Re-read Nov 2015 in my quest to find the Christmas spirit of the non alcoholic variety...
2014 Christmas story Set in 1994, with a very young Riley getting to grips as to how things work at the Ranch, and Flynn not enjoying the Christmas trip to the mall.....
Somehow I always fall back on rereading the Christmas short stories whenever I edge towards FCR territory. They are simply too comforting, and of course there's the annual shopping trip... A tradition that started at Riley's first Christmas at the ranch.
Keeper's Yard (haven't read this one yet; it's Paul's arrival at the ranch, which is before any of the other main four are there yet)
Paget Creek (work in progress that's not linked on GR; find online at the writers' forum -- this is the very beginning of Flynn's and Jasper's time on the ranch and early interactions with Paul, and I would recommend reading it before The Landing Strip)
My reading order preference is chronologically from Book 1 through the main fivesomes sequels, then circling back to the prequels, then pulling in Jake and Tom's stories
Short, sweet story exploring Riley's first Christmas at the ranch.
I don't think I'll ever get tired of these characters. It's interesting to see Riley struggling with the idea of domestic discipline, as he is so integral to helping Dale understand the dynamic in the main books. It's always fascinating to see just how much characters have changed over their lives.
It's also great to see Paul, Flynn, and Jasper's early relationship from the point of view of Riley, who is currently on the outside but who will eventually belong to them. It's interesting to see him trying to work out their relationship but not quite getting it. Bless him.
More Young!Riley! Love the Riley part, did not quite like the whole Flynn just hates shopping, we know. I just don't like how negative and childish he's acting when, being such smart guy who wanted to get out of his sheep station so badly, this feels like a weird turnabout.
