Stuart Neville's crime stories set in Northern Ireland are always excellent. DCI Serena Flanagan is struggling, she is undergoing counselling to get over feelings of guilt over deaths in a case sometime ago. She is living under the fear that her family might split, with her husband Alistair having recurring nightmares over another of Serena's cases and her children are far closer to him than Serena. She finds herself in the unexpected position of praying that her family stays together. Despite the problems with her job, there is nothing else that she can imagine herself doing. Serena gets a routine call to visit the scene of the apparent suicide of a disabled man.
The Garrick couple have been visited by heartbreaking tragedy, they lost their young child and Mr Garrick had been in an accident where he had lost both legs. It seems that he had enough and could not face the difficult and painful future he faced. Roberta Garrick, the widow, is distraught and being comforted by the Reverend Peter McKay. All seems to be in order and makes sense. And yet....something does not feel quite right to Serena. Has her intuition let her down? Reverend McKay is a man who is well acquainted with despair to the point he feels he no longer has faith and is looking for any port to shelter in. He is a man that is struggling for his soul given the situation he finds himself in. With no-one willing to back her, Serena finds herself on her own as she digs deeper. Then there is another apparent suicide....what exactly is going on? What we have is a tense psychological thriller where the layers are uncovered slowly and expertly until the octane fuelled finale.
Another superb read from the author. It is beautifully written and plotted. You get drawn into the story immediately and don't stop until its finished. The characters are finely drawn and feel so real. Serena's family situation is authentic. Cannot recommend this book highly enough. Brilliant read.

Serena Flanagan, still dealing with the left mover effects of her previous case, attending counseling, her marriage in jeopardy is called to the scene of an apparent suicide. Henry Garrick, severely injured, bedridden since a horrific auto accident, has apparently taken a fatal overdose of morphine. But did, he? Serena, has her doubts but they are shared by none of the other officers involved in the case.
Serena, is a character who is very easy in which to relate, trying to balance her job which she is very good at, with her marriage and her young children, problems that many of us share. She meets the Reverend McKay, Henry's pastor and good friend and solace to his new widow, Roberta. This book has so much going on beneath the surface, the Reverend has lost his faith since the death of his wife, eight years precious, while Serena trying to save her marriage, regains hers with his help. Of course, things are not as they appear, not in the lives of those closest to the victim, nor in those surrounding him. This is an excellent police procedural but also an excellent characters study. Just the right combination of the two to keep the reader's interest. Only the second in series, this is a good series to start if one is looking to pick up a new one. Will anxiously await the next, Stuart Neville has come up with a winning combination.

What a nice surprise this was!
I don't normally read Crime Novels and certainly not in a series but was surprised by how much I enjoyed So Say the Fallen.
This book is the second in the new crime series featuring Detective Chief Inspector Serena Flanagan, by Stuart Neville and while I hadn't read the first in the series and thought I was going to be at a disadvantage, but I found quite quickly that this book can certainly be read as a stand alone.
The fallout from DCI Serena Flanagan’s last major case, which saw her home invaded and her husband attacked, has left the previously close family fractured.
When Serena is asked to sign off the suicide of a severely disabled local businessman, she finds herself envying the grieving widow’s comfortable life and devoted marriage, until the widow’s close relationship with the local reverend start to sound an alarm. But with a clean crime scene and no evidence to back her up, have Serena’s instincts led her down the wrong path?
Having read quite a few psychological thrillers in the past year I had become disillusioned with what I have been reading as they all seem to be trying too hard and end up either been predictable with half hearted storylines or just so far fetched to be believable. So I decided to read a few good old fashioned style thrillers to get me back on track and I have really enjoyed a couple back to basic thrillers of late, where the writing and character development are well crafted and plot lines are well thought out and interesting and this is exactly what So Say the Fallen has to offer the reader.
The book is a real page turner and a well constructed thriller, the characters are believable and the plot is strong. DCI Serena Flanagan’s flawed character, makes her more appealing to readers.
I look forward to other Stuart Neville novels to add to my list.

