I am visiting my nieces and nephew who selected many, many books at the awesome Norman OK Public Library.
We read Fuzzy Baseball twice today and they were mesmerized by the book. It is about two baseball teams. The Fernwood Valley Fuzzies have never beaten the Rocky Ridge Red Claws. The names and animal characters of each member of both baseball teams is humorous.
It's a great story about positive attitudes and learning new skills.
The book doesn't have a reading level listed on it. If readers are familiar with baseball or softball, they will understand the scoring that is detailed during the critical game.
'Fuzzy Baseball' by John Steven Gurney is a graphic novel about animals playing baseball.
It's the day of the big game between the Fernwood Valley Fuzzies and the Rocky Ridge Red Claws. With players named Jackie Rabbitson, Sandy Kofox, and Hammy Sosa, it's sure to be a good one. The Fuzzies are the nice guy team and the Red Claws know it and have the advantage. That is, until a rookie for the Fuzzies makes an observation that may turn the game around.
This was a fun story for younger readers (and baseball fans), and the art is really great! I'm not sure young readers will get all the baseball name puns, but I could be wrong.
I like that this li'l book doesn't try to be what it's not. It's about a baseball game, written by someone who understands and loves the game. No frills, gets to the point with humor and style. I also appreciate the inside jokes here and there, especially with the players' names. I'd love to read the rest of the series, but it's not in our library system :(.
This book uses famous baseball players of the past and portrays them as animals playing a baseball an amazing baseball game. I think this would be a great book for boys in middle elementary.
This review is for my 7 year old son...I didn't actually read this book. But I heard his laughter. So much laughter. And then he requested the sequel. That's 5 stars!
A great little comic for kids who like sports. Perhaps not one that would get re-read a whole lot, but a nice, simple story kids could read on their own.
This is a serviceable choice for early elementary students who want graphic novels about sports. The animal characters give the story a bit of a Toon Books (or maybe Zootopia) feel, and the focus is squarely on playing the game of baseball. I didn't like how the two teams were introduced right off as the "good guys" and the "bad guys" for no particular reason. I guess the "bad guys" were making fun of the "good guys" at one point in the story, but other than that, there wasn't much in the book that made me think of them as bad. Missed opportunity there. Oh well, the book's message about the importance of working hard and paying attention is a good one.
