Playing with Fire is the first book in the Mended Hearts series set in Lexi Ryan's New Hope World. I just learned that all her previous series are set in the same location. Is hard to imagine small town New Hope had endless of love and drama.

Dr Phoenix Nix is a woman with a secret past. It is something she's ashamed and guilty of that she never tell a single soul about it. Settling in New Hope was meant to bring her a new life and new beginning and hooking up with single dad, Max seems to be great until her past came back to haunt her.

Maximilian Hallowell is Mr Nice Guy and Hot Single Dad roll up in one sexy package. He is an easy going, down to earth and a good nature chap. I miss these kind of guys. Too bad he had a big crush on the woman who kept blowing him off. He give patience, tenacity, understanding a whole new meaning with his devotion to Nix.

This is my first Lexi Ryan's book, so to have all her old characters making constant appearances here is rather overwhelming. Is hard for me to keep track with so many couples around. We have couples from Splintered Hearts: The New Hope Trilogy, Reckless and Real: The Complete Series and Here and Now: Complete Series. There is so much history with these people that I miss. I appreciate having some strong secondary characters, but I think it should be tone down a bit to let new readers adjust better. I don't need scene with these old couple making out and making googly eyes at each other.

Max seems to have such difficult past relationships. He had a daughter with a woman and then he had an ex-fiance to dump him for another man. It baffled me that some women actually can pass up such a great man because by half the book I actually want to have his babies. It make me so mad on his behalf that I actually went over and read up about Here and Now: Complete Series. It seems like that series is a big ole mess love triangle and Max was the guy who didn't get the girl. Poor Max.

description

Back to Playing with Fire with Dr Nix. This woman is the cause of much frustration and serious case of blueballs. She just keep pushing Max away and hurting his feelings. I want to be so mad at her, but I can't because her reasons are valid. She had a deranged ex-boyfriend stalking her and may harm her friends. So I get why Nix acted that way. But it make my head hurts to see her giving all these mixed signal to Max.

description

What did Max do with all of this bullshit? He just ready with his big broad shoulder waiting for her to lean on him. If Max is a chick, I'll surely be screaming 'DOORMAT ALERT'. But since he's a guy, I think he's as rare as a unicorn. Totally book husband material right there.

Overall, this book really had me hooked because I simply want Max to get the girl. He so deserve to have his own HEA albeit one that was so difficult to achieve. The secret past of Nix provide a good dose of suspense and drama. Apart from the problem with too many secondary characters around, I really enjoy the read. Can't wait to Cade, the local cop story. I wonder who is the mysterious Catwoman with him at the end. Meow!

Phoenix Reid ran from her old life and now keeps her past from her friends, never wanting them to find out where she came from. Max Hallowell has been pining after Nix for months and wants to know everything there is to know about her. He finally works up the courage to ask her out but before he gets a chance she jumps his bones (he didn't put up much of a fight, of course). After their one night stand he finally asks her out and she agrees. But when she starts seeing hints that her past has finally caught up to her she cancels the date and avoids him for months. Max doesn't give up so easily though and decides he won't let her run from their attraction.

Max was the truly fictional good guy. You know the one, hot as hell yet sweet as can be and no where to be found in the real world. He was so patient with Nix and understanding when he finally learned of everything she had been dealing with. I kept screaming at him to go get his girl and refused to put this book down until he did. He's a single father and, apparently, a great one. I wouldn't really know because we only got to read of one interaction with his daughter. She was mentioned multiple times, and it was said that he was a wonderful father but we never actually got to see that and I would have liked to read about him with her.

Nix had a lot of secrets and it made for a suspenseful read trying to figure out what all of them were. I liked the mystery we got mixed in with the romance and it had me gripping my Kindle every time I though I was close to figuring out what was really going on. I did find Nix a little frustrating at times but overall she was an okay character.

I had just a little bit of issues with the overall story and there were some things that just didn't seem to work for me but I enjoyed it. There are a lot of secondary characters mentioned that have already had stories by Lexi Ryan that I haven't read yet and it was a little hard to keep track of everyone and all of their stories that were mentioned. The book started out a little iffy because I've only read one of this author's other books and found myself confused at the mention of her other characters. This book can certainly be read as a standalone, and it's a new series but if you're like me and so damn curious when the secondary characters have a story, then I recommend reading Ms. Ryan's other books first.

Well, that was fantastic. I really, really enjoyed every minute. This was my first Lexi Ryan read and certainly not my last. The suspense was WHOA. My heart pounded over and over again.

Anyway... I LOVED the main character Max. He was so darn sweet and unbelievably sexy. He had the perfect balance between alpha and good boy!

Overall, I picked this up on a whim, read it in one sitting, and freaking loved it, so it's a total winner! I cannot wait to dive into other novels by this author. Her writing is awesome.