This is Neville's second Serena Flanagan, Belfast Chief Deputy Inspector, novel and it is a winner in every sense of the world. Flanagan is a nuanced character who tries to balance her demanding job and her family. She feels like she is failing at both and yet keeps trying to find some way to have a satisfactory life in both aspects. The marriage is still reeling from a traumatic event from the first book but it is not necessary to have read it to enjoy this one.
Flanagan is called in to investigate a supposed suicide of a successful car dealer who was horribly maimed in a car accident months ago. Everyone assumes he can no longer deal with the pain and so he takes his life. Flanagan is suspicious though of the bereaved widow and the comforting priest. Something is wrong but she can't put her finger on it. She keeps digging and finds a Pandora box of secrets. At first I thought the plot was too simple but then I realized it was just good writing. It doesn't rely on bells and whistles or improbable coincidences. What happens in the story makes sense. It's logical and believable. It's a breath of fresh air of a story that could actually happen.
The supporting characters are well drawn and it is easy to understand their motives and how they got involved in the plot. I loved the sense of place and much of it takes place in Lisburn, 8 miles from Belfast. Lisburn is the birthplace of the Irish Linen industry and figures nowhere in the story. It's just an interesting bit of trivia. I loved the descriptions of the old church and other buildings. The oldest building in my town is 90 years old and condemned.
For those of you who love a well-written mystery, this should be added to reading list. It's a fast and easy read and draws you in.. I could barely put it down as I sat up until 3:30 am to finish it. That's good writing.

Another solid crime piece from Stuart Neville, who happens to be one of my favorite crime writers.
I’ll leave the plot summary for the book blurb because here is something else that I want to discuss. Neville has created an authentic character in DCI Serena Flanagan, who faces challenges on the job and at home. Like many women in the workforce, she is conflicted between the need to do her job and also be present for her husband and children. Her family is not always understanding of the notion that she is at least partially what she does for a living. That she loves her job and needs to do the work in order to also be the best person, the best wife and mother that she can be. I don’t have personal experience in this area but I have friends who deal with it every day. All I can say is that it seems like he nails this issue… and is it wrong of me to be a bit surprised that man could write about this so well?
"I know this is difficult to understand," she said, "but I have a very important, very difficult job. A lot of people depend on me to do this job. And sometimes that means I can't be around as much as I want to be. I know that's difficult for you, that you think it's not fair, but I can't let those people down."
So Say the Fallen is the second book featuring DCI Serena Flanagan, but the sixth in a more general series of Belfast-based crime stories. These books share the qualities of excellent plotting and pacing and they take you in directions you might not expect. Recommended to my crime-loving friends.

So Say The Fallen – A Compassionate Heroine
So Say The Fallen is the second in the new crime series featuring Detective Chief Inspector Serena Flanagan, from Stuart Neville all based in Northern Ireland. She is a determined, hardworking detective, who has to work in a tough part of the UK, where the guilty are not necessarily locked up but walking free.
Serena Flanagan is having a crisis in her life and even more so with her family, who rarely see her due to her job. She is having counselling about recent events when after 5 years someone she shot in self-defence finally dies after being on life support.
When she is sent to be the senior officer at what seems like a straight forward suicide of a severely disabled local business man. She looks around the house and sees that the widow has a very comfortable life, somewhat envying her lifestyle and with the local parish rector in tow to calm and counsellor her.
Whatever happens everything in the suicide of Harry Garrick the more Serena asks questions, just the routine questions she has to ask, the more she feels something is not quite right. The problem is that there is a clean crime scene, and evidence seems to be non-existent. When she sees that Peter McKay the local rector seems to be smitten with Roberta Garrick more than he should be she has her suspicions.
So begins a quest to find the truth in the face of opposition from the local politicians, the local church congregation and colleagues who are sceptical. At the same time her family seems to be falling about around her and she cannot understand how or why. But she knows she has a fight on her hands to find the truth and at the same time keep her family together.
This is a story of highs and lows, a reflection on our daily lives and all the things you expect from a crime novel, love and loss, temptation and those that give in to it. Will she find the truth and be able to save her family and remain in her job that defines her are all part of this novel.
A good book, an interesting and complex character in Serena Flanagan, well written, and the continued development of this series, will I am sure see it go from strength to strength. Stuart Neville is showing why he is one of the most exciting writers of the moment.

