Oh. My. Freaking. God. From the very start of See How They Fall, I knew that I was in for quite the treat of addictive thrills and chills. From the dysfunctional family dynamics to the claustrophobic vibe, this riveting novel was a groundbreaking combo of B.A. Paris and Loreth Anne White. What exactly do I mean? Well, in no uncertain terms, this fast-paced, heart-stopping plot was a mix of an expertly penned police procedural and the perfect mind-f***ery of a cunning domestic thriller. Throw in the rich people behaving badly, and you’ve got this utter slam dunk described to a T. In all honesty, I don’t know if there are enough words to do it justice, but I’ll give it a try.

With edge-of-your-seat tension and plenty of dark secrets, I never knew what to expect around the next blind turn. With two superb female main characters, a sinister feel, and plenty of jaw-dropping reveals, there was no end to the love I had for this novel. After all, the plot was complex, sharp, and emotionally charged in every sense of the word. Thanks in part to the dynamite dual POVs, I was drawn deeply into the unwinding mystery until its stunning, explosive conclusion. And when I say explosive, I really mean it. Unguessable, shocking, and glaringly realistic, Paris absolutely blew me away from the very first word of her utterly brilliant debut novel.

All said and done, I’m seriously on tenterhooks as I await Ms. Paris’s next book. From the stunning use of language that drew pictures in my head to the non-stop suspense that ratcheted more and more with each page, this author is surely the newest star on the thriller scene. I’m not exaggerating when I say that this novel is going to go head to head for my favorite book of the year with some of the biggest writers we all adore. A dark and twisted tale full of shrewd gaslighting, vile cover-ups, and unbridled deceit, you won’t know who to trust until the very last word. Just please go in blind. After all, you don’t want to ruin one single twist in this phenomenal read. Rating of 5+++ stars.

SYNOPSIS NOTE: As I said in my review, I beg of you to skip the synopsis and read this one blind. All you need to know is that after an obscenely wealthy family gathers for Easter at their remote compound, one of their clan will be dead and another fighting for their life. Once the family scatters, a stubborn detective—who has plenty of secrets of her own—arrives on the scene to investigate what could have happened. Thanks to her and one determined family member, secrets and lies are revealed that have been buried for decades. From there it’s 100% out-and-out perfection, so be sure to grab this one as soon as you’re able. After all, this is one family that will keep you glued to the pages…

Thank you to Rachel Paris and Scarlett Suspense for my complimentary copy. All opinions are my own.

More like a family drama, but also a story of strong women who didn’t give up when things got tricky. And the twist was unexpected although there were some unanswered questions and a hurried ending.

If this is a debut, I cant wait to see what Rachel comes up with next. Rachel smashed it out of the ball park ! This book is brilliant from start to finish. I could not stop reading it as I just had to know the ending. That is what I loved most about this book - the ending - I did not see that coming. So many twists and turns the whole way through. Highly recommend !

This book has / is :

* dysfunctional family
* dual pov's - Skye ( Tillys mum) and Mei ( detective)
* backstabbing
* Australian setting
* All about the " who" did it.
* addictive
* secrets

I’ve been on a streak lately of reading really strong debut novels and this is one of them. It’s being touted as Big Little Lies meets Succession and I can def see those comps, it’s a rich and powerful family with shocking secrets and everything unravels after two family members are poisoned during a holiday weekend away. Besides the family you get chapters from a police detective, Mei so there are strong police procedural elements as well. The pacing was fast, the mystery was tricky and complex and the writing was strong. There were so many good reveals and secrets that were exposed and things take a dark turn. The ending was as strong as the rest of it, I really don’t have any complaints, I’ll be following the author closely because this was sharp, clever and cunning. I do want to mention there is a violent death of a pet so keep that in mind, but overall a fantastic thriller that felt fresh!

What an absolutely intense, edge of seat, rollercoaster ride thriller! I found myself holding my breath with every page, through every chapter. Rachel Paris’ debut is a perfectly paced crime thriller, I couldn’t put it down!

From shady filthy rich characters to tough determined detectives fighting for respect, you will be hooked until the epic conclusion!