It's been nearly two years since I ventured back to the little town of New Hope (in a lexi Ryan book) and on one hand I can say, reading "Playing with Fire" was like coming home, that sense of familiarity consuming me the minute I turned the first page but on the other hand, it was like so much had changed in the time I'd been away. It appears I'd missed some fantastic stories and equally I'd missed being introduced to some amazing characters but for that, I can only blame myself. "Playing with Fire" really highlighted that I'd done myself a disservice by not keeping up with the works of this author because I absolutely loved everything about Max and Nix's story.
It's almost a desperate kiss- as if she's been waiting a lifetime for my mouth and I'm the only one who can bring her pleasure.

Nix and Max were a new couple to me but I fell in love with each of them very quickly and adored watching their journey to a HEA unravel. As the synopsis says, Nix had a history, a past she was desperately trying to run from and New Hope had been a fresh start for her. I would never have guessed her back story and am thankful for the fact that it was original and different from what we are used to reading about. A relationship was something she didn't want, couldn't want and so she immersed herself in work and her friends. Her character was one that intrigued me and as I was drip fed snippets from her past, my heart broke. I could sense her despair, her anguish and her inner turmoil. There were things in life she wanted... things she would have loved to have (one of them being Max) but her past was a constant reminder that such things weren't possible. On the flip side of that, I was also in awe at the strength and resilience this woman displayed. With everything she had been through (which becomes clearer as you read on), and to achieve everything she had took guts and bravery and there almost a sense of pride in the person she had become.
"Hey why are you so convinced I'm going to hurt you?"
"Because I've never been with a man who didn't."

And Max, well he hadn't had much luck in the relationship department. In fact every relationship he had been in had turned to mush but out of it, he had a gorgeous little girl who he was primary parent to. Boy oh boy did my insides go all gooey at how wonderful a dad he was. And on top of that, he was not only physically appealing but he was a true gentleman in every sense of the word. Trust me when I say, it was difficult not to go weak at the knees at Max. He was sweet. He was protective. He was alpha. He was domineering and he was all kinds of crazy hot in the bedroom department. He really was just the perfect package and shame on those women who had broken this man's heart because honestly, I didn't get it. I mean really????? Lexi Ryan you really know how to write a male lead that will make the women swoon.

So Max and Nix's story really wasn't as straight forward as two people who had been burned before getting together. There was so much at stake, so much at risk and so their coming together was slow with a lot of push and pull and a hell of a lot of would they... wouldn't they. Of course I got frustrated but I understood why it had to be this way. Having their story go any other way would have felt unrealistic and a little forced and when you get to the last page, everything will become clearer and you'll get it. I was with this couple until the end, rooting for them and be damned if they didn't get that beautiful, sweet HEA we are so used to getting from this author!!!
“I’m not looking to rescue anyone. But if you’re the one who needs saving, I’m happy to invest in a stallion and learn how to ride.”

"Playing with fire" was a book that had me hooked very quickly. There was so much mystery and suspense surrounding Nix and I couldn't wait to get to the nitty gritty of it all, the drip fed tid bits of information only serving to heighten my enjoyment of what I was reading. The story line was definitely unique and gripping and the drama surrounding both Max and Nix as individuals and as a couple had me eager to reach the end to see how everything turned out. Well let's just say, it was an action packed finale... one that had me on the edge of my seat wondering just who was friend or foe!!!

Lexi Ryan has this ability to suck you into the lives of her characters, making you feel every ounce of what they go through; the happiness, the sadness, the anger and the fear. And that for me was the icing on the cake for this book. As much as it was a brilliant story, it was the added fact that I could feel all the emotions the characters experienced and by the end, I honestly felt like I'd been through the emotional wringer but in the best possible way.
Max found out I’m afraid of the dark and bought me a nightlight. He found out I was afraid of falling for him, and he’s giving me time.

Another job well done to this author and I promise not to leave it so long before I go visit the towns folk of New Hope again. I rated "Playing with Fire" ❤️❤️❤️❤️

I was waiting patiently for Max HEA for some time now and the story was like him cute.

For those who have read other books by Lexi Ryan, you already most of the characters who will appear in this one. Even if it's a stand-alone, most of Lexi Ryan's books are connected to one another and a lot of them are happening in New Hope.

If you want to start from the beginning, here's the order, you need to follow:
Unbreak Me (Splintered Hearts, #1) by Lexi Ryan Stolen Wishes (Splintered Hearts, #1.5) by Lexi Ryan Wish I May (Splintered Hearts, #2) by Lexi Ryan
Lost in Me (Here and Now, #1) by Lexi Ryan Fall to You (Here and Now, #2) by Lexi Ryan All for This (Here and Now, #3) by Lexi Ryan
Something Wild (Reckless & Real, #0.5) by Lexi Ryan Something Reckless (Reckless & Real, #1) by Lexi Ryan Something Real (Reckless & Real, #2) by Lexi Ryan

If you don't want to read all of them before this story I only recommend to read the Here and Now trilogy, just so you can learn more about Max.

description

Nix wants everyone to believe she's a strong independent woman but she knows better.
She is hiding from her past and now it seems that all is coming back at her.

description

Max has always been known as the good guy but who never get the girl at the end.
He lives a happy life with his daughter Claire and he seems content. At the same time, he's very attracted by Nix. He doesn't know her that well but when a chance to get close comes by, he's happy to help.

