Daphne Vance's life is perfect -- she's a beautiful, devoted wife, and her husband has just bought her a vast countryside estate to start their family in.
But when her husband leaves on a business trip, it doesn't feel like she's alone in the mansion -- she can feel eyes watching her, and hot hands trailing up her thighs. The domineering spirit of the mansion's former owner is still present -- and when she discovers her husband cheating on her, she doesn't want to resist the Master anymore....
Hi there! I'm a registered nurse and author. As Cassandra, I wrote the Year of the Nurse: A Covid-19 Pandemic Memoir. As Cassie, I've written numerous (and very hot!) paranormal romances, sometimes with my friend Kara Lockharte. I live in the Bay Area with one husband, two cats, and one million succulents.
Sometimes I will finish a book and ask myself “what the fuck did I just read” in a good way. But times like now, I mean it in the literal, what the fuck way. This was not only…not great, the ending SUCKED. Happy Halloween, fuck me, I guess.
The following ratings are out of 5: Romance: 💚💜💙 Story/Plot: 📕📗📘 Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 Chemistry: 🧪🧪🧪🧪🧪 World building: 🌏🌍🌎 Character development: 😒🤩😍 Narrator(s): 🎙🎙🎙🎙🎙 Narration type: Solo Narration
The heroine:Daphne - she and her husband Richard just moved into a huge mansion in a remote area. Her husband wanted the huge place, but Daphne wasn’t sure what she wanted. When Richard had to leave right away on one of his many trips overseas where the bank he worked for sent him, Daphne was left to unpack and set up the house with only a few day servants for company. She wanted a baby to keep her company, but they had been trying for a while, and she still wasn’t pregnant.
The Hero:Ghost Lover - he is inside the mansion from day one. Touching Daphne, and she could feel him like he was really there. He is dominant, kinky and he gets the lonely woman to go along with everything he wants to do to her. I must admit that I wasn’t sure who or what the ghost lover was, I kept going back and forth thinking it was one of two people and/or things.
The Story: Daphne is quite lonely, and the ghost turns her on and keeps her company when there is nobody else. She likes everything he does to her and how he makes her feel. She feels even more for her ghost after finding out her husband has been cheating on her. She wants her ghost lover, but she also wants a baby, and she knows that a ghost can’t get her pregnant. She also knows that if she divorces Richard, he will sell the house, and she would lose her ghost. So, she stays with Richard in hopes of getting pregnant and being able to stay in the house that she has come to love.
This was a super steamy book, downright smutty actually. Though if you are in the mood for that kind of a story, this was a perfect one for that. The fact that Daphne was cheating on her husband bothered me at first, but since he had cheated first it didn’t bother me so much. What bothered me more was that she slept with Richard more than once which was kind of cheating on her ghost even if he knew about it all along. I just don’t like such messy situations, I guess. I did like the ghost lover angle, with the addition of BDSM and kinky situations, it was pretty hot. Though I did get tired of the smut, it was just one scene after another without much story in between, and I wanted to find out what happened.
The setup wild and fascinating. This story dove headfirst into the gothic and supernatural while mixing in some very modern emotional tangles. It’s not every day you get a love triangle between a woman, her husband, and a ghostly dom. Though, like I said, when the steamy scenes drown out the story, even a spicy premise loses impact. The tension of Daphne’s emotional loneliness, her ambiguous morality, and the house-bound stakes had the bones of something psychologically rich. I think if the scenes had been more balanced with plot, maybe building up the ghost’s backstory or Daphne’s emotional arc, it would have felt more satisfying.
Also, the idea of staying in a toxic marriage just to keep access to a haunted lover is such a deliciously twisted motivation. There’s a ton of potential for deeper conflict there. Only some of that was included. Though there wasn’t enough story for me, I was kind of liking it until about an hour before it ended and that was where it just went to a place I didn’t like at all and turned into different kind of book altogether.
This audiobook was narrated from Daphne’s perspectives, done in solo narration by Cassandra Metcalf. She has a great voice and does a fantastic job. I usually don’t like solo narration, though with this one, I don’t know how it could be done differently. The ghost didn’t have a point of view and didn’t even speak, so it really makes sense for this one to be in solo narration.
