In Benjamin's Crossing, Jay Parini tracks Benjamin through his last, terrible months. The story opens with his desperate flight from Paris, on the heels of the Nazi invasion in 1940. Yazar Jay Panini kitabının her ne kadar kurmaca olduğunu belirtiyorsa da yer ve olayların büyük bir kısmının, kişilerin, mektup ve belgelerin ise tümünün gerçek olduğunu da vurguluyor, bu nedenle gerçeğe yakın bir roman okuduğumu kabul ediyorum. 1940’da Nazilerin Fransa’yı işgal ederek Paris’e yaklaşması üzerine oradan ayrılan, hasta, parasız ve yorgun Walter Benjamin yanına el yazmalarını da alır. Bu zor ve umutsuz yolculuğu İspanya’daki Port-bou’da bir pansiyonda intiharıyla sonlanır. Bu hazinli serüvenin hikayesidir “Karşılaşmalar”.
Romanda bir kuzeni Hannah Arendt, entelektüel yahudi arkadaşı Gershom G. Scholem, Bertold Brecht, Adorno gibi isimlerle yolunun kesiştiği anların anıları ilginç. Pansiyonun sahibi Franco sempatizanı Madam Ruiz’in tanıklığı da inandırıcılığı sorgulansa da romanı zenginleştiriyor. Kitapta önemli bir yer tutan ve Benjamin’in kötü sonu için suçluluk duygusu hisseden anti-Marksist ve Yahudi mistisizmine gönül vermiş G. Scholem’in söylediği bir cümle çok etkileyici ; “Benjamin’in ölmüş olması benim kabahatim değildi. Onu Hitler ve K. Marx öldürmüştü. Onu hiçbir zaman sevmemiş sevgilisi Rus Asja Lacis, onu doğru düzgün sevmeyi hiç öğrenmemiş olan karısı Dora öldürmüştü”.
Bugün mezarının ve canı kadar önemsediği evrak çantasındaki elyazmalarının ne olduğu bilinmeyen W. June 30, 2024امتیازدهی برای این کتاب برایم کار دشواری است. ترجیح میدهم امتیازی ندهم و صرفا با بیان وجوه مختلف کتاب خوانندگان دیگر را برای خواندنش سر شوق آورم یا بشورانم.
افرادی هستند که صرف دیدن عکسشان، خواندن جملهای از آنها و یا توصیف دیگران از آنها، ممکن است در دل شما جا باز کنند. برای من، یکی از این افراد، والتر بنیامین بود.
والتر بنیامین شاید برای من از آن چشمان مستأصل مشتری خانمی که میدانستم کتابهای خوبی میخواند شروع شد. آمد به کتابفروشی فرهنگ زنجان، من آن موقع نه کتابفروش بودم نه ساکن تهران، جوانکی پی شر و شوراهای ذهنم در آن تنها مکان آسایشبخش در آن شهر خالی بودم. دیدم ردیف فلسفه را مدام از بالا به پایین و از چپ به راست میرود و میآید و چشمانش مدام میگردند اما شکار نمیکنند. زیر لب مدام میگفت:« پس کجاست؟ پس کجاست؟» متصدی آنجا که زیاد هم به قفسه کتابها مسلط نبود گفت :« تو سیستم یک نسخه هست اما شاید جا به جا کرده باشن مشتریا» و خودش هم رفت در جای پرتی مشغول گشتن شد.
آهسته جلو رفتم و گفتم :« خانم دنبال کتاب خاصی هستین؟» به سرعت برگشت سمت من و گفت :« بله، خیابان یک طرفهی بنیامین» بر حسب تصادف دستش را به قفسهی والتر بنیامین تکیه داده بود. زیر لب خندیدم و گفت :« اجازه بدید... همین جاست» و از کنار دستش کتابش را بهش دادم. خانم هم خندهش گرفت هم سرخ شد فقط توانست یک تشکر حسابی بکند و به سرعت محل را ترک کند. ولی آن میزان از عطش برای یک کتاب فلسفی آن هم از طرف دختری نسبتا جوان برایم جالب شد ولی بعد از مدتی فراموش هم شد. من بنیامین را فقط به اسم میشناختم، بعد از آن هم چندان نشناختم.
