The land is dying. The world is enslaved. At the king's command, Kaitee and her people work day and night destroying poisonous berry bushes around her village, keeping one eye constantly on the skies, fearing the return of the horrible winged terror known as The Shadow.

When the monstrous bird returns one day, Kaitee's little brother is taken, and the young girl must embark upon a life-changing journey to rescue him.

Along the way, she meets an odd assortment of companions who teach her valuable lessons about life, love, loyalty, and leadership--lessons she will desperately need. For she discovers that in order to save her little brother, she must first save the entire world.

It's 12:40 in the morning and I lie in my hotel bed in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. I just finished your book, The Shadow.

What a book! I am a man who doesn't read books. I mean I start them, and don't finish them. I've probably read four books since we finished college. Music has always been my escape, my source for story and spiritual growth and healing. I enjoy reading, but have always preferred listening. The clearest path to my heart and soul lies not in my eyes, but through my ears.

But I could not wait to get back from my adventures in Mexico and dive into your book, Kevin. This book - this world - these characters have delivered hope to a man who had almost run out of it. On the verge of destroying my world, and in turn, myself, Kaitee, Nitsmy, Woogar and Danworthy have reminded me how vitally important it is for me to remain true and to always be myself, regardless of outside forces trying to mold me to their expectation of what I should be. It hasn't been easy and I almost gave up, but you, Kevin R. Ranville, the bravest author in the land have gently grabbed me by the shoulders and pointed me back in the right direction.

You should be proud of this book. This story is so important, because it forces the reader to dig deep and question their own resolve. I wondered if I would have had the courage to undertake a journey with such long odds. I wondered if I would hold out hope in the darkest of corners, or in the face of bitter winds and most certain death. I wonder no more.

To you reading this message - go buy this book. Read it. Gift it. And share your experience here. This story needs to be told. Our world also needs a hero to save it.

Will it be you?

Kevin R. Ranville The ShadowFull of adventure and a colourful cast of characters (including talking beasts and terrifying monsters), The Shadow is sure to please readers of all ages! Its quick pace and smoothly-flowing writing style draw the reader in, eager to see how Kaitee and company overcome the many challenges they face along their way. Reminiscent of the Chronicles of Narnia, this tale of good versus evil teaches the reader a number of life lessons without being heavy-handed. Much of the the symbolism and imagery is inspired by First Nations peoples, making this book a particularly special and valuable read for Canadians. The book is appropriate and enjoyable for all ages (it contains minimal violence, none of which is graphic), though I personally would have enjoyed it best around age 8-10. A very fun read!

A very well-written story that held my interest and imagination right from the start. I particularly enjoyed the chapter endings. I just had to know what happens next as it drew me further and further into Kaitee's adventure. No author has held me this captivated since Stephen King. A very uplifting and positive story that anyone can enjoy. We can all apply the lessons and meaning in this story to our own daily lives. How we, as human beings should treat and respect each other and our land. I highly recommend “The Shadow” by Kevin R. Ranville.

I love this book. Based on the Seven Sacred Teachings in Canadian Indigenous culture, it is has echoes of Tolkien without being heavy handed. It is a fun, enjoyable read and I am anxious for the next installment.
Cannot recommend this too highly.

This book was excellent! It has a beautiful story with a strong environmental message and themes of world peace and empathy for all. Before I had even finished reading it, I was recommending it to several people. I found it very entertaining and well written. It was truly inspirational and is enjoyable and understandable for people of all ages.
I liked it and its morals and teachings sooo much, that I started reading it to my children and grandchildren. They wanted me to keep reading, even if we had been reading it for hours. It made my grandchildren want to start writing their own stories, which we did and they also started drawing pictures of character from the book as we continued with Kaitee on her journey.
There were parts that were incredibly touching, like Kaitee's love for her family and the forest around her, and how our actions can affect the world around us. It made me feel like crying at some points. We truly loved the characters and all their little nuances and personalities. Some of them made us laugh so much but most of all it makes you believe that anything can be accomplished through perseverance and tenacity, that if you set your heart and mind to doing something that you truly believe in, great things can be achieved.
My family and I are waiting impatiently for the next book to come out. That's how involved we became with these characters!
The book can reach people in all stages of their lives and I believe that anyone who reads it, when done, will feel the same sense of exhilaration, and will have a better understanding of how their own actions can affect not only them but those around them. For example, when we were out for a walk, my grandkids always used to pick flowers to give to me, but after reading "The Shadow", they decided to just take pictures instead. They didn't want to hurt the flowers. I thought that was beautiful and touching.
Just to be fair, I tried to think of something I did not like about this book and I could not come up with anything, except that, I am waiting impatiently for the next journey that Kaitee takes. I highly recommend this book to everyone because I believe that everyone who reads it will find it a great story and will not be able to put it down until the very end!