Oh my goodness, You don't understand how frickin "AMAZING" this book is.... The moment I started reading, I couldn't put down... I love that this was set in a haunted mansion. I really loved this story. This book has everything I love - Bdsm, Dark Erotica, Horror, and haunted by a sexy ghost. If you love paranormal romance (Ghost) I highly recommend!
Wow what a trip that was. This story was well written, unique and smoking hot. There was a lot of sex and in many forms, including some with a less than formed being.
To start with I struggled with the idea of a ghost being able to have sex with a living being, but then just went with it. There were numerous smoking hot sex scenes between the main character Daphne and the ghost, haunting her new home. Most scenes took place while her husband was away, not sure if ghost sex counts as cheating? One scene involved bondage and another a caning. I had to smile as I tried to imagine a cane whipping through the air, seemingly of it's own accord.
Moving on, hubby arrives home and we are treated to a MFM ménage scene, although the husband is blissfully unaware.
There is a whole lot more going on in this story, but I am not going to go further into it as that require me to reveal the plot. All I can say is this story kept me glued from start to finish. Go get a copy NOW!!
I received a copy of this story, from the author, in exchange for an honest review.
Cassie was a new to me author. I am so pleased she offered her book for review in the BDSM group. I now look forward to reading more of her work and getting my hands on a copy of The Hunted
I have difficulties writing this review… why? As I really like the concept of falling for a ghost, but what I don’t like and absolutely hate is having multiple partners and cheating. And I got it all in this book. I’m not happy. I’m actually frustrated, as this could have been such a great story worth mass printing by Avon.
If I wrote this… I’d either have a heroine kill herself to be with the ghost or complete the ritual.
But all the cheating (her one at least) would not happen. She would realise what a prick Richard is and definitely would not screw Luke or Becca. That was fucked up. And I think I’m allowed to curse as I don’t think anyone under 18 is going to read this review 😂
This was some fucked up shit. Hot but fucked up. Also hot until I reached my limit of fuckedness. Fuckidity? Fuckery? You know what I mean. Yes, I had to skip a few pages.
I received this book in exchange for an honest review:
Review in two parts. The first part will be visible to all, an overall review of all the things I loved about the book. The second contains spoilers and I am going to try using the HTML code, as it contains the only complaints I have and requires knowledge of the story itself.
How much did I love this book? It was, from the start, one of the best I have read for the R2R TPE Bar I have done. Ms Alexander set a bar which only one other author who ever offered books has met, so that should give you some idea of how much I enjoyed it.
We have a relatively small cast of characters. Really, unless you count people who pop up for three or fewer chapters, we have perhaps six characters. We have total unity of location, with only one brief scene taking place off the premises of the house and property.
The book has a strong American Horror Story season 1 vibe going on (the spoilers in part 2 of the review will explain this better). The central action of the story involves a ghost and his relationship with the newest residents of a manor house/estate.
A general thought though is that I felt the author took the book to its ending far too quickly. With some minor tweaks, I sincerely thought this book could have been a series to rival sales of 50 Shades, except perhaps that Ms. Alexander writes far better and creates deeper characters.... I loved it that much.
My only negatives come next, and they ARE spoilers, so if the HTML does not work, you may want to stop reading here unless you do not mind knowing key aspects.
However, I stand by 5 stars because my personal tastes do not detract from what is a truly enjoyable book. While most erotica is really "one-handed fiction," Ms. Alexander put a great deal of depth into this story and I cannot wait for The Hunted.
You know that episode of South Park where the internet goes out, and Randy claims that he, the computer, the ceiling, etc are covered in “ectoplasm from a spooky ghost” when he’s actually just creamed his jeans--that is this book. Except it’s also a ghost.
Looming over a fireplace set into the wall was a portrait almost as tall as she was. A handsome yet very stern man stared down, in riding breeches and knee high boots, holding a short crop in one hand and a snifter of brandy in the other. “Who is that? She finally asked. Arthur looked up. “The Master, in his prime.”