شاید هم در همان ایام و در یکی از تخفیف های فصلی که به تازگی مد شده بود و تا سقف صد هزار تومان اعتبار داشت، با والتر بنیامین ارتباط گرفتم. پاییز بود، از دبیرستانمان که وسط شهر بود زده بودم بیرون، شیفت عصر بودم و برای اینکه تا قبل از رفتن آخرین اتوبوس بتوانم به خانه برسم فقط دو ساعت وقت داشتم به کتاب خریدن صرف کنم. یکی از کتابهایی که از آن خرید ماند کتابی بود به نام «فهم برشت». فردایش معلم ادبیاتم آمار خرید کتابهایم را گرفت و دانه دانه که اسم بردم رسید به شماره آخر که این کتاب بود. ازم پرسید :« کی نوشته اینو؟» گفتم « والتر بنیامین فکر کنم» البته که آن موقع بخاطر برشت آن کتاب را خریدم و نه بنیامین. معلمم گفت « میتونی به من قرضش بدی؟ باید کتاب جالبی باشه اگه بنیامین نوشته باشه.» من کماکان بنیامین را نمیشناختم ولی اینگونه واکنشها به او برایم خوشایند بود. فقط انگار اسمش و آن عینک و سبیل و سیگارش که شبیه پدران دهه چهلی ایرانی بود توجه و ذوقم را جلب میکرد.
اما اولین مواجهه رسمی من با بنیامین مصادف شد با اولین روزهای دانشجویی و سکونت در تهران و شکار کتاب در تهران البته با بودجهی همیشه محدود دانشجو. پس کتاب قیمت قدیمی به نام « درباره زبان و تاریخ» که البته بنظرم بسیار شکیل هم بود و ترجمهی معتبری داشت را نبایست از دست میدادم. وقتی شروع به خواندن کردم دیدم آن خوشایندی های از روی حدس و تصور با واقعیت بنیامین تطبیق دارند. همان چیزی بود که بایستی میبود؛ موجز و فشرده، نو، شخصی، پیچیده و مبهم. دالانهایی تو در تو و بیسرانجام قطعی در جهانهایی گسترده. زبان، تاریخ، ادبیات، هنر، عرفان یا ایدئولوژی. در هر حال بنیامین شد فیگور جدیدی از متفکر مد نظرم.
تقریبا هرآنچه از او و دربارهی او به فارسی درآمده بود را خریدم و تا حدی خواندم. اما زندگی شخصی او تا حدی معما ماند چرا که بیشتر کتابهایی که درباره او بودند مربوط به حیات فکری او بود. با انتشار این کتاب این فرصت برایم به وجود آمد که یک قدم به دکتر بنیامین نزدیکتر باشم. هرچند نمیتوان از سندیت قطعی زندگینامههای رمانگون صحبت کرد اما علی ایحال لنگه کفشی در بیابان بود.
داستان تقریبا یک فصل در میان، نوع روایتش عوض میشود. نیمی از فصلها از زبان شخصیتهای نزدیک به بنیامین در آخرین روز هایش روایت میشود که به شکل اول شخص است و داستان بنیامین را اغلب به صورت فلاشبک روایت میکنند. نیمی از فصلها هم به شیوهی دانای کل روایت میشود و چنین لحنی برای یک رمان چه بسا در تاثیر روانی آن بر مستند بودن وقایع موثر است.
به عمد یا غیرعمد، مرد تصویر شده در این کتاب، انسانی دیاکتیو و شکست خورده و خوش خیالی است که همهی این ویژگیها در نهایت به کشتنش میدهند. مردد بودن همیشگی بنیامین و یا انبوهی از تفکرات و مقالات به نتیجه نرسیدهی او، چیزی نبود که تا الان کسی منکر آن بشود ولی چنین نمودی از بنیامین بنظرم رویکردی ترحمآمیز داشت.
بنیامین در اینجا مردی است گول خورده و در تمنای زنان که تنها ویژگی مثبت اش این است که مدام اطرافیانش از او به عنوان نابغه نام میبرند اما هیچ نشانهای از نبوغ او نمایان نشد.
نقطهی قوت کتاب هم احتمالا توصیف شخصی مستأصل و نگران ولی به امید و شوخ طبعی جزئی بود که تقریبا خوب از پس آن برآمد.
به طور کلی بعنوان یک داستان، روایت جالب و قابل تعمقی از روزهای آخر زندگی یک متفکر یهودی ارائه کرد، اما مطمئن نیستم که این روایت دقیقا منطبق با آخرین روزهای بنیامین باشد که البته خود نویسنده هم چنین ادعایی ندارد ولی میگوید تا حد امکان سعی کرده به مستندات نزدیک باشد. برای جمعبندی شاید بهتر باشد اینطور گفت این کتاب، برای شناختن والتر بنیامین کافی نیست اما اگر آثار او و یا دربارهی او خوانده باشید احتمالا با این کتاب بهتر متوجه ویژگی پر رنگ بنیامین در زندگی شخصیاش میشوید.
در باب ترجمه : دوست مترجم و ویراستاری دارم که بر حسب اتفاق متوجه شدم هر دو در حال خواندن این کتاب هستیم. ایشون که خودش هم دکترای فلسفه داره معتقده که علیرغم سن پایین مترجم، ترجمه این کتاب خیلی با کیفیت بود. من البته به این شدت و غلظت باهاش موافق نیستم چون متوجه دستاندازهای متن میشدم. هرچند باید این رو هم گفت که این یک رمان سرراسته و هیچ ربطی به متون خود بنیامین نداره و طبیعتاً متن سختی نیست. با این همه ترجمهی نرمالی داشت.