Μπορεί να είχε τα πάντα, ένα μεγάλο πολυτελές σπίτι, μια νέα και όμορφη γυναίκα, μια επιτυχημένη επιχείρηση.
Η Φλάναγκαν πιάνει τον εαυτό της να ζηλεύει την άν��τη ζωή της χήρας, που δεν έχει καμία σχέση με τις δυσκολίες που η ίδια αντιμετωπίζει. Όμως ερευνώντας το περιβάλλον και το δωμάτιο που βρήκαν το νεκρό επιχειρηματία, υποψίες την κάνουν να θέλει να το ερευνήσει περισσότερο. Η έρευνα την οδηγεί προς τη χήρα και τον εφημέριο της περιοχής. Οι δυο τους φαίνεται να έχουν μια πολύ στενή σχέση που στο μυαλό της Φλάναγκαν οδηγεί κάπου πολύ συγκεκριμένα. Ψάχνει για στοιχεία που δυσκολεύεται πολύ να βρει ενώ κάποιοι προσπαθούν να της κλείσουν τις πόρτες και να την ωθήσουν να καταλήξει πως πρόκειται για αυτοκτονία, όπως όλα δείχνουν εξ αρχής. Όμως εκείνη θα συνεχίσει να ψάχνει ενώ την ίδια στιγμή κοντεύει να χάσει την οικογένειά της.
Η Φάναγκαν έχει επιβιώσει από καρκίνο του μαστού και από μια επίθεση στην οικογένειά της που παραλίγο να κοστίσει τη ζωή στον άντρα της. Η κατάσταση είναι πολύ τεταμένη στο σπίτι. Η σχέση του ζευγαριού δεν είναι στα καλύτερά της, τα παιδιά της είναι νευρικά και δυστυχισμένα, η ίδια παρακολουθείται από ψυχολόγο ενώ ο άντρας της ξυπνάει μες στη νύχτα από τους εφιάλτες που άφησε πίσω του η επίθεση. Όμως η Φλάναγκαν δεν μπορεί να μην κάνει τη δουλειά της με αποτέλεσμα να αφιερώνει περισσότερο χρόνο στις υποθέσεις που ερευνάει από ότι στην ίδια της την οικογένεια, και εν τέλη να μην κάνει κανένα ουσιαστικό βήμα ώστε να βελτιωθεί η κατάσταση. Πρέπει κάτι να κάνει όμως ώστε να μην χάσει τους ανθρώπους που αγαπάει από κοντά της.
Η ηρωίδα είναι λιγάκι προβληματική, όπως θα περίμενε κανείς από τους αστυνομικούς της Βόρειας Ιρλανδίας, όπου τίποτα δεν είναι εύκολο και υπάρχει μια κάποια ιστορία. Όμως τα προβλήματά της δεν είναι οι καταχρήσεις, αλλά προβλήματα που μπορεί να αντιμετώπιζε μια οποιαδήποτε άλλη εργαζόμενη γυναίκα που προσπαθεί να ισορροπήσει την εργασία με την οικογένειά της.
Η ιστορία της Φλάναγκαν και της έρευνάς της εν γένει διαβάζεται απνευστί. Βλέπουμε τα στοιχεία που προκαλούν τις υποψίες της, μαθαίνουμε τι ακριβώς συνέβη λίγο πριν το θάνατο του επιχειρηματία, όμως αυτό που δε βλέπουμε είναι ένα παρελθόν που υποβόσκει και που σιγά σιγά ανακαλύπτει η Φλάναγκαν. Η επιμονή της και η διαίσθησή της είναι αυτά που την κάνουν καλή στη δουλειά της και που τελικά τη βοηθούν να λύσει την υπόθεση. Αυτή η επιμονή όμως είναι που παίζει και καταλυτικό ρόλο στην κατάσταση της οικογένειάς της.
Ήξερα ότι θα μου αρέσει σαν βιβλίο. Αυτό που δεν περίμενα είναι ότι δε θα θέλω να το αφήσω από τα χέρια μου.

Η σχέση του ζευγαριού δεν είναι στα καλύτερά της, τα παιδιά της είναι νευρικά και δυστυχισμένα, η ίδια παρακολουθείται από ψυχολόγο ενώ ο άντρας της ξυπνάει μες στη νύχτα από τους εφιάλτες που άφησε πίσω του η επίθεση. Όμως η Φλάναγκαν δεν μπορεί να μην κάνει τη δουλειά της με αποτέλεσμα να αφιερώνει περισσότερο χρόνο στις υποθέσεις που ερευνάει από ότι στην ίδια της την οικογένεια, και εν τέλη να μην κάνει κανένα ουσιαστικό βήμα ώστε να βελτιωθεί η κατάσταση. Πρέπει κάτι να κάνει όμως ώστε να μην χάσει τους ανθρώπους που αγαπάει από κοντά της.
Η ηρωίδα είναι λιγάκι προβληματική, όπως θα περίμενε κανείς από τους αστυνομικούς της Βόρειας Ιρλανδίας, όπου τίποτα δεν είναι εύκολο και υπάρχει μια κάποια ιστορία. Όμως τα προβλήματά της δεν είναι οι καταχρήσεις, αλλά προβλήματα που μπορεί να αντιμετώπιζε μια οποιαδήποτε άλλη εργαζόμενη γυναίκα που προσπαθεί να ισορροπήσει την εργασία με την οικογένειά της.
Η ιστορία της Φλάναγκαν και της έρευνάς της εν γένει διαβάζεται απνευστί. Βλέπουμε τα στοιχεία που προκαλούν τις υποψίες της, μαθαίνουμε τι ακριβώς συνέβη λίγο πριν το θάνατο του επιχειρηματία, όμως αυτό που δε βλέπουμε είναι ένα παρελθόν που υποβόσκει και που σιγά σιγά ανακαλύπτει η Φλάναγκαν. Η επιμονή της και η διαίσθησή της είναι αυτά που την κάνουν καλή στη δουλειά της και που τελικά τη βοηθούν να λύσει την υπόθεση. Αυτή η επιμονή όμως είναι που παίζει και καταλυτικό ρόλο στην κατάσταση της οικογένειάς της.
Ήξερα ότι θα μου αρέσει σαν βιβλίο. Αυτό που δεν περίμενα είναι ότι δε θα θέλω να το αφήσω από τα χέρια μου.