Content warning: attempted rape, cheating--so much cheating
Rough Ghost Lover, *nervously typing* originally published under the much more palatable designation, The Haunted is an erotic story about a lonely housewife getting a um, helping hand with the erm, chores around the house from the long deceased Master while her husband is “away on business.” *makes air quotes twelve times*
“He…died here? Not in a hospital or anything?” Arthur’s lips drew into a thin line. “The Master always was one to face life on his own terms. Death was no exception.”
Let’s not beat around the bush--the book’ll do enough of that hehe--this is straight up erotica about a sexy lil lady getting nailed so creatively that you’ll feel like there’s going to be a test later and should take notes. It makes that scene from Team America where the puppets are boinking their brains out look like child's play.
It’s hot, it’s nonsense, it’s escapist, it's a problem. IDC, delete my Kindle history when I die.
My thanks to Caskara Press and BookSirens for the free copy! All opinions expressed are my own.
Ever read something then immediately think “wtf did I just read?” It happens to me, albeit not very often, but it does.
And it did with this novel.
Read that synopsis up there? Yeah that’s a lie. Daphne’s life isn’t perfect. We can see from page one she isn’t happy with her marriage or the changes happening in her life. Daphne is also, to put it mildly, an idiot. The author attempts to make this forgivable by using lame plot devices such as Daphne being “sheltered,” but put simply Daphne either doesn’t have a brain or doesn’t know how to use.
Which makes it all that more confusing when she “discovers” her husband cheating on her. I must have missed something because these “clues” that lead her to believe her husband is cheating don’t exist. Just another weak plot device the author uses to further the story that makes zero sense.
The sex scenes were hot at first, but there is only so many times you can read about someone getting molested by invisible hands that “set their skin on fire” before it gets old. And then comes the ménage a trois (or was it technically a foursome?) and the possession and all of sudden it’s gone from erotic to horror in the span of a few paragraphs. It was enough to get the reader whiplash.
I downloaded this novel because of how attractive the man on the cover is and because the synopsis genuinely sounded interesting. Oh pretty covers, how you fool me once again…
I did not understand the story much. Who was the Master? What does he want? What did he want with Daphne? Sex? Relationship? I didn't understand Daphne and the ghost. Daphne finds out her husband is cheating and decides to give herself to the ghost. Is that normal behavior for the character? She also has sex with the Gardner Jason. It seems like she became a nymphomaniac and I didn't understand if it was because of the house/ ghost or she was desperate for a baby. There are so many unanswered questions that could have helped me understand the story more and the characters. There was no back story and frankly Daphne was grating on my nerves with her meekness until the end.
I hardly maybe never give out 1 star reviews but I just couldn't let this have more there was so much missing. Maybe if the author cleaned up the story I would reconsider.
Okay, after just finishing this book I feel like I rode the most epic rollercoaster.
My mind is all ..
Where to start ... where to start indeed...
Daphne and Richard buy a most beautiful estate. However, Daphne is left to her own devices for much of the first part of this novel as Richard's career and "extra-curriculars" take him elsewhere. She explores her new, beautiful piece of history but notices that something, or rather someone has invested an interest in her.
My first thoughts about this aspect of the book set me back a bit. I'll admit I didn't want to go any further for the sheer thought of a ghost doing the deed with her but since I've never read anything quite like it I ran with it. And man am I happy I did. The scenes were HOT aside from the one time use of the word crotch . But that's a personal dislike of the word.
There's sex with a ghost, a yummy gardener, and even her husband and his extra curricular. The book just oozes sex okay?
The reason for 4 out of 5 stars is simply that the storyline moved a bit quick for my taste. I wish there was a bit more to it. While I was reading I couldn't keep track because it was that nuts. The gif sums it up perfectly.
As for Ms. Alexander? She's got the ability to keep you hooked and truly feel the raw emotions that our Daphne felt. I look forward to reading more of this series and her work.
*This book was kindly provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.*
I have read Cassie Alexanders «Edie Spence”-series. I saw that this book was marked “bdsm” and “erotica” on some shelves. I did not expect it to be ffm/dp/all the other porn expressions I don’t know. The step from Edie to “Miss 3 people a day” was a long one! So I guess I didn’t expect THIS. But I guess from the shelves people have put it on, I should.