E a treia carte pe care o citesc, scrisă de Parini, prima a fost romanul despre Tolstoi, a doua despre Herman Melville și nu m-am înșelat nici de data aceasta. Stilul biografic-literar al scriitorului își demonstrează din nou măreția, reconstruind polifonic "călătoria" prin viață a gânditorului-filozof care a fost Walter Benjamin, un polihistor de mare anvergură a cărui unică vină a fost să fie contemporan cu Hitler.

در شرایط بسیار عجیبی خوندمش، شرایطی که همدلی کردن با آلمانیهای یهودیای که از گشتاپو فرار میکردن و در کشورهای اروپایی آواره شده بودن و یکی از آرمانهای مشترکشون برگشتن/رفتن به بیتالمقدس بود رو خیلی سخت میکرد. اما با آوارگیها، بدبختیها و وحشتها، دلتنگیهای بینهایت بنیامین برای برلین که تنها شهر و خونهش میدونستش و تنها جایی که توش غریب نبود علیرغم اینکه خودش فرانسه و پاریسیها رو بسیار بیشتر دوست داشته همیشه میشه همدلی کرد، فارغ از تفاوتها و تضادهای آیرانیک وضعیت ما و اونها.
سبک داستان هم سبکی بود که من بسیار بهش علاقهمندم و گویا نویسنده بهش مشهوره. یک جور رمان تاریخی معاصر که با بررسی و پژوهش بسیار نوشته میشه، یعنی دو صفحهی آخر کتاب فهرست منابع و مصاحبههایی بود که نویسنده برای نوشتن این محتوای داستانی بهشون مراجعه کرده بود. درواقع مرز بین داستان و ناداستانه، نزدیکترین حالت داستانی به ناداستانها.
که خوندنش هم بسیار جذابه و هم از جهاتی بسیار اذیتکننده، بخصوص که بنیامین این داستان بنیامین شگفتانگیز ذهن من نبود، آدمی بود که آدمها تقریبا اصلا نمیشناختنش، و اونها که میشناختنش هم علاقهای بهش نداشتن (از خونواده و همسر سابقش گرفته تا تدی آدورنو و بقیه در موسسه پژوهشهای اجتماعی امریکا که اواخر عمرش باهاشون به مشکل خورده بود) و هضم این قاعدتا سخته برای ما. و ندونستن اینکه چقدر از این حسها براساس اسناد و واقعیتها بوده و چقدر مایههای داستانی براومده از ذهن نویسنده سختترش هم میکرد.
اما مجموعا بسیار دوستش داشتم، بسیار بسیار بسیار مشتاقتر شدم که روزی پروژهی پاساژها رو که عصارهی عمرش بوده و در تمام این کتاب همهجا همراه خودش میبردش و از جونش عزیزتر بود براش رو بخونم، ایکاش که به زبان اصلیش، و امیدوارم یه روزی به اون شهر مرزی در اسپانیا برم و به اون قبرستان محلی و گور گمنامش رو پیدا کنم.