Good story and good characters. You really get to know DCI Serena Flanagan as a real person and human being, policewoman, wife and mother, trying to keep all the balls in the air. It's exhausting work and Serena struggles to keep her family together.
She is called out to the apparent suicide of a severely disabled man and asked to sign off on it quickly. She can't put her finger on the reason but she has niggling doubts about his death. The widow, Roberta Garrick, seems altogether too perfect and to distraught to speak to the police properly. She is closely attended by the local priest, father Peter McKay who seems a bit shifty.
As her marriage gets rockier, Serena picks away at the priest, the widow and the widow's background until she makes a shocking discovery. A great story really, not twisty as such but great detail on the characters. I guess the trick is to include enough detail but not too much to slow the story down and I think Neville could tweak this balance just a little.

DCI Serena Flanagan shares the characteristics we often associate with detectives and cops in fiction, film and television. She has a strong streak of defiance which sends her off to find answers contrary to the orders of her superiors, and has difficulty balancing her job and personal life. In the second DCI Serena Flanagan novel, Serena has alienated her husband and two young children. While there are references to events in the first novel, not much detail is provided, and readers who haven't read it may not find sufficient detail in this novel to understand the couple's growing separation. Serena is not an introspective person, which may actually help her to be better at her job. She is a woman of action and reaction, not of introspection and reflection.
Flanagan arrives at the scene of an apparent suicide. Like all good cops, she somewhat reluctantly accepts the pathologist's conclusion. With years of paramilitary activity, and heightened security, I don't imagine it is easy for someone to appear out of "nowhere" and not be scrutinized. In this case, it is possible that the lonely millionaire she married was besotted and protective of his wife. However I didn't understand why Flanagan didn't immediately pursue this line of inquiry.
The setting of the novel is the imaginary small town of Morganstown. I hadn't heard of it, and checked to see if it exists. Lisburn, the nearby city, provides a clue to the geography and setting of the area southwest of Belfast, and there is no Morganstown anywhere in Northern Ireland.

Solid police procedural from Neville, the second in a series, involving the death of a man crippled in an automobile accident, apparently from a self-induced overdose of morphine. His wife and the local minister attend to the death and, soon after, DCI Flanagan suspects foul play. There's not much mystery here as to what really happened, as that is revealed in full detail early on. The real mystery involves the motivations behind the wife and her secret past. Strong characterizations, the norm from Neville, and a never-dull storyline propel the plot to a gripping conclusion. Not much original here but it's executed so well you won't care. 4 stars. Highly recommended.

The first book in this series blew my socks off so I couldn't wait to get my hands on this one. It felt like a great deal of anticipation with no payoff. You know who the villain is from the beginning so there was not much suspense. I still very much like the DCI Flanagan character so I will likely read the next by this author where Flanagan is the main character. For such a strong female protagonist, her husband is a bit of a namby-pamby and I don't enjoy his churlishness at all. Overall a good but not great read.

I am fast becoming a fan of Neville, he pulls out solid stories that are engaging and entertaining. In this book we are back with Flanagan as she investigates the suicide of a man who is an amputee. The story is interesting but also Flanagan who is majorly flawed and appreciates this in her self retrospection. None of us are perfect but it is interesting to see someone battle with their demons. Back to the suicide, the widow then becomes embroiled with the parish reverend and Flanagan tries her best to uncover their involvement whilst examining her own life. Definitely worth picking up this book.

This was a really interestingly different slant on the 'police procedural' - there was a certain quiet determination about it, a refreshing simplicity and groundedness about the nature of the plot, and characters which generally behaved in a more believable and realistic manner than many of the more 'seat of your pants' crime thrillers I've read. This isn't to say it is cosy in any sense - not at all.. it was actually really quite depressing and sad, desperate people in desperate circumstances, relationships strained, lies and deceit. Hard to pin-point why I appreciated this so, but three hundred pages read in a day must demonstrate something was damned right.