Too bad, Nix is trying to keep personal relation at bay.

“Everyone needs someone. Some of us are just better at lying to ourselves than others.”

I honestly enjoy this story. Lexi Ryan doesn't make things easy for Max in the past and he's going to work for his happiness in this one as well. What I liked was how both of them are trying to protect the other but in two different ways.

Max doesn't know who he is fighting because Nix is very secretive. She doesn't want to see him hurt but she doesn't understand that it's her own actions that hurt him the most.

“I can be trusted with secrets, Nix. If you need someone to hold some of yours, I’m good for it.”

They come close together slowly and it's sweet, beautiful just like I thought it would be.

Other couples from previous books come and go and I was happy to have some news on each of them. I think it's the first book where everybody seems happy in their lives.

Yes I found Nix a little frustrating at times but when you finally understand her real reasons to stay away and push what she feels for Max, you can only appreciate what she wants to do.

"Max found out I’m afraid of the dark and bought me a nightlight. He found out I was afraid of falling for him, and he’s giving me time."

This story just didn't click for me and that sucks because when I read the overview I was excited to start this. I guess you win some and you lose some. The premise of the novel is interesting but the execution was confusing and a bit weird for me. I have to say I really did like how good of a guy the hero, Max, was but there was just too much that didn't unfold neatly for me to really enjoy the read. This gets a disappointed and sighing 3 stars from me.

Lexi Ryan never disappoints. Honestly, I’m pretty useless when I have one of her books in my hand. I couldn’t put this one down for anything, thanks to Maximillian Hallowell.

If you’ve read the Here and Now series then you know, Max hasn’t always been the easiest guy to love. I thought he was a douchebag and would have been devastated if he ended up with Hanna. I’m talking total devastation. There was no way, anyone could convince me, I would ever be Team Max. I’m happy to be eating my words right now, because he totally redeemed himself. After finding out a few circumstances were misconstrued, and seeing him with Nix, I’m actually convinced he’s a great guy.

“I’m not looking to rescue anyone.”
“But if you’re the one who needs saving, I’m happy to invest in a stallion and learn how to ride.”

Max has really come a long way. His gym is successful now, giving him time to focus on his daughter that he’s practically raising as a single parent. When Hanna left him heartbroken, he decided to give up on dating for a while. It’s Phoenix, the newest member of his group of friends that makes him think, just maybe, he’s ready to get back in the game.

Nix is such an enigma though. She’s one mixed signal after another. She initiates the garage floor sex (yes, garage floor!), that’s how bad she wants him, but almost immediately after tries to push him away. It was easy to get frustrated with her, but once I understood what she was up against, it all made sense. Her past added a suspenseful aspect, which I think bumped it up a notch, making it more than the typical hot guy falling for the broken girl storyline.

“Don’t make me want something I can’t have.”

The chemistry between Max and Nix was addictive and that’s what makes this author’s books winners for me consistently. There were so many times that Max and Nix made me smile throughout. Even I can’t believe I’m saying this now, but Max was pretty close to perfection in my eyes and she was kind of standoffish, which I found endearing in a way. You could totally see she wanted him, needed him really, but just wouldn’t let herself have him. Good thing, he knew exactly what to say.

I'm going to be honest. I wasn't sure what to expect from Max and Nix's story, but it sure wasn't to find Nix was a much different woman than I thought or that I would like Max much better now that he wasn't with Hannah.

PLAYING WITH FIRE is the first book in the Mended Hearts series, but it's connected to several other series (listed below). You can read this as a stand alone, but if you want to truly understand the dynamics between Nix, Max and the rest of their friends in New Hope you need to read the other books first.

I wasn't really sure if there was ever going to come a point where I liked Max. So much had happened in the other stories that I wasn't sure if I could really trust him. But seeing him a few years removed from Hannah's story, I found I did like him. I was glad to see him happily raising his daughter and trying to be the best man possible for her. And I loved how he was that guy that wanted to ride in on his white horse, especially with Nix.

Nix was always a hard character to read and we finally discover why. Considering everything she had been through, it was amazing she was still able to get out of bed in the morning. The fact that should could endeared me to her more. Made me understand why she kept people at arms length, even if it killed her to do so. But it also made me hope that Max, Liz, and the rest of the New Hope crew would finally get the good doctor to open up and finally give herself to all of them.

I really enjoyed the storyline regarding Nix's background. It was creepy and fed into every notion I had about the life she used to live, while keeping me on the edge of my seat until the very end.

Another great book by Lexi Ryan. She never fails to deliver a book that packs a bunch, not only with some pretty hot sexy times but also with the emotions her characters also spill onto you. If you haven't been introduced to the residents of New Hope, you must definitely need to.

I really enjoyed Max at New Hope and i was curious enough to see his own journey. This was a very fast and enjoyable reading. I was glad to see a nice guy to have his own happy ending.

The mystery behind Dr. Phoenix aka Reid was easy to follow plus i never expected anything like that too.