Parini’s portrayal of Benjamin offers glimpses into both the fascinating and frustrating aspects of his life and mind. An array of character voices from historical figures, such as Gershom Scholem and Lisa Fittko, lend further insight into Benjamin’s unwavering pursuit of knowledge, his personal shortcomings and struggles, and his devastating demise.
The novel achieves an ease and flow that moves back and forth in time with various characters revealing memories of Benjamin that are sometimes painful and sometimes humorous. Parini’s seemingly effortless prose is lyrical, evocative, and altogether breathtaking and spectacular. He probes the depths and complexity of Benjamin’s cerebral prowess, and he is equally adept with capturing the vivid imagery of cityscapes such as Berlin and Paris and the grandeur of natural landscapes around coastal towns and villages and along routes through the Pyrenees.
The narrative is most impressive, however, with how Parini weaves his abundant details, bursting with beauty and intellection, so seamlessly into a drama that generates an almost unbearable degree of tension and dread. As Benjamin attempts to evade the Nazis and escape from France into Spain and beyond, the urgency of the moment and the tragedy of history kept my heart pounding. Among the many memorable passages I highlighted, I feel compelled, as a librarian myself, to share Parini’s lovely description of the necessity the Bibliothèque Nationale had on Benjamin’s intellectual journey:
“Paris was also a particular library, one that he knew like a blind man knows his own house. For much of the past decade he had sat in the same chair at the same polished table in the Bibliothèque Nationale, in the brilliant shelter of its famous reading room . . . It’s nine domes, colorful enameled tiles, and cast-iron columns emulated the chambers of the ideal mind, the mind in glorious contemplation of eternity. For a decade he had worked there, reading and writing, often in an attitude akin to prayer; he had waited, with infinite patience, as if a voice might speak to him as light flooded in overhead, huge pillaring beams that caught a billion dust motes in their bright atomic dance.”

This is the sort of novel that lit professors in the 90's liked to force their students to read because it was written by a lit professor in the 90's, ergo, they personally thought it was brilliant. And it's not a bad reading experience per se, but neither is it as amazing as those people seemed to think at the time. Parini is trying way too hard to go for the whole "English Patient" treatment that was en vogue back then: stilted, pseudo-technicolor, hyper-melodramatic arthouse depictions of World War II that all invariably reduced an actual war in which millions of real people died into a melodramatic archetype for generic human struggle......when in reality it was simply because every writer of a certain persuasion at the time produced books like this in the vain hope that Anthony Minghella and his ilk would swoop in and turn their derivative WWII-era period piece into an overrated movie just as was done for Ontdaatje.
However, this book, unlike those books, is based on the life of an actual person. And that's the problem. No matter how many people the author interviewed (and I do give him credit for at least being thorough there), it's still never going to be anything more than conjecture, and unnecessarily stylistic conjecture at that. He even has a note in the back of the book saying that the real Asja Lacis required him to write this disclaimer saying that his version of her was totally fictional and not representative of anyone. If you're not going to bother to be accurate with your characterizations of actual people who existed, why write the book at all? That those characterizations are empty, archetypal, and unnecessarily stylized just makes it worse. But worst of all is the premise itself: why write such an ego-driven work of admittedly speculative fiction about someone who died in horrible physical and mental anguish during one of the worst periods in recent human history, after being driven to suicide because he was about to be shipped off to a concentration camp? It's just exploitative. Leave the poor man in peace. If it were really only about glorifying Benjamin's work that would be one thing, but this book feels like on some level it's disingenuously hoping for Minghella to stop by with a film crew (glory to Jay in the highest)...and that's really just not right.

