Edge Security #1

Edge of Control

Rate this book
E.D.G.E. Security is a covert international organization that handles jobs most governments won’t. The operators are the elite of the elite, soldiers and spies, chosen for their skills and secrecy, and their ability to go beyond the edge.

E.D.G.E wants to recruit Navy SEAL Jake ‘College’ Harrison but he’s skeptical of the good he can do as an E.D.G.E. operator. His trial assignment is a simple recon mission with the target being the Russian mob. The only interesting aspect of the job is the sexy IT tech, but Jake doesn’t want or need any trouble in his life and Dani has trouble written all over her.

No one knows who Danielle Everett really is, beyond the fact that she works as a simple tech at E.D.G.E. Security company. The new hire who gets the operator job she covets, frustrates her as much as he attracts her, because he digs beneath her carefully constructed identity and she has to fight the urge to run.

But when Dani’s best friend goes missing, she uses the hacking and thieving skills she’d learned as a child to find her, but in the process alerts her enemies that she’s still alive. Can she trust Jake to help her escape and save her friend, or will she push him to the edge of his control?

I don't often read romantic suspense, but this book ticked a bunch of boxes for me. I haven't been in the Armed Services, but I know the author has, and thus the military/paramilitary stuff felt real and logical to me. I trusted that her terminology and gun facts were accurate, and there were no glaring errors to this civilian's eye.

Some romantic suspense heroines are Too Stupid to Live, and some of the heroes are what the Smart Bitches call Alph-holes, but neither of those is the case here. The heroine, Dani, is the primary POV character, and she is smart, savvy, and gutsier than she gives herself credit for in the crunch. Jake, the hero, is smart, strong, and competent in the way that makes romance readers weak in the knees. He's an alpha character, and slightly dictatorial at first, but he's never a mudak to the heroine. He never bosses her around just because he's used to being the boss.

There is some pretty graphic violence in the story, which involves open warfare in the beginning and some thoroughly nasty criminal activity after that. There is plenty of hand-to-hand fighting, stealth, and gunfire, and the physicality of movement, the look and physical effect of injuries, was generally quite realistic.

In all, a good first novel from a promisingly original writer. When does book two come out, Trish?

Before I review this, let me answer the "why do you read such crap?" question. To be honest, books like these are highly entertaining. They have a paper-thin plot line, nausea-inducing characters, and terrible grammar. We all need our junk food, and this is it for my brain (no, really, I do the Hindu crossword every single day, and that is enough mental stimulation for me sometimes). Now that that's out of the way, let's get on with the review. This wasn't as terrible as the other ones I've read, but it was still pretty bad, so yeah, maybe 2.5 rather than 2 stars.

Meet Jake "College" Harrison, Navy SEAL and all round alpha male. And so on cue, I dislike him and his bulging muscles and black t-shirts. Scarred in body and soul, he finds the perfect soulmate in Dani Everett, hacker extraordinaire and make-up hater. She thinks anyone who wears heels and business suits are poor defenseless women, and so likes dressing dowdy. This has to be the worst logic I've ever come across. Anyway, they weren't the worst that I've read about; Dani wasn't as much a damsel in distress as she was a pain in the ass, and Jake wasn't a complete douche. The storyline was slightly better, because Russian mafia. Think Get Smart and any cop procedural thrown together with unnaturally hot characters, and there you have it. Also, I think extremely muscular men look terrible in tuxedos, I mean, have you seen Schwarzenegger in one? But then again, I think extremely muscular men look terrible, period, so maybe that's just me. Because Dani goes all jelly-legs when she sees Jake's well-defined muscles in a monkey suit.

Thing is, I didn't all out hate them. I mean they had their moments, but those were too few and far between to be endearing. The chemistry between them was also not flat, so there's that too.

Again, it baffles me that I need to mention this, but please, dear writer, do not use words like 'snafu' unless they're a part of the conversation. Oh, and for the love of all that is holy, please remember the colour of your MC's eyes, man! Like how forgetful are you? It's deep green in in one page, and blue in the next? And what the fuck are editors doing?

