I received an ARC of Zoe York's Fall Back in exchange for an honest review. It is just one of the stories in this excellent bundle. I will review the rest of the stories as I read them!

Fall Back (SEALs Undone #6): The first and most important thing you should know about this story is that it is overwhelmly emotional. Not in your typical, that's a sad moment emotional, but the story itself is emotionally charged. When I was reading this story, I felt this overwhelming longing ... I couldn't quite put my finger on exactly what was causing it until I realized it wasn't any one thing or event. The story is electric, charged with emotion! The second thing you should know is that in my opinion, this is by far, Zoe York's best work yet. She exceeded my expectations with this novella length story. Exceeded because it doesn't read like a short story. It has depth and meaning and purpose beyond anything a short story can normally carry.

This is the story of Melissa Vincent and Cade Duncan. More aptly stated, this is the story of Melissa Vincent and the man who walked side by side with her on her journey of growth and discovery and ultimately love.

To say Melissa Vincent is emotionally 'closed-off' is an understatement. She's an only child with a very skewed perception of what relationships and love should be all about. No, that's not right ... she knows what it should be about, she just doesn't have a point of reference. Her parent's relationship was dysfunctional at best. Her father was nothing more than a sperm donor and she's never let anyone in close enough because of it. Until Cade .... Cade Duncan knew the minute he set eyes on Melissa, the prettiest girl he'd seen in a long time, that he needed a date with her. It wasn't smooth sailing getting to that date, but he got it ... and then some.

The story goes like this ... Melissa and Jared Sutter (her best friend's husband) were scheduled to fly to Hawaii to take part in an endurance race/challenge. But Jared becomes unavailable so Cade grabs on to this opportunity like his life depended on it. Because he knows there's a special girl under all that prickliness and this is his ticket to get to know this special girl. As I mentioned before, this book is more about Melissa than anyone or anything else. This endurance race is not just any race. It's both an opportunity to connect and a journey to discover for Melissa. You'll have to read for yourself the how and the why. But trust when I say this is not your ordinary short story.... it's short and sweet and packs a punch ike no other.

This is a story embroidered with feeling, hope. vulnerability, acceptance, trust, growth and love ... Easy ~ Beautiful Love :)

ARC provided by the Publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Hot romances and some action/suspense too. Ten short novellas by different authors, only one, Zara Keane, I have read anything by. I love reading the short books and will read some of these authors again. The books are listed in the order of best book first.

HER TREASURE HUNTER EX by Zara Keane - 5 stars

Adventure romantic-suspense, about Katy and Dex, former lovers and archeologists hired for a dive on the RMS Lusitania, but for very different reasons. They end up sharing a one bedroom apartment and finally come to terms with their feelings for each other. On the dive, someone is trying to kill Katy and no treasure is worth her life. Loved this one.

AMONG GALACTIC RUINS by Anna Hackett - 5 stars

This science fiction romantic-suspense is about Lexa, an heiress, astro-archeologist and trouble magnet, and Damon, head of security, mystery man (think James Bond)and arrogant ass. They really don't like each other to start, but come to respect and love each other as they search a distant planet for a lost Faberge egg and keep each other alive.

UNCHARTED by Anna Lowe - 5 stars

Action Adventure Romance with a female version of Indiana Jones. Julie is on her way to the Belize Caribbean coast for some R&R after a dig in Guatemala. She also is going to deliver a package from Professor Leeds to his pet charity, a convent and orphanage. One problem, for some reason the Belize cops are shooting at her. After losing them, Julie reconnects with Seth, the man who rocked her world for a week and disappeared. The guy certainly has some explaining to do. He just has to keep Julie alive to do it.

ULTIMATE ESCAPE by Lydia Rowan - 5 stars

Action Adventure Romance about Nola who gets dumped by her boyfriend and decided to have a vacation in Vietnam which turns out to be the adventure of her lifetime. On her flight Nola changes seats with a man who wanted to be near the restroom. When she arrives in Vietnam Cruz is on her. He thinks she is part of a trafficking operation, except he can't quite make himself believe that. Bad guys show up in her room and Cruz kills them. Nola does a near freak, but holds it together as they try to unravel this mess.

COVER ME by Leigh James - 5 stars

Action adventure Romance about two couples who go on a vacation to Mexico and wind up in the middle of an old plot for revenge. This short novella is related to other books and although the backstory is referenced, this plot stands on its' own.

THE DEVIL'S SET: JACKSON by Ember Casey - 4 stars

Action-adventure romance about Charlie, who leads a boring life and longs for adventure and Jackson a Treasure Hunter who loved her and left her to seek adventure. As a birthday gift Jackson gave Charlie an old atlas from an estate sale. Nine months later Jackson is back with trouble on his heels. It turns out that the atlas is the key to a treasure and the only way Jackson can get the atlas is to take Charlie too.

FALL BACK by Zoe York - 4 stars

SEAL romance about Cade and Mel. Very hot, bordering on erotic romance. Cade and Mel meet in the hospital room of a mutual friend and for Cade it is game on. Mel has commitment issues and wants nothing more than a fling. Not Cade's style. They find themselves on an endurance race in Hawaii that has significance to Mel. She lays a ghost to rest and finds happiness with Cade.

THE DUKE OF AMBRA By Lyn Brittan - 4 stars

Action Adventure Romance that reads like a James Bond (think Pierce Brosnin), except that Kent is supposed to be American and the Knights of Ambra are a treasure hunting operation. Elena is auditioning for a position in the organization. She was a member of the Swedish military until an injury cost her an eye. Kent is her partner for this mission and he comes home with the prize and the girl. Very good character development for a novella.

THE PIRATE CAPTAIN'S DAUGHTER by Ruby Lionsdrake - 3 stars

Science fiction romance, think Hans Solo and the Star Wars gang as futurist mercenaries. Ying is being auctioned as a bedroom slave at a station on the far reaches of the galaxy. Marat is on shore leave and is disgusted that his friend is even considering buying a slave. When the pirate, Wolf, bids on Ying, Marat bids too, but looses. So, he does what any self respecting mercenary would do, he steals her from Wolf. One problem, Ying didn't want to be freed, she was out to kill Wolf.

