Technomancer Catherine Sharp has an extensive resume. Rewiring celebrity panic rooms. Doing IT work for the best casinos in Las Vegas. Completing server repair. But nowhere in her job description does it say she’ll be investigating grisly murders. However, a girl is dead, and the gods are calling for the head of her killer. And the deity who owns Cat’s soul has demanded that she lead the hunt.
Adding to the fun, a team of ruthless mages is scouring Sin City searching for a magical veil that they think Cat possesses. By hook or by crook, they will get the relic, no matter how many bodies they must leave in their wake. One little problem, though…Cat doesn’t know what or where the veil is.
With two mysteries to solve, and the gods growing impatient, Cat knows she has little time to piece together the flimsy clues. Now, she must enlist the help of her best friend and his new girlfriend, put her trust in one who has betrayed her, and wade through some murky family secrets, before she winds up worm food herself…
Place your bets, for the truth is about to be unveiled.
After a misspent adulthood pursuing a Music Education degree, JAMIE WYMAN fostered several interests before discovering that being an author means never having to get out of pajamas. (However, she can eat/spin fire, tell you a lot about auditioning to be a Blue Man, and read/write in Circular Gallifreyan.) Jamie also works as an editor. In addition to freelance work, she works with sci-fi/fantasy publisher Dragon Moon Press. As an author, Jamie’s favorite playgrounds are urban fantasy, horror and creepy carnival settings. When she’s not traipsing about with her imaginary friends, she lives in Phoenix with two hobbits and two cats. She is proud to say she has a deeply disturbed following at her blog.
Jamie's debut novel WILD CARD (Entangled Edge, 2013) is available wherever ebooks are sold. You can also find her short story "The Clever One" in the anthology WHEN THE HERO COMES HOME 2 (Dragon Moon Press, August '13). 2014 will see her work in the Sherlock Holmes-inspired anthology TWO-HUNDRED AND TWENTY-ONE BAKER STREETS (Abbadon Books), and the release of a follow up to WILD CARD, UNVEILED.
One day, a few moons ago, I asked my Facebook friends, if anyone could suggest a new book for me to read. Now, I've got a ton of books on my 'to be read' pile. However, I wasn't in the mood for any of them. One friend spoke up and suggested this book by an author I'd not heard of. She happened to be a friend of hers so I thought, why not? That book was Wild Card by Jamie Wyman. I sucked that book up in no time. I was hooked right from the start. Immediately afterward, I began querying about the follow-up. I wanted more. Sadly, the second book was in jeopardy. So, the author began a Kickstarter to fund the cost of having the second book published. I jumped at the opportunity to help fund it. And I followed each and every update like crumbs to a starving mouse. Until, last week, I finally got my hands on the finished product. From beautiful cover image, to being plunged right into the story from the very first line, I was engrossed. I read as much as I could, little bits at a time to start with. (I work retail and it was BLACK FRIDAY week. Ugh.) And finally, yesterday I was able to really sit down and immerse myself in it. And immersed is what I was. The story is fun, the characters are people you love to root for, or love to see have the crap kicked out of them, which is also a good thing. The story is cohesive and the reveals are done so well that I didn't have them guessed already. I love that the main character, Cat, isn't already an expert. I like floundering and learning, and being awed and broken right along with her. The supporting cast is interesting and entertaining enough that they support without overshadowing, and the setting lends itself very well to the story line. The pace was fast, go, go, go right out of the gate. And, I love that there aren't cliched Hollywood endings where the boy gets the girl and everyone lives happily ever after.
And to answer the authors question at the end; Hell yeah I wanna go again!
Dresden-worthy urban fantasy murder mystery with her own uniquely compelling and awesome characters. Some things I managed to guess, and others I was completely blindsided by despite the carefully planted clues.
This was a book I wanted to read so much I backed it on Kickstarter, so to say I was looking forward to it is a little bit of an understatement. The problem with high expectations is that there is always a chance that they will not be met.