The book is ok, with some drama, murders, crazy Christian Grey dead version dude, ffm/dp/whatnot. I feel the ending was a bit rushed. And she didn’t really seem shocked enough when she first realized she got toutched/molested by a horny ghost. I would have questioned my own sanity a bit more than what Miss DP did. Also she didn’t really seem that sad that 3 out of 3 lovers she had in a day ended up dead. (OK, one was already dead. Maybe it didn’t count) What’s the next book? “Richards stiffy”?
I guess I ended up missing the humor from the Edie Spence books. At the same time I think it’s cool that an author can write more than one genre.

3.5 I'm...I'm speechless 😶... I was so into this, the first 50% was just perfection everything I could want from a book...but the rest kind of lost me not gonna lie, the end was very, I don't know it just left me speechless, I don't even know if I liked it or not.
But let's talk about the first 50% it was perfection, the moments they shared together were everything, so the "moments" were perfectly written, honestly can't complain about it. It was really good, my only thing with the book was definitely the last 40% that took a turn I didn't enjoy all that much but again that's my opinion and personal preference.
Some readers would definitely love it, but the sudden dark twist didn't do it for me, maybe if we saw the masters dark side before, the end would have felt more right to me. It just felt like he was being gentle and sweet and out of nowhere that shifted, so in my opinion if that was done more slowly I would have given it 5 stars. Thank you so much for the author for letting me read a ARC of this book.
This book was interesting, a bit different but all an all I enjoyed it. Very sexual, not for younger peeps. It's a quick read and there are three books to read. I'm going to start the next one now. Curious where it goes from here.
I struggle with this one, because it is a good book, but it’s like reading erotica instead of a fully fleshed out story. Every two pages is another sex scene, and if that’s what your reading for, Do you Boo! But if you think you are getting a story that has substance, and mystery and well developed characters, you will be disappointed.
I would love to see this book filled out more with a full story, tell us about the previous families, let us explore the house with all the history with Daphne, let us be there with her when she uncovers all these clues, and puzzle pieces to put together. What happened to all the other families? What was it that allowed Master to do the things he did, especially where Richard was concerned. There are so many wonderful avenues for exploration and adventure within this story, and if Ms Alexander rewrote this book to include those other aspects I would rate this a 5⭐️ Book, but as it is there’s just not much more than sex and sadness for Daphne.
I also felt like there was a sudden change in Daphne, not because of being at the house, I mean her going from wanting Master, to being truly afraid of him happened too quickly IMO, without real explanation as to why.
As it is, I feel a bit dissatisfied because this had So. Much. Potential. Instead it’s just porn with a bit of story along the way. ☹️
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
First thing, this is a good book to read in one sitting, I read the first half at once, but then I stopped because I'm not a fan of a book lasting only one day, so I stopped and I wish I didn't... Picking it up again was not easy, I lost the flow pausing it... so if you're gonna read it, do it in once sitting if you can Another thing I realized is that while I came here for the MMF and FFM tags, I really want to read more about actual polyamory than just threesomes... luckily the book does get a little bit there, it's just later into the story, but I liked how it was done and the potential of it... But this was a really good read to fly through and to bring an end to the spooky season, and for anyone who likes horror and mystery and just being deeply uncomfortable and uncertain, this is a great read for that, and of course including the sexual/erotica component of the story
(I received this book through BookSirens in exchange of a honest review :) )
This is a well written ghost story with strong characters and an intriguing story line. The author does a terrific job building the story and pulled me in with her detailed and descriptive writing as she creates the perfect atmosphere for her scenes. She definitely brings the heat in this short erotic ghost story. Loved and recommend this book.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book. All opinions in this review are my own and freely given.
Saw a lot online about this crazy book and decided to experience it for myself. I don’t know what the fuck I just read. But I’m not mad. 🤷♀️💀 This book is definitely not for most. 4 out of 5 👻🌶️s
I quibbled with myself for a little while before I came up with an appropriate rating for The Haunted by Cassie Alexander. Some people aren’t going to like it. It is a niche of dark fantasy erotica that isn’t going to appeal to everyone. It is dark, sexy, terrifying, and at times very graphic. If those things don’t appeal to you, you’re probably going to want to pass this one up.