It's always a pleasure to write a review of a book so exciting and well written that it consumes you in its storyline and loses you in its content. "So say the Fallen" is also of special interest to me as I am a Northern Ireland ex pat living on mainland UK and it's great to enjoy a story not centred around the troubled history of the province rather a well written and well crafted police thriller.
Although on introduction you may be forgiven for believing that this is nothing but a routine murder investigation for the enigmatic Detective Chief Inspector Serena Flanagan but dig deeper and you may be surprised to learn this is more a study and exposure of human emotion, betrayal, conscience and guilt. All good stories must have believable characters with questions and situations that a discerning and intelligent reader can relate to and in this Stuart Neville exceeds. In this finely crafted tale he creates a tour de force edge of the seat thriller that leaves you begging for more ( a little clichéd but truthful statement)
Henry Garrick is dead. The evidence appears to point to suicide from a morphine overdose. Although a wealthy man Garrick was bedridden following a near fatal road accident and is tended to on a daily basis by his young and beautiful wife Roberta. To maintain her sanity Roberta looks for comfort and support in the close-knit community of Morganstown and in particular the Reverend Peter McKay. He has his own tragic past as his wife Maggie died suddenly on the kitchen floor from a brain hemorrhage....."But Maggie McKay, who blushed when he touched her, who cried at Audrey Hepburn movies, who was kind and sweet to the very root of her being, everything that she was had ceased to exist. Now she was a vessel of organs and blood and bones and skin and nothing more."
The deeply flawed and sad McKay is drawn to the beauty and danger offered by Roberta Garrick, a decision that will result in him questioning the basis of his faith and take him on a journey with inevitable and tragic consequences.
Flanagan is troubled over Garrick's apparent suicide and the unexpected death of their daughter Erin Garrick on a Spanish beach some years ago....could there be a connection?..."This is Detective Chief Inspector Serena Flanagan, Police Service of Northern Ireland, based in Lisburn. I need to discuss the case of a child, a British National, who drowned at the beach in Barcelona four years ago. Her name was Erin Garrick, her parents were Henry and Roberta Garrick."

Not with an explosive row, nor a discovered affair. No final betrayal to sever them. Just a slow decline of bitter reproaches and fake apologies until there was nothing left but a festering resentment between them all."
This story is about life; its highs and lows; love and loss; temptation and guilt. It questions the reality of our everyday existence looking at what we perceive as important may not necessarily be so. It shows a world in which only the strong, resolute and determined can hope to survive and concludes with a question that we all hope can be answered in the positive...."We're going to be all right, aren't we?"
I received a gratis copy of this superb thriller from edelweiss in exchange for an honest review and that is what I have written.

Ρέουσα γραφή με έναν χαρακτήρα, την Αρχιεπιθεωρήτρια Σερίνα Φλάναγκαν που την έχουμε συναντήσει ξανά σε μιαν άλλη σειρά του συγγραφέα The Final Silence, σε μια αστυνομική στορία που καταλαβαίνουμε από πολύ νωρίς (γιατί ο συγγραφέας θέλει) ποιος ευθύνεται για τι. Άρα δίνεται βάρος στο σασπένς της υπόθεσης και στην εξοικίωση με τα θέματα προσωπικής φύσεως που αντιμετωπίζει η Φλάναγκαν. Άκρως ικανοιοιητικό ανάγνωσμα...