Well not with Unveiled. I flipping well loved it.
Cat is a great heroine, she isn't the strongest or the most badass but she gives her all and I cannot help but be on her side. She gives me all the feels in a good way.
Loki, I cannot resist the trickster in any of his incarnations. His relationship with Cat has to be more than just her boss as an agent of chaos he clearly has plans for her so he comes across almost fatherly, if you count fatherly as putting her right in the action to sink or swim.
Flynn, I wasn't sure what to make of him in the first novel, but he's fleshed out more in this one and I now adore this character and want one of my own, you know for reasons.
Marius is back and is causing trouble all over the place. Again he gives me feels because at the moment he is somewhat trapped. Such a knotty character and capable of really crappy behaviour. He broke my heart a little bit.
I loved Karma even despite the name because she was another badass techno mage, I'd really like to see her back in the series.
This novel felt much more accomplished than Wild Card, the stakes were higher and Cat had to become rather more than she was expecting. The pick and mix of pantheons and mythologies that get sloshed around make for vibrant narratives and Jamie Wyman isn't afraid to play.
Go read Wild Card and then come back and read Unveiled they are tremendous fun.
One hell of a sequel! Jamie Wyman brings back everything I loved about the first book and then punches it up about 12 more notches. The characters get more badass, the lines are snarkier, and the powers are even more awesome. I love this series and I can't wait to see more.
So the premise of this second book is that now Cat's soul is Loki's possession. And since he owns her soul, she pretty much has to do whatever he tells her to do. Even if that means investigating a mysterious murder with blinders on. And the more Cat finds out, the more she wishes she didn't know. Muses, angels, demons, mages and more abound in this book. Marius even comes back to make Cat's life that much more complicated. What could possibly make this any worse? Oh, yeah. How about making a life-long atheist challenge her whole belief system? This book gives you everything you could want in a paranormal, urban fantasy.
After being captivated by the start of Cat Sharp's story in 'Wild Card', I had pretty high expectations for 'Unveiled'... and it delivered! Expect to find Cat in even deeper trouble with powerful mages, trickster gods and other immortal creatures. 'Unveiled' throws new challenges Cat's way, sees her developing as a character and in skills as a technomage, and provides more than a few surprises. I really hope we get another book!
Wow, did Jamie Wyman ever ramp up the action and the stakes for Cat Sharp in this one! I read the book in three big gulps because there was never a place to stop.
If you're at all interested in the idea of gods and monsters slouching around in Vegas, badass technomancy, or snark, do yourself an enormous favor and read this book. Well, first, read its predecessor WILD CARD. But then also read this book.
Catherine Sharp is a Technomancer who has been handed from one god to another and Loki wants her to investigate a murder. She has to fight Mages along with some friends she picked up along the way but some of them aren't what they seem. When secrets are revealed it may put Cat in deeper danger. Hopefully she will find out the answer to everything before she isn't around to solve this murder.
Another fun romp in Cat Sharp's urban fantasy world. Unlike so much fantasy that draws on various world pantheons and legends while conspicously omitting the Judeo-Christian mythos, Wyman makes good use of angels and demons among her trickster gods and Classical Greek figures. There are also some clever twists, and her characters have a lot of heart. I'm eagerly awaiting the next installment.
I can't believe that Flynn [spoiler redacted]. I mean, it makes sense, but mind BLOWN! And then when Marius [spoiler redacted]?? INCREDIBLE!! Karma had to be my favourite side character. I'm a little disappointed that she [spoiler redacted], but I can't really blame her.
This is another fantastic book, and I can't wait to read the rest of the series as they come out.
Cat and her compatriots manage to navigate through some seriously complex issues with amazing grace, despite not looking very much like it. I am a constant lover of Ms. Wyman's writing, and have yet to dislike any of her work.
I love the amazing descriptive writing of this book. The flow of power and the dark or beauty is described so well you can feel it in your soul. The plot was fantastic and oh my, the end, twists galore. Brilliant