The story was incredibly steamy, a bit taboo at times, and not always easy to understand. The main character, Daphne, makes a lot of questionable decisions as to her safety and her own happiness. She gives in to a very dark temptation, and it takes her on a lustful journey with an unseen force – and she isn’t always sure what its motives are. Sometimes the ghost that haunts her seems tender and kind. Sometimes it is jealous and possessive. Sometimes it is downright murderous.
All of that aside, and personal tastes aside, the book is well written. The characters show a sense of depth, the author is good at writing in tension, and the book doesn’t hand-hold the reader. The ending is dark and terrifying, but also appropriate to the story – and one of the reasons this book didn’t stray too far into the ridiculous side of erotica. I think the author did a really good job on the story.
As I said, this book isn’t going to be for everyone – but if you’re looking for a dark take on a paranormal erotic story, this is a good one. Just don’t say I didn’t warn you.
I can't remember how I acquired this book, but I think it was from a group here for an event I participated in. The book was lost in the black hole that is my Kindle until this summer when I looked up the description and thought, "What the hell, I haven't read any ghost-y erotica before." So, there's a good chance some of my issues have been corrected because I did have an old copy of this book.
So, there's a young, desperate housewife, all alone in her gigantic new home, while her husband is away on business. All the time. What's she going to do to occupy her time and relax? Well, let the resident ghost (known only as "The Master") have his way with her, of course!
I do have some complaints, but I actually kind of liked this. I probably wouldn't recommend it to many people, but I don't regret reading it and it was a (mostly) fun, quick read.
Despite the amusing/interesting premise of this book, I didn’t love it. Maybe because my copy is so old, it’s since been updated and edited, but my copy needed a bit of work. There were some errors, maybe some typos, and a lot of sentences that just didn’t make a lot of sense without reading them multiple times (and some that never made sense). I found misused words a few times, too.
There were things that weren't explained (I'm ok with minor things, but not something really important for the plot). And there were things that...just...didn't make sense.
I didn't like the characters. At all. I can deal with unlikable characters, but I wanted to hop into the book and kill these characters.
I really liked this book. I haven't read many erotic ghost stories. It was interesting to watch
I think the plunge into the accepting of the paranormal was handled well.
I have to admit my wants for this story kept changing.
One minute I was glad she had a plan to I love that I was always changing my mind, about the direction I wanted things to go. It was fast paced. It made for a very exciting read. I was always looking for what was next. I am glad that the ending was such a surprise.
To me I would describe this book at is core as a ghost story with BDSM erotica twists. I wasn't expecting the direction the story took or the way Daphne herself changed over the course of the story.
This is an amazing, extremely hot read. Easily a five-star rating,
1. Beautifully written. It has the universal, timeless quality of many classic ghost stories.
2. Great plot. The main story is as strong and as interesting as the erotic aspects. Many erotic novels are sex scenes strung together with a thin storyline. This is a proper book. It's even scary at times!
3. So much sex - and so much variety - and it's never too much or too long. Best of all, the sex a crucial part of the plot and the character development.
What really blew me away though was how sexy the author managed to make it when the heroine, Daphne, could never see the ghost nor hear him. Despite this (perhaps because of this?) the sex is mind-blowing: it's all about touch and feel. Their relationship also manages to develop despite the lack of anything but touch-based communication. That is some feat of writing to pull off!
I received a copy of this story from the author in exchange for an honest review. I highly recommend it to both fans of erotic romance and fans of supernatural and ghost stories. It's just a truly great read, and a book you'll likely read more than once.
This book is HOT HOT HOT! Cassie Alexander has become one of those authors that when I want a Paranormal fix I go to. I love Cassie's voice and the world she carates. So when I saw that she released a Paranormal Erotica book. I was sold! I must admit I don't read that much erotica books but I absolutely loved this book. There was A LOT of steamy and HOT scenes in this book. It's a book that is hard to read in one sitting. The premise of a ghost as a lover seemed very intimate in a way. Made this a little different for me.
The story beteween Daphne and her husband was kind of sad. How they kind of used each other for different reasons. I guess that is what made it feel okay for Daphne having an affair.
The only negative thing about this book is I wish it was longer.
I'm curious to see what Cassie has in store for this series (please no sleeping with zombies). ;)
