Night Speed: A Pulse-Pounding YA Sci-Fi Thriller of Deadly Drugs and Unstoppable Power

Rate this book
Only those young enough can survive the pulse-pounding rush of tetra, a dangerous and addictive new drug that fuels a nine-minute burst of superhuman strength and speed. Alana West has been trained to use the drug so she can pursue the young criminals who abuse its power—criminals like the breakneck who nearly killed her kid brother.

On tetra, Alana is unstoppable. The rush makes her an explosive blur as she surges through New York City, battling to bring down breaknecks before they leave more people dead or injured in their wake. But with the clock ticking down to her eighteenth birthday, Alana will soon be too old for the rush...when just one more dose will prove deadly.

Supported only by her strong and steady handler, Tucker, Alana goes undercover, infiltrating an elite gang of breaknecks to stop the supply of their drug. But when Alana gets trapped on the wrong side of the law, she learns the breaknecks are not quite what they seem—especially Ethan, the artistic boy whose bottomless brown eyes seem to see the truth inside her. With her own dependency on tetra increasing, Alana must decide where her loyalties lie before the rush ends. Forever.

I'm the author of ROOTLESS (Scholastic), as well as the follow-up THE RIFT, and the final book of this "Mad Max meets Lord of the Rings" tree-logy, THE RECKONING... Also the author of the rad new sci-fi thriller NIGHT SPEED. I live in Denver, but grew up not far from London. I studied natural resources in college, then spent eight years leading wilderness adventure trips for high school students. I like to write more than anything else I've ever done, though reading is right up there, too.

Thrilled to be able to share a little about a book I’ve been working on for the past eighteen months...

NIGHT SPEED is about teens who use a drug that for 9 minutes makes them able to...

While the world becomes all

The drug is highly addictive

And though you get a burst of superhuman strength

And speed

You also experience increased aggression

And a disconnect from reality

One girl risks addiction and death to infiltrate a group of young criminals who use the drug to...

Driven by revenge, she has to prove herself as one of them

But with less catsuit, and a little more

So… yeah!! I wanted to write a story where the stakes are high, the action is high-octane, and things are as thought-provoking as they are thrilling. A book that would explore cycles of addiction, cycles of violence, and... um, the temporality of existence!?!

Night Speed will be out summer 2016. I can't wait for you to check it out!

A Young Adult book with high-intensity action, drugs, and catching villains in the metropolitan city in the US of A. That sounds like a pretty good premise, don't you think? Reminds me of all those superhero books we all adore, except this one has young teenagers taking drugs to give them superstrength/speed/and whatever super-what-have-you. Reading this book a few weeks ago, it actually was pretty enjoyable...

...until it didn't.

Here's the thing: this book had potential. The first seventy percent was such an amazing ride. Here we are, introduced to a main character who is supposedly the best runner in her department. Her job as a teenage tool of the government? To use the Tetra (which is the drug, if the cliché drug name itself wasn't self-explanatory enough) to catch people using knock-offs of the drug to rob banks and risk public security. I loved the main character, Alana West, because she was so relatable - she wasn't the dreaded goody-two-shoes heroine, nor was she an annoying, reckless girl who thought the world revolved around her. She was level-headed, and at the same time, she was oozing with personality and had enough insecurities and self-loathing to balance her character (and no, I am not being sarcastic, she was pretty well-rounded), and trust me I JUST LOVED READING ALL OF IT. I GOBBLED IT ALL UP. I loved the intensity of the first seventy percent in the book, and I loved how in the middle part there was this internal struggle between using the drug to do good and using the drug because you're addicted to the drug and the 9 minutes of euphoria it gives you. I'm not sure how exactly accurate it was, but I felt like it was somehow a sneak peek into the mind of an addict and how much they justified using illegal drugs. It felt so real and so intimate and so disturbing all at the same time how the hero became a zero all because of a drug (and of course, some political shit, but hey, that's for you to find out by reading the book, right?) and I just LOVED IT.

And then the last thirty percent came, and it all went to shit.

I don't know what happened with the book, but for some reason, the last thirty percent flushed down all the complexity, all the rawness of the narrative, all the GOOD THINGS, down the toilet and it become inconssitent, predictable, and just downright insufferable. I wish I could expand more on this, but that would mean spoilers, and I really don't want to spoil you guys, but let's just say it felt like there was a change of authors because it became so ridiculous. From a very complex story about users using drugs with government conspiracies at the side, it became a story of some girl who fell head over heels in love with a dude she just met who contradicted herself every time she had a chance, with a cheesy villain coming out which was totally foreseen-able twenty miles away.