TAINTED PEARL by Sadie Haller - 2 star

Contemporary Romance BDSM Crap. Fans of Fifty Shades of Gray will love this one. Biddy is a rock star cum environmental activist. Doug is a filthy mouthed asshole camera operator. These two deserve each other. I sincerely hope they don't procreate. Oops, to late. If you are looking for an ending, sorry, this novella doesn't have one.

When Mel gets to the hospital she finds herself on the elevator with a very hot looking man, but flirting with some guy in a hospital elevator only to have to run off ,is out of the question .
Cade , noticed the gorgeous women in the elevator but she seemed in her own world and it turns out she is going to visit the same people ; Cade is helping out Jared , Cassie 's husband a neither navy seal. By taking over a trading mission for him so he can stay home with Cassie .
Cade , is not one to be put off , he convinces Jared to invite him over to diner when he gets back and to make sure Mel is their , so Cade can get a shot at asking her out!
Once Cade is back , Jared holds up his end of them bargain and Cade gets his shot at asking Mel out , and more he works his way into taking Jared place as a running partner in a race I the Hawiann Islands .
Though Mel. Is determined to keep their relationship as friends only, Cade is persistent. At trying to discover more about Mel, working toward that relationship, even offering to trade Orgasims for information.

Cade is all Alpha male and Mel finally comes around to be taken care off , she has her reasons for being skittish and not very good at the whole relationship thing, but Cade breaks through !

What I like about anthologies is that I can read something from an author I haven't read before and this anthology is packed with the type of romance suspense I like. Since there were a few authors that I wanted to check out, I decided to give Romancing the Alpha a try with its ten novellas. It's a steal at 99¢.

I haven't read all the stories in this anthology yet, but I've read a few and here are my thoughts.

I am a fan of Zara Keane's Ballybeg series, so Her Treasure Hunters Ex made this a one-click for me, and I was glad I did. I always love my trips to Ballybeg courtesy of Zara Keane's series, and this one was suspenseful and sexy with a second chance storyline between the main characters. Kate and Dex broke up months ago, and it's very clear that they aren't done with each other. I loved Dex's earnest way of talking to Katy and her response to it. It's a lovely story, with a lot of significance as it takes place against the backdrop of a historical event, the sinking of the Lusitania. There is a lot to like about this story, and it's a perfect follow-up after Sean and Clio's story. If you haven't been reading this series, this story might just lure you into the charm of small coastal town of Ballybeg and its sometimes quirky and adorable inhabitants.

Fall Back by Zoe York was really Mel's story, as she prepares to honor her mother by repeating an endurance race in Hawaii. When her partner can't make it at the last minute, she agrees to let Cade go with her, knowing full well that she's attracted to him. Nature takes its course... and there are some sweet moments here, as well as a very determined ex-Seal who's ready to settle down. Nicely done.

Cover Me by Leigh James was another exciting story, that was more suspense than fun, since the main characters get in some deep trouble in Mexico and it takes some effort to get out of it. This story puts the women in danger and it even though the husbands are ex-military, I loved that it was a joint effort between the ladies and men to get out of danger. This wasn't a damsel in distress story, but a damsel-get-herself-out-of-distress story and I loved how the women in the story were empowered. I might even have to read more about Liberty, cause seriously, she showed a lot of strength in this novella.

I enjoyed all three of the novellas I read from this anthology and I think that's a great sign that it was worth the purchase. If you like action and romance together, this might be the deal of the day for you.

I haven't finished reading all the stories within this boxset, but once I've finished reading them, I'll add a little review.
I received an ARC of Anna Lowe's 'Uncharted' in exchange for an honest review.

Fall Back (SEAL's Undone series, book 6)
by Zoe York
I found myself quickly lost within this quick read, enjoying the chemistry between Zoe & Cade as they ready themselves for Zoe's last chance to feel connected to her mother... I'm off to see what other books Zoe has in this series.

The Pirate Captain's Daughter (a Mandrake Company series novel)
by Ruby Lionsdrake
This was the first time I'd read anything from Ruby & all I can say is that I LOVED this book, so much so that I have just brought book 1 of the series & plan to purchase the rest when I can.

Her Treasure Hunter Ex (Ballybeg Bad Boys, book 1)
by Zara Keane
What an introduction to a new author, not only is this action packed, it's also steamy filled to the brim with information. This is the first book in the "Ballybeg Bad Boys" series, but I intend to read the "Ballybeg" series.

Among Galactic Ruins
by Anna Hackett

Uncharted (Serendipity Adventure Romance, book 1)
by Anna Lowe
What a fast paced story this was, I quickly found myself emersed in the story of Julie & Seth. Julie thinks she's about to enjoy some down time from work, she just has to make a quick detour, but soon finds herself in trouble. Her mind takes her to the 1 place she doesn't want to be & back to the 1 person she didn't want to see.... Such an amazing short story, I'm in love with Anna's work, I especially loved how Julie is the Indiana Jones of the story.

Fall Back Zoe York 4* read 11/18/17-11/19/17 121 pp
It was one of the more enjoyable books in the SEALs Undone series. I liked both MCs and their story appeared all in all realistic. I struggled with the fast development of the relationship during the race and the unusual number of typos, missing words or other errors.
I'm looking forward to the next story in this series :-)
If ever Amazon provides an updated re-editied file I'll change the rating to 5*.

Her Treasure Hunter Ex Zara Keane ?* dnf? 168 pp
11/19/17: I read today the first four chapters of the book and I'm pretty dissapointed. The story reads like a continuation of an already existing book. I checked the Ballybeg series and I'm not sure if the character were part of any of the previous books - if it's the case I wish there were a note or mentioned in the blurb so all readers like me who prefer to read such stories in order have a chance to do so. As of now I'm not sure I'll continue with this book or series in the next future. Should I finish the book I'll update this review.

