From Jean Johnson, the national bestselling author of the “must-read” (The Best Reviews) Sons of Destiny novels comes a magical novella of an extraordinary journey of profound pleasure and exquisite danger...
Who is entitled to the Flame Sea throne? For twin beauties Arasa and Kalasa, the question of their royal birthright has driven them both to find the answer by any means necessary. But to determine the rightful heir means that they must discover who was born first. So begins a legendary pilgrimage for the twins, each accompanied by a man of their most sensual dreams. For Kalasa it’s her devoted fiancé; for Arasa, it’s the handsome sorcerer Elrik.
But the legendary odyssey is not without its dangers—for one of them is not at all whom they appear to be, and their true motives are in question. Now, as treachery and desire become one, the truth of the birthright could be as perilous as the very future of the Flame Sea itself.
Birthright previously appeared in Elemental Magic

Jean Johnson currently lives in the Pacific Northwest, has played in the SCA for 25 years, sings a lot, and argues with her cat about territorial rights to her office chair. She loves hearing from her readers, and has a distinct sense of humor. Right now she's living in a home with zone heating & decent plumbing, but hopes to some day put turrets and ramparts on it so that it looks like a castle.
This was a good start to a new series that seem to share the same world as so many of the author's other series. I liked that Arasa was so level headed and found people that liked that trait in her. It served her well as she was betrayed by someone who should have never thought about betrayed her. I liked the decision that Arasa made as to the punishment and how she would go forward.
Birthright is a novella that introduces a new series by Jean Johnson, Flaming Seas. From earlier reviews, I expected more. It lacked the quality that I enjoyed in earlier books by the author and the series is not very promising. The Theirs Not to Reason Why series was superb, and I also fully enjoyed the Sons of Destiny series.
I read this as a short story when it was published in Elemental Magic and after reading it I immediately went looking for more books by Jean Johnson. If you have enjoyed her "Sons of Destiny" books or the "Guardians" series I think you will definitely enjoy this book. If you haven't read any Jean Johnson, I think this is a great introduction to her fantasy. Her descriptions of the world are great and I felt like I got enough information in the story to get an idea of what the world is like.
For those who prefer the "fade to black" romance, you should be warned that at least in the short story version I read, there was at least one detailed sex scenes but I felt it was well done.
Lovely short story about a red headed mage who meets a beautiful unusual woman traveling in the desert and in helping her finds true love. Very fairy tale, almost a thousand and one Arabian Nights style. Definitely not to be missed if you're a Jean Johnson fan, which I am. And if you haven't read any of her other books, this story could start you on a great reading journey.
I loved it. It’s so original. I've found myself another series to read.
Two twin princesses have to each search for and travel personal journeys to discover who the first-born is. One finds true love. The other treachery.
The world base of this, while basically fantasy Arabic, is different enough to be fresh. I love how the land reacts to the true leader and justice is served. And the love scene isn’t bad either.