Long story short:

First seventy percent: AWESOME AS BEANS
Last thirty percent: I NEED MY LAST TWO HOURS OF MY LIFE BACK PLEASE.

Take that as you will.

Well well well… I am impressed! A LOT!!! THIS IS SO GOOD! *thumbs up*
*MC’s Corner*
Note: Spoilers.

• I actually reread the first couple of chapters before really liking it. I’m so glad I reread it. I think the first time I read it was the time I was so groggy from the lack of sleep… LOL. I mean I was actually looking for a book that will put me to sleep. I was reading Night Speed chapter 2 or 3 when I fell asleep. So what I am really saying is reading night Speed requires a lot of attention. *grin* DON’T READ IT WHEN YOU’RE SLEEPY.

• I chose to read this book mainly because the author (as far as I know) is a guy. Sorry! But it’s true; HarperCollins ARC written by male are majority of the book that did not disappoint me for every catalog. Aaaand male authors usually don’t over romanticized YA books. Sometimes they lacked romance but that’s okay. Chris Howard nailed this thing! I love it!

• I also love the way the story went. I thought the story is going to the way I expected it but it went to another way without breaking the excitement I felt. Chris Howards gives constant great scenes.

• The backdrop though… it was good but I think it needs to have a specific timeline. I don’t mind that it doesn’t have one, but it’s better if it has I think.
It feels current but with this ‘secret organization thingy that is not so secret’ it’s a bit hard to find its place.

• CHARACTERS:
 Lana/Alana – Honestly, at first I was a bit thrown off guard when I realized that the protagonist is a female. (Sexist me much, I know. But I’m really not.) I think she’s cool. I felt her sadness, especially when she talks/thinks about her younger brother. Then when she’s excited and scared, I felt like I was in her place while reading Night Speed. What happened to her in the story is mind blowing in a way. Her transition from a ‘law enforcer’ catching criminals then to be a criminal. GOSH! I THINK I SAID TO MUCH! #SPOILER

 Ethan – lets just say that he is one of the ‘criminals’ and he and Lana became close. *grin*

 Trevor – I KNEW IT! GRRR!!! IEFFING KNEW IT! IT WAS YOU! WAAAH!!! *banging my head on the table*

• I am not a big fan of the cover… I love that ‘WHAT DOESN’T KILL YOU MAKES YOU FASTER’
LURVE IT!

ARC provided by in exchange of honest review. Thank you!

This was such a fun book with a really cool concept. Now that I have had some time to process this book, I can see there were some flaws. I was so wrapped up in the story that I didn’t pay attention to any of them. You shouldn’t either. This was a very unique YA story. It is a story worthy of all the attention it is getting and more.

The beginning of this story starts with seventeen year old Alana working with the TRU criminal department of justice. Alana is a Runner. Her job is to get on tetra and catch the bad guys. Tetra is a new drug that can only be used on kids under 18. On tetra, a kid is fast and strong. So fast that they can outrun cars. A group of kids on tetra are now using it to rob banks in New York City, before they can be caught they disappear amid the crowds. This group is called The Breaknecks. Sometimes they run into things and/or people. A lot of innocent people have been hurt by the kids on tetra. Alana has a special reason to try to catch breaknecks, one of the slammed into her little brother and now he is in a wheelchair for the rest of his life. When the breakneck Alana is chasing decided to end her own life, Alana becomes a criminal.

Alana is such a great lead character. She is so driven by what happened to her brother. Alana was fast, but I loved that she wasn’t the fastest. She spends a lot of time being an outsider in this story. I think she was a really relateable character, even if her predicament is not. The supporting cast don’t get too much attention. There was a love interest, but it was by no means the main subject in this story. The drug is the story. Alana has sort of a love/hate thing with tetra.

Alana starts off a really great role model for her brother. When things get bad for Alana, they get really bad. She goes from being part of law enforcement, to being a criminal on the run. She goes to the only people who would take her in as a criminal, but she still has all these great intentions. She never wavered in her need to seek justice.