This is a review of Among Galactic Ruins by Anna Hackett

This book was a fun read. Lexa was not a wussy, whiny, "I need to be taken care of" heroine. Yeah, she had daddy issues, but in the end she overcame them. I loved the fact that Damon was such a blunt person. When he wanted something he didn't try to sugarcoat it he just come straight out and tell Lexa what he wanted and which position. Also, Dathan was a little Sh*t! I loved it!! It was a great read!!

Zoe York — FALL BACK
Cade he's not a man to wait he's all about making things happen, “sure. I’m gonna get going. But when I get back…invite me over for dinner, okay? And maybe her at the same time?” Cade he takes everything literal and he's reactions are amusing, “I thought we were taking a nap together?” Well, hello, rested Mel. His ***k swelled at the dirty promise in her voice—" Sometimes Cade has to be the adult and remind his woman of things, "Jesus. She was going to get him all worked up just before their timed start. “Can’t run with a hard-on, beautiful.” I liked this quick little read Cade is a persistent man and I liked that.
Ruby Lionsdrake — THE PIRATE CAPTAIN'S DAUGHTER
Marat is starting to feel things and I always like seeing a man question himself, "was that insulting? To imply he expected a Chinese woman to cook Chinese food? And why was he all of the sudden finding himself acting awkwardly?" Ying has to have patience with her man and coax him into things, “and I’m sure we’re both stiff and sore after our respective battles,” Ying added. “We may need to help each other clean the hard-to-reach places.” This book was okay to me it had more action then romance and everyone knows I prefer my romance to action lol.
Zara Keane — HER TREASURE HUNTER EX
Katy is one of those women who goes after what she wants and.speaks her mind, “come on, Dex. No-strings sex. That part, at least, was always good between us. We’ve been dancing around one another all day like animals in heat." Once you let Dex's animal side out there's no stopping the man, “sounds like we are.” His erection strained against his trousers and his breath came in short staccato bursts. “Let’s work on the getting naked part first.” This book I loved Dex and Katy just needed a little push to make things right.
Anna Hackett — AMONG GALACTIC RUINS
Damon sometimes has body control issues where he gets aroused at the wrong times, "S***. He shifted. That was all he needed, an erection while riding this shaggy monster." I loved the playful side of Damon, “you poke that out again and I’ll find a better use for it.” She stilled, her eyes widening. Then she poked her tongue out at him again." Damon is straight and to the point, "he grabbed her. “Lexa, I’m too old for games. When we get somewhere safe, I want you naked. I’m going to spread your legs, suck on your clit until you come, and then eff your brains out.” Damon is seriously a caveman but secretly I think Lex loves it because I know I do, "he hauled her up and over his shoulder. “Hey!” She slapped a hand against his very bare and very fine a**." I loved this book Damon was a dream and I just loved him.
Ember Casey — THE DEVIL'S SET: JACKSON
Jackson's behavior suggests that he's not over his woman, "she suspected her body might also be reacting to the way Jackson had suddenly stepped closer, right up against her side. He’s jealous, she realized. Or, if not quite that, then at least a little possessive of her." This was an alright read at times I was more interested in Leo than Jackson and his girl.
Anna Lowe — UNCHARTED
Seth can get all caveman in zero to sixty seconds, "the man turned to Julie next, and every instinct in Seth blazed. Kill man. Protect woman. Protect his home."
Sadie Haller — TAINTED PEARL
Doug is so dang talented and sexy things just fall right off him, “the condom broke. Eff, it more than broke, it effing disintegrated.” Jesus Doug is so damn talented he makes his woman pass out, “it’s either that, or I effed you to sleep. And we both know that didn’t happen.” Erm... did this end on a cliffhanger? Is there going to be more of the story?
Lyn Brittan — THE DUKE OF AMBRA
Kent can be a little dramatic, “it’s fifty damned degrees, and I’m standing on the side of a mountain crying in front of a woman who yells at me. Not cool.” It's obvious that Kent thinks the world revolves around him, just like a typical male, "Kent dropped another branch over the car’s hood and peered inside. “Day dreaming about me again?” This book is the third in a serious but can be read as a stand alone which I love because no cliffhanger and each book has a different couple.
Lydia Rowan — ULTIMATE ESCAPE
Nola I think she handles herself well in her situation only a minor little freak out, “so I’m likely a fugitive wanted for murder by the police and for who knows what by God knows who else, and we’re going to go sightseeing?”
Leigh James — COVER ME
I just couldn't get into this novella it just didn't hit my fancy, which upset me because I generally can get into almost any book I read.

Since each story/book has a synopsis before them, I'm just going to give my opinion of each... some might contain spoilers! All in all I enjoyed 5 out of the 10 stories enough to want to check out other books by those authors, so not too bad for a $.99 book.

1. Fall Back by Zoe York - This was the 4th book in a series, but I doubt I'll try the rest of them. It was okay - the sex scenes were amazing - but there was hardly any conflict except Mel's sharing hangup and it was never explained why she even had it, Cade just melted her into goo and she opened right up!

2. The Pirate Captain's Daughter by Ruby Lionsdrake - This was set in the Mandrake Company universe and honestly the reason I paid $.99 for the collection that it's in. It was definitely a good story. Ms. Lionsdrake can write a very hot adventure romance.

3. Her Treasure Hunter Ex by Zara Keane - This was okay, but not really long enough for me or realistic enough. And there's something about the illegality of it - treasure hunters who are supposed to be working for museums, etc who are actually in it just to see what they can steal to make money - that doesn't do it for me. I want the main characters to be rough and tough, but moral and this story didn't deliver on that.

4. Among Galactic Ruins by Anna Hackett - Now this one was much better, I didn't like Lexa, the female character, at first, but she didn't stay as annoying as she started out. The story progressed pretty quickly and I would have liked it to be a little more fleshed out, but all in all I'm willing to try out some of the author's other books and signed up for her newsletter.

