This was a quick, 'suspend all reality' read, and whilst I loved the premise, I think it could have been better served more fleshed out, particularly in regard to the 'time travel mystery' element, as well as the relationship development between the MCs.
I don't typically read time travel romance, but I got the ARC request from Declan Rhodes and one clicked it, because Declan Rhodes and hockey... and I was pleasantly surprised about how easily Dylan's time travel into the past was handled...
I enjoyed the balance of romance and hockey, as Dylan can't help but suggest 'new' ideas to his new minor league coach while falling for Nico... I love that the past creates a safe place for Dylan to explore an important part of himself and embrace his sexuality.
This was a fun, quick read and a definite trip back in time to a really fun era of my childhood.
Reviewed for Love Bytes – 3.75 hearts. Dylan was a rising ice hockey star. He loved everything about the game but remained on the outside looking in. Dylan wore masks and kept everyone at arms-length because he had a secret he couldn’t let out, for the risk of losing everything he found dear. Then, a pair of skates transports Dylan forty-four years into the past. Dylan meets Nico, and the two form an instant connection. The question was whether Dylan would, could, or even had a choice to return to his own time. The blurb for this time travel tale is highly enticing. The story concept is superb, and parts are exquisitely written – especially the atmospherics. However, the technicalities and some pitfalls of self-publishing bring down the overall rating. There is a chance that the copy I received was not the final edition, but I have no paperwork to enforce that possibility. Therefore, I have reviewed Timeless as if it is the final edition. The story is told in the first person from the viewpoint of Dylan and Nico. There’s the odd slip between first/third person and present/past tense. Also, some minor autonomous body parts appear, which isn’t unexpected when writing in the first person. Nevertheless, they can be overcome with qualifying sentences, such as without conscious thought. It was lovely to read a story where ice hockey isn’t simply a background feature – the adrenaline-filled games are experienced, and I felt like I was on the ice with the players. The rallying atmosphere of an ice hockey game and other emotional aspects of the story are very well written. However, self-publishing can bring a set of potential complications. There are several essentials when writing. Among other things, a good editor and a ruthless pre-reader are worth their weight in gold. An author reads their work multiple times, changes things, and then does another re-read. Familiarity breeds contempt, and things can get missed. Editors/pre-readers ask questions that an author may not have thought of and pick up on elements that may have been missed. There are some issues with the story that would/should have been picked up by someone in the authors' team. For example, how did Nico know Dylan’s name before they were introduced? – this is either a mistake or was written in the third person. Either way, it’s a booboo. Dylan calls Nico to pick him up at the arena when they haven’t long left the practice ice. The narrative says forty years into the past when 2024 to 1980 = -44. It’s a small detail, but it makes a difference in the confidence a reader has in the narrative. Consequently, they second-guess other information. Logistic intimate positioning made me question some lines of sight and paranormal focus. These issues are small in word count but make a big difference to the overall reading experience. Traveling to the past, where he was unknown, allowed Dylan to discover himself and showed him how life could be. It also brings some sadness as Dylan looks at the world, knowing what happiness and disasters are in its future, yet unable to do anything that wouldn’t make him sound crazy. The emotional upheaval and questions flying around in Dylans' mind were a pleasure to read. Dylan is a character with whom many people, not just sports players, will connect. Nico is aware of the world as it stands in the 80’s. He is guarded about Dylan’s origins yet acknowledges the hole that Dylan fills in his soul. Nico also knows a kindred spirit when he sees one. His gaydar is top-notch. Thus, things between them move at quite a pace. Some readers may question the pace, while others may support the ‘live for today’ element. Initially, I was in camp one, but eventually transferred to camp two. The creativity behind this story was superb. The tale has its adrenaline boost, mushy parts, beautiful, and reflective moments. Could a few extra sentences here and there elevate some scenes from ‘simply accepted’ to ‘accepted with explained reasoning – most definitely. A different font for imagined conversations, too, would have prevented some confusion. Once corrected, this story could easily be a huge winner. This book was provided free in exchange for a fair and honest review for Love Bytes.
Declan Rhodes is a new author for me, but i´m surprised. I really liked his writing, the develoment of characters and how he recreates the atmosphere of the 80´s .
First we meet Dylan, a young NFL player, it seems he has successful in his profession , but on a personal level no so much. He is in the closet ,doubts if he will ever come out. His life outside hockey is reduced to reading books, doesn´t party with his teammates. One day, after the practice, he finds a glowing skates that transport him back in time, to the year 1980.
In 1980 finds another hockey team and Nico.