The drug itself is so well laid out for the reader. The drug almost makes a person invisible, but there are rules. Like most drugs, there are horrible side effects. The author highlighted each one, and even pointed out the withdrawal, without being preachy. I loved the idea of Tetra, even if it only lasts for 8 minutes. The people too old (due to chemical changes in a body as it matures) wish they were still using. Along with making someone super fast, it also allows for a person to experience the fourth dimension. This sounds so fun, I almost wish it was a real thing (although i am way past the using age, it sounds so cool!).

I have to admit that I had a few issues with this story. There was nothing major, so I am not going to even mention them here. It might have been me and that I am old, (where are these kids parents?). Even with the small issues I had I would still absolutely recommend this book. This story covers some very heavy subjects with ease. I enjoyed the main theme of consequences and trying to do the right thing. There were quite a few twists in Night Speed. This is a great story about addiction that is unlike anything in YA today. I am so glad I got a chance to read this. If you like young adult science fiction, you need Night Speed in your life!

After I read the blurb for Night Speed, I knew I had to get the book.

After a perilous journey to get the book (by which I mean getting it from Edelweiss), I started to read it. Holy cow, there was a lot of

And some of this

And a whole lot of this

And that was just the first chapter.

What else I loved about the book:

EVERYTHING!!!

I cannot recommend this book enough. It was pure, YA literature goodness. I'd give it 10 out 5 stars! It was that good. My reaction after finishing the book...

Simply put - You must read this book!

So I was lucky enough to get an ARC of this book and I am so happy I did. I knew I wanted to read Night Speed as soon as I finished reading the blurb. And as soon as I started reading I was sucked in and I felt like I was on terta as I was flying through the pages. There were twists in the story I didn't expect that had me gasping in surprise and eager to see where they would lead.

This book was amazing and I'm upset it's over. It's like I turned eighteen and my rushing days are over. If you love high speed action with a mystery and a tale of what addiction can do , then Night Speed is for you.

Bueno, este libro está lleno de clichés, con personajes aburridos, lo único que me gusto fue que la historia es entretenida, con mucha acción, por eso le puse sus dos estrellas, por qué del resto nooo me gustó nada más.

Before I begin, I’m going to say that it’s impossible to put this book down — it was incredible from start to finish. Fast-paced, action-packed, and sprinkled with humor, NIGHT SPEED was a novel that had me flipping the pages at all hours of the day. (Reason #501265465 why homeschooling is awesome: READ ALL THE BOOKS. WHENEVER).

It’s been a long time since I’ve read science fiction, a genre I’m not a huge fan of, because scientific lingo can get confusing. Which roughly translates into science fiction being confusing, thus making it boring. But NIGHT SPEED is neither confusing nor boring. It was epic. It was marvelous.

Tetra is a drug that gives teenagers a nine minute window of superhuman strength and speed and the way Chris Howard describes it was amazing. Especially when our main character was on the drug and enters the Fourth Dimension a pretty cool-sounding place.

Alana West is a character that I loved and enjoyed reading. The best part about her? She doesn’t lose her mind when she goes undercover, like most characters do. I’m not going to elaborate, because of spoilers, but she was incredible.

There aren’t many things wrong with NIGHT SPEED but the one part that still bothers me is how, in a certain scene, the main character does something unwise—oddly out of character for Alana—something even I knew wasn’t going to go well. It felt like the author was simply trying to move the story along, like the scene was a plot device. But that takes up like half a page and the rest is AWESOME.

Did I say I enjoyed this book far more than I thought I would? BECAUSE I DID.

And it’s set in New York. NEW YORK. That’s all I need to say about that.

The ending was perfect, albeit sad. And while everything is wrapped up, it’s one of those books that leave things open for the future. Which obviously means I loved it, because I love when an open ending is done right. And done right this was.

NIGHT SPEED is a novel you definitely want to pick up, it’s everything you could ever want in 416 pages. I know, that might seem like a lot, but once you start it’s impossible to put it down and those pages are going to speed past really fast.

TO SUM UP NIGHT SPEED IN THREE GIFS:

Glad I got to finally read this book. Night Speed is basically like The Flash but sort of druggie style for teens where there is a subset of criminals that use it to steal money and then the team that uses it to chase them down and arrest them.

I was completely into it for the first 50%, but then it kind of dragged a bit after that. Near the very end there are some nice twists. What I liked: For the most part, I liked the main character, I was interested in the set up. Howard is very good with action scenes. I'm not typically into books like that, but for many of the speed scenes, I was on the edge of my seat. There are some great twists at the end, some which I wasn't expecting that came at a lightning pace.