"Λόγια νεκρών", το δεύτερο και τελευταίο βιβλίο της σειράς "DCI Serena Flanagan" του Stuart Neville, με πρωταγωνίστρια την Σερίνα Φλάναγκαν που όπως ίσως να θυμάστε από την αναφορά μας στην παρουσίαση του πρώτου βιβλίου της σειράς, "Δεσμοί αίματος", είχαμε πρωτοσυναντήσει σε μια άλλη σειρά βιβλίων του συγγραφέα, και πιο συγκεκριμένα στη σειρά "Jack Lennon" και στο βιβλίο "Πέπλο σιωπής", που ολοκλήρωσε μεν τη δική του σειρά, αλλά αποτέλεσε και την έμπνευση για την έναρξη αυτής της νέας, έστω κι αν η λογοτεχνική της πορεία δεν έμελλε να είναι πολύ μεγάλη. Σε κάθε περίπτωση, όμως, παραμένει ενδιαφέρουσα και ουσιώδεις και αυτό είναι που μετράει περισσότερο από την έκταση, καμιά φορά.
Η Σερίνα Φλάναγκαν δεν διανύει την καλύτερή της περίοδο. Ακόμα προσπαθεί να ξεπεράσει το βάρος των ενοχών που νιώθει, εξαιτίας των θανάτων στην υπόθεση που είχε αναλάβει και που δεν κατέληξε και πολύ καλά, παρακολουθώντας συνεδρίες που δεν έχουν τα επιθυμητά αποτελέσματα, ενώ την ίδια στιγμή ζει με τον φόβο πως η οικογένειά της θα διαλυθεί, με τον άντρα της να υποφέρει από εφιάλτες εξαιτίας μιας άλλης υποθέσής της, ενώ τα παιδιά της απομακρύνονται όλο και περισσότερο από κοντά της, πλησιάζοντας όλο και περισσότερο τον πατέρα τους. Όλη αυτή η κατάσταση μπορεί να είναι στρεσογόνα για την Σερίνα, μας επιτρέπει όμως να έχουμε μια πιο ξεκάθαρη εικόνα του ποια πραγματικά είναι, τι συμβαίνει μέσα στο μυαλό και στην ψυχή της, υπενθυμίζοντάς μας πως είναι ένας άνθρωπος, όπως κι εμείς, έχει τα ίδια προβλήματα με όλους και έτσι πρέπει να την αντιμετωπίζουμε. Ως έναν άνθρωπο με σάρκα, οστά και μπελάδες στο κεφάλι του, μια προσέγγιση πολύ γήινη και ρεαλιστική.
Αφήνοντας στην άκρη τον πιο προσωπικό παράγοντα της ιστορίας μας, περνάμε στο αστυνομικό της σκέλος, με την Σερίνα να καλείται να ερευνήσει την υπόθεση της αυτοκτονίας ενός επιχειρηματία της περιοχής, που μετά τον θάνατο του νεότερου γιου του και τον σοβαρό τραυματισμό αυτού, που οδήγησε στο να χάσει και τα δυο του πόδια, όλα δείχνουν πως δεν μπόρεσε να διαχειριστεί την κατάρρευση της έως τότε όμορφης και τακτοποιημένης ζωής του. Κι ενώ όλα δείχνουν να βγάζουν νόημα, η Σερίνα αρχίζει ν' αμφιβάλλει πως τα πράγματα είναι τόσο απλά όσο δείχνουν, ειδικά ότα<πν αντιλαμβάνεται πως η χήρα του επιχειρηματία έχει πολύ στενές σχέσεις με τον εφημέριο της ενορίας, γεγονός όχι μόνο επιλήψιμο, αλλά και ύποπτο, έστω κι αν δεν υπάρχει καμία απόδειξη για όσα η ίδια έχει μέσα στο μυαλό της.
Γινόμαστε μάρτυρες, λοιπόν, του αγώνα της Σερίνα να ισορροπήσει ανάμεσα στην καθημερινότητά της και στη δουλειά της, ανάμεσα στα προβλήματα που επιφέρει στη ζωή της και η μία και η άλλη. Προσπαθεί να είναι σωστή σε όλα, αλλά τελικά δεν καταφέρνει να είναι πουθενά, πασχίζοντας να ξεπεράσει τους σκοπέλους εκείνους που της βάζουν εμπόδια, όχι για να αποδείξει στους άλλους ότι μπορεί, μα πάνω απ' όλα στον ίδιο της τον εαυτό. Ο Neville έχει καταφέρει να βρει την απόλυτη ισορροπία ανάμεσα σε αυτά τα δύο άκρα, προσφέροντάς μας μια αστυνομική περιπέτεια μυστηρίου διανθισμένη από έντονο προσωπικό δράμα, με το ανθρώπινο στοιχείο, σε όλες του τις προεκτάσεις, να παίζει τον πρώτο και τον σημαντικότερο ρόλο.
Ο Neville έχει χτίσει μια πολύ ωραία δομημένη, αφηγηματικά και όχι μόνο, αστυνομική ιστορία, η εξέλιξη της οποίας έχει πολύ καλό ρυθμό, την απαιτούμενη ένταση δεδομένου του είδους της -χωρίς υπερβολές και ακρότητες, σε όλα τα επίπεδα-, δίνοντας περισσότερη έμφαση στη ροή παρά στον εντυπωσιασμό του αναγνώστη. Και καμιά φορά αυτές τις ιστορίες είναι που τις απολαμβάνεις λίγο περισσότερο, ίσως γιατί δεν δοκιμάζουν τα όρια των αντοχών σου, αλλά γιατί σε κάνουν μέρος τους και σου αφήνουν χώρο να σκεφτείς. Είναι κρίμα που δεν ακολούθησαν κι άλλα βιβλία με κεντρική ηρωίδα την Σερίνα, αλλά έστω και αυτά τα δύο έφτασαν για να μας συστήσουν μια προσωπικότητα που αξίζει να γνωρίσεις.