Max and Reid was really so much fun to read and i was satisfied in the end how things turned up for both of them!

Cant wait to read the next book in the series!!

~ 4 Suspenseful Stars ~

Lexi Ryan is quickly becoming a favorite author of mine. Her books are both captivating and sexy. I find her books intriguing and I have no problem sinking myself into the characters she creates and the story lines she gives those characters. Her books are fairly quick reads, but I like that because she doesn't fill the stories with unwanted information that the reader doesn't need.

Playing With Fire is a book filled with mystery, suspense, angst, heartbreak, painful pasts, and some extremely sexy times ;) This book grabs you from the beginning and doesn't let go. This is the first book in her newest series called the Mended Hearts. All of the books are stand-alones but have interconnecting characters. This is the second group of characters I have read from her, my first being Sam and Lizzy's story. I do find that as a reader it might be beneficial to read all the New Hope books to get the full feel of the characters and their dynamics with each other. With that said I never felt lost by not reading the other books, Lexi does a fine job filling in the blanks. Sometimes I feel like I am missing the connection between all the characters, but it doesn't take away from my enjoyment of the book.

In this book we meet Nix and Max. Nix is one of the girlfriends of the other female New Hope characters. Max is the Best friend to some of the male New Hope characters. Nix's past was a unique one to me, in the sense that I have never read about this subject matter before. I don't want to say more on that because that will take away the mystery and suspense of the story. Just know that she comes from a very troubled past and her life has been in constant danger for the last 13 years. She has a tough time trusting men, which in turn led to A LOT of angst in this story. There were many times I wanted to smack her and tell her to wake up. Even though her reasons were valid, I didn't always like the way she played with Max's emotions. As for Max…..he was a saint. This man had patience in spades. I couldn't believe he continued to stick around after some of the stuff she pulled on him, but he truly did love her unconditionally!!!!

I continue to like that the other New Hope characters were in this story, because they added some of the comic relief the story needed, but also great support to Nix and Max. It was great to see Lizzy and Sam's relationship continue to grow and flourish. I look forward to reading about Cade and his mystery woman.

So if you like a book filled with angst, mystery, romance, suspense, and steamy scenes, then don't miss out on Nix and Max's story.

I have really enjoyed following the characters of New Hope and when I first met Max he wasn't my favorite but later I grew to really like him; however I don't feel like this book did much for Max or Nix. It was a good story but I was missing something. Hanna and Nate are still my favorite!

Max is fantastic--the ultimate good-guy hero. I haven't read the other books that he played a big part in (Here and Now: Complete Series), but there's enough of a recap of what you need to know to understand where he's coming from in this book. Having read Liz and Sam's books (Reckless and Real: The Complete Series), I was excited to get to Max's HEA--especially after the scene in Something Real where Liz shows up on Nix's door and finds her and Max just after what has clearly been an intimate moment.

I was so ready for him to get an HEA--obviously the guy deserved one. I was ready to love this book so much.

But...it didn't quite deliver as I'd hoped.

Mostly it was Nix--she's all over the place in this book. Pushing Max away, crawling into his bed in the middle of the night, telling Cade (a cop, and the hero of the next book in the series--since he has a thing for Nix in this one I'm glad his HEA is next) about the weird stalker-ish things going on in her life but then keeping it from both him and Max when she finally figures out what's really going on and who's behind it...it was exhausting trying to keep up with all of her bouncing around.

The resolution of the stalker storyline/Nix's past came about much too quickly and neatly, especially after all the dramatic build-up. It's hard to believe that Nix's mom and sister will be able to assimilate into the "normal" world as easily as the book's ending seems to imply--can being on her meds again really make Nix's mother show such a dramatic turn around? What about Amy's B&E tendencies and all her talk about "God's plan"?

Plus, for all that Nix is a doctor it was a complete non-entity in this book. She's referred to as the "hot doctor" a lot and she does see Max and his daughter Claire in her office before the book starts, but during the story we never see her at work. She talked about having to go to the hospital and doing rounds and once she used her doctor persona to get into a person's hospital room for personal reasons, but that's it. I'd be hard pressed to remember when a main character's job was so completely ignored in a novel--it was odd.

Still, Max got the girl, and I have high hopes that without all the drama from Nix's past getting in their way that they'll be good together and make an adorable, happy family along with Claire. The epilogue is a teaser for Cade's story, and naturally it has me hooked--so even though this one wasn't quite my cup of tea I'll definitely be continuing with the series.

I swear I fall in love with the small town of New Hope all over again with every one of Lexi’s books. I was so excited to finally see Max find love after all of the craptastic relationships he has gone through.

“Why do I always want the girl who doesn’t want me, Hanna? That seems pretty fucked up to me.”

And that is the million dollar question. Poor Max, a sexy personal trainer, has the worst luck when it comes to relationships. He is a fantastic father and the sweetest man, and is so swoonworthy! I can’t get enough of him.

Phoenix ‘Nix’ Reid has been a bit of a secret since coming to the small town. She easily fit into the crew, but keeps to herself as much as possible, which means men and relationships are off limits. I loved getting to know her story, sad as it was.