P.S. Anya, there's a character called Anya in this. :P

“Relax, hacker girl. It’s me,” Jake said in her ear.
She whirled in his arms and hugged him tight. He winced as she pressed down on his bruised ribs. She loosened her grip, but he tightened his arms around her before she could pull away. She snuggled into him and he pressed his lips to the top of her head, enjoying having her safe in his arms. “I’ve got you.”
She mumbled something into his chest.
“What’s that?” he asked.
She lifted her head. “I didn’t think you’d come for me.”
He cupped her face in his hands. “I’ll always come for you.” Her eyes widened and her lips parted. He leaned down and pressed his mouth to hers. They didn’t have time, but he had to touch her, claim her, if only for a moment.

Great military style suspense

I had never read this author before, but decided to give this series a try since I could read it for free on kindle unlimited. I'm really happy I did, because I loved it. Both the premise and the characters were interesting and relatable. Jake was especially yummy, and I loved how he called Dani Hacker Girl. He saw right through her exterior to the woman she really was. Dani turned out to be a kick butt heroine who was not afraid to take care of herself. She and Jake together were fun.

I liked these so much that I've already downloaded books two and three.

There are some military operations that require more than normal channels to get the job done. What do you do when you need a covert operation to be handled under the table? You call E.D.G.E Security, an organization that is made up of the best of the best from governments all over the world.

In Trish Loye’s first novel in her Edge Security Series we delve into a world of espionage and military missions that will keep the reader involved, waiting for what happens next. Edge of Control is the first book in this series and is the story of two unlikely people that find love unexpectedly, this is Dani and Jake’s story.

Danielle’s life has not been easy, but she has fought to create a new life for herself. A life away from the corruption and evil of the Russian mob. Dani thought she had finally found her niche at E.D.G.E. as a IT tech. Her job is mundane for someone with her capabilities, but she wants this new beginning. When operative Jake Harrison steps into the picture, life takes another unexpected turn for Dani. But Dani’s past refuses to stay in the past and comes back to haunt her in her could be future.

Jake is faced with a forced vacation from his SEAL team. He is offered a position with E.D.G.E., but is torn between his SEAL team and missions he will be running as an E.D.G.E. operative. To sweeten the new position is a beautiful, mysterious woman that works as an IT tech. There is something about her that pulls at him and want let go. However, Dani is not what she appears to be. There is so much more to her and he wants to uncover all of her secrets.

This is a romantic suspense filled novel with military action and who done it questions that burn up the pages with sexual challenge. Ms. Loye has created a group of heroes and heroines that you will want to meet. This is an outstanding addition to my library.

I liked parts of this one. The action and suspense plot was fast paced and entertaining. The whole top secret group that is E.D.G.E and all the bad ass side characters (I'm thinking of Rhys here btw) was all good ground work for the start of a series but the two main character, Jake and Dani, they just fell flat for me.

To be honest, Jake was a pretty bad ass alpha hottie. I liked that he was always going that extra mile to show Dani he was the good guy, he would protect her and that he genuinely cared about her. I didn't really appreciate the whole doubting her objective, I get that he doesn't know her yet and it's his job to be suspicious but did it have to be so drawn out?

Then there's Dani, she sounded like she was going to be a sweet but strong kiss ass heroine but in reality she just kept thinking and acting like not a bad ass. I wish she hadn't acted so recklessly and she never stopped to think things through. She was a hacker but she wasn't at all logical or methodical. It felt like the author couldn't make up her mind whether to make her a damsel in distress or the hero.

Also the ending was super cute but not very believable. These two don't know each other. Literally have known each other for two weeks, where there was no getting to know you period or an emotional connection other then sexual chemistry. I needed more alone time with them. And I don't mean while their undercover or getting shot at. I needed to see them together as a normal couple, dating and flirting. Not just lustful looks and a hot ONS.

As for the villain in the story, Vlad was more likely to make you giggle than strike fear in your heart. I just didn't buy that this idiot was smart enough to run such an evil and diabolical operation that is human trafficking. He meets his end but could have added so much to the story.

I'd say it ended with a HFN.