5. The Devil's Set: Jackson by Ember Casey -Nope, didn't enjoy this one very much. It was okay, but again with the treasure hunter thing, apparently I'm not into treasure hunters... Plus the way this one ended was obviously to hook the reader into the rest of the series, well guess what? You write a good enough book and you don't need that much of a hook to get the reader's wanting more.

6. Uncharted by Anna Lowe - This wasn't bad... but it also didn't blow me away. I liked that both the main characters were strong people, that they were able to lean on each other, and the sex was good (actually the sex has been pretty well written in all the books so far) but it just lacked something for me, not sure what exactly.

7. Tainted Pearl by Sadie Haller - And this one I absolutely hated! I'm okay with BDSM stories (okay not full bore BDSM, but when it's on the lighter side I can get into it), but even though this was light enough for me there was no emotion written between the two main characters and for me there needs to be more of a connection before I can enjoy it - plus the end came without any resolution to the story line and was obviously written that way to get the reader to purchase the next in the series.

8. The Duke of Ambra by Lyn Brittan - This was an okay read and I'm pretty sure I'll be checking out other books by this author. But sometimes I found it a little hard to follow the conversations between the main characters and I think it's because the author had them talking like they'd known each other for a long time, so there was a subtext that I had to figure out, but all in all I enjoyed it. I really am a sucker for strong women and men characters who appreciate the strength in each other.

9. Ultimate Escape by Lydia Rowan - I enjoyed this one, just again wishing it had been fleshed out more. It seemed really short and makes me wary of paying for the author's other books considering they'll probably be short too and I just want a little more out of my romantic adventure stories (Don't call it a book if it's really a novella!!!!) I do want to find out what happens with the other male characters that were in this one, so Ms. Rowan did a good job setting that hook!

10. Cover Me by Leigh James - Eh, this was okay, but at least it was described correctly as an installment in the series. I just wasn't taken with Liberty who's the main character of that series, she was okay, but just not my cup of tea.

This collection of adventure romances has something for everyone , and is sure to delight readers who are looking for a little action to go with their romance. The following is a review for three of the stories in the collection.

Fall Back - Zoe York

In this fun and sexy story, Mel's partner for an endurance race has to drop out when his wife's pregnancy gets a little tense, but his drop dead gorgeous friend Cade is more than willing to fill in. Mel's got secrets though, and she's a bit on the prickly side but Cade is determined to get through the wall she surrounds herself with and find the real woman inside.

I've really enjoyed the other SEAL stories from this author (each is standalone) and since I happen to be a big fan of these kinds of fitness adventures I loved the combination. Cade is a friendly, competent and strong competitor and he wastes no time in letting Mel know that he's up for a little bedroom action too, if she is. Truth be told though, he's a relationship kind of guy and he sees in Mel someone he'd like to know for the long haul. Mel on the other hand is a more reserved and quiet person, and not used to the kind of attention Cade shows her. The chemistry is there between them from the start but I liked that Cade let Mel make the decision about whether to get more intimately involved. Their scenes together are super sexy and the story has a lovely happy ending.

Tainted Pearl - Sadie Haller

This sexy tale is the story of Biddy, a rock star who takes a break from the band to join an eco-activist group for a month and Doug, one of the cameramen who goes from one assignment to the next, this time at the same place where Biddy is. They hit it off, but what will happen when their time is up?

Well, this one is a bit tricky to review because I felt like the blurb didn't prepare you for the fact that it's a story that is obviously just the first part as it ends with no HEA or HFN, but with plot threads dangling. Hopefully there will be a conclusion to the story available soon. Although Doug doesn't really appeal to me personally as a hero (he has sex on the brain from the first time he meets Biddy and was a bit on the crude side for me) Biddy seems quite happy to have his attention and they have no problem burning up the sheets in some sexy scenes together. I enjoyed the setting, it was quite unique in location and idea and made for an interesting background.

Her Treasure Hunter Ex - Zara Keane

When given the opportunity to do a little underwater treasure hunting with a payoff to help with her mom's medical bills, Katy is all in. But when she discovers her ex-fiance Dex is also on the payroll and will be on the expedition with her (and is her new roommate!) will they rekindle the flame or put out the fire for good?

I really enjoyed this story! It's the first I've read by this author and definitely won't be the last. I'm a big fan of underwater archaeology thrillers (Clive Cussler is a favourite author of mine) so having the setting of this story as the wreck of the Lusitania and the treasure hunting plotline, combined with a reunited lovers trope was a winner for me. The setting was obviously well researched, with the history of the sunken ship and the detailed description and knowledge of what's involved in deep sea diving. As well, there is definite chemistry between Katy and Dex and they share some steamy scenes together as they reconnect. I liked how they were honest with each other about what broke them apart and that they were at a place where they could give themselves a second chance. There was a great action plot to go with the romance, and the story flowed at an exciting pace. Definitely a keeper!

Romancing the Alpha: An Action-Adventure Romance Boxed SetZoe York et al.

Reviewed by SFF Dragon

'Among Galactic Ruins'. Like Indiana Jones meets Star Wars. A treasure hunt with a steamy romance and HEA for good measure. I loved it.

I haven't got the boxset, so my review is for only one of the stories, 'Among Galactic Ruins' is a prequel novel in the Phoenix Adventures series by Anna Hackett and I was given this copy by the author in exchange for an honest review. This book hooked me on the first page and I got so absorbed by the story I couldn't put it down. I absolutely loved it and it made me laugh. This is one of those books I will read again and again. I'm sure the other books in this set will be equally good.

I've read and really enjoyed a lot of books by this author, but I haven't read any of the Phoenix Adventures, and because her series' are all so different from each other I had no pre-conceptions about what this story would be like, nothing to compare it to from other stories in the series, but as I read the book, all sorts of things popped into my memory, from Raiders of the Lost Ark to Star Wars to The Last Crusade.