“Yeah, I’m pretty sure my psycho ex-boyfriend from thirteen years ago is stalking me.”

This story really had it all – love, suspense, drama, angst, sweetness, and steaminess. The chemistry between Nix and Max was off the charts.

“I want to be buried deep inside you and have you ride me until you come.”

I couldn’t put this story down and was so happy that we got to see the entire New Hope crew and their families. I loved every minute of it. Nate and Hanna are still my favorites, but I do love them all! And I can’t wait for Cade’s story! Give it to me NOW please! ~ Tiffany, 5 stars

I was given this book for my honest review.

“I am so pathetically, desperately, irrevocably in love with you.” Max

This is the 1st book in the Mended Hearts by this author

Nix-pretty, scarred

Max-hot and sexy

Max and Nix’s journey is sorrowful, legendary and sexy. The turmoil’s that this couple goes through to finding their forever is not just a turn on that will have you gripping at the pages but a calmness of oneself that will have you wanting to throw the book at times. The screaming towel is a must but at the same time tissues will be a favorite. The sex between this couple is hot to some degree but romantic at the same time. The wanting of these two is just unimaginable at times but once the heat is pronounced get the ice cubes out and the ice-cream float about.

To the author this book was amazing to me. The enlightenment that was created by you was insightful and had me on the edge of my seat the entire read. Kudos

Happy Reading

Main Characters: Max and Nix

This is a tough read for those who haven’t read the other series, There is sooo many supporting characters that previous reader will LOVE, but new-commers will be like WHAT? WHY? It is hard to read a “stand alone” that is really a spin off from other series. Overall the story was good. Nix has a secret past and angst like crazy, Her story provides the suspense. Max is the picture perfect support and LOVE him with his daughter. He was almost a little too patient, but you root for him the whole way because he deserves it. It was a interesting read but and it is a stand-alone, but it is a spin off, so to truly enjoy this you should start with her other series.

Hot Hot Hot

If you play with fire you might get burned. However this is a different burn. More like a constant burning ache. Max and Nix have a relationship with secrets she's hiding and he's trying to pull her out of the fire that fuels her past nightmares.

First book by author. Will not be my last!!

I never expected Nix's past to be what it was. It sure made for interesting reading. I liked how Max coaxed the story out of Nix, while supporting her the whole time. With the past finally put to rest, the future will be nothing but bright for them both!

The first 5% reads like it’s a story out of one of those dirty magazines. He comes over with the intent to ask her out and within minutes they are banging on the garage floor. I like a little bit more set up for my romances where they actually fall in love or have some interest in each other. This is just not what I want.

I can never tell exactly what I'll get with one of Lexi's books –and I wasn't expecting Nix's backstory to be as complicated as it was. But, holy crap. What a fantastic read. I couldn't get enough of this book.

There was a time in the New Hope world where I wasn't all that warm to Max. I was suspicious of him and, more than anything, I didn't want him with Hanna. It turns out he's a really great man and I was thrilled that he got his chance at a real happily ever after in this book. But, it wasn't going to be easy...

So, yeah, I fell for Max hard during this book. He's a great man, a wonderful father, a fantastic friend. He's sizzling hot and protective and he can rescue me on a stallion any day of the week. *swoons* It was impossible NOT to love him in this book. Nix, too, was a great character. It was a little tougher to get a read on her because she was keeping so many things secret, but I still liked her. She was a tough cookie and, after learning more of the things she dealt with when she was younger, I see why she had to be. No way she could've survived otherwise.

Max and Nix had tons of chemistry and the sexual tension between them sizzled. Her walls were up tight, but if anyone was going to be able to get through them, it was Max. I mean, how can you resist the sexy single father with an amazing heart? I don't know how she fought her feelings for as long as she did, to be honest. There was definitely a good bit of back and forth in this book and it bordered on frustrating at times, but the more I found out about Nix's background, the more I understood. I just wanted them to both be happy... you know, together. That's not asking too much, is it? :)

There were definitely some unexpected twists and turns in this book. The blurb is pretty vague, so I will be too, but expect the unexpected from Playing with Fire. More than once I was left wondering if something was real and what could possibly happen next. When you take the suspense and mystery and mix it together with the passion these characters share, you get something special. Set it in the New Hope world, with its characters I love, couples I've rooted for and friendships I've enjoyed watching develop and I'm one happy reader.

I really love the New Hope bunch more and more with each new book/series. I love how everyone is connected and how strong the personal relationships are between them. And, you know me, I love getting new tidbits about characters I love, so it's great to see everyone back together again in this new series. Since Lexi is known for her wicked cliffhangers, I have to mention you won't find one here! Huzzah! There is, however, a wicked teaser for the next book and I really, really can't wait for Cade's story in the second Love Unbound book. Hopefully it'll be here sooner rather than later.

I've been waiting for Max's HEA for what feels like forever.  Finally...finally Lexi Ryan delivers and she does it in a big way!