For Skye it’s just an another long weekend away at her in-laws luxury property north of Sydney. Sadly the patriarch Sir Campbell Turner has recently passed away, and there is the matter of his estate to discussed. His three sons Jamie, Hugo & Duncan (who is Skye’s husband) think this is the perfect private location

When tragedy strikes and one family member is found dead and another is taken to hospital in an extremely critical condition, the Turners are thrown into the spotlight for all the wrong reasons.

Detective Mei O’Connor can see something isn’t right from the beginning, but her boss is keen to close the case and not interested in her theories

The story is told from Skye & Mei’s POV, who are both determined yet battling demons while fighting for their families. You become invested in both equally very quickly.

See How They Fall will absolutely be one of my top thrillers for the year, what an amazing debut! I can’t wait to read Rachel’s next book

Wow! Rachel Paris’ debut thriller had me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. This novel combines the suspense of a crime thriller with the emotional depth of family drama, making it one of my favorite thrillers of 2025.

Set against the backdrop of an affluent Australian family (the Turners), the story revolves around the investigation of a family tragedy that threatens to dismantle a powerful dynasty. The plot is a complex maze of secrets, lies, and manipulations as Detective Mei O’Connor unravels a tangled web of hidden truths.

I really loved Mei O’Connor - our dedicated detective who grapples with a haunting past, faces misogyny in her police department, and deals with an unfaithful fiancé. She’s layered, flawed, and unapologetic. Her determination to trust her instincts, especially when the evidence appears too convenient and everyone wants to close the case, adds a layer of grit to this police procedural.

Paris explores themes of privilege, gaslighting, and emotional manipulation with unsettling precision. I constantly questioned the motives and truths of the Turner family as they attempted to maintain their pristine image. It’s a brilliantly complex tale with dark twists, unexpected turns, and a shocking conclusion—such a wild ride!

Seriously, if you love a story filled with shocking surprises that leave you thinking, “What the?!”, this is a must-read!

This book is a compulsive, edge-of-your-seat, anxiety-inducing psychological thriller that you won’t be able to put down.

What begins as a tense family gathering among the elite quickly spirals into tragedy, leaving one person dead and another little girl fighting for her life. At the heart of it all is a family business steeped in dark secrets, cover-ups, and lies—where women are gaslit at every turn. Meanwhile, a determined detective is on the case, hell-bent on uncovering the truth.

What starts as a straightforward murder investigation soon unravels into something far more sinister. The twists come fast and hard, keeping you guessing at every turn. I especially loved the dual perspectives—Skye, the mother and wife caught in a web of deceit, and Mei, the sharp and relentless detective seeking justice.

This one will keep you hooked until the very last page!

💵See How They Fall is an engaging psychological thriller set amidst luxurious surroundings, featuring a taut narrative and unpredictable events. Rachel Paris has penned an irresistible read that will keep you up until midnight. What a great book to be selected for a Tandem Global readalong!

💵Here’s what you get when opening this Rachel Paris new title. After the shock death of the Turner family patriarch, long-buried conflicts explode when his sons return home and a new heir appears. With themes around power, control, wealth, distribution, marital affairs, tragedy and secrets, this is a rich story. Detective Mei is sent in to investigate the Turners and what she turns over is a cesspool of lies and deceit, which will ultimately bring down the entire Turner empire.

💵This novel grabs you immediately and revelations do not let up. You are tossed into a world of unyielding wealth, sprawling estates, luxury jets and general opulence. Shifting points of view define this tale and I have to admit that it took a moment to settle into. Paris allows us to enter the mindset of leads Mei and Skye. I did appreciate the shift in tone and characters. Each chapter ends with just enough mystery and enticement to keep you desperate to return. I made sure I didn’t rush so I didn’t miss any key developments in the core investigation. I did love that Paris cleverly played with the idea of setting Skye up as a possible unreliable narrator, strengthening the psychological tension.

💵See How They Fall is the kind of thriller that doesn’t allow you any time to catch a break. Every moment tangles the reader in a line of suspicion. Even the less prominent cast members made me suspicious, which is generally what I look for in a good mystery novel,

💵With a big bang style close that you will not be able to predict, See How They Fall is a volatile psychological thriller that delivers an entertaining tale to readers.

Much gratitude passed onto the folks at @tandemcollectiveglobal and @hachetteaus for the readalong opportunity.

