It's politics, fairies, and intrigue in this dark enemies-to-lovers adaptation of Midsummer Night's Dream. The course of true love never did run smooth.
Ivy
As the daughter of the president, I’ve had my life planned out for me: college, law school, politics. I should have guessed that my mother would plan my marriage, too.
She needs a political success, which means I have to wed my enemy for publicity. I hate Lex Fairfax so much, it burns. I don’t know how I’ll spend three weeks at a remote castle in Ireland with him, his girlfriend, and my boyfriend without our secrets tearing us apart.
When a mysterious stranger overhears my drama, she takes pity on me…in her own way.
Lex
I hate Ivy Washington. She’s annoying and frustrating, and she gets under my skin like no one else. Marrying her would be a special kind of hell.
I just need to get through this without my past coming back to haunt me. Everyone keeps secrets for their own reasons, but mine will destroy all four of us.
When a Midsummer party turns into a nightmare, we learn there are consequences to making a vow in a magical place. And the fairies never play fair.
Jena Doyle writes smut for smut’s sake. No apologies. No shame. And definitely no judgement. When she’s not dreaming up dirty words for wild hearts, she enjoys traveling, binge watching trash TV, and dabbling in tarot and astrology. She holds a bachelor’s degree in English and Creative Writing, and enjoys rambling about Shakespeare's gay agenda.
I think this was the hottest book I’ve read this year! It was my first with this poly thing. Really hot. Ms Doyle, where did you get those very very naughty ideas from?
I can’t rate it 5⭐️ because there’s something still unexplained in the story. But once I can explain that, more stars will fall from the sky…
That thing in Ireland … what the hell happened there?! Who or what is that Siobhan character?
If you want to read a scorching blazing torrid story, here’s a good one for you.
I received the ARC for free through BookSirens and this is my honest opinion about it.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I'm sure this story is good, but I struggled to get in to it. I am having some health issues that impacted my reading time so I'll look in to finishing it at a later date
I had no clue what this book would be when I started it, I like to go in blind. The style is very unlike anything I’ve ever read before; there’s some politics, faeries which I didn’t expect at all, and with the beginning, I had no idea how the story would unravel. Pleasantly, it does end on a cliffhanger, because I’m not ready to say goodbye to these characters, and I’m looking forward to more of the faerie being unveiled. There’s a prequel novella that I’ll read next. This book is a slow read for me - it’s not something I whipped through, I found I took my time and gave it a lot of thought, and the author does a great job of describing the characters’ inner thoughts and feelings, and pulls you in. I can’t say I fully agree with everything they choose/do, but they are their own person with their own motivations etc. So that was really interesting. Overall I’m definitely going to read the remaining books in the series when the author releases them. The spice scenes are delicious, plain and simple. There’s a quite a lot sprinkled throughout the book, so while it can be a slow read, but spicy scenes are generous and detailed. I like the author’s writing style. I got an ARC copy and I’m leaving a review of my own volition.

𝐌𝐲 𝐓𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 ↴ Wow. I could not put this book down. It was too good. Honestly what’s there not to love about this. It was well written, very entertaining. It was weird but in such a good way. It’s a hot book that’s for sure. This has fairies, enemies to lovers, arranged marriage and O r g i e s in the woods. It kind of gave me True Blood vibes in a way, and lord knows I love that show. I definitely needed more scenes with the group, though the scenes we did get were enough to satisfy. It was so easy to love the characters, though there were times I wanted to reach in and smack a certain someone (*cough* lex *cough). I however was not prepared for Carter’s text after taking off to LA… AND WHAT WAS THAT ENDING?! A cliffhanger? Really? I need book two in my hands immediately.

🫧 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐥𝐚𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐫 🫧 This is an Advanced Reader copy. Although this book was given to me as an ARC my thoughts are my own.
erotica on drugs. what else is there to say? 😂 if you know the play a midsummer night’s dream, you’ll understand. if you liked the play, you might like this book. i loved the play but this book was an acid trip. not in a bad way, just a weird way. i didn’t hate it.
That had to be one of the strangest reads of the year!! I have some serious conflicting emotions regarding this book - and yet it left me contemplating the characters, the plot, the possible outcome (yes it ends on a cliff hanger!)
The twisted relationships, the love triangles and love square (is that even a thing?) trope was something else, the enemies to lovers. All this creates a celtic knot of divine proportions.
