some sleuthing to figure out who has framed Lexi.

What follows is a lot of meandering. If I were Lexi I'd be a wreck. I'd be doing whatever I could to figure out who in the hell has it out for me and why. Instead Lexi has adopted the Scarlett O'Hara attitude of "I'll worry about that tomorrow." She employs a friend, who we assume has the clout, to dig into the case. That done, she proceeds to enjoy her house arrest at the estate. Getting high with Jax's brother and skinny dipping in the pool just one of the activities. She gives in to Jax as well and they have endless sex. Mind you, I'm all for the sex. It's the relationship I don't buy into. There is no real passion or connection between these two. He seems like a high school jerk at times rather than the CEO of a company. She seems immature and ridiculous.

I think one of the main reasons I felt disconnected from the story is the manner in which it is told. Lexi and Jax constantly direct their comments to the reader. There is an overabundance of phrases like, "I think that's what I mumbled. Did you catch it? Do I really care? Hell, no." and, "And what am I doing, you ask? Care to guess? No?"
This technique is fun when employed sparingly. Too much and it's a total distraction.
I know many readers loved this book. It had the potential to be a winner for me as well. It was just too long, wandered about aimlessly too many times, and I felt nothing but irritation for the characters.

Memorable and fun

Review copy kindly provided via Reading Alley in exchange for an honest review

Omg what did i just read???? I just finished it and i couldn't wait to write a
review. What a fascinating story, Layers is the first book i read from the author
and i have to say i'm really happy i request this book from Reading Alley.
The story begins where Alexia Keith is informed by the CEO Jaxson Ryan that she is framed for
embezzlement and that he is going to help her. That is the last thing she wants from him
(you see they have a thing the two of them, he wants her but she doesn't give in and she resist
the attraction that exists between them....that's not gonna happen forever because you can't resist
JAXSON RYAN forever...)

So unique and fun characters i really enjoyed both of them, Jaxson is the Sexy,Alpha male with
a sense of humor (i laughed a lot when i read that he sent her messages, gifts etc and he couldn't
accept the 'no' answer and he kept sending things..that's a lovely male, i love his persistence).
What can say about Alexia, she is a bad ass character Sexy, beautiful, independent, a career girl with
strong personality and putty mouth. WHAT a combination i had so mush fun with her and her friend
Jules their conversations where...mm there are not words to explain their chats, i just couldn't stop
laughing with them and of course with Alexia's Gram (well no words for her either, the woman just ROCKS ).

A very enjoyable book with a great mixture suspense , steamy, hot scenes , a lot of sense of humor
Also what about the end, what was that????
That's the part of the book that made me really angry and disappointed (i cross my fingers and i hope it wasn't what it seems)
i really looking forward to read what is going to happen next.

I really enjoyed this book. This is my first book by this author, and I look forward to reading many more from her. I really enjoyed her writing style and her witty way with words. This was a story of finding your one true love and convincing her to take a chance on love and finding your fairytale ending.

This story had it all, humor, hot hot sexy times, angst, and everything in between. Alexia was such a strong independent women. She didn't take any shit from anyone and she followed her own rules, even when I wanted to ring her neck and throttle her ass, she still stuck to her stubborn ways.

It's not everyday you read a story where you love the secondary characters just as much (and at time slightly more ) then the main two characters. I loved the cast of this book they ware charming, hilarious, and so damn lovely, I swear my cheeks hurt from all the smiling I was doing.

And let us not forget about Jaxson ! He was a dream come true. Handsome, emotional, honest, and the mouth on him, honey! Pack every damn pair of panties you have girls, cause he will damn near melt every last pair clean off! I'll just warn you beautiful babies thou, book one ends in a bit of a cliff hanger, so make sure have book two ready and waiting, trust me you will need it! Jesus, that Mia is a God damn trip!

I look forward to peeling away each and every juicy layer (see what I did there?) of this series, one amazing book at a time.

LOL funny and SEXY too!