OMG!!! What a hot, intense, I can’t believe book!! Uhmmm, I would love to have a hot Navy SEAL guy with gray eyes, and black hair guarding me from the front to back!!! Jake was definitely my kind of guy that I love to have him press me up against any wall to 'protect' me from the big bad guys of the world!!

Okay that is enough of what I want… let’s get to the real story of Edge of Control! I still don’t know how Dani could be in control with Jake around! The two main characters were not only funny, but also into some things that would put a damper on any relationship! Dani, who is a hacker and has a past that would keep any man at bay, somehow… catches, straight and narrow Navy SEAL, Jake’s eye in this fast pace novel that would be too intense for the average reader!! I like that the story takes place in a different world and the author does not shy away from what is really going on in this world.

Dani was a very complex character and it was nice to see that she had live her life on the edge so to speak and at the end began to see that she wanted to use her skills to do ‘good’ in the world. I like how the author made her struggled with letting anyone in after the past she had. I like how the author brought the reader to see what our real world is like and that like Dani we have to live it with our eyes wide open and not shut.

Jake was just hot!! Just like how I like my man character, I did not totally agree with some of the things that he said, but I like how we got to see a different side of a Navy SEAL. I like that the author got the terminology correct. It really makes me mad when you are reading something and you know that it was not research well before the author took a seat at the writing table.

The plot was believable and I could really see the situations that these two got in being real! I have to say that I am looking forward to the rest of series. Well done Ms. Loye!!! You have just won another fan in your club.

This is a smart thriller with just enough edge to it to keep you on your toes. The characters are believable & well rounded with lots of hidden layers to them. It has a good, solid plot & plenty of suspense to keep it running along nicely. Jake & Dani's relationship sparks at their very first meeting, and gradually progresses with enough intensity & sexual chemistry to keep you rooting for them. I really liked them, they were both independent & powerful in their own right, and each had a specific skill set that defined part of their characters. I warmed even more to Jake because of his persistence with Dani in getting her to trust him, which was really hard to do! I wanted to shout at her a few times for being so pig headed, but when her past came to light i completely understood why she is the way she is, and that it was down to survival. I read this book in one sitting & will definitely be reading the next in the series.

I needed a book like this in between my other books because this was such an amazing book and it made me discover a brand new author to me that just made me read it in one go. I couldn't get enough of the story and the characters. It was simply amazing and I loved it.

No reasons not to love this book if you love suspense with romance. I can't wait to read others of this author because this is my favorite genre and it's definitely one of the authors I look forward to reading more.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is a very fast paced book full of suspense, intrigue and action with some romance too. Dani, the heroine is a woman who can take care of herself and has had to in her past and as a result finds it hard to trust people. The scenes with the special operations and Navy Seals are well done. Jake a Navy Seal finds his way into Dani's heart and I hope we see more of them in the next book in this series. I look forward to more books from this author.

I was 40% into this book (reading on Kindle) when the main characters were infiltrating a party at the bad guy's house, working undercover. They kept getting distracted by the physical attraction between them and I kept expecting them to get caught at any moment.

I contemplated DNF-ing at that point, but because the writing itself isn't bad, I went on. But seriously, Jake knows that Dani is a distraction to him but he won't allow anyone else to partner with her or be her protection? That was stupid. You know this woman is important to you and that she will distract you from protecting her to the fullest extent, but don't want anyone else to do it? That's idiocy.

He goes to rescue her and when he finds her, he can't stop himself from kissing her even though they have to get out of there asap before the bad guys find them and start shooting.

He leaned down and pressed his mouth to hers. They didn't have time, but he had to touch her, claim her, if only for a moment. His hands slid down her back, molding her to him. He demanded she melt for him, and she did.

There are silver linings: she is no helpless damsel in distress, but a very fit woman with great computer skills and the ability to fight (because she trains in an MMA gym). He doesn't go all overprotective or alpha, but recognises her skills and abilities and trusts her to use them.

However, I just could not get over all the sexual distractions and I still think they ought to have gotten at least injured for their lack of full focus on the mission. I won't be reading any of the other books in this series.

I found myself intrigued by the EDGE itself. Wanted to know more about how it came to be. Before starting this one I thought the first couple might have been the guy that runs it, so I was a bit surprised it ends up being a couple of new comers.