Bound by duty and family. Wanting their own lives Ivy and Lex have been enemies since diapers. With the death of Lex's brother Marcus both of their worlds fall apart for very different reasons - leading them on paths that will cross back over in strange ways. As if they are tied together for life - a constant intersection.
Falling in love with unexpected people only to find they secretly pine for the person they first loved. And that enemy to lovers trope - yep that one's in here too - well, you will just have to figure out how this celtic knot of craziness unravels.
Twisty, interesting - yes, certainly interesting. I thought I'd read it over a 2-3 day period and decided to forego sleep to reach the conclusion.
This is a complex book, with complex characters, struggles and some themes that may be disturbing to some. All in all a good read - I enjoy books on occasion that push the limits and my comfort zone. But I especially like books whose story captivates my thoughts and makes me wonder how it will all play out.

As a fan of Midsummer Night's Dream, I enjoyed reading this! It has fairies, politics, enemies to lovers and more. Ivy and Lex learned the lesson of being careful when making vows or any kind of promise in a place that is magical- and also fairies- always be careful around fairies.
I can't wait to read what comes next!
This does end on a cliffhanger!.
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I picked this up during the “Stuff Your Kindle” day where so many books were free on the kindle store. I didn’t think much of it when i snagged it but thought “why not, it’s free!” And boy was I taken for a damn ride.
I was HOOKED. The story flows so effortlessly. I’m normally not one for American politics “royalty” but it wasn’t so terrible. The author focuses on the dynamics between the characters and their strange interconnected web of love, pining and mutual agony over fulfilling their dreams and being with the ones (all four of them) they love.
I’m also floored that this will be a 4 book series! I expected this to be a standalone and now i have to WAIT for the release of the other three books!!!!! But realizing that this will be four books has me kinda giddy. I was slightly disappointed this didn’t have more fairies and magical tomfoolery but now I’m realizing this was just the intro to the story. We get their years growing up, falling in love, falling in love again and falling in love again and then dealing with the fallout of “reality.” This ends on a cliffhanger that gets me excited to see where the group will go and hopefully how they can all come together again.
EDIT: JUST SAW THAT BOOK 2 & 3 ARE ALREADY PUBLISHED AND I ONLY HAVE TO WAIT LIKE A WEEK FOR BOOK 4 TO COME OUT!
I love retellings, I like to read these kind of books and when I came across Midsummer, I was intrigued. I like Shakespeare's work, but I can't say that I'm a big fan or that I know exactly what Midsummer Night's Dream was about. Boy I was in for a treat.
The blurb was good, even tough I'm not into politics, I love a good enemies-to-lovers trope, but what reeled me in was the why choose and of course the spice.
I had so much more! Since the beginning of this book, I was hooked. Jenna Doyle lured me in this story and I was incapable to stop reading. In each chapter, I could find something to keep me going, I wanted to know, and when I did know, I wanted to see how the characters reacted. Ivy and Lex were real life people for me, their story totally believable. Their meetings with Miri and Carter solidified my love for them, the way they were in awe with them.
I was so not ready to dip in the surnatural, I'm a mood reader, so sometimes I choose a book and come back later without checking the complete blurb. But I love it, it was inserted so smoothly in the story, in a way that you almost believe it could happen for real.
And the spice…. is spicing alright! 10% in and you have the first scene. Again, I went in blind so a lot of what happen, I didn't see it coming. I can say that it did do things to me, it was well written and I felt the characters feelings. And it is a melting pot of a bit of everything, bit of kink, sapphic, MM, group sex, etc. Again so nicely done, and I read a lot of smut!
Careful of the cliffhanger! Such a good one, I cannot wait until october for the second book (out of 4!!!) to come out. I will put it in my planner because I can't miss the rest of the story!
I was offered the chance to read this book in advance for free and I am leaving this honest review voluntarily.
I have never read anything like this novel before. The way it is written is fascinating, and I am over the moon about it. I would consider Midsummer a Tragedy, in the best sense. It takes A Midsummer Night's Dream, and twists it into something modern, yet so familiar, and adds a plethora of the dirtiest scenes imaginable. I started reading this novel knowing it was fantasy, but not understanding how or when it would reveal itself as such. I fell in love with the characters, Lex, Ivy, Miri, and Carter, quickly. Each of them is so complicated and multifaceted, it was difficult to *not* love them. The story went from insane to acid trip REALLY quickly. I was having just as much trouble believing the events as the characters were! I was questioning my sanity, and started feeling the same frustrations as Ivy. I devoured this book, and cannot stop thinking about the characters, the magic, the tragedy, and the absolute insanity of the whole situation (including the parents- the absolute worst.) The cliffhanger ending had my jaw dropping, and I am so excited to read the next book, Samhain, when it comes out!