Nico Santoro is optimistic, kind, hardworking and handsome man. He helps Dylan , even thought he doesn´t know him. Soon he begings to feel atracted to him.
I liked so much the atmosphere of the 80´s. The household appliances, the music, the movies and the gay scene at the time. The scene in the Garage is stunning.
I liked the development of the characters, Dylan makes a big chance throught the book.
The scifi or magic element of the book ,serves to start the action. But it´s not clear the reason for the skates appears randomly where Dylan trains but later is a family legacy.
I miss a playlist with the songs mentioned in the book.
[I received an ARC for an honest review.] Rating: 3.5 stars (7/10) Spice: 🌶️🌶️ Tropes: time travel, hockey romance, coming out, NHL, 1980's core, 'what-is-technology', mystery Review: I was so intrigued when I read the premise for this story - hockey romance and time travelling? Sign me up! The story follows Dylan, who is a closeted NHL player in 2024, and who is struggling with trying to isolate himself from his teammates and their camaraderie so that he doesn't slip up and let them know that he's gay. One thing leads to another, and a pair of skates he found hiding deep in the arena send him back over 40 years to 1980. There he comes across Nico, a hockey player in a junior league who's dreams of being an NHL star seem close but also too far away.
I really enjoyed the dynamic and the message of this story. Dylan and Nico quickly fall into a relationship, and you get to see Dylan finally live openly and without fear, and to enjoy life and the game and friends/teammates without fear of being himself. Nico is the biggest golden retriever and we love how open and happy he is about his love for Dylan. The story does take place over a month or two, so it is a little bit insta-lovey, but there was this undercurrent of stress and mystery about what Dylan was going to do, now being in a different time, and whether he would want to go back to the NHL in his time or stay with Nico, and whether he even has a choice in it.
I found the latter 30% of the story really interesting, and I could kind of see it going the way it did, but I did find the whole section about Dylan very interesting (keeping it vague to avoid spoilers 😉). I think that the story rounded off very well, and I love that we got to see things going on in the future, and where things ended up. It was a very sweet and interesting story, a little bit mysterious (if not the tiniest bit corny at times), and overall I had a great time.
Timeless is a standalone MM romance by Decland Rhodes. This book has the two things that I am a complete sucker for: ice hockey romance and time travel romance. It's a book that makes you confront the fact that 1980 is over 40 years ago (*laughing on the inside because I was born in the late 80s).
This is a full length novel that features 23 year old NHL player, Dylan Mercer, he has some wicked skills that means he has the talent to become one of the greats, Dylan is gay and is fearful of coming out in a sporting world that could ruin his dreams of being picked as an NHL All Star. He has a deep love for the sport and refers to the even in 1980 called the Miracle On Ice, where the US Olympic team defeated the USSR at seemingly impossible odds.
I actually read up on this game and the movie that Dylan referenced while I was reading this book. Really fascinating moment in sport!
When Dylan is magically transported back in time, he meets Nico, who is a moment of an amateur hockey team. Obviously, Dylan's skills blow them away. 2024 NHL skills is far more refined than 1980 NHL skills, let alone an amateur squad. While being gay would have been hard back in 1980, this is a really gentle romance between Nico and Dylan (I honestly giggled when I thought of "oh, they're just roommates").
I enjoyed how the time travel aspect was handled. Of course, going back to 1980 would be a lot easier in terms of adapting. Ultimately, this is a romance with rose coloured glasses, but it was sweet and I loved how both of these characters developed and came to terms with the impossible. Totally charming. I loved this book so much!.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Bottom line: I really liked this book a lot! Yeah, time-travel stories have been done before, although this one had some unique twists to it, and I really appreciated the creativity.
This book could have used a better editor & proofreader as there were a few glitches. For instance: when Nico first sees Dylan in the hockey locker room, but they actually haven't really met nor introduced themselves yet, twice Nico refers to Dylan by name BEFORE they introduce themselves.
However, there were not any noticeable major grammatical errors, besides those...unless I was so absorbed in the storyline that I missed them, which is quite possible; good story!
I'm a hockey fan, so that's a starting point in the book's favor right there (grin)!
It was quite interesting to see how each player dealt with being gay, and how the timelines influenced what was happening to each of them, not to mention their team players and their coaches.
I think it was very wise of Dylan to keep most of his future knowledge to himself, not knowing what or how it might influence things. He did share a few things, like his mobile phone, but only with his boyfriend Nico. Oh, and some really outstanding hockey moves!
And I didn't fault him for not getting into the whole world-wide AIDS epidemic with Nico, but he did make sure to ask Nico if he was practicing safe sex. (yes!) 1980: AIDS was looming fairly soon, so they could talk about it from when it started anyway.