This was the first book I have read by T.L. Alexander and I have to say I loved her writing style, I found myself laughing out loud on more than one occasion and I got some strange looks from the people around me.

Jaxson and Alexia had a brief fling but she got scared and called it off without an explanation and Jax was heartbroken but hopeful. Now a while later Alexia is in some major trouble at work and Jaxson, who is the CEO of Ryan Acquisitions, is the only one that can help her. Now that Jaxson has Lex right where he wants her, under house arrest at his Upstate New York Estate, maybe he can convince her to give them a second chance.

Lex has some crazy friends and I loved the way they would do anything for her and she will do anything for them as well.
I'm off to read More Layers to see what happens next with Lex and Jax...inquiring minds want to know, especially after that cliffhanger.

Jaxson is the poster boy rich guy, used to getting what he wants when he wants it until he meets Alexia. She is the first woman to tell him no and he doesn't know what to do with that, he has no idea how to woo a woman. Alexia has her reasons for staying away from Jaxson, she wants him but is determined to stay away from him until that is no longer an option. someone has been embezzling funds from Jaxson's company and they've made it look like it was Alexia, rather than have her arrested and jailed, Jaxson has her put under house arrest, at his house.

It's all a little OTT and a bit unbelievable at times but for the most part it's a fun read. The dialogue between Alexia and her friends is hilarious as is her inner dialogue although it could have been toned down a bit. There were times when her seemingly light-hearted dialogue didn't match up with what was going on.

I had a couple of little niggles, the time-line felt off to me, she was supposed to stay in Jaxson's house for ninety days but the way I read it she was there for about 16 weeks. And as I mentioned the dialogue was a little overdone at times.

So due to those little niggles I'm going with 3.5, I will be reading the rest of the series soon because my OCD won't let me rest until I find out how it ends.

There needs to be a warning for these kind of books: Caution! Will make you feel all warm and cuddly and then RIP YOUR FUCKING HEART OUT! I cant rate this!? It was 5 stars all the way until the shitfest in the last chapter. It was like a massive FUCK YOU. I stayed up until 3.30 AM to finish this and now I dont think I can go to sleep...too angry...I hope I somehow misread... and the next book is going to magicly explain the last chapter away.

I have read TL Alexanders book 'Layers' and read the reviews. I do not believe the reviews do this book justice. I have read many books in this past year. Easily over 200 and many of them being romance novels, and find this book to be one of the best and quite clearly my favorite.

Alexia's monologues are hilarious and show a young fun side of an successful business woman. Others say it doesn't show the inner thinking of a real 27 year old but I disagree, yes at time she resembles more of a teen than adult but its part of her personality and I believe we all show a bit of our younger selves even when we are older.

As for the romance in this book, it is clear we have been introduced at the middle of the relationship but it is also clear that they both want each other but Alexia's secret is holding there desires off until she gives in but still hides her true self when Jax starts asking questions. Yes during this book their relationship is quite breezy but it does have some major complications at the end.

To find true depth of this book you must read between the lines or it can become quiet confusing. I personally am not that old only 15 but i do believe I understand this book alot more in depth than the other reviewers, maybe the book best suites teenagers, I don't typically think so I just think you need to lose the idea that this is your normal romance novel and try to connect with the characters more, than with other books. As for the ending of this book, yes I was angry when Alexia goes to Jax ready to commit to their relationship and tell why she couldn't before to find that it has been IMPLIED he slept with his ex wife, it becomes damn frustrating but is probably one of the best endings to make you want to read the next book. Well it makes me want to read the next one.

Overall it is a funny romance comedy that brings out nearly every emotion and ends with a maddening cliff hanger. But I am sure once you start reading you won't be able to put it down.

My Rating:

4.5

Favorite Quotes:

“He thinks a legal pad is a place where attorneys hang out, and legal briefs are the tighty-whities that crawl up his crack.”

“You are my crack – my heroin. It physically hurts to think about you not being a part of my life.”

“Eighty-five percent of my swimmers are doing the backstroke. The other fifteen percent can’t make it upstream.”