Spice level- 10/5 Story- 5/5 (as long as you're into Tragedy style writing- which, I do.) Characters- 4.5/5 (would have liked more development of Miri) Character development- 4.5/5 World building- 5/5.

Cliffhanger Warning!!! We had many feelings about this book and a lot of them were conflicting. We both hated and enjoyed it at the same time. We say this because it’s a whole new genre/ style we are used to/ most comfortable reading but as we got further into the book we both started to enjoy it more! The two main characters grew on us and we both started to feel empathy towards them, especially during their own struggles. There are some surprising parts to this book and some you’ll meet some faeries and magic, but you’ll also read a whole load of sex. When an author says they write smut, you want to see smut and this author delivered and more on those scenes! Reading how Alex (Lex) and Ivy navigate their parents fame and the challenges it brings to their personal lives including the relationship between them and others plus other factors which you’ll will see in the book. It’s a bonus that you get to read both their point of views through the story.
This book definitely pushed us both out our comfort zone and we look forward to reading the next book and seeing the story continue.
We appreciate getting a digital copy of the book as an ARC copy.
Such an amazing story, filled with so many emotional moments. I loved the look back in time that chronicled how Lex and Ivy got to their wedding. It was heart warming and heart breaking to view their relationships with Miri and Carter. The sexual encounters in this story were off the charts hot - smoking hot. And it involved every combination you can possibly imagine. I loved the folklore that was imbued throughout the story, along with the comparisons to A Midsummer Night's Dream play. I've read and seen many variations of the play and this is one of my fave takes on it so far.
There is a prequel story to this book that gives a look at the fae realm and the interaction between the two courts. It's steamy on its own, but it also sets up some of the backstory for this book. It's not necessarily needed to understand this book at all, but why not read it - it's another fantastic story from Jena.
I am so looking forward to book 2 in this series - not that I'm wishing away the summer, but can Samhain get here any quicker :-).

Cliffhanger warning! So many conflicting feelings about this book. I enjoyed and hated it at the same time. Somehow (I say somehow because I was not a big fan of the characters or where the a story was going), about halfway through the book I started to feel empathy for the main characters and their struggle broke my heart a little. I don’t want to give anything away so I’ll keep this brief and say the book will surprise you and has some unexpected magic and sex - a whole lot of sex. There’s a reason the authors bio says she writes smut for smuts sake! Ivy and Alex are really our main characters and have to navigate the challenge their parents’ fame brings and what that means for their own lives. We watch how it impacts relationships, career choices and so much more. I am looking forward to continuing the series when the next book releases in the fall!
I appreciated getting a digital copy of the book as an ARC with no strings attached.
The story is told from dual POV and each of them have a very different feel.

Midsummer By Jena Doyle Pub Date: 6/18/24
Midsummer is a retelling of Shakespeare's A Midsummer's Night Dream....but way more steamy.
Ivy and Lex come from two powerhouse political families and they hate each other. Before they both leave to go on a trip for school they are told by their parents they are to be married to help further their parent's political careers.
As they travel abroad for their trip, along with their partners Miri and Carter, they struggle with the secret of their upcoming engagement. On their first day in their new surroundings they are warned about the woods and the fairies that are in them. Ivy is befriended by a local and is invited to a Midsummer party in the woods.
During the party in the woods, something happens and the four of them marry each other and enter into a polyamorous relationship. But can they figure out what in the fairy magic happened in those woods???
Can they navigate their new arrangement and find a way to get out of their parent's plan?
Midsummer ends on a cliffhanger and book two will have more about the fairy magic. Overall, a steamy read with enemies to lovers, friends to Lovers, and LGBTQIA+ themes.
Midsummer by Jena Doyle was an exciting, very spicy and drama filled book. I loved the retelling of A Midsummer’s Night Dream. This book had me turning the pages to see what would happen next. I loved the storyline; it was original and captivating. The characters were complex and all had an undeniable and explosive chemistry. This book is deliciously dark and off the charts spicy. I thought that this book had the right amount of action, drama, spice, angst and more drama. It did leave off on a cisgender, and I can’t wait to devour book two!!!