What didn't really work for me: Alana's emotional arc (and the emotional arcs for the other characters for that matter) was kind of jerky and basically with no growth until the very end. There are some things that happen that seem way too fast for the characters to go through that kind of transition, and seemed unrealistic. For a book this long, you'd think there could be more space to work on the emotional growth and spread out some of the twists to allow the characters time and space to get to a new place.

Overall, a fun read, definitely worth a read, but could have been paced better, especially for the emotional arcs of the characters.

This is the BEST action book I have read in a long, long time. Night Speed's plot centers around Tetra—a drug that makes you super fast for nine minutes. It also makes you see the world in a new and colorful way—and that's exactly how I felt while reading this book. Night Speed got my adrenaline pumping to the point where my hands were shaking and it left me breathless.

description

Experiencing all of the highs and lows of the main character made me feel so alive. Night Speed has cast me under its spell, and to call it is amazing is a total understatement. I couldn't contain the overflowing joy I felt when I was reading, it was an overwhelmingly thrilling adventure that I want everyone to experience, so do yourself a favor and go pre-order this awe-inspiring book!

Night Speed was one of the most original books I have ever read. It was fiction but had realistic elements and a mysterious side as well, not to mention the huge shocker at the end of the book that had me rethinking everything.

The one thing that I really didn’t enjoy about this book was that Alana became involved in lie after lie after lie. While it was necessary for her survival, at times I would find myself wishing for her to just tell the truth. In books like these, honesty is always the best policy as the lies tend to be uncovered one way or another. I knew that the only reason she was lying was to protect herself and her family but I also knew her web of lies was bound to unravel at some point. Night Speed was different though, so if you want to know whether these lies actually got uncovered you’ll have to read the book yourself.

Night Speed was unlike anything I have ever read before. The idea was so cool and original! The idea itself just stood out so much. Since it’s so different, there were tons of genres mixed in as I mentioned before. It was sort of realistic fiction, with emphasis on the fiction part. It was action packed but mysterious and also had softer bits which added more dimension. It was blended nicely so certain genres didn’t overpower others and they all shone through nicely.

The way all the different stories behind the characters intertwine throughout the book is very cool. Every once in awhile something would be discovered about a character adding to their story but also changing the story of another character. Everyone was somehow connected it was just about finding how. This really shows how well thought out Night Speed was. So much thought goes into not revealing stories too soon but dropping some hints so when you find out you think you should have seen this coming earlier. These surprises kept me on my toes and anxiously awaiting what was coming next.

After reading many books of the same genre you notice patterns and other similarities that become staples for that genre. For example in my Emmy & Oliver review, I touched on similarities in many YA romances as to how the love interests meet. Night Speed went beyond expectations, emerging as part of many genres. If you are looking for something different but not too far out of your comfort zone, then Night Speed is the book for you.

If Point Break were rebooted as an addiction memoir, it might look a little like Howard's Night Speed.

A year ago a criminal hopped up on Tetra, a drug that imbues users with super speed and strength, plowed into Alana West's younger brother while making his getaway, leaving her brother crippled. Fueled by guilt and rage, Alana becomes a runner, part of an elite teenage crime fighting force whose members dose up on Tetra to catch the breaknecks who use the drug to allow them to rob banks. (Think of it as fighting drug rush with drug rush.) As she approaches the age past which Tetra becomes toxic to its users, Alana agrees to go undercover to discover the identity of the mysterious dealer who supplies the breaknecks, only to find herself sucked into the rush of their lifestyle.

Night Speed starts promisingly enough, with a heroine who's conflicted about her past and struggling with an addiction to Tetra that she's only beginning to recognize, and her descent into the murky morality of the breaknecks seemed like the perfect opportunity for some inner conflict interspersed with ass-kicking. Instead, Alana almost immediately becomes a slave to her buzz and decides to take up with a guy who seems like a sweetheart except for the fact that, you know, he's a DRUG-ADDICTED BANK ROBBER. The plot jerks and stutters before ending with a couple of predictable reveals, neither of which Alana reacts to in a way which seems emotionally honest.

I'm presuming that Howard's intent was not to be all YAY, DRUGS!, but the amount of time spent extolling the beauty of the buzz and quoting Campbell and Kerouac (because: speed, get it?) vastly surpasses the time spent on negative consequences and the utter lack of fun that is withdrawal and recovery. I think there's supposed to be a lesson here about living in the now and maybe sharing the moment, but everything's so decked out in neon glow sticks and ring pops that it's tough to make out the message.