Dani was interesting, she hid so much, was so distrustful. Granted she had reason to, yet she was all up in arms when she wanted to help but they wouldn't let her because they couldn't trust her, which caused her to go out on her own.

I'm was on the fence with Jake, seemed like he was only at EDGE as a favor to his CO, doing time there very reluctantly. I liked that Jake didn't rat out Dani when he had the chance to, but more realized her skills and used her to help him with the job he was working on.

The drama with the Russian's was predictable, both in what Dani did and what Jake did. Things wrapped up at the end quickly with quite a few loose ends not being addressed.

Superb romantic suspense

This book has it all: action, suspense, romance, great writing, and clean editing. The protagonists aren't perfect, but they're believable. The hero is alpha without being an absolute jerk. The heroine is strong and loyal despite her insecurities and sketchy background. Character development is solid without the boredom of information dumps. Terrific book!

I wasn't too entirely sure what to make of this book, only to say that it definitely had the ingredients for a credible romantic suspense narrative: loads of action, a strong heroine who's definitely a match for a typical SEAL hero (who's near godlike in his ability to stay undefeated) and a mysterious but somewhat unbelievable organisation that inserts itself into the cracks so that they can bypass bureaucratic red-tape.

Yet I couldn't quite get into the story for reasons I can't quite articulate properly. Suffice to say that it didn't have a profound enough effect on me for it to be unforgettable - hence the 3-stars. Maybe it had to do with Dani's intimidating set of skills that put her past the 'normal' range of women I'm used to, or maybe it was Jake's inconsistent commitment to the cause and to her...or maybe even the rushed Happy-For-Now ending that left me wondering if they were better off shaking hands instead.

Instead, I find myself wondering about Rhys and Cat's UST - which means I'll definitely go on to book 2 for it.

There were a lot of things I enjoyed about this book. Number one - hacker girl. Number two - smart women. It is a really good book and I enjoyed it. The reason for 3 stars isn't because its bad, there were just some things that seemed a little too much. I know its hard to flesh out every little detail I just felt there was just a little too much in one book. It wasn't that I hated all the details, I just felt some parts felt too rushed. Although when I got to the end, I understood it was just my preference. It didn't need those parts fleshed out, I'm just greedy.

While this book had a studly SEAL, there were plenty of other aspects that kept it interesting. Most of the story took place in Canada. Reflecting on this, I think I’ve read very few, if any, books set in Canada. That’s a surprise, and it was a nice change. Plus, the heroine was tough and the bad guys were so very bad. The romance was good but not plentiful. I read the ebook, which was free. I look forward to more in the series. 4/5

I liked this book quite a bit. I wasn't sure what to think when I went into it, but the very first chapter immediately captures your attention and really introduces you to who Jake is. It's actually quite well done. The suspense is also excellent. While the Russian mafia and human trafficking stories are quite common in this genre, I thought this one had a unique take on it re: Dani's background and relationship to the main villain.

I also thought Dani was an excellent heroine. This isn't just a woman we are told is strong, but then has to depend on the hero to save her every time. No, this is a woman who can actually kick quite a bit of ass on her own. Even though Jake does save her a few times, I had no trouble believing she could've gotten herself out of her own mess eventually without his help. I have never seen that before in any romance novel, even with really well written strong heroines. So kudos to the author for that.

Jake was a great guy, strong, loyal, smart, and with plenty of integrity. I liked him individually the way I liked Dani.

I think where it went south for me was the romance itself. There was a bit of an "instalust" there that I thought was kind of unrealistic, given that Dani was purposely dressed plainly and Jake shouldn't have even noticed her that first time they met. Even though the build up to their relationship was good and steady, I had trouble "feeling" it. I think I would've enjoyed the story just as much without the romance part of it, which kinda defeats the purpose of reading romantic suspense. I didn't get the usual butterflies feeling I get when I read a couple that really draws me in. It's unfortunate, because I think by all accounts, I should've been into this.