Îmi venea greu să-l recunosc în personajul principal pe autorul "Străzii în sens unic" și iată de ce. Există o nepotrivire în ceea ce ține de caracterul ezitant, indecis al eroului și modul hotărât cu care acesta înfrunta vicisitudinile vieții, între intelectualul timid și formal și obsedatul sexual care nu se putea împăca cu un refuz. Dacă admitem că această dihotomie a existat într-adevăr în spatele ei era musai să existe o nevroză, o spaimă, un complex. Despre asta nimic.
Pe de altă parte, ideile lui Benjamin sunt redate fidel, iar critica (din gura altor personaje) e pertinentă. Chiar așa, eseurile lui Benjamin vor să împace curente ireconciliabile. Ba oscilează spre îmbunătățirea condițiilor sociale în interpretare marxistă, ba se întoarce spre misticismul iudaic. În această privință Jay Parini a prins esența: motivul scrierilor lui Benjamin este faptul că realitatea e strâmbă, iar datoria cărturarului e să o îndrepte. Prin cunoaștere, prin scriere, prin cultură.

Reading this often fascinating book has reminded me that I still have difficulty finishing Holocaust stories. This one may be less horrifying than some; we don’t see extensive scenes in camps nor episodes of mass killing, but we have the same sense of a world gone mad. We know throughout this that to be a Jew is to be a target, to be someone hunted and wanted dead.
The subject in question here is Walter Benjamin, the great theorist of art as it emerges in the Modern world. His ideas mattered when he wrote them, though few realized how. They mattered more when I first encountered him 30 years ago when it was mostly academic types who recognized that the world of mass communication had changed the way we experience (and are shaped by) art. They matter even more now in a world shaped less by art than by copies of art, reproduced in our Facebook and Twitter feeds in such volume that it often seems to be doing our thinking for us.
I admit I am not quite the Benjamin fan that others of my era are. (Public service announcement: it’s pronounced ‘Benyamin’ rather than with the ‘j’ sound.) In this case, Parini puts him into conversation with Gershom Scholem, a thinker I have spent more time with than Benjamin. Scholem was perhaps the first Western-style thinker to take seriously theories of the Kabbalah. Without him, no late-stage Madonna. Also without him, much less understanding of that one-time folk tradition of Judaism, a tradition both more coherent and more intentionally abstract than it might seem to most outsiders.
Scholem, who was very much a real-life friend and correspondent with Benjamin, is the voice of our mourning here. He gets much of the last word, and he meditates on what it means to want to “repair the world,” one of those Kabbalistic concepts that Scholem made accessible to most of us who speak and think in a Western vernacular.
Benjamin was one of the six million victims of the Holocaust, and knowing that from the start makes it hard, achingly hard for me to read this. I know the ending, and I want to forestall it. Maybe, I think, it will be different – it will have not happened – if I don’t read it. If I weren’t listening to it, I suspect I would not have finished. (That’s been an unintentional habit. Years ago, I found my bookmark in Survival at Auschwitz two pages from the end and realized I had stopped two pages short, intending to come back. Sometime later I found I’d done the same thing with the final pages of Maus II – back when that was sold as a two-volume work.)
This is a Jay Parini novel, though, which tells me it’s a work conscious of its own production. In this case, as we get a striking range of narrators – from characters who help and mourn Benjamin to a narrator who stands outside the story – we’re reminded that Benjamin’s ideas trouble what it means to write in this age. Among other mantras, we’re told by Benjamin himself that art aspires to the quality of silence, that true art recognizes it will likely get lost in the din of the modern in any case.
This is, then, a novel about art getting lost and then – impossibly – glimpsed again. [SPOILER: For much of the novel, Benjamin is clutching the only complete manuscript of his only full book, The Arcades Project, and it is a work that indeed does get lost in the end. Some of it does indeed exist, and Parini – in hopeful fashion – calls a part of it into being again.]
I find it no accident that Scholem gets the last word here. I think that Parini, perhaps unspokenly, shares some of my own difficulty with what the Holocaust meant. Benjamin’s friend Theodore Adorno famously declared that, after Auschwitz, art is dead. Here, Parini – for all that he admires Benjamin and presumably Adorno – refuses to end this novel as a Holocaust novel. It ends not with the despair and nothingness of which we get too much, but with the sense that something in the pool of inspirations from the Berlin childhood of Benjamin and Scholem remains. Benjamin dies, and his words are lost, but something of his insistent questioning, something of his having “been” remains.
It's not easy to read this, but it’s some consolation to read it through the lenses that Parini provides. We know how books of the Holocaust end, whether we finish them or not. There’s something beautiful that slips through when we do get there, perhaps a consolation I can’t bring myself to think I deserve since my grandmother survived when so many (her own sister included) did not.