Ο Neville έχει χτίσει μια πολύ ωραία δομημένη, αφηγηματικά και όχι μόνο, αστυνομική ιστορία, η εξέλιξη της οποίας έχει πολύ καλό ρυθμό, την απαιτούμενη ένταση δεδομένου του είδους της -χωρίς υπερβολές και ακρότητες, σε όλα τα επίπεδα-, δίνοντας περισσότερη έμφαση στη ροή παρά στον εντυπωσιασμό του αναγνώστη. Και καμιά φορά αυτές τις ιστορίες είναι που τις απολαμβάνεις λίγο περισσότερο, ίσως γιατί δεν δοκιμάζουν τα όρια των αντοχών σου, αλλά γιατί σε κάνουν μέρος τους και σου αφήνουν χώρο να σκεφτείς. Είναι κρίμα που δεν ακολούθησαν κι άλλα βιβλία με κεντρική ηρωίδα την Σερίνα, αλλά έστω και αυτά τα δύο έφτασαν για να μας συστήσουν μια προσωπικότητα που αξίζει να γνωρίσεις.

2,5/5 αστεράκια - με το ζόρι.
Δεύτερη επαφή μου με την αρχιεπιθεωρήτρια Σερίνα Φλάναγκαν, η οποία έρχεται να επιβεβαιώσει πως δεν ταιριάζουν οι αύρες μας με τίποτα! Έχοντας διαβάσει το πρώτο βιβλίο (το οποίο θυμάμαι ελάχιστα και ελπίζω κάποια στιγμή να ξεχάσω εντελώς), έδωσα μια δεύτερη ευκαιρία με ετούτο εδώ. Αλλά δεν... δεν...
Η αλήθεια είναι πως γενικά δεν το 'χω με τους Ιρλανδούς συγγραφείς. Δεν μπορώ να ταυτιστώ με το ύφος γραφής, το background τους ή την ιδιοσυγκρασία τους. Και έχω διαβάσει βιβλία τους κυριολεκτικά μετρημένα στα δάχτυλα του ενός χεριού. Οπότε, μπορεί εν μέρει η άποψη που έχω σχηματίσει γι' αυτούς να είναι άδικη ή ελλιπής, αλλά τουλάχιστον παραδέχομαι πως δεν έχω μπει στον κόπο να τους πολυμελετήσω κιόλας και απλά καταθέτω την αίσθηση που μου αφήνει το βιβλίο που διαβάζω.
Για το συγκεκριμένο βιβλίο, τώρα, ψάχνω να βρω κάτι καλό και στο στόρυ και στην ηρωίδα και δεν μπορώ! Βρήκα πολλά κοινά με το πρώτο βιβλίο, πράγματα που δεν μου άρεσαν εκεί και δεν μου αρέσουν κι εδώ...
Να πω για την πλοκή; Να πω. Αιφνίδιος θάνατος ενός επιχειρηματία, βαριά τραυματισμένου και κατάκοιτου. Μαντέψτε ποιος/ποια είναι ο/η ένοχος. Δεν θα πω καν το όνομα, αλλά θα πω πως ναι, το βρήκατε. Αυτό που σκέφτεστε είναι! Και το κίνητρο; Επίσης αυτό που σκέφτεστε. Είχε βοήθεια ο/η δολοφόνος κι αν ναι, από ποιον; Ναι, αυτό ακριβώς που σκέφτεστε, ξανά. Ωραία. Έχοντας αυτά τα δεδομένα ήδη από την αρχή, βρείτε τώρα εσείς την όρεξη να διαβάσετε με αγωνία(;) και τις επόμενες 360κάτι σελίδες. Καμία ανατροπή, ούτε με το κυάλι δεν τη βλέπεις. Καμία έκπληξη. Όλα προβλέψιμα μέχρι βαρεμάρας. Μέχρι την τελευταία σελίδα.
Να επισημάνω εδώ πως έχω διαβάσει και άλλα βιβλία που ο δράστης ενός φόνου αποκαλύπτεται σχετικά νωρίς, αλλά τουλάχιστον εκεί έχω βρει άλλα στοιχεία που έχουν κρατήσει το ενδιαφέρον μου - κάποια ίντριγκα, κάποιου άλλου είδους ανατροπή, κάποια αναπάντεχη εξέλιξη που οδηγεί την πλοκή αλλού. Εδώ δεν συμβαίνει τίποτα τέτοιο. Ψυχανεμίζεσαι τι θα διαβάσεις στο επόμενο κεφάλαιο, συμβαίνει κάτι και κουνάς το κεφάλι σου με ύφος "ναι, φυσικά, επόμενο ήταν να συμβεί αυτό...". Κι αυτό από την αρχή μέχρι το τέλος, ειλικρινά! Ε συγγνώμη, προσωπικά δεν μπορώ ούτε να εκτιμήσω μια τέτοια ιστορία όπως της πρέπει ούτε να πω πως μου αρέσει.
Ο πιο ενδιαφέρων (μην πω ο μόνος) χαρακτήρας για μένα ήταν ο εφημέριος, του οποίου το ψυχογράφημα βρήκα και το πιο ψαγμένο και βαθύ απ' όλα. Βέβαια και η δική του πορεία είναι προδιαγεγραμμένη εξαρχής, φαίνεται πού πάει το πράγμα σε ό,τι τον αφορά, αλλά τουλάχιστον έχει ενδιαφέρον η πορεία του προς τα εκεί.