My Review:

This is my first T.L. Alexander read and shortly after beginning this story, I hurriedly logged into Goodreads and added all her books to my TBR. Layers was a zippy read and good fun most of the through, with clever word-play, witty banter, steamy sensual scenes, and funny word salads. Although there was always this maddening secret that I knew was out there, but weren’t privy to. Then a nasty turn of events and a wicked cliffhanger totally wiped the smile from my face, squeezed my heart, and stole all the air from my lungs. I was devastated! I called the author every nasty name I could think of as I was totally invested in the story. That crafty she-devil had lured me in like a siren - only to let me crash on the rocks... And I would still be fuming, swearing, and stomping my feet if I didn’t already have books 2 and 3 on my kindle. Phew – crisis averted.

What a refreshing book with not the average romance plot.
You have to get used to the unusual writing style, but once you got it you can't put the book down.
The heroine is a very smart, strong lady, who knows exactly what she wants and does not give in to her desires but sticks to her responsibilities. The hero is the typical male although not super intelligent but more an average CEO, who thinks more with his dick and is miffed when the heroine does not fall for him.
The dialogues are hilarious with plenty new neologisms.
I loved all the characters, the main ones and her best friends with their striking personalities.
Great debut of TL Alexander.

I received this book from Reading Alley for an honest review. I loved this story and can't wa to get the next book!!! Embezzlement, humor and holy hotness leave you wanting more. I have not read a more humorous book since Wallbanger! Alexia is witty, funny and oh so sassy when accused of embezzling millions of dollars from work she goes on house arrest to Ryan manor. Jaxson has her right where he wants her and when she finally gives in the sheets start to fly! Now for the end all I will say is to ripped my heart out and left me gasping for air. Can't wait for the next book!

No matter how I try to come up with a word to describe this book I cannot give it enough justice. Hot, sensual, witty, clever, intoxicating, or temptation cannot cover it!

A very head strong woman named Alexia Elizabeth Keith is the leading woman in this book. Her world is full of "smartass" friends, a wonderful job that she loves, and her boss is the sexiest man alive! Soon after she gets back from a vacation she is pulled to the top floor escorted by security. While she racks her brain in trying to guess what was about to happen, her heart throb comes into the room. Sometimes you can fall in love with the wrong man or sometimes you can fall in love with your boss while drunk at a business trip. Alexia is strong and cocky, but unable to let an man break down her walls that are fortified in titanium. She can tell you in six different languages to get lost or kiss me. How can you not want to be her after reading this story? Her world is mixed with straight, lesbian, or gay men that help her in her toughest time. The big secret is released that she is to blame for $20,000,000 from several accounts.

Jaxion Chase Ryan is the playboy type that has women falling at his feet or slipping their room key into his pocket. The only woman on his mind is Alexia "Lex and she won't give in to him. She gives him the choice to either be friends or she quits, he can"t bare to loose her so he stays away. When money goes missing from his company he convinces the board members to hold back from pursuing charges for 90 days. The catch is that she must live at his estate. His lucky breath melts down some of her walls, but not completely. Lots and lots of sex later, she falls for him as well.

This story is told from both characters side and this author can switch between male and female thinking very easy. These characters have a Romeo and Juliet romance. Jax ex wife is hell bent on keeping him all to herself. Thus the worst begins to happen and she slips through his fingers, but takes a big part of him with her as she flees to London. It is very easy to get wrapped into their fictional world and you begin to choose sides on the who is right and who is wrong. If love is a destiny why does life get in the way?

Both make the wrong decisions based on what they think they know and tempers and egos erupt. The decisions they made do not solve any problem, but create more layers of pent up passion!

I love the detailed accounts of Alexia's friends and began to compare my friends to them. The escapades, the adventures, and the love are all the things we value in our own friendships. I love that she (the author) is a open minded person and knows that true love knows no sexual orientation.

This book certainly goes into the erotica section hands down! The sex scenes are not degrading to either men or women, just simply ice burg melting! When reading the book make sure to wear heat resistant glove! I was given this book to review from the author/publisher through Reading Alley and in exchange I give my unbiased opinion.