"Călatoria lui Walter Benjamin" a lui Jay Parini mi se pare un roman superb, rotund, scris cu o artă desăvârșită. Pare că autorul stapânește perfect genul biografiilor ficționalizate și mă refer aici, deopotrivă, și la romanul "Ultima gară", un roman la fel de bun. Recomand!

I enjoyed Parini’s treatment of Benjamin and his artful storytelling. One does wonder whether Parini should have addressed the author’s cultural theories in more depth or perhaps ignored them altogether. But really, it’s wonderful to have someone like Parini dealing with writers like Benjamin. Parini is fluent in many different strands of European and American literary and intellectual history, and writes beautifully. I’ve already ordered his books on Frost, Tolstoy, Steinbeck, Vidal, and early Christianity.

Benjamin's Crossing is my introduction to Jay Parini's fiction, mostly because I was interested in its hero—the intellectual, Walter Benjamin (1892-1940.) I will seek out more of Parini's writing. Here, he writes with a poet's eye, he deftly weaves together multiple narrators, and he sets a paces much like the hero's own odyssey. This book will appeal to a contemplative reader, but it is not at all dry. There are plenty of memorable episodes, and Benjamin is a strong character.

O carte impecabil scrisă, în baza unui demers quasi-jurnalistic (judecând după interviurile prealabile) și bine documentată (care pornește de la toate eseurile scrise pe marginea operei lui Walter Benjamin), dar care nu atinge ceea ce va fi, de fapt, imposibil de atins : apropierea de omul Walter Benjamin și de universul lui. Cu o tehnică fluidă și corectă, scriitorul reușește doar apropierea de drama evreului fugar, în timpul celui de-al doilea Război Mondial. O face credibil. Reconstituie cu brio spiritul epocii și chiar oferă perspective suplimentare, asupra evreilor nehotărâți sau neconvinși de tragedia care se apropie, asupra fugii prin munți, în Spania lui Franco, apoi mai departe, cu tot ce presupunea o călătorie atât de riscantă, pe poteci înguste și abrupte, cu spatele lipit de pereții de stâncă, în plin vertij deasupra abisurilor. Fuga de nemți, spre sudul Franței, din iunie 1940, apare mult mai bine la Irène Nemirovski.
Dacă romanul s-ar fi redus doar la atât și la acest tip de călătorie, așa cum titlul o arată, ar fi fost o misiune îndeplinită (în termeni vizuali, o docudrama cinstită).
Scriitorul vine, însă, și cu o perspectivă neverificată -și neverificabilă- asupra omului Walter Benjamin. Pune în gura personajelor adevăruri despre acesta. Era, întâi de toate, un nehotărât, un șovăielnic - un sucit, ce mai încolo și-ncoace, care nici asupra unui meniu de restaurant nu se putea decide, nici chiar după ce mâncase. Nici când, în cele din urmă, se decisese să părăsească Parisul, căzut în mâinile nemților, nu se hotărâse dacă se îndrepta spre America, Eretz, Cuba sau Antarctica.
Mai mult, era un inconsecvent, care nu putea fi nici jurnalist (prea multă și susținută muncă), nici profesor de catedră (prea timid și prea marginal), nici scriitor (scrisul lui era prolix și plictisea). Nici una din meseriile burgheze nu i se potrivea și, chiar dacă i s-ar fi potrivit, ar fi oscilat între ele, ca și între estetic si politic, ca și între marxism și bolșevism.
Cartea lui despre opera germană barocă nu avea, nici ea, alte merite în afară de acela de a fi singura lucrare coerentă, scrisă după tipicul unei teze.
Singurul lui merit era acela că reprezenta spiritul european, că era o enciclopedie ambulantă și avea "fulgerări de intuiție, nu argumente fundamentale", pentru acestea din urmă nefiind capabil. Un eseist care se mulțumea mai mult cu fragmentul, până când nici fragmentarist nu a mai fost, devenind un simplu refugiat -pe scurt, un Evreu Rătăcitor.