Lex and Ivy had such an oil and water chemistry, but their banter and wit was comical and heartbreaking. Miri and Carter were the perfect addition to their already explosive relationship. My heart broke for all of them. They were the perfect amount of what the other needed to calm their storms. Such a beautifully written retelling of a Shakespeare classic!!!.

Shakespeare meets The American President series Y’all. This is the first part of a Midsummer Night’s Dream reimagining. The imagination needed to weave this tale is inspiring. The twists and turns, the college age students on a quest to find themselves. The pressures of politics. And then the discovery of faeries. Ivy and Lex hate each other in a SUPER hot way, and want to enjoy a last summer before they’re forced into an arranged marriage by their uber-controlling families. Their best friends and lovers, Miri and Carter, attend the theater intensive with them, which is when the faeries intervene. This Shakespeare retelling – or really, Shakespeare reimagining - is off the charts hot with all sorts of smeggs scenes in between deep dives into love versus duty and a blurring of the line between reality and fantasy. It ends in a cliffhanger, with Miri and Carter’s story next – the full series will be out in a matter of months, so don’t hesitate to dive in!
Okay…. At first I was intrigued by the book. But what I wasn’t expecting was the relationship between 4 people. I felt that the description of the book what not forth telling of this intense visual depiction of what happens. This was not my cup of tea. I felt uncomfortable reading it as the scene were intense and not what I wanted to see. The actual story line thought and plot I felt was good. I rather enjoyed that part and was what drove me to finish the book. I would say this is a very spicy book which again is okay, but the scenes between the friends were hard for me when it was all 4 of them as I just didn’t care for it. The I enjoyed the boyfriend girlfriend aspect. If you get past that part it is an interesting story. But I’m not sure I’ll read the next book. I would like to thank booksirens and the author for allowing me to read this!

This feels like every polyamorous dream series. I just can’t believe how underrated but also brilliant this entire series is. The complexity of relationships, love, mental health and personalities was delicious. I have no words!! The way every subplot tied together with the main plot was so good. I’m literally so upset that I don’t know if I’ll be able to find another book/series as good as this. It’s so refreshing to read a poly book that goes beyond the ‘reverse harem with mm’ trope. Having multiple main characters was perfect, I loved reading everyone’s different writing styles and feelings. There were times I did hold my breath. Aside from the fairies, the love felt more realistic as their fears were very human and understanding. The dynamic between each pair was so different and so necessary. If I write anymore I’ll just ramble. I love this series so much, it’s very dear to me as a bi poly reader, it felt like it was written directly for me. Very high chance I will be rereading.
⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 stars! Midsummer was unlike anything I’ve read before and although I’ve read some fairy smut before (think ACOTAR), this dedinitely felt like an exploration into the darker world of erotic romance but with fairies. I enjoyed the plot and the steamy scenes were 🔥🔥🔥🔥, but I definitely would have liked some more backstory on the characters, especially with Lex. I feel like this would have helped me feel more connected to the characters. This would have bumped it up to 5 stars for me!
All in all, I think Jena Doyle did an excellent job at world building (especially with the midsummer festival scene!) and I really felt immersed in the character’s world. I can’t wait for the next books in the series!
Disclaimer: I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
In this A Midsummer Night’s Dream queer and poly adaptation, the webs are positively tangled. The pining! The yearning!
This is the height of bisexuality. What’s more bisexual than deciding to fuck your best friends? Answer: Nothing. What’s more polyamorous than deciding to be with all of them? Again, nothing. And finally, we have a Celtic and Shakespeare-coded pagan plot sure to thrill the audience.
I just stumbled upon this little treat and it delivered. Thank goddess we don’t have to wait long until the series is complete. I would have been a mess about it. Who am I kidding? After that cliffhanger I AM a mess about it. Please read it and join me in my distress.
Fast burn with spanking, group sex, hair pulling, biting.
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ POV: Dual 1st Past
In IVY's words, they were “the most f-up group of friends on the planet”, and I couldn't agree more. But one thing is they love and care for each other.
If polyamorous relationship is your thing, then you don't want to miss out on this book. However, if it's not your cup of tea (like me), you would still enjoy how well written this book is. Ms Doyle really did a good job with the story.
Despite the characters being young, wild and free, and a little bit silly at times, they were so mature and not annoying.