A story with an interesting premise, despite not being very original. Initially interested due to the heroine’s description, it became evident early on that the synopsis wasn’t joking about her being foul-mouthed. While some readers may not take issue with it, it can be too much for others. Despite this, the heroine remains funny and witty.

That being said, the plot is difficult to believe. Many readers may get to a certain part and say “well that’s not how that works in the real world but okay.” Suspending disbelief makes the story far more enjoyable. Be warned, dear reader, that this novel is explicit with just as much sex as substance. It also ends in a cliffhanger. If any of that is a deal breaker for you, then look elsewhere.

This book was so intense it grabbed me from the very first page. I absolutely loved following the chaotic and intense relationship between Jaxson and Alexia; I was cheering for them and sitting at the edge of my seat waiting to see what would happen. TL Alexander does such an amazing job making the reader become so invested in the lives of everyone in this book. There were so many awesome character in this book that it was easy to become interested in finding out what was going to happen next. I cannot wait to read the rest of the books in this series. Thank you Reading Alley and TL Alexander for letting me read this book and give an honest review.

A Great Re Read

Whenever I read a truly great book I just make a note to go back to it sometime. So I checked my list and it said “read Layered series again.” I found out I had two series named Layered so I picked this one. The book starts in the middle and by page three you have a pretty good idea of what you’re going to get. The characters first and secondary are fabulous, the dialogue is quirky, mildly funny and flows conversationally. Alexa is a 26 year old woman and not “still trying her hand at adulting.” I truly despise young female leads and Jaxson wears his heart on his sleeve. It’s a terrific read.

If you've ever read a book, forgot the plot and kept reading anyway, clap your hands! This is definitely one of those "enjoy the journey" stories. One of the plots was about the embezzlement at Ms. Keith's workplace. Another were her friends (a true cast of characters you feel quite at home with), her grandmother and HER friends, and of course, the sex plot! ALL of which lead to a rollicking GREAT story as each person had their own ideas about Ms Keith's life.

And this is just the beginning! There are two more books! Highly recommended if you like fast-paced romances with a bit of extra on the side

Firstly, you can currently read this book in it's entirety on Goodreads.com. Putting that aside, this is not a straight forward, cliche, pattern filled novel. It will start requiring an acquired taste, and if you are anything like me, you will be thinking about switching to another book when you first began reading.

It's safe to say though, that it gets a little better. Lacking an original ending and sneak peek, it still remains an interesting book. This is a very disorganized novel. Therefore, at times you will get the POV of Jax. It comes with no real reason or purpose. Just more inner ramblings to match that of Alexia. Her inner monologues, resemble the ramblings of a teenager, as oppose to the life of a 27-year-old extremely accomplished woman. Don't even get me started on her Grams, because this entire story seems like it was placed in a martini mixer and shaken!

The romance story was even more unclear than the general plot. I didn't doubt nor believe their relationship. It was overwhelmingly easy, breezy. If I wasn't witness to it, I would call it non existent. It's all one jumbled mess, and the fact that we started from the middle didn't help. There are no clear relationship or sexuality line in this novel. Men are lusting after men and they ain't even gay! As I said before, one jumbled mess.

I didn't make much of a connection with the other characters, but i'm cool with Jax and Alexia individually. Relationship and sex wise, it all felt too friendly. Once minute he is professing his undying lust and love, the next he is shacking up with his ex. Nothing in the world seems to bother Alexia, so this makes it even more complicated to understand or be upset. As I said, I still see them in the friend zone.

There are a lot of questions, and the future of this story, looks filled with even more. There is a tone to this story. It is laid back, regardless of the issue. This story starts and end with a bang, but you don't really feel the severity of it all.

Depth and a whole lot of explanation is needed within this novel. However, throughout it all, I was kept interested and was able to read it in one sitting. It keeps you entertained and interested enough to finish and want more. While you are sure to skim some conversations, or re-read them, because you can't understand what it is about, you have so much questions that you can't help but to see how it will all play out.