După o lungă și strașnică documentare Jay Parini reconstituie ultimele luni din viața filozofului Walter Benjamin. Mărturiile, scrisorile, jurnalele și memoriile contemporanilor care au supraviețuit celui de-Al Doilea Război Mondial au ajutat-o la conturarea portretului lui Benjamin.
La începutul anilor 1930, când atmosfera politică și intelectuală devine sufocantă, Walter se mută la Paris cu speranța trăirii și publicării proiectelor proprii fără intervenție politică. Majoritatea timpului și-l petrecea la biblioteca publică unde se documentează, scrie, publică și lucrează la propria lucrare.
Odată cu înaintarea germanilor în Franța, speranța și rațiunea de a fi se năruie. Pornește în ultima călătorie spre sudul Franței, spre Portugalia, cu intenția de a ajunge la New York la prietenul lui. Problema a fost că decizia de a părăsi Parisul a fost luată mult prea târziu.

Benjamin's sadly mistaken assessment of the rise of Adolph Hitler essentially cost him his life. While the characters in the novel shared humorous and sometimes pathetic anecdotes about Benjamin, on the whole the book often dragged and I found myself looking ahead to the next section.

Având ca fundal întâmplări din timpul celui de-al Doilea Război Mondial, cartea lui Jay Parini conturează un itinerariu polivalent al călătoriei intelectuale a lui Benjamin și al vremurilor tumultoase în care a trăit. Cercetarea meticuloasă și proza expresivă a scriitorului american dau viață personajului complex al lui Benjamin, încercând în același timp să arunce lumină asupra meditațiilor sale filosofice și asupra impactului profund pe care la avut atât în plan profesional, cât și în plan cultural, explorând fascinația lui Walter Benjamin față de artă, cultură și condiția umană. Jay Parini se concentrează asupra mai multor episoade din viața lui Benjamin (perioada de dinaintea și din timpul Primului Război Mondial, vizita în Rusia, viața din Paris la sfârșitul anilor ’30, fuga sa în Spania) și folosește mai mulți naratori. A fictionalization of the true fascinating story of German intellectual Jews during the crucial early years and rising of Hitler's Germany. I enjoyed it, although not as much as The Last Station by Parini. It did get me interested in Walter Benjamin's life and his escape from Nazi Germany, in which he basically WALKED to Spain only to commit suicide days after arriving. Will read a true account of that journey next and see how Parini did with fictionalizing it.

Benjamin is a fascinating character, and I enjoyed reading this and learning more about his terrible, final days. It's not nearly as good as _When Nietsche Wept_, a similar kind of book. But it was still worth the read.

I need to write to Jay Parini. Was the missing manuscript ever recovered? Parini did an excellent job fictionalizing this biography. I learned a great deal and was impressed with his characterizations.