Όσο για τη Φλάναγκαν, το δεύτερο βιβλίο ήρθε να επιβεβαιώσει την άποψη που είχα ήδη σχηματίσει για εκείνη. Απλά δεν μπορώ να τη συμπαθήσω με τίποτα! Εκτιμώ την επιμονή της και την αφοσίωση στη δουλειά της, αλλά δεν μπορώ να πω πως εκτιμώ τον χαρακτήρα της: τον τρόπο σκέψης της, τη συμπεριφορά της, την απροθυμία της για συνεργασία, την ξεροκεφαλιά της, τον εκνευρισμό της με ό,τι και όποιον δεν χορεύει στον ρυθμό της, το ότι θέλει να γίνεται πάντα το δικό της με τον δικό της τρόπο. Σίγουρα είναι ένας τέρμα ανθρώπινος χαρακτήρας (πώς θα μπορούσε να είναι αλλιώς, με τόσα κουσούρια που έχει;!), όμως αυτό δεν νομίζω πως σημαίνει απαραίτητα πως πρέπει να είναι και αρεστός ή θετικός. Λυπάμαι που το λέω, αλλά εγώ προσωπικά δεν θα την ήθελα για μητέρα, για φίλη, για συνάδελφο, για αδελφή.
Και κάτι άλλο που μου έχει κάνει εντύπωση και στα δύο βιβλία που έχω διαβάσει: ενώ ομολογουμένως συμβάλλει τα μέγιστα στη λύση της υπόθεσης (άσχετο που στο τέλος, κάθε φορά, κάτι κάνει και κάποιον ενοχλεί και χάνει τελικά την υπόθεση μέσα από τα χέρια της), κάθε φορά στο τέλος θεωρώ ότι εντάξει, και να έλειπε από την εξίσωση, δεν θα έτρεχε και κάτι! Ότι θα μπορούσε να λυθεί και από κάποιον άλλον. Ότι δεν είναι αναντικατάστατη. Και σκέφτομαι επίσης (για να μη λέτε ότι δεν τη συμπονώ έστω τόσο δα) ότι μάλλον δεν αξίζει αυτή η συνεχής κόντρα και η ένταση με την οικογένειά της για ένα τέτοιο αποτέλεσμα. Για να μην την εκτιμούν όσο πρέπει, για να της βάζουν φρένο, για να φτάνει κάθε τόσο στην πηγή και να βλέπει τελικά κάποιον άλλον να πίνει νερό. Και το αναφέρω αυτό γιατί έχω διαβάσει άπειρα αστυνομικά και πρώτη φορά συναντώ έναν κεντρικό ήρωα -αστυνομικό/ντετέκτιβ/επιθεωρητή/ό,τι να 'ναι και σκέφτομαι ότι δεν έχει τη στόφα για να είναι πρωταγωνιστής! Νομίζω πως η Σερίνα Φλάναγκαν είναι η πρώτη ηρωίδα που τη θεωρώ "λίγη" για αυτόν τον ρόλο!
Δεν έχω κάτι άλλο να πω, και συγγνώμη αν αυτή η κριτική δυσαρεστήσει τυχόν θαυμαστές της Φλάναγκαν ή του Neville. Περί ορέξεως κολοκυθόπιτα, λένε, και είμαι σίγουρη πως πολλοί θα βρουν το βιβλίο αυτό υπέροχο. Δεκτό και σεβαστό. Δεν είναι όλα τα βιβλία για όλους, ούτε όλοι οι αναγνώστες είμαστε για όλα τα βιβλία. Για τη συγκεκριμένη σειρά του Neville, τουλάχιστον, εγώ σίγουρα δεν είμαι!

Stuart Neville's debut book The Twelve, is possibly the best debut I have read. With his subsequent books I have not been disappointed and he is an author that I will have to read everything he writes.
So say the Fallen is the 2nd in the DCI Serena Flanagan series. A woman struggling to balance career and family. When she is called into what appears to be a routine suicide, Serena sees a different picture and feels something is off. Although the victim had been in a horrendous car crash that had left him severely damaged, he by all means was upbeat and positive. As she tries to dig deeper she risks being thrown off the case but her persistence starts to uncover a horrible truth.

This is a sizzling DCI Flanagan thriller, set in Northern Ireland. The dogged detective doesn't buy the apparent suicide of a wealthy church- goer. She throws herself into the case, earning no thanks from her colleagues or understanding from her neglected family. What will break first- the case, or her family relationships?

A good book with some interesting plot twists. Couldn't piece it all together which to me makes a good story.