It wasn't until Something Real (Reckless & Real #2) that Max hooking up with Nix even blipped on my radar.  I don't know why.  I just didn't think of Nix that way.  She always came across as aloof and different from "their" big group of friends.  I'm not sure I imagined her getting a story at all.  That's not to say I didn't want or need it.  I guess at the time I didn't realize that I wanted or needed it.

Playing with Fire wasn't at all what I expected for Max or Nix.  That's not good or bad.  It was just a surprising read and once I got into it, as usual for Lexi's books, I couldn't put it down.  There's a pretty decent suspense wrapped up in that romance ya got there.  Nix has some pretty big heavy baggage she's carrying around on those doctor shoulders of hers.  It's created this character built on unusual beliefs, trauma, and heartbreak.  Nix is hiding from not only her past but herself in a lot of ways.  She's had no choice but to be tough and it was really nice to see Max bring out another side of her.

Max our resident night in shining armor.  Boy does he have his work cut out for him in this story.  Again, I never would have put Max and Nix together, but that's why I'm not an author.  I say that because they actually worked really well together.  Max was always saving the WRONG girl.  With Nix he's finally found a perfect person to help.  Only she doesn't need or want it.  I think that's an aspect that I really appreciated in Lexi Ryan's storytelling.  She made Phoenix brave, smart, and tough regardless of her past issues, no matter her secrets, she's one tough cookie.  Not who you would think needed saving.  She could do her own saving darn it.  Max was exactly what I'd hoped he would be, protective, sweet, and oh so patient.

AND that my friends is what makes this a terrific story.  Take one hero without a cause...or a girlfriend and add in one tough as nails gorgeous albeit in danger, heroine who needs no man to protect her...and you have the bones for a really fun, sweet, sexy, thriller of a couple.  Playing with Fire is hot on way too many levels, literally and figuratively.  The story is compelling, intriguing, scary and perfectly imperfect for Max and Nix.

We were introduced to Cade in this story and I'm literally bouncing in my seat!  I can't wait to read his story!  Bring on Catwoman!!

I've been waiting and waiting and waiting for this book!! Max Halloway has the WORST luck with women. I mean the WORST. So when I heard he was getting a story I knew it was going to be a heartbreaker, but I was so freaking excited to know that he was going to get his HEA. And Playing with Fire gave me exactly what I wanted. IT showed Max throwing his heart on the line once more and needing a woman to put him (and his daughter) first. And Phoenix was that woman. And wowzers was their chemistry magnetic.

Phoenix invented the term tortured past. I mean, Lexi Ryan obviously drummed up two people who need LOTS of TLC and threw them together, who knew they'd make the ultimate perfect couple. Although, it's hard to rival Hanna and Nate, Max and Phoenix may be tied with them for my fave New Hope couple. Even after Nix's horrible, and haunting past comes back to deliver another terrifying hand, Max is still stuck to her like glue. He isn't going anywhere. But Nix has been through this hell before, she knows the dangers that exist and she can't afford to cost Max his life. It's a push and pull of exactasy, love, passion, danger, and everything in between. These two are in for a doozie.

I will fully admit, Lexi Ryan has always written with a seedy underbelly to her characters past, but this one actually forced me to read with the light on. It got a little scary! I mean yay her for sucking me in so completely to her story, but it gave me CHILLS! The mystery/danger part aside though, Max and Nix just called to my heart. They so deserved every ounce of happiness they got and I was thrilled to experience it, it was long overdue. I will say one tiny disappointing factor was the lack of Claire, Max's daughter! I definitely wanted to see the new family dynamic and Nix and Claire interact with one another. It could have called for some VERY cute moments, but given the turn the story took, it was also heartwarming the decision Max made about Claire, and Nix's concern for her as well. I definitely wouldn't complain about a wedding for them though and a little side chapter about their life down the road. Playing with Fire is definitely a must-read and a keeper. I devoured it, and it's one of those books I wish never ended!

Happy Reading!

Phoenix like her name managed to in a way rise from the ashes and start her life new. She always remained on guard and it wasn't till recently she managed to feel comfort at the point that she is in, it also helped that Max Hallowell is showing a bit of interest. Knowing it can't happen but could'nt help it both end up hooking up only for that night they find it hard to fight the attraction. On the side Phoenix's past seemed to be haunting her once more causing her to feel like shes being watched getting paranoids that her past is gonna get her. Not feeling safe in her own home she seeks a bit of comfort in Max's house but things start to heat up.

Bravo, another great book from Lexi Ryan. I've been following along with her other fantastic books which include the Here and Now Trilogy and Reckless and Real Trilogy. I loved that these books relate in a way where even if you finished off a trilogy I still get to seem brief glimpse of past character. Another thing that I love about this book which I'm going to assume at the Love Unbound series are all so different and unique in a way. I've never come across a author that has a series of books with such different backgrounds. I don't how how to explain that so here goes. What I mean is that I've read many books that pretty much come out the same, just different name a slightly different drama/situation and in the end love. The books in this series are highly detailed where you can almost forget that these are characters in a book and not actual people. Plus the drama that unfolds will keep you guessing.