This action packed Sci-Fi adventure with a little romance and a few steamy bits on the side, was like a female Indiana Jones in space with high-tech gadgets, searching for a long lost Earth treasure and overcoming obstacles and dangers, on a crime ridden desert planet that reminded me vividly of Tatooine, right down to the description of the Spaceport, but that's were the Star Wars similarities end.

From the planet Econia in the Central Systems, the youngest of six children, only daughter and an heiress to one of the largest fortunes in the galaxy, 30 year-old Astro-Archeologist Alexa Carter is a big disappointment to her father, Baron, owner of Carter Interstellar Enterprises, who doesn't approve of her working. He allowed her to play at studying whilst he and her mother, Cassandra, groomed her to be a good little trophy wife for one of the sons of the five richest galactic families in some sort of business alliance. And instead...she's carved out a career as an astro-archeologist and Curator of the Durend Museum on Zeta Volantis, the biggest private museum in the galaxy.

Now she's off on an adventure in the Exodus quadrant, on the desert planet of Zerzura, the most dangerous place in the galaxy, following a map and clues she found on an ancient vase, in search of a priceless Faberge Egg brought to Zerzura in antiquity by people fleeing the Terran War. But her employer, Marcus Durend, has sent along a bodyguard to protect her, the museum's Head of Security, Damon Malik, a man rumoured to have been some sort of super-secret military operative. They dislike each other from day one, but things change along the way and there is a HEA for these two strong characters. They also have a guide, the young Dathan Phoenix, treasure hunter in training. I could go on and on about this book, but that would only spoil it for you. I really loved it and am adding the rest of the Phoenix Adventures books to my wish list. I would love to give it a lot more than the five stars allowed here.

I will be adding reviews to this post as I complete the books. The overall star rating will reflect the average of the books read to date, and is subject to change. Stay tuned!

Fall Back by Zoe York (one star)

This book was a snack of cheesy popcorn: light, unsubstantial, a little salty and full of cheesy lines. You know how you go see what you think is going to be a great comedy movie because the previews were so good, then you watch the movie and realize that all the funniest lines were in the 30-second preview? I am feeling a little bit this way after reading the first installment of this anthology. The collection has been out for 13 days, contains 655 pages, and in less than two weeks has accumulated 175 ratings for an average of a whopping 4.8 on a 5.0 scale on Amazon.

So I hope Zoe York was doing a service to the rest of the authors in this collection and getting the cheesy lines out of the way first. Here is the cheddar: "Shifting out of the way so he could press the button for his floor, she performed the little inventory she did on all hotties, because she wasn't dead inside." Let's add a little extra butter: "So he wanted her to dig deep and find some feelings. She could do that. Even if it gave her hives." Finally, pour on the salt: "He'd slap the sweet little ass, currently flexing beside his head and drive himself so far inside her, the word friend would permanently be erased from the record of their relationship." Ugh. 'Nuff said.

The Pirate Captain's Daughter by Ruby Lionsdrake (3 stars)

Thankfully I read the afterword of this novella when I was finished because Ruby Lionsdrake apologizes for writing a non-alpha hero for an anthology entitled "Romancing the Alpha." She recognized it, and so did I. Space firefighter Marat Azarov is a nice guy mercenary, on leave with Sergeant Striker, who also calls himself Chief of Boom (think Adam Baldwin's gun-toting dunderhead Jayne Cobb from Firefly). Striker is one of the recurring characters providing comic relief throughout Lionsdrake's Mandrake Company sci-fi romance series, and here he appears again, leading our hero Marat straight down the path of....well, he's not exactly sure where, but this basement room with the naked women and an auctioneer doesn't sound promising. It appears Striker wants his buddy to co-bid on a slave, who maybe can be a cook on their ship and do some "baking" for the boys on the side. Turns out Marat has a little bit of a hero complex and things quickly get complicated when he steals sassy siren Ying Wei away from the villainous space pirate who has just purchased her.

Ying and Marat have adventures, plus a few favorite characters from the Mandrake Company materialize. This book seemed a little shorter than Lionsdrake's other series novellas. The adventure was simplified and limited to just a few days on one space station. Ying, though, is on a mission, and Marat is getting in the way. He doesn't personify alpha in his demeanor or his control of the situation. Don't get me wrong, he is a competent, smart, brave, moral man....just not alpha. I liked him, but for the expectations of this anthology crowd, he might not be enough. Ying, on the other hand, keeps up the standard Lionsdrake has for creating tough-as-nails, savvy heroines. She has some unexpected skills that propel the plot in an interesting direction.

**This review is for AMONG GALACTIC RUINS by Anna Hackett**

The Phoenix Adventures are back! Adventure, romance, astro-archeology, alien worlds, ancient artifacts and a teenage Dathan Phoenix! Colour me a very happy reviewer. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve been loving the Hell Squad series, but the Phoenix Adventures still hold my heart. It’s astro-archeology! And space! With extra cyborgs on occasion! And that’s enough exclamations from me. Let’s talk about this latest offering instead.

Lexa Carter may be a rich girl with daddy issues, but she’s also smart and brave and has made her own way in the universe – which has led her to a desert world in the back of beyond on the trail of a glorious Fabergé egg. I liked Lexa a lot. She’s strong and fearless and more than capable of taking care of herself. Okay, at first I thought she was being stubborn for the sake of being stubborn, but she’s had so many advantages in life that she also feels like she has a lot to prove and I liked her adventurous spirit.

As does Damon, the strong, sexy hero with a dark past that he doesn’t like to talk about and who has an in-depth knowledge of both security and combat. He’s a good match for Lexa, protective and just arrogant enough to breeze past her more imperious moments and go head-to-head with her stubbornness. They make an awesome team, complimenting each other’s abilities and willing to rush in to help whenever each of them needs it. I loved reading about them – and their scorching hot chemistry doesn’t hurt either.