This suspenseful debut follows the Turners, a mega-wealthy family with ties to everyone and everything, making them appear untouchable. After a family gathering, one family member is dead, and another is on life support. The case is quickly resolved, but unfortunately for the Turners, police sergeant Mei O’Connor trusts her gut more than she trusts her superiors. She senses there’s more to the case, and with the help of a concerned family member, they uncover far more than they expected.

The story unfolds through alternating perspectives, with each chapter growing more intense. Both main characters carry heavy emotional baggage, driving them to seek out the ugly truth. This was an exciting, edge-of-your-seat read, and I can’t wait to read more from this author!

I was lucky enough to get a copy through our mutual
Publisher. Paris puts her legal experience of badly behaving families into full use - a page turner as the reader vicariously relics around in the playgrounds of the Sydney monied class. Given Succession and everything we’ve heard about the family that inspired it, all too real and you hold your breath until the end. Neo (the cop) and Skye (married into the wealth) are great flawed characters that we route for.

See How They Fall by Rachel Paris is a debut thriller sure to put Paris on your radar of an author to follow. I know I will be!

The Turner empire, the family drama and scandal, and some poisoning - it’s just another day in the lives of the rich. When the patriarch of the family dies, it’ll be a fight for what he’s left behind. But all the cards are all about to fall.

Oh this was a fun one that I devoured in a day! The family drama kicks off in chapter 1 and continues until the very last page. While the chapters were longer than I normally like, they didn’t feel that way. Once you start reading you’ll be so immersed in Paris’ writing that you’ll forget you’re even reading.

I liked how we got to see both sides of the story. The investigation and police side of things was just as compelling as the family drama. I think most are going to enjoy this one.

An Australian who-dunit locked room mystery. A billionaire empire family meets for a vacation. Nina dies of arsenic poisoning and Skye’s daughter, Tilly, fights for her life being poisoned as well. Nina’s husband Jamie runs the company, his brothers Hugo and Skye’s husband Duncan have leadership positions as well. Skye has become a partner husband’s blue blood wealthy elite although she comes from humble beginnings.

This is multi POV and happens over just a week or so. The chapters are between Skye- mother of the poisoned victim and detective Mei. Mei knows that there is more to this case than meets the eye. Skye is trying to determine the cause, pray for her daughter’s recovery, and not become a suspect. Everyone- including Skye- has secrets that will be uncovered over the course of the narrative.

This thriller is fast moving; many reveals and red herrings- this is a new to me publisher and debut author. Mei was a flat character without a lot of background; Skye had a history. It was easy to keep the characters apart despite a large family, many suspects and different directions. Great for fans of Jason Rekulak, Jeneva Rose, and Riley Sager.

Thanks to NetGalley and Scarlet publishing for the ARC. Book to be published March 26, 2025.

See How They Fall by Rachel Paris

AD PR Product [Gifted]: Thank you Hachette Aus, Tandem Collective and Rachel Paris for allowing me to be a part of this readalong and gifting me a copy of See How They Fall for an honest review!

Publication Date: 26th March 2025

Thoughts: See How They Fall is a gripping, fast-paced debut thriller that throws you into the glamorous yet sinister world of Sydney’s ultra-wealthy Turner family. I was hooked from the very first chapter—the suspense had me reading well into the night. Filled with unexpected twists and turns, the story kept me guessing right until the end, which took me completely by surprise. A well-written and compelling thriller that I’d highly recommend to anyone who loves a twisty, edge-of-your-seat read.

Synopsis: Turner Corp, a luxury goods empire, has been rocked by the death of its founder. As his three sons gather at the family’s opulent estate for a long weekend, tensions rise when an illegitimate heir is introduced - and no one could predict the tragedy that follows. Skye, who married into the dynasty, is uneasy in her husband’s world, hiding her own secrets while trying to maintain a normal life for their six-year-old daughter. The weekend quickly morphs into any parent’s worst nightmare, leaving Skye desperate to uncover the truth about the Turner family. Mei, the detective assigned to the case, is pressured by her superiors to close the investigation swiftly. However, as she begins to unpick the complex web of lies and betrayal, she realises that pulling at these threads might just bring down an empire.

Thanks to the publisher for an advance copy .