On to the book! I loved getting to know Phoenix and Max's story. I've known about Max from the Here and Now trilogy and I was hoping that he would get his HEA. I was about to mention more when I realized I might spoil the other books. I loved getting to know more about him after the whole Hanna situation. I thought Phoenix's story was fascinating with her past, definatly not something I've come across before which made it that much more interesting. As always you got the mix of unpredictable drama, steamy scenes and a bit of romance to keep things interesting. Overall this was a fantastic book and I look forward to seeing more.

Both Max and Nix are familiar characters to anyone who has read any of Lexi’s Unbound series. And while I didn’t necessarily like Max so much in Lost in Me (the first book I read with these characters) and neither did Nix, my opinion of him changed as that truth came out and I watched his hurt after losing Hanna. By the time Hanna’s trilogy was over, Max seemed so sweet and chivalrous that my heart broke for him in his own heartbreak.

Nix has been hiding a whole life outside of New Hope that she fears and those fears drive a lot of her decisions, including the decision to not let any man into her life ever again. As her past comes to light, and comes back to threaten her and those around her, I couldn’t help but become more sympathetic towards the usually closed-off doctor.

I don’t understand what it is that she wants or what she’s afraid of, but I do understand this -- our connection, our kiss, and how damn good it feels to hold someone again.

But the Max that wanted to break down Nix’s walls was such a different man from that sad, broken man and I couldn’t help but love him more. He has the chivalrous, knight-in-shining-armor things going for him, but he is also immensely protective, and develops a bit of a caveman side when it comes to Nix and her safety.

These two connected in a way that I hadn’t seen coming. Nix was adamant whenever the subject of her future that she would remain single. But she hadn’t counted on Max’s determination, nor on his ability to work his way behind her walls. I loved watching her come to depend on him, and they way she fit so easily into his life with Clare.

This was exciting, tense, and once I started reading I could not put it down. The group of family and friends that has been developed in New Hope surrounds Max and Nix, and I love the little bits readers continue to get from the established couples while keeping the focus on the main storyline. And Cade’s epilogue sets up intrigue about the woman he falls for and made me wish I could get my hands on his story immediately.

Max on a Stallion -- hell ya!!!!!

My heart broke for Max when Hanna picked Nate, the whole time I was reading the Here and Now series I went back and forth between team Max and team Nate. I can rest easy now, knowing that Hannah made the right choice because her and Max really didn’t belong together. I absolutely love Max and Nix together!

I have loved the character of Dr. Phoenix Reid from the minute she was introduced to us in the prior New Hope books. Her character, while quiet, always made me chuckle with her spunk and funny one-liners throughout the other books. I won’t lie, the skeletons in her closet are down right fucking scary! Her past freaked me out through the entire book, but her struggle and the way she handled it was fabulously written by Ms. Ryan! Although there were plenty of times in this story where I kinda wanted to jump in and shake some sense into her – I mean c’mon beautiful, swoon worthy Max Hallowell is knocking on your door and you turn him away?!

“I’m not looking to rescue anyone, he says softly. But if you’re the one who needs saving, I’m happy to invest in a stallion and learn how to ride.”

Max Hallowell is the prince we watch in fairytales as little girls and the Knight in Shining Armor we pray for as we get older. His character has certainly matured since we first met him and if possible I think he got a little sweeter! I saw him in a whole new light in this book though I have to say he became much more sexier and damn, who knew he had the ability to talk so dirty…. can we say melt your panties HOTT?! ☺

“I’ve fantasized about this since the first time, he whispers, his voice husky against my ear. I’ve thought about how you’d look under the spray, imagined these fucking perfect legs wrapped around me as I fucked you.”

Not only do we get the great love story of Max and Nix in this book, but we are reunited with all of our favorite New Hope characters that I personally cannot ever get enough of! We also meet a couple new characters, one in particular I can’t wait to learn more about. Bring on Holding Her Close! Thanks again for an awesome read, Lexi Ryan, you never disappoint me!

Original Review @ Naomi’s Reading Palace

I have read the previous two series by Lexi Ryan (Here & Now and Reckless & Real), and knew I wanted to read more of her work… ESPECIALLY Max’s story, because I love him! I was so excited to see him hook up with the good doctor, Nix, but I don’t think I realised how difficult her story was going to be!

Max, well I met him in Here & Now and loved him in that series. He was sweet and kind, and really did everything he could to win the girl. In Playing with Fire, he still has those traits, but he is also a father too, and although I didn’t see him with Claire that often, I could see that she was his world and he’s willing to do anything for her. He’s a determined man too, and I could see him pursuing Nix, despite how hesitant she was.

Nix, well she has a dark history, and details were revealed throughout the story. Her past was really heartbreaking and I could see why she had grown into the woman she is now. Nix found it hard to let people in, afraid that they would abandon her, because that has happened before. But slowly she did reveal her secrets because of the danger she was in.