I really appreciated the way they communicated and how they watched out for each other, both on the rink and in life.
And, I really, really liked the ending! Two thumbs up! 👍👍
The concept and blurb were enough to draw me to this story, after all it is a hockey romance that includes time travel to the era of the USA miracle Olympic hockey team. How could I pass that up? This was also a new author to me, so I was looking forward to checking them out.
Dylan is a young NHL star who is transported back in time from 2024 to 1980 thanks to a glowing pair of ice skates he comes across at the rink one day. Nico is a player on a local team in 1980 and is the first person Dylan encounters in that time, and they wind up forming a bond and eventually much more than that.
To be honest, a lot of the events throughout the story were stretching my suspension of disbelief (I mean, you do have to suspend it a bit considering the premise hangs on time travel, but with this story even more so), and some things just felt too convenient and at times unlikely. For me, some of this can be chalked up to the writing style as well as it really wasn’t my cup of tea.
The overall story of how Dylan and Nico meet, develop a relationship, and what happens from there is interesting and you are rooting for them to be able to stay with each other in the end, just for me the execution wasn’t quite to my expectations. If you’re an M/M hockey romance fan and also like time travel stories, you’ll likely want to check this one out though…and bonus points for the 1980 setting.
This was a different type of book in the best way. The title is very fitting for this story of a HEA that was earned in the most peculiar way.
Nico & Dylan are the sweetest, separately as well as together. Dylan struggles with who he is deep down while Nico embraces who he is. The introvert with the extrovert. The way that their story unfolds is done so well that it can't be mistaken for what is happening in any sense. Dylan's struggles are very real and true, being an out and gay man in sports will always have risks no matter what or when. Nico is like a breath of fresh air when Dylan meets him in the most unexpected way and realizes that he is also gay but doesn't hide it like he does.
This book was one that was very easy to follow and not get lost due to the "situation" that Dylan faces. There was a quite a bit of filler throughout but it just added to the story of these two men and their journey to their happy. Main point that stuck out to me is, acceptance & love. Not only for yourself but what you can accomplish once you embrace who you are and accept it all in no matter what, when or where. There is no holding back once love plays a factor no matter at what point in life you are at.
Declan is a new author to me and it was refreshing to get a story like this. A good emotional read.
This was a bit of a variation from Declan’s usual hockey romances, but it worked well. The story of Dylan and Nico, the connection they had, the timeless love they shared, and the potential impact on the future that was a possibility, all contributed to a choice confronting Dylan. The hockey background and setting was interesting and informative as always to a hockey neophyte, the main characters were realistic and compelling, the premise was interesting, especially Dylan’s constant awareness of the possibility of causing changes in the future while in the past, and the idea of choosing between staying/returning to the past versus present would be an almost impossible choice, if even a possibility. The book caught me up and swept me along as Dylan worked through his time in 1980, never knowing when or if he would be returned to his future, while Nico was struggling to accept the idea that Dylan wasn’t crazy but actually from the future, and could disappear at any time. Deciding to accept what they had while they could allowed the creation of memories which might be needed to sustain them for years. The legacy of the amulet was also an unexpected but fascinating part of the tale, raising more questions begging to be answered. A thought-provoking, entertaining, emotional at times story of a love over space and time. Well worth the 5 stars.
Once upon a time, back when I still read MF books, time-traveling romances were some of my favorites, so I jumped at the chance of reading an MM book with that premise.
Dylan, an up-and-coming hockey star, grappling with the idea of coming out, travels back to the past, 44 years back to be exact, where he finds friendship and more from Nico Santoro, who plays in a minor league hockey team and who hopes to play in the NHL.
While the premise was very intriguing, I found the execution to be a tad lacking. The fact that Dylan found the skates that helped him travel to the past in the arena, instead of some other place, especially when it's supposed to be some kind of family heirloom, didn't sit right with me. Another thing was that while we learn what happens to Nico and his career, Dylan's future is not as clear.
Other than that, I liked Nico and Dylan together, even if their relationship was a bit insta-lovey. The book was enjoyable and even if I needed to suspend my disbelief in some instances, the writing was good and the romance was great, and I have no trouble recommending it.

This book had potential but unfortunately it fell flat for me. Things I struggled with: - I don’t like that sometimes the next paragraph is a completely different day with no indication that there is a break or change of topic. - Some quotation marks were missing throughout the book - Wasn’t really feeling chemistry between the two mc’s till like 80% of the novel - The 80’s guys acted like Dylan died when he left. - 2024 is a lot “better” for gay men than the 80s. Why did they decide to stay in the past? - Didn’t Dylan find these magic skates at the arena’s closet? How is it then a family artifact passed down by generations? - Dylan was one of the best hockey players amongst the guys in the 80s and when he decided to stay I thought he would become famous or do really well with his career. But we don’t really know what happens with his career. Nico’s career was amazing and it mentions him being in the nhl but it never mentions if Dylan made it to the nhl in the 80s timeline.