Night Speed sets a solid pace with its driving action, but its unintentional (?) glorification of drug culture brought me up short. If you're as sensitive to that kind of thing as I apparently am, you may want to find another drug of choice.

Review By: Sarah W (10th grade)

Night Speed is about a young girl in a messed up situation. New York is a dangerous place in this dystopian fantasy, as the new menacing drug, Tetra, is on the rise. Alana works for an organization trying to stop dangerous criminals, otherwise known as Breaknecks, from hurting innocent people and stealing lots of money. Breaknecks use high grade Tetra to give them incredible strength and speed, allowing them to break into banks and stores to steal as much as they can and make a quick getaway. When Alana is accused of a murder she didn’t commit, she goes undercover to try and shut the whole operation down. After all the Breaknecks hurt her brother, so she was going to hurt them. But, what happens if Alana gets too close to these people? What happens when people she thought she knew betray her, and she is left on her own? What will Alana do when her whole world is turned upside down, for the second time in her life?

This book was okay. It wasn’t great, although it wasn’t horrible either. I think my biggest problems are how quick the “romance” between Ethan and Alana is and the fact that I could put it down. I could put it down at any point while reading it and not have one urge to pick it back up. There was a lot of detail, but I just couldn’t get into it for the first ¾ of the book. I wasn’t on edge waiting for what would happen next. I needed more suspense in there, I needed more plot twists and surprises no one saw coming. On the other hand I have never read anything like it. The names, characters and plot are all unique in their own little way, but not enough to make it confusing. I was able to picture pretty easily what was going on in the book, and the characters were human. They had human emotions and made human mistakes, and most of all had a sense of empathy that many could relate too. I really loved the ending, and how Howard seemed to be able to wrap up all the loose ends making it final, but leaving enough open so you could imagine further into the universe.

Recommendation: This would be a good filler book for anyone looking for something that wouldn’t tie you down.

Grade Range: 8th grade and up
Genre: Science Fiction / YA
Literary Merit: Good
Characterization: Very Good

I was really intrigued by Night Speed by Chris Howard when I first read the synopsis, it sounded unique and thrilling and thankfully it was a book that I really enjoyed despite a few minor issues.

Our MC is seventeen year-old Alana West who has been trained to use a drug called tetra which gives a nine minute rush to pursue criminals who abuse its power, she is good at what she does but knows her time using the drug is coming to an end.

Alana started using tetra in an effort to fight the breaknecks that use the high speed rush to fuel their crimes and their getaways. But when she is blamed for a breaknecks death, she goes undercover to take down the source within the organisation. She is also on a bit of a revenge mission to find the person responsible for nearly killing her little brother.

Alana was an interesting character; she is constantly desperate for her next fix and her thought process was conflicted on numerous occasions which highlighted her addiction, you could also feel her emotional struggles especially when it came to her brother.

There is a snippet of romance but it isn’t at the forefront of the story, I wasn’t 100% sure who her real affections were with, her handler Tucker or a breakneck who she befriends, Ethan.

Night Speed takes you on a thrill-ride; it is fast paced and gives us enough information without overwhelming us. A lot of important subject matters are touched upon in this book; drug use and addiction, revenge, morals and consequences and I felt like they were dealt with well.

I liked the concept, it reminded me a little of Rush by Eve Silver, another series which I enjoyed. The main strengths of this book include an intriguing world, plenty of action, and entertaining writing that keeps you turning the pages – there were also a few twists that I definitely was expecting. The main weakness of this book were the confusing relationships, I was never quite sure who could be trusted.

Night Speed is written well and is a fun, action packed story with an interesting cast of characters; a great setting and compelling plot.

Thank you to Katherine Tegen Books for the opportunity to read and review Night Speed.

Tetra. A drug that can give you superhuman speed and strength for nine minutes. But only people under 18 can use it. Alana West uses it for good to take down other people who use it for crime. But when the opportunity comes, she gets to infiltrate those people to take out their source, but then things go wrong. Will she be able to take out the source before her tetra rush goes dry? Will she be caught? Read this book to find out. I liked that this book had so many turns and twists and really makes you wonder what will happen. I recommend this book to people who like suspense and sci-fi technology. This book is different then most books I've read like Eragon or Percy Jackson . It made me feel amazed because the character had so much happening and somehow could keep it together!