You find yourself rooting for their happiness, hoping all things work well as they wish. You read excited and anticipating the next bombshell, you actually enjoy reading the story.
This was a wild, twisty adaptation of a Midsummer’s Night Dream, and unlike anything I’ve ever read before. The premise, although adapted from Shakespeare, was still unique and interesting. I loved all of the characters, and the classic tropes that were woven throughout the story. There were some crazy (in a good way) scenes that I was not expecting, but loved nonetheless.
This was a spicy one, for sure. The MCs entangled in a messy love triangle/square?, and delicious poly situations. HOT and almost primal scenes in the woods. 😳 Tricksy fairies, enemies to lovers, arranged marriages, an Irish castle setting, political intrigue… just so many tasty things going on. I was, and remain, intrigued by the story, and I’m glad the next book is out so I can jump right in.
Midsommer was a blast to read! As a lover of psychology and trash reality tv, this book was everything. We get two POV’s providing us an in-depth look at this spicy quad (two women, two men) who are all hot for each other and a little bit of magic mixed in.
Liked: complexity of the relationships the spice
Didn’t like: Needed more reasons for the enemies side of the enemies-to-lovers trope (honestly not clear why Lex & Ivy hated each other that much, felt inexplicably too intense for the reasons shared). I just didn’t feel it A little too men-are-dominant, women-are-submissive for my taste
Overall, I ended up liking this book a lot more that I thought it was even though the magic/fantasy side of it was more of an aftertaste.
I don't even know what to say about this book without giving anything away. It's an amazing story told in dual POV between Ivy and Lex, both of whom have to navigate growing up in the public eye in political families. The story has lots of drama and lots of smut, which was very well done and added to the storyline. There are even faeries and Irish myths, so you get a very diverse and rich story. This ends on a cliffhanger with a lot of unanswered questions, which makes me really want to read the next book in the series.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This book was very confusing for me. I usually like books with polyamorous relationship but this book did not work for me mainly because there was a higher focus around Lex and Ivy but Miri and Carter were not given much importance in this book.
Having said that I do like the mysterious aspect of this book and especially the parts where the main characters have differential gaps in their memories. It adds a mystical factor to the book.
The book was fast paced. It had an enemies to lovers aspect to it which I liked. Plot was very entertaining till the very end so I will give this book 3 stars read for me!!
Midsummer by Jena Doyle is a retelling of sorts of A Midsummer Night’s Dream by Shakespeare. I had no idea how this book would be, but I found it a bit too steamy, but that’s personal of course. It is a good story though, a modern version of an old tale, with a good plot and story-line. The writing style and world-building is extensive and detailed. There is a lot of action/romance, secrets, tension, mystery and mythology. The characters come across good.
Midsummer was not the book I was hoping for, but maybe I was expecting a Shakespearean story. I have mixed feelings about this book and I do no think this was the book for me.
Got the arc for this and writing the review voluntarily
Masterfully written. There's rivalry, there's drama, there's secrets and tension and then there's this looming mystery. I am with the main characters and looking for clues as to what happened and I'm feeling their emotions and I'm hooked. This book could very well be a show / movie because of how detailed and beautifully everything was.
I am desperately waiting for book 2 and book 3 and book 4. I kid you not, I can picture this book as a movie/show. I just love drama.
WoW! That was an intense, incredibly beautiful retelling of A Midsummer Night's Dream! I wasn't to keen on the cliffhanger it ended on, and it's a long way to Samhain for the next book, but the story is so worth it! The characters are amazing and they pull you in from page one and don't let go. I can't sing praises for this author loud enough. You should really sink your teeth into this one, no pun intended.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This was a very interesting take on a story. The author's writing style is very detailed, as she gives lots of insight on the characters and such, while at the same time giving loads of smut throughout the book.
I don't want and can't say too much without spoilering anything, but it was a fairly fast and well written read to me and I'm looking to reading more of the story in the fall. It does have a slight cliffhanger, so I'm intrigued to where the story is going.
I received this book as an arc and am leaving my review of my own volition.
I thought this was a great retelling of Midsummer Night's Dream, it uses the dark romance concept and enjoyed the overall feel perfectly. The characters worked with this universe, it had that fantasy element and enjoyed the romantic eroticism that I looked for. The characters had the spirit of the original story and thought Jena Doyle has a great writing style. I'm excited to read more in the Midsummer series and was glad I read this.