The plot itself is an adventure with a whole heap of mystery as Lexa attempts to track down her lost treasure while Damon tries to keep her safe. I loved getting to see Dathan Phoenix in his younger days too – still as confident, but slightly less arrogant – and he added a nice break from the romance, as well as providing helpful hints and local guidance along the way without stealing the show from the main characters.

In all it’s fun and adventurous, romantic and exciting: everything I’ve come to both expect and want from a Phoenix Adventure. If you’re already a fan you should thoroughly enjoy this, but if you’re new and looking for a sci-fi romance series with space adventures, great characters and exciting action then this is a great place to start. I can’t wait to read whatever Anna Hackett has to offer up next.

I was provided ARC's of both Fall Back and Fall Dark by Zoe York and Her Treasure Hunter Ex by Zara Keane in exchange for an honest review. If the rest of the books in this collection are even half as good then this is a phenomenal deal that will provide lots of great reading.

Fall Back - This one is great because the Alpha male character is the strong, silent type without all the extra bossy that sometimes accompanies these types characters. He is calm, patient and really listens and observes everything that is going on so that he can be exactly what the female character needs. All too often alpha male roles are done really over the top and this one is quite different because you can still enjoy his strength without it taking anything away from the female character at all. The situation is unique and it's an overall great read.

Fall Dark - Now here's one where the alpha male character is a bit more along the lines of what you would be expecting but even then it's done in a great way. The main male character is sexy, cocky and in complete control at all times. The great thing about this book is that the female character is exactly the same and as a result sparks fly. The scenario is unique and the secondary characters add lots of good humor. The story line moves along quickly without sacrificing character development and connection.

Her Treasure Hunter Ex - I didn't realize it when I received this book but I'd read another book with some of the same secondary characters by this author. This book while containing some of the same characters was completely different and a wonderful surprise! The premise was interesting and the author provided just enough detail to help you learn a bit about treasure hunting and deep sea diving without it feeling like you were reading a text book. The characters were interesting and there's plenty of mystery packed into this short book. It really felt like a much longer book with a great story line but the pace was quick and kept you interested throughout. I really do need to read more of this author's books - I am always pleasantly surprised and enjoy them from beginning to end.

All in all another great effort by Zoe York and Zara Keane! I look forward to reading the rest in this collection!

This anthology is an amazing value and collection of great novellas by best selling authors of romantic adventure. Most are standalone and left me wanting more. It is a must buy!!

1. Fall Back, book four in the SEALs Undone series, by Zoe York. A great standalone set in Hawaii.
2. The Pirate Captain's Daughter, a Mandrake Company adventure, by Ruby Lionsdrake. This is a great standalone in the sci-fi romance series. A related book, Mercenary Instinct, is available for free. I will definitely be reading it and looking into other books by Lionsdrake.
3. Her Treasure Hunter Ex, Ballybeg Bad Boy Series, Book One, by Zara Keane. Set in fictitious Ballybeg, County Cork, Ireland, this highly entertaining reunion story is based on an actual event that occurred in 1915 and contributed to the US's entry into WWI.
4. Among Galactic Ruins, The Phoenix Adventures, Book One, by Anna Hackett. This is a great romantic sci-fi series opener and a standalone. Set in the distant future, museum curator and her security chief set out to find a Fabrege' egg on a hostile desert planet.
5. The Devil's Set: Jackson, by Ember Casey. A group of treasure hunters are on the trail of a missing fortune, but they aren't the only ones. This is a great series opener and standalone.
6. Uncharted, Serendipity Adventure Romance, Book One, by Anna Lowe. **A copy of this book was received in return for an honest review**This is a well written contemporary adventure romance set in the Caribbean. Julie has finished an archeological dig in Guatamala and has been asked by her professor to drop off a package at a convent orphanage in Belize on her way back to the States. Big mistake!!
7. Tainted Pearl, by Sadie Haller. Very good opener, but not a standalone. Not even a happy for now and the follow up is ??? As good as it is, I would have skipped this one if I'd known it is a serial.
8. The Duke of Ambra, Mercenaries of Fortune, Book Three, by Lyn Brittan. This is a great standalone that left me wanting more of the series.
9. Ultimate Escape, a great standalone that hints at more to come, by Lydia Rowan.
10. Cover Me, from the Liberty Series, by A.J. Vale. This standalone is an adventurous romp through the Yucatan.

This book is packed with exciting novellas and novelettes (the ones I read were fully developed and much longer than regular short stories). I have read several of the stories and intend to read the others as time permits. Here's some of what's in store:

Zoe York — FALL BACK
I thought this was a fun and enjoyable read with likable main characters and a slightly different storyline. Cade and Mel fit together well but both had some fairly substantial baggage - especially Mel. I thought the writing was good and the story flowed well. This short book fit the bill for me for a lazy afternoon read.

Ruby Lionsdrake — THE PIRATE CAPTAIN'S DAUGHTER
I love scifi space adventures so this book really appealed to me. I could picture the slave market in my mind and loved that Marat wasn't going to let the mean, disgusting pervert get his grubby paws on the beautiful and brave Ying Wei, slave number 8. He daringly rescues her only to discover that she had other plans and did not appreciate his gallantry. Marat gets sucked into all sorts of trouble as a result, and the story takes off with action and adventure that twisted and turned and gave me a very satisfying read.

Anna Hackett — AMONG GALACTIC RUINS
I loved this archaeological adventure set on a backwater desert planet filled with dangerous animals, storms and ruffians. Lexa Carter is a kick-ass, independent woman driven to find a priceless relic. Daman Malik has been charged with her protection and he is not happy babysitting the headstrong Lexa. After hiring a young untested guide they set out on their journey but someone wants to sabotage the mission and keep the treasure hidden. With each setback, Lexa becomes more determined and Daman realizes that there is more to the spoiled archaeologist than he ever imagined. This was a fun addictive read that really took me by surprise.

This book was given to me in exchange for an honest review of at least 3 of the included books.