Dylan, 23 years, loved his hockey game especially when the team wins. He felt a change in the air which led to his life being forever different. Dylan was gay and deep in the closet as a virgin in 2024. A mystery corridor leads him to a space with a magical pair of glowing ice skates that takes him on a journey back in time. Nico, 24, was living his life in 1980 playing with his hockey team that badly needed help at winning. This was a great story told with two characters from different times being together, and then being separated. I loved the ending of this as Dylan fought hard for Nico. Includes both povs for an HEA. I would've loved this to have been written at a slower pace to feel their connection. I had mixed thoughts with the chapters starting in this as they didn't glide into the next character pov smoothly. Otherwise this is a great story for something a little bit different to read.
This was a complete departure from the usual hockey romances I’m used to. Dylan is an NHL player in 2024, used to being in the closet and hiding who he is from the world. An old pair of skates transport him back to 1980, right before the historic Miracle on Ice Olympic Game. There, he meets semi-pro hockey player, Nico and his life really begins to get interesting. There were so many moments in this story that took my breath away, not just because of how sweet they were, but because of the emotional impact of the actual event. Being able to go back and witness historical moments, stepping back and seeing the Twin Towers standing, especially if you were born after they fell. The simple conversation of always using rubbers, knowing that the world was on the verge of AIDS epidemic. It was all just so emotional and wonderfully handled as just blips in the story. The romance was beyond sweet and I loved every second of this story.
3.5⭐️ This was fun. I’ve never read a romance featuring a time traveling hockey player but I absolutely love the idea of it, I enjoy a good “just go with it” story once in a while and this definitely is that, complete with magical glowing time hopping skates. But, it also has two very likable main characters at its core to ground the plot- just a bit. I enjoyed how the change in scenery from 2024 to 1980 had such a profound impact on Dylan. It was pretty lovely seeing him get to know Nico and learn about himself. It was interesting how the 1980s scene was more open and freeing for Dylan and I especially enjoyed his time with his new team. It’s pretty amazing Dylan finds something special playing with his very semi pro team in 1980 that was missing from his big NHL life. I also liked the ending, it was not what I expected but was pretty sweet.

This book has been sitting in my Kindle library for months, and I finally was in the mood to read it. MM hockey romance is one of my favorite niche genres, and combine that with time travel, my favorite scifi trope, and I was sold. At first I couldn’t believe someone had put those two things together in a book, and I was skeptical of how it would work. This turned out to be very cheesy and the plot was definitely Disney Channel — it felt a little juvenile and silly. It was definitely silly. But I didn’t mind it. It requires a significant suspension of disbelief, and a go-with-the-flow attitude to read it. But if you go in with that mindset, it’s a fun romance. I think with more editing and some better writing it could’ve been a fantastic story, because the concept is there. I’d be curious to see what a different author could do with this idea. But I liked this book, and it was an easy read.
I am conflicted on how I feel on this one. I like time travel books and I can suspend most reality while reading, and I know most of the contemporary romance books I read totally suspend reality in many similar ways, but I struggled with how open these two MCs were in upstate NY in 1980.
Maybe because the book generally played true to historic events (Miracle on Ice, AIDS crisis, 9/11, social media, etc.) but every time there was even a minor display of affection in public, or they came out to friends, it gave me anxiety or dread for their well-being. Idk.
That said, I also get fed up with movies that are supposed to be based in the early ‘90s but characters are clad in flattering outfits instead of ill fitting unintentional mom-jeans and things like white turtle necks under hideous sweaters.

This book should have worked. The characters are lovable and the premise is good, I myself wrote a story with this same plot, however it did not live up to its potential. The plot is a bit all over the place, things happen and you’re never really sure how much time is passing. I do love myself a good fast burn romance, but this felta bit too forced and rushed (I mean, Nico knew Dylan was the love of his life the moment he spotted him in the locker room, c'mon!)
I recieved an ARC copy by Gay Romance Reviews and this is my honest opinion.