I really liked Max and Nix’s story. They are good together and showed that they are stronger together than apart. Max has always been a guy a girl can rely on, and he showed that trait time and time again. I enjoyed how the fire element tied into Nix’s past and the significance of her name. Playing with Fire was a sizzling, but suspense filled read and I was left happy for them in the end. I love how Lexi continues to pull me into her world and how much I fall for each of the characters. The epilogue and glimpse into the next book kept me wanting more! I want more Cade NOW!

I felt that this latest story from New Hope was quite different from Lexi Ryan’s previous novels set in this town – it had an element of mystery and danger in it. I thoroughly enjoyed the unravelling of the enigma that is Phoenix Reid. Plus, in Hanna’s story (Here and Now Trilogy), Max was very much the underdog and he came across as a bit weak next to Nate, however, his beautiful soul really shines through in Playing With Fire.

Phoenix/Nix is a doctor who came to New Hope a few years previously and is very much a part of the Thompson sisters gang. Although little is known about her past, she is well-liked and has proven to be a solid friend.

Max has been hurt and hugely unlucky in love in the past. He has finally moved on and is settled into life as a business owner and single father, and is ready for love, again.

A favour for Nix turns into one hot encounter. Max gently pursues her but Nix cuts him off at every turn. She has her reasons. She carries physical and emotional scars from a complex past and is running scared from something. She is afraid to involve Max in her mess, as well as face the possibility of him turning his back on her when he finds out the truth about her previous life.

I want to leave this review as spoiler-free as possible, so what I will say is that Nix and Max are fab together. Max is such a knight in shining armour – he is patient, caring and valiant. He has a beautiful soul, packaged in a beautiful exterior. He’s a fantastic dad and a fantastic friend. He absolutely deserves his happy ending. Nix has known little real happiness in her life. She has run away from a very troubled and frightening past to make a new life in New Hope, but is now feeling threatened by unseen forces.

This was a terrific story with elements of danger, intrigue, passion and true love. Thoroughly recommended!!

A Review of Playing With Fire by Lexi Ryan

The Phoenix always rises - 5+++ stars

Lexi has done it again. This is the first book of a new series, but with some of the characters that we already know. We caught a little glimpse of Nix and Max together in Sam and Lexi's book, so I was really excited to see where this went. Even though we 'knew' Nix from previous books, there was a lot about her that we didn't know. Everyone has their own hang-ups and pasts that they want to forget, but sometimes it seems like we are doomed to re-live those times we would rather forget ever happened.

After everything that happened with Hanna, Max is finally ready to move on with his life and 'date' again. One night of passion with the hot Doc was enough for him to realize that he wanted more with her, but unfortunately, Nix is running scared. She avoids relationships because she has been badly hurt in the past, which she never talks about with anyone in New Hope.

Does Max just have a savior complex or do his feelings for Nix go deeper? Can Nix let go of her past and move on with one of the good guys? There are a lot of twists and turns in this book that kept me on the edge of my seat for the majority of the book, but that's what makes Lexi's writing so AMAZING. She draws you in and doesn't let go of you until you read that last page. I would definitely recommend this new series to anyone that has ever read any of her New Hope books. You will NOT be disappointed!

Another brilliant tale from the New Hope folks. Lexi Ryan has a very easy writing style that draws you into the book, so you almost feel your part of the story.
This book is Max and Phoenix story, if you’ve read the other New Hope books you will already know these two, but you can still fully enjoy the book without reading the other.(But you really should read them as they are awesome.)
I will confess now that Max has always been one of my favorite characters, he a super nice guy, but still HOT as hell, what’s not to like. Max has had his share of Heartache and crappy stuff happen to him, so I was super happy when he got his own book.
It’s hard to revue this book without giving too much away but here goes:
Phoenix (Nix) & Max are part of the same crowd and Nix is on Max’s radar, then one good deed visit leads to a hot and passionate episode that changes everything.
Max wants more but Nix has a secret from her past that she does intend to share and leaves her unwilling to make a commitment to anyone.
As the story evolves we learn more about Nix’s past and there are a few twist and turns in the story you don’t see coming, can’t tell you much more but you will love how the story unfolds and find out if Nix lets Max be her hero. I loved every part of the story and was sad when it finished.

I LOVE Lexi Ryan's stories..these characters centered around the town of New Hope have become a must read series..each successive story building upon this group of friends that I have such a vested interest in. They are like visiting with family.

Playing with Fire is Max and Nix's story. After everything happened with Max and Hanna, I wanted this man to finally get his happy.

I won't reveal anything of the plot and story line of this book but I want to say that I LOVE how Lexi writes mystery and suspense mixed with the romance in this book. It kept my heart beating as I tried to come up with theories of what was happening when Nix's past comes back to haunt her.

I adore Max! What is there not to love about this single dad?! I fell in love with him a little more in this story seeing his relentlessness, his protectiveness - he is the ultimate good guy.

What I love most about Ms. Ryan's stories are the way she can write about different things...it's not always the same story, there is always uniqueness in the story and with the characters that keeps her books fresh and fun...Ms. Ryan has found a forever fan in me.

While this wasn't my favorite in the series, I am happy that Max got the HEA he deserved. And I am SO EXCITED to hopefully get a story for Cade!