A boxed set you do not want to miss out on; exciting romantic stories that will have your heart-throbbing and wanting more. So sit back and relax and enjoy the enthralling journey of Romancing The Alpha.....

Uncharted by Anna Lowe-Book 1 in the Serendipity Adventure Romance series (a continuation of Julie & Seth’s story from Off the Charts). This book is steamy and full of unwanted life threatening incidents. Series are fantastic because you get to know and adore all the awesome characters and the characters in this series are powerful, sexy, exciting and full of surprises.

Anna’s talent truly shines with vivid descriptions of each scene as she transports readers into a world of adventure and romance…

Julie has just finished her research in Guatemala and is on her motorcycle headed back to Belize, when she realizes she is being chased and fired upon. She makes it to Belize unscathed, and is hiding out in the Coco Loco Café when Seth approaches her; The dudes chasing her, find her at the café, and now she is on her motorcycle with Seth fleeing for their lives…..

The characters are impressive and engaging, humor fabulous, the scenes enchanting, emotions high, secrets told, and earth-shattering heart-throbbing pulsating romance that will have you awe-struck.

Exciting and romantic; a well written story that had my undivided attention till the end. I laughed, shed a few tears and cheered too.. This story is full of action, and yes there is the hot steamy romance, but beneath the steam there lies true passion and sincerity, and the author portrays that with her gift of writing; an ending that will melt your heart.. Loved the story. {I was gifted this book in exchange for an honest review}. Without reservations I highly recommend this book, the author and of course the series.

"Fall Back" by Zoe York--Ms. York is a new-to-me author, and based on this offering I'll definitely be reading her again.

"Fall Back" is the story of Melissa Vincent, a girl raised by a single mother who has become leery of men and relationships and is determined to complete a Hawaiian endurance race as a last tribute to her mother who died of breast cancer several years before.

Cade Duncan, an "alpha male who wants to take care of everything", is a Navy SEAL and a friend-of-a-friend of Mel's. He's attracted to her and stays charming in spite of her prickliness and the six-foot-thick walls she's put up around herself. He manages to get himself invited along on her race, since it's a team event and Mel is short a team member. He does a manful job of trying to resist Mel's charms and remains respectful of her boundaries even while trying to convince her to tear them down.

In other words, he's one heck of a hero.

Of course resistance is futile, and before they head back home they're in a relationship. Clear evidence that Mel and I are sisters at heart and why we both think Cade's the perfect hero:
Waking up sucked.

"We can sleep in tomorrow, right?"

He just laughed at her.

"That was a serious question. If we're dating now, you need to understand how I feel about mornings."

"It's really cute that you think someone could spend one night with you and not figure that out." He sighed. "A bigger issue is going to be you realizing that I'm an unrepentant morning person."

"Uhm, hello? Painfully. Obvious. But you get out of bed so quietly. I've decided this means I just have a human coffee maker now. I embrace your morning personhood."
See what I mean? Can we clone him, maybe? ;)

Rating: 4 stars / A-

Fall Back
This was the first story I read simply because it was the first story and it was about a military guy. I have a uniform addiction and I’m not afraid to say it. LOL While I didn’t get to indulge my uniform issue, I did get to read a great short story. It was surprisingly well developed for a story this short. Bravo to the author, Zoe York, for knowing her stuff. If all short stories were this well-developed then I might read more of them rather than running screaming for the hills as soon as I see “Short story or novella”. Cade is a Seal and decided to help Melissa out when her partner for an endurance race has to stay home with his pregnant wife. I knew what was going to happen as soon as I started the story but it was still a nice read and very sweet with a nice smattering of hot sexy time thrown in.

The Devil’s Set: Jackson
I liked this story at the beginning of it and the middle was pretty good too. The ending did not do it for me. *sigh* How do you date someone and not know where they work/what they do for a job? That’s the first thing I would find out about someone if I had to be in the market ever again. I thought it was odd that Charlie just up and decided to go on a treasure quest when she has a job at an insurance agency and was in danger of losing her job because she made a mistake on an account. I was into the story when I was reading it, but thinking of how to write a review made me realize that a lot of the details just didn’t add up. I guess you just have to take it at face value and go on about your business. LOL

I freely admit that I love Alpha men and their lovely ladies. In my opinion, it takes an equally strong woman to love and let’s face it, put up with a true Alpha Male.

In Romancing the Alpha: An Action-Adventure Romance Box Set we get 10 stories of delectable Alpha Men and their strong women. And while I love getting multiple stories in one shot, I have to admit that I enjoy some stories more than others when picking up a box set. I’m sure that you feel the same way.

The cover description gives you an idea of each story – and this is not a review of each individual story in this set. I found these stories to be enjoyable. intense, at times funny and cute, and definitely always steamy and sexy. There were simply some that pushed my personal buttons more than others did in what I look for in a story. That is the reality of a box set but hey, I’m never going to turn one down just because I might not love every single one. I hope you don’t either.

So if you love a book bargain, if you adore Alpha Men and you enjoy good, entertaining romance novels then this boxed set is perfect for you. Pick it up and indulge. I would definitely recommend this collection for readers that love their romance with a touch of adventure.

Uncharted by Anna Lowe

This was a great continuation of Seth and Julie's story, whom we met in the prequel story, Off the Charts. Julie was treating herself to a weeklong birthday vacation when she meets Tobin. Who the heck is Tobin, you ask? Tobin is the epitome of the charming, I'll flirt with you, you'll fall for my facade, and we'll have a good time, type of guy that every woman has probably encountered at least once in their life. (Of course, there's more to him than appears and we'll get his full story in the next book.) As Julie is trying to politely make Tobin scram, Seth appears and gets his little brother to leave her alone. There's an instant spark between Seth and Julie and they explore it.

