Monstrous Matchmaker #3

Operation Merman

Rate this book
Riding high on the thrill of hooking up two of her monstrous friends with mates, Ari Colton is setting her sights on the lonely merman in the mountain lake. The catch? He can't leave his watery home. Meaning she has to find someone who'd be willing to relocate to his oasis in the mountains for anything to come of it.

The female supernatural population isn't clamoring to sign up with her dating agency despite her successes, so Ari will have to dig deep to find a special someone who will meet all Thisseral's needs.

She's not willing to leave her finned friend without some adventurous female companionship, and she's got the connections to make this work.

She thinks.

Warning: This book contains shenanigans. Wet shenanigans. Dry shenanigans. All sorts of shenanigans. And a horny merman who likes to show his stuff. As one does.

Kelly Apple is a hardcore paranormal junkie with the bad habit of falling for damaged heroes. Finding (and writing) characters who make her heart break is one of her goals in life. She has a boy who can drink his weight in Mountain Dew and always tries to get her to play video games with him. She politely declines on account of all the voices in her head who are impatiently waiting for their stories to be told. Oddly, her two dogs have never tried to talk her into playing video games. They just expect belly rubs.

Kelly lives in sunny Northern California and she’s baffled by snow. Her flip-flop tan is something many dream about but few can achieve.

She reads, she writes, she tweets.

This one is my favorite so far.
You get a bit more detail for world & character build. Not much mind you, but enough for the type of story this is.
There is humor. So it will make you grin.
The females make me think of 'Valley Girls' in some ways.
Not only does it have some steamy scenes with the Merman & his newly matched Nixie, but there are also some steamy scenes with Ari the Monstrous Matchmaker & her 'Special' mate.

A very quick, steamy fun, Monstrous Matchmaker read.

*Note: You want to buy this in its bundle/omnibus edition. For the size of these reads, they are priced to high individually. The bundle is $4.99 on Amazon at the time of this review. There are 8 (eight) books in the bundle. Each book is priced $1.99 separately. They are all between about 40 to 55 pages long.

Oh! I almost forgot. I didn't find any typos/editing errors. Which I find 'Amazing' considering what these stories are. It is obvious to me that the author cares about her craft. These may be humorous little bites of supernatural adult fun, but they are Well Written!

OK. I realize this is a super quick read, a short story, actually. But I don’t know why it’s called Operation Merman. The number of pages devoted to the merman is minimal. It’s all about Ari Colton and her friends. I haven’t read any other books in her series, but I’m unimpressed. It may be that in previous books, the merman was introduced but, in this book, he’s a background figure. More pages are devoted to drinking and traveling.

The lore of mer-people is fascinating. The silkies in Ireland. The sirens poised on rocks to lure sailors to their dooms. The sightings that people swear by and the rest of us just nod our heads and move along. It’s all imaginary, but fun to contemplate. While legends are rife with mermaids (so many legends!), far fewer exist about mermen and merchildren.

The advert blurb on Amazon made it sound as if a matchmaker for “monsters” (kind of a tacky nomenclature) would help a merman find a mate. Perhaps human, perhaps another mer-person, perhaps another supernatural being. Interesting premise.

But the book isn’t about him – it’s about, well…I’m not even sure what it IS about. Nothing, really. A bunch of partiers are partaking in some salacious drinking and then they are traveling to the lake where this merman lives. I’d like to have learned more about his lake home, discovered why he couldn’t leave it, why he couldn’t find a mermaid on his own. All we get is a brief sighting, then a water nymph who decides to take the literal plunge with him. We don’t even find out if it’s a good match.

The short story is not the same as a novel. It requires a different sort of writing style. It can still deliver a punch, even in a mere 50 pages. However, this is just a lot of writing that takes us nowhere. I’m not interested in reading any more of this matchmaking gobbledy-gook.

I rated this book 2 stars. As a story, it didn’t go anywhere. As a title, it’s extraordinarily misleading. I’d still like to read about mer-people, but clearly it won’t be at the hands of this writer.

It was decent and would have been better if it had been with the whole book. The Monstrous Matchmaker are actually part of a series that seem to be a whole book that has been split into parts for each "monster." That makes the reader feel like they've been dropped into the middle of the plot. I like Kelly Apple, but I find myself disappointed that I have to get each separate story. Thus I have taken a star away.

Book 3 in series

Ari is Back in this spin off series, about her matchmaking all her supernatural buddies.
This book features Thesiriel (?) the wicked merman. I was dying for an epilogue and a bit more.