I believe the supporting characters were also on an average level. I never fell in love with any of them nor did I hate them. It's conflicting to relay feelings with this novel, because it lacks so much. It's impossible to tie down one emotion with this cast, because they are all over the place.

I would really love to see how this story develops from here, because so much is missing, when so many unwanted parts could have been removed, like the reading of a fictional story in a fictional story o.O
My interest in this story line though is peaked and I hope this very secretive cast will give us something to work with in the next installment.

Layers, TL Alexander

Review from Jeannie Zelos book reviews

Genre:   Romance.

I liked the sound of this but from the first I felt kind of plunged into a story, not sure what exactly was between Jackson and Alexia, wondering if they were together/had been together/intended getting together. Its all very strange.

Then the $20 million embezzlement changes come in and to top that Alexia's flat gets completely trashed, and she has some pretty horrible email and mail threats against her. Is she bothered? Does she go all out to clear her name? Find out who’s trying to frame her? Who’s threatening her? Not really, Jackson puts up the $20 mill and the partners agree to let her have some time provided she stays at his estate so she can look into things. What? All that money and they just say “ toddle off and find the culprit” when most of them believe its her? That won’t go well with legal charges later as they threaten – the system doesn’t work that way.

The whole book follows like that, major catastrophes, huge events happen and they just chat, drink, swear a lot and ignore it.....The goodreads blurb says “The Layer Series is written for adults, by an adult (this is questionable). “ and I can only agree – it IS questionable....Even something simple like buying a coffee is turned into some kind of disaster, complete with swearing, accusations of anything, a chance to gloat or score one over someone else...The characters really act like young teens at times.

Its a shame as for me this could have been a good story but everyone, each character and each action has to be made so OTT as to be unbelievable – its like car crash TV in that I had to keep reading even though I was snorting out “What!! Really???” Its on Kindle Unlimited and as the ending is so cliff-hanger awful I had to know what happened next, so got part two. More of the same though sadly and if its possible its even more OTT :-( It's a shame because underneath all the over exaggerated plots and people there’s a story I could have enjoyed. Pare it down, cut out the waffle and tighten up the plots to make them more realistic and I'd have enjoyed this. Still I'm sure hundreds, maybe thousands of readers will love it just as it is. We all want different types of reading.

If you love Big Bother, X Factor, celebrity magazines and reality TV you’ll probably love this but for me – nope, a fail …

Stars:Two, just too OTT.

When Alexia Keith warns the reader on the first page that she is going to tell her story in the middle, she is not kidding. This is a risky approach in any type of writing, especially in erotica where the author tries to build a connection between the reader and the characters. When you sit down with TL Alexander’s Layers, throw away all your preconceived ideas of how a book should be written.

Disregard the fact that this story is in dire need of a copy editor’s TLC. Disregard that the point of view shifts abruptly between the two main characters. Disregard the fact that all the puzzle pieces don’t come together until the end.

Instead, focus on the off-the-wall conversations that will have you adding new words to your vocabulary. It’s probably not politically correct, but “linguistatardic” is an incredibly cool word.

While this jewel is admittedly rough around the edges, there is something compelling about it. Perhaps the best description is that Layers is unconventional and unpredictable. The one quality that is predictable, though, is the intense chemistry between the main characters. In true erotic form, the characters burn up any surface they choose. The heat is intense, but it meshes perfectly with the story line.

Unfortunately, it is a story line that comes with a cliffhanger. Make that a doozy of a cliffhanger. The second part is supposed to be available sometime in 2014. If you are an impatient reader, it might be better if you add Layers to your wish list and get both parts together.

The reader in me was intrigued while my editing half was horrified. This is definitely not your typical erotic tale. Instead, take biting sarcasm and jaw-dropping humor, mix in some incredible naughtiness and you get a new type of story. It is one you won’t soon forget, especially if you are sitting with me on the cliff waiting for the next installment.