In Uncharted, the story picks up two months later as Julie has inadvertently been put in the middle of a dangerous situation. While she's literally on the run for her life, she runs into Seth. The man who stood her up for a date two months ago, the day before she had to leave, completely devastating her as she had thought they had something special. But, things aren't always as they seem and Seth had legitimate reasons for why he left. Plus, he hasn't stopped thinking about her since then and is in fact there hoping to see her again. Do they work things out? Do they stop the bad guys from hurting Julie? Why are the bad guys even after her? Does Julie believe Seth's explanation about why he left? Read the story and find out.

Zoe York is my "recovery" author. When I'm feeling sad or having an "ugly cry" for another book, I love going to her for the hot and sweet love story that gives me an HEA and is hot, hot, hot. We all want Zoe York characters to be our friends and lovers. These stories follow Navy Seals at a crossroads in their careers. Navy Seal relationships are difficult at best. They are typically men who face the daunting prospect of rarely being home, of putting themselves in danger most of us will never be able to even imagine, and have as many psychological barriers to a successful personal relationship as physical. These men all start out from a place of "no commitments" which makes them essentially thought of as players, bad boys. I always think every bad boy (or most) really is just looking for enough motivation to reform. Each couple in the Seals Undone series has cameos in the other stories, but these really are standalone. I am partial to reading them in order. As the 2 most recent stories released, I did a re-read from book 1.

Cade and Mel's story from Fall Back, Book 6 might have the hottest shower scene from any book anywhere. Left hand, Right nipple, bar piercing...tug, tug, tug. A little voyeurism. This one probably is best read in sequence, or at least read after Book 2. This has spoilers from Jared and Cassie's story if read out of sequence. ***fanning self***

These stories are totally worthy of being on your TBR list. I'd suggest a long weekend, a chaise lounge, an adult beverage of choice and 7 hot men.

This is only one story....I plan to read more.

Uncharted (Serendipity Adventure Romance, #1)
by Anna Lowe

After waking up to find Seth gone 2 months before, Julie goes back to work. What did it matter if he left without saying goodbye, it was just a holiday fling, thing.
Who does she think she's fooling? With her work done she is ready for another break before she gets started on her thesis. Soon after she crosses the boarder she is chased by gun-welding men in jeeps. She doesn't have a glue as to why. After losing them, she stops and finds out why. It isn't a gift in that box her professor asked her to take to an orphanage. Not knowing where to go, she finds herself in Santa Marta......where she is found again and not only by the gun-welding military men.

Seth hated leaving Julie the way he did, but he just didn't have a choice. They would have lost the boat if they hadn't gone back and moved it. One disaster lead to another and it took him a week to get back to where he left Julie.....but, as he already knew, she was gone. A few weeks later he makes a quick stop in Santa Marta, just one last look. He really didn't expect to she her, but there she is, in another bar, with another drink and gun toting military men chasing and shooting at her.

If you like a little mystery, seat gripping chase scenes, fast getaways and sex on the beach, you are going to love this book.

My review is for Fall Back by Zoe York. The Navy SEALs have such a wonderful network for their men to meet the women of their dreams, and it is no different in Fall Back. Cade is an intuitive character - even before he officially met Melissa, he could read her, or so he thought! What he is reading is her blocking herself off from feeling, or expressing those feelings. Melissa really is a bit neurotic and Cade is incredibly sensitive and empathetic towards that. Early on, in the narrative, we see that he has formed an immediate interest in her but senses that he has to be careful how he approaches her because she seems to spook easily. I like how, over time, Melissa is able to open up to Cade and tell him the secrets that she's holding in - because he has expressed that being open is important to him. He goes into this relationship with an intense purpose from the beginning, and while he says he isn't looking to get married right now, we can all tell better from his words and actions. He may be an alpha male, but he is not brooding - he can be sensitive and has a great sense of humor, knows what he wants when he sees it and pursues it with a deliberate but not overbearing purpose. He is able to bring out the best in Melissa and get her to open up to him, and to love. The sex scenes are really quite hot in this book, with an added visual element - be sure you check out the cover!!

I received an ARC copy of Fall Back in exchange for an honest review.

I like how this SEAL, Cade Duncan was so sweet and cute. He runs into this woman, Melissa on his way in to a hospital. It turns out that they're both heading to the same room. Cade tries to get Melissa's phone number from his friend and then asks him to invite him over for dinner and "maybe her at the same time". I just find it charming that this Alpha male is asking a friend for help to get the girl.

Mel has been training to do an endurance race in Hawaii, but no one knows the importance of this race to her but her. Unfortunately, her training partner has to bail at the last minute and Cade steps in to be her partner. He's impressed with her abilities and helps her prepare. He's so thoughtful in helping her and sees that she's struggling with some issue, but he doesn't know what and he's patiently waiting for her to reveal it. As the story unfolds, you see their feelings for each other develop and she entrusts him with her reasons for being there. He was so caring and supported her in endurance race and conquering what she said out to do. It was great watching their love grow through this story.

Such a great fun, light hearted and warming story. Another great by Zoe York! If this is any indication of the others in this bundle, you don't want to miss it.

Uncharted -Anna Lowe

Julie Steffens has just finished 6 months of archaeological research and is on her way to Belize. She's stopped at the border to show her passport, when she realises there's a couple of jeeps with armed men chasing her. Without thinking she panics and flees. In Belize she runs into the last person she expects to see again, her holiday fling who disappeared without even a goodbye. But she needs help and there's no one else.
Seth Cooper traded life in the fast lane for a much calmer one. One that includes his boat, beach bars and hammocks. When he runs into the woman he'd been looking for he doesn't expect guns and high speed chases. He wants Julie, no matter what and the only thing he can be sure of is the way he feels about her. But with the wrong side of the law on their heels will they get the chance to be happy and sail off into the sunset or will they end up in prison somewhere!

This was a really enjoyable read. I really like this authors style of writing, it's simple but effective, my favourite kind. I loved the characters, they were were well defined, sweet and had good chemistry. It was action packed and kept you entertained throughout the whole. The story had humor and as well as some really sad moments, choked me up a bit. It just had a good balance of everything. I really loved it!