What I liked most about this book was the role time played in helping Dylan to be more comfortable in his own truth. Dylan is an up and coming professional hockey player in 2024 who is in the closet because he is gay and fears how being out would affect his career. He is transported back to 1980 where he meets Nico and finds himself in a position to be more authentic than he was over 40 years later. How is that for irony? The fact that he finds himself and a lover that he connects to so quickly had me worried that they would be torn apart by his return to his time. That element added suspense, their relationship steam and the author resolved their situation in a way that was satisfying and hopeful. I received an ARC from GRR and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Quite the departure for Declan Rhodes, and very good. Dylan Mercer is transported back in time to just before the legendary "miracle on ice" when the ragtag US hockey team defeated the Soviet Union at the 1980 winter Olympics. There he meets Nico Santoro a hockey player with the Catskills Blizzard Breakers. Dylan joins the team, and Dylan and Nico strike up a friendship. Dylan had always hidden his sexuality, but with Nico's help he is now exploring it. Just as Dylan and Nico settle into planning a future together Dylan is once again hurled through time to return to 2024. If Dylan finds a way to return to 1980, will he remember to buy Microsoft.
Oh man. This story took me back to my teen years when I was a crazy fan of ice hockey. It also gave me flashbacks of when I was in high school and had friends who had to keep the same secret as Dylan.
This author did an incredible job of playing on my emotions. You go from disliking the MC to falling in love with him. You tear up one moment and laugh out loud the next. The fact I could fully engage all my emotions and felt all those feels just means this author wrote a great story. Well done!
Oh, my good goshness! This is a great book! It's intelligent, partly historical, well researched, well thought out, romantic, medium steam, and highly satisfying and enjoyable. It begins angsty, but soon, it's morphed into something beautiful.
The characters are all awesome and the imagery is amazing. Declan Rhodes didn't skimp on the details, and kept enough of it to make the story flow seamlessly. The plot is deftly and perfectly fleshed out. It's an easy and hearty recommend!
OMG I love Dylan and Nico. It was a quick read and the pace was great. They felt the attraction right away and very soon after all the truths came out. It had a lot of feels and there were tears at one point but the HEA on this was just amazing. I love epilogues set way in the future. This fit the bill perfectly. Oh did I mention it’s hot too. As we know there has been many good hockey books out over the past few years, but the time travel really added another fun level I had not read before. I highly recommend this book. Enjoy!
So strangely enough I really do not like sports book themes but I always have to read Declan's books because they are just so well written and always keep me enthralled. Declan has surpassed himself with this book with the time travel element. From how Dylan and Nico meet to their amazing adventures and relationship development it kept me riveted and on tenderhooks wondering whether/when Dylan would be pulled back and how it would end! Highly recommend. I received an arc copy from GRR and this is my honest review.
I enjoy a time travel story and I enjoyed reading Dylan and Nico's story.
I can't imagine suddenly finding myself over 40 years into the past or the future and I thought Dylan handled his sudden arrival in 1980 much better than I would have. I could feel how torn he was as he got to know Nico and the team back in 1980, coming to terms with being there, making real friends for the first time, discovering who he was and the potential life he could have compared to his life back in 2024. Should he stay, or should he go back if that was possible? Being worried about what he could say or tell people that might impact the future but knowing he could potentially help make positive changes for LGBTQ+ people if he stayed. So much to consider and get his head around but his feelings for Nico and Nico's for Dylan were so strong I knew they'd find a way to be together whether in 1980 or 2024. I loved how they seemed to be made for each other.
DNF 20%. Time-travel gay hockey romance?? That's a thing of wet dreams if you ask me. But alas, this just wasn't it. The writing was awkward and hella amateurish. Were beta readers involved at all? The two MCs hadn't even met yet but the one was already referring to the other by his name in his head. Crimeny. Can you at least give your work a cursory read for errors before hitting the publish button? I lost count of the number of times I scoffed at implausible plot points and silly dialogue and then just went ahead and threw in the towel. This wet dream was not meant to be.
I loved Dylan and Nico. Loved how Nico was able to bring Dylan out of his closeted place of fear, and into the joy of love. Weird that someone would have to go back in time to find acceptance.
The relationship between these two was fantastic. The fast pace, mixed with twists and turns, kept you on the edge of your seat wondering if/how they could have a HEA.
LOVED IT.

It’s strange, but you knew that from the description. It was just a little too odd for me - not the implausible parts but the poorly researched history and assumptions about what it was like to be gay at that time. I tried it and even went back later to see if it was my mood at the time, but the characters were just off-putting in a way I can’t really describe. I’m sorry, but just not something I’d recommend.

This is a well written time travel/gay hockey romance with strong characters in Dylan and Nico. The author does a great job developing the story and painting his scenes, taking you back to 1980 perfectly. It's a sweet romance and is an enjoyable read.