The other thing that I had trouble connecting with was the concept of E.D.G.E. itself. It sounds cool, sure, but it was so unrealistic, I was eye-rolling a few times when what they do was explained. Honestly, they could've been a regular security company and the story wouldn't have changed too much and I would've found it more realistic. I was also a little surprised by a line in which Dani expresses her joy at having found a job with "health benefits". Really? She lives in Canada, where there's universal health. She would've had health care without a job. That sort of took me out of the book for a minute. The author seems to be Canadian, so I'm not sure I understand that very well.

I was also left hanging regarding Ashley. Who is she, exactly? Is she going to feature in future books or something?

I would recommend this book, though, as it's well thought-out, well-written, and very entertaining. No, it didn't suck me in the way other books have recently, but it's still a worthy read. I might revisit the rest of the series at a later date.

Romance with suspense

The EDGE premise kind of reminds me of agents of SHIELD, you know the marvel franchise... here in this story we have ex SEALS, they can be our superhero’s right?

Read as third person between Dani (originally works in research department at EDGE) and Jake (recovering from a gun shot injury from his leg) the story actually flows TOO quickly.

Dani suspects that her friend and neighbour Tassia has gone missing and she does what she does best and looks for her friend, without hesitation. Jakes reads through her body language and barriers and manages to break through them, slowly. He too has a past that we could learn more about (there are underlining PTSD waiting to come out) but the story seems to be more central to Dani. For her to trust again, to open up and resolve past issues so that she can move on with her life.

There are mentions on human trafficking and the Russian mafia and it’s like 6 degrees of separation, well for Dani anyways as her past catches up with her.

Because of the fast action of the story moving so fast, there wasn’t much room for those raw emotions we tend to find in contemporary romance novels but it is enough there to satisfy me. There are some word and gramma typos but overall an entertaining read.

Writing war action sequences is not an easy feat, although kudos for the author for their ‘edge of your seat’ suspense.

Enjoyable

This was my first Trish Loye book and I did enjoy the story enough that I finished the whole book in a few hours. Dani's background and the slow trickle of information about her intriguing past is really what kept me reading. That and I liked the depiction of her character as a hacker with some bad a$$ skills; as a kid whose life took a wrong turn but now she seeks redemption and wants to use her skills for good. Jake, on the other hand, felt flat. He was sexy in the "he's a Navy SEAL" kind of way and he wasn't a typical brooding, overbearing hero towards her. I liked that he tried to coax her trust out little by little.

The plot itself was enjoyable, however the flow was somewhat choppy; the sequences of exciting events/actions didn't flow. The same applied to the romance. They had sex once or twice and it happened pretty late into the story. Even after that the couple still hadn't talked very openly about their pasts, then something happened that was portrayed as a bit of a betrayal of trust and yet the heroine suddenly realized she loved the hero. With that said, it was overall a good book and I don't feel like I wasted my time.

Hard to put down

E.D.G.E is a secret organization working with the government. The agents are former military, sites, and the best of the best. They go do the jobs that no one else can. They skip the red tape. Jake is a SEAL but gets shot on a mission and has to go work two weeks with E.D.G.E. Jake is just wanting to do his two weeks and then go back to the SEALs. Then he meets the researcher/IT Dani. Dani is the best hacker and wants to become an agent. She has been hiding from some very bad people and trusts no one. When her best friend goes missing, no one believes her so she hunts for her herself. She gets kidnapped but escapes and all her secrets come out. Can they find her friend before it’s too late?

First time reading this author and I can’t believe I haven’t heard of her before! Awesome read with action, secrets, and suspense. I can’t wait to check out the rest of her books.

I really enjoyed this book - and best of all I was lucky enough to get it as a free download from Amazon - I have checked today and it is still free so grab your copy whilst you can - it really is worth it!

I thought that the book was great, it had a brilliantly additive and explosive storyline!!
The plot was really well developed and the book had some truly excellent characters. I loved how they worked together and they had some brilliant interaction, I flew through the story and needed to know how it would all end – it has me booked from the first few pages.

It was a fantastic story that was full of romance and hard hitting - A great way to pass a few hours!!
It is 5 stars from me for this one, very well written and a really enjoyable plot - I loved it!