I hadn't heard of this author before, but I do like a good mystery, and I'm a sucker for stories set in the world of the super rich.

This was a captivating, original read and I literally devoured it in two days (it would have been in one but I had to go to work :(). It's also well-written which I find is rare in this genre.

The story is told by two women in alternating chapters. The first, Skye, is a mum trapped in a toxic relationship - although it takes a traumatic event in the first chapter for her to realise what her husband's family is capable of. The second narrator, Mei, is a cop who is pulled into the story to investigate a shocking death. I won't spoil the plot by saying more but both women are compelling characters who I found I related to in different ways.

There is a #MeToo vibe that runs through he book, but it's also darkly funny in many places. The style reminded me a lot of Gillian Flynn for that reason.

I'd love to see this on the screen as a Netflix series.

I soooo did not see the end of this coming - but in a good way! This story starts off like many others - a rich family (but in Sydney, Australia), an inheritance struggle with Succession vibes, a death, and an investigation. We start in the viewpoint of Skye Turner who is a mom married to one of the Turner brothers, and then switch to the POV of Mei O'Connor who is a female detective who gets called in with the Homicide Squad to investigate. From then on, the chapters alternate between Skye and Mei so we get two versions of what is going on as they hunt for the killer.

I liked the contrast between the characters of Skye and Mei and the way the reader has to piece together what each one knows to try and figure out who is behind the murder and what motivated them. We know it has to be one of the family members so that ups the suspense.

At about the halfway mark there is a huge twist and from there the story gets miles darker with lots of plots twists. I really liked this one. My rating is a 4.5 stars rounded up.

A riveting debut, this tense psychological thriller had me hooked immediately.

It is written from the POV’s of Skye - who attends a family gathering where her sister in law is murdered and her daughter Tilly is poisoned , and Mei - a young female detective simultaneously trying to prove herself at work whilst also caring for her sick Mother with whom she has a strained relationship.

Every family member has secrets of their own and as the story unfolds, the tension builds, keeping you captivated and on the edge of your seat until the very end.

I really love a good thriller and this one is up there with some of the best I have read! I’m excited to read whatever Rachel writes next!

I thank good reading magazine for giving me the opportunity to read and review, the book --- See How They Fall by Rachel Paris.
This story is an unflinchingly tense and gripping psychological thriller which drew me into the dark, manipulative and complex world of the characters. From the very first page the story it took me on a thrilling ride of twists and dark secrets.
What sets this book apart is its multidimensional characters. The story had me guessing and engaged throughout. I felt that the police procedures were a bit lagging.
The author's writing is sharp and evocative, pulling you deeper with every turn of the page. Her ability to weave suspense and create an atmospheric tension is a standout in this book.
A must read for psychological thriller and mystery fans and I loved reading this book, which kept me on the edge of my seat. Rachel Paris has solidified herself as a formidable force in the thriller genre.

See How They Fall by Rachel Paris is an addictive debut novel taking readers into the somewhat warped world of the mega-rich. And we're introduced to those born into it, those who marry into it, and those who suffer the consequences of falling into its orbit.

The events here take place through the eyes of Skye, an artist who married into the Turner family, and Mei O'Connor, a detective whose life has imploded as a result of a cheating boyfriend, forcing her to move in with her judgemental mother who's just been diagnosed with terminal cancer.

The book opens at Easter when the sons of recently-deceased mega-wealthy patriarch - Jamie, Duncan and Hugo Turner - have gathered at a family estate with their respective wives and children.

I notice that the backcover blurb doesn't share what happens here, so I'll only go as far as saying that a day into the long weekend one of the family members is dead and another is in a coma.

Paris takes this to a dark place, but it's nuanced at the same time. Are people all-good or all-bad, or can they be a mix of both? Can a dedicated cop be swayed? Can someone be a wonderful son, father, husband or brother but also be evil, immoral or sadistic? History (and true crime documentaries) would say they can.

This is a great debut and I'd love to see Mei again, but am unsure if Paris views this as a launching point for a series (though there's certainly a bit more to unpack in Mei's past) or an opportunity to lift the curtains on the hidden and morally corrupt world of the super-wealthy.

Read this book at Grace’s insistence and finally got around to reading it this morning so she can take it back to the library.

Very glad she did insist though, it was very good, so good it only took me 3 hours to read in fact. I honestly couldn’t put it down, even though I was ready to throw it across the room at times.

I wasn’t overly fond of the adult characters, but I didn’t mind Skye and Mei. The blatant sexism from the cops and hospital staff etc. pissed me off. I liked how it kept me guessing, although I mostly guessed the twists correctly.

I’ve also been told this is a debut novel which is insane, surely a sign of great things to come.

See How They Fall by Rachel Paris is an exceptionally fast paced crime thriller where all is not what it seems. I was hooked from the start and loved the way it kept me guessing. I can’t believe this is Rachels’ first novel!

The story features a powerfully rich family, it’s absolutely suspenseful and the characters are outstanding.

Everything implodes following a family dinner at the lavish family estate where they have all got together for the long weekend. There’s a family tragedy involving one of the female members and a young child.

Our narrators are Mei the detective on the case and Syke Turner who has married into the wealthy Turner family.

Rachel Paris is an author to watch out for, loved the book!

In this gripping debut thriller set in Sydney’s wealthiest suburbs, a family gathering turns deadly. Skye, trapped in an unhappy marriage to Duncan Turner, hides her own secrets while trying to protect their daughter. After the Turner patriarch dies, his three sons prepare to inherit the family fortune—until a mysterious fourth heir, Cody, appears. As the family convenes at a luxurious seaside retreat to confront the situation, tensions run high, and the night ends in a shocking poisoning. Sergeant Mei O’Connor is called to investigate, but despite pressure to close the case quickly, she senses deeper secrets at play. Juggling her personal struggles, Mei is determined to uncover the truth—risking the downfall of the entire Turner empire.

Thank you to @hachetteaus and @tandemcollectiveglobal for accepting my request to be part of this readalong! The writing made it an entertaining and addictive read. The author did a great job at keeping you guessing as to who was behind the poisoning, the ending surprised me but not in a good way. A lot of the themes were explored at a very superficial level. I think if not every character had a complicated back story then the author could have delved deeper into some of the really important themes. I really enjoyed the alternating view between Skye and Mei, it felt like a race to see who would solve the case first. A lot of the characters were unrelatable due to their status so I did find it frustrating to read at times. Mei’s story was also a bit dull at parts and I was rushing to get through her story. To be honest there was a racist comment in chapter 22 made by a guy in a bar to Mei and it really gave me the ick. I thought it was extremely aggressive and unnecessary. I guess race could partly be why she was treated unfairly at work but they don’t go into that at all. I gathered the main reason for her treatment is that she made some mistakes in the past. Overall a good debut thriller/mystery, I give it a 3/5 stars!

When the patriarch of the wealthy Turner family dies, his three sons are set to inherit the luxury goods empire. After an intimate family gathering, one more family member is dead, and another is fighting for their life, launching an investigation into the incident, spearheaded by Sergeant Mei O’Connor. While her superiors are eager to close the case quickly, Mei feels there is more to the story and this family, and when Skye, the wife of one of the Turner brothers, comes forward, the two hope to reveal the truth behind this family empire.

Wow—this was such a fast-paced and entertaining read! I liked the structure of the book with the alternating perspectives from both the police investigation {via Sergeant Mei O’Connor} and inside the Turner family drama {via Skye}. Both lead characters are flawed and relatable women you immediately find yourself rooting for, and I think their character development was outstanding. Overall, this is a suspenseful thriller and great debut novel—I look forward to the author’s future books!

See How They Fall by Rachel Paris.

If you can't trust family.. who can you trust?

Meet the Turner family: Duncan, Jamie and Hugo. They are the sons of the late Sir Campbell Turner. A multi billionaire who has recently passed away. They all meet up for the weekend at Yallambee to discuss the estate. The weekend turns in to tragedy and unimaginable consequences for the family with one member dying and another in a bad way in hospital.

A very well written Australian debut family thriller full of plot twists, lies and unlikable characters. Told in two points of view from both Skye and Mei. I absolutely loved Detective Mei O'Connor and would love to see her more in the future. Money does not bring happiness and this is exactly the case for this book. I recommend reading this one if you love a good Australian thriller.

Thank you Hachette Australia and Netgalley for a gifted copy of the book for my honest book review.
