It's LIVE!!!

LIV

I’ve always been a healer, a saver of lives, until the day my life is taken from me. A drunk driver destroyed my life and got away with a slap on the wrist.

Where children used to be happy to see me, they now run from me.

I want him to pay, to suffer just like I’m suffering. I want him dead.

I used to be scared of my neighbor. But since the switch in me is flipped and I’ve become this monster, I’m drawn to him like a moth is drawn to a flame. He’ll burn me - just like the flame will turn the moth into nothing but ashes – and I’m okay with that as long as I get my revenge.

MASON

I deal in death. Killer. Assassin. Mercenary. I go by many names.

I miss the smell of baking that used to come from her apartment. I see the hate festering in her eyes, killing the light that shone so bright. It lit the darkness in me.

I used to be a killer until that car hit her. It woke something in me, a need to save her.

How does a wolf save a lamb without the darkness in him devouring the little light that’s left in her?

Warning: This is an over the top, insta-love, hot as hell HEA with a twist of kinkiness. HEA are always more satisfying when the characters have to fight for it. If you're looking for a jaw-dropping, panty-melting page turner then jump right in. This is a Standalone Novella with NO cheating.

When I started this I was hooked, it flowed freely, I connected with the storyline and the characters as I moved through the book the only thing I wished for more was more background data on Mason, his character really intrigued me so I kind of wished the story delved more into his history. But overall this as per usual by this author was a great hot little number.

MERCENARY: Beautiful, vibrant happy go lucky Olivia who's living her dream job working as a Paediatric nurse, has always noticed the mysterious dark, broody man Mason Crowe in apartment 3C adjacent from hers but she tries to avoid him at all costs as he gives off a dangerous vibe which unnerves her.

In a blink of an eye Olivia’s world changes from living in the light to hiding in darkness where no one can see her.

Looking in the mirror she doesn’t recognise the scarred, damaged, ugly person staring back at her.

I used to live a fairytale but now I've become the beast instead of being the princess.

Mason is a bit of an enigma, he kills without remorse to those deserving souls on his retribution list
he gathered whilst working within the Social Services sector.

I don't take pleasure in taking someone's life but I do take comfort in the fact that the world is rid of one less monster.

This is an insta-love quick read that will definitely leave you gasping for more. If you're after a panty wet HEA with no cheating then this story is right up your alley. Definitely a #0ne click come release day!! Usually I steer clear of Insta-love books but this author is one of my all time favourites and it was written in such a way that it really didn't come across as insta-love for me it was more of a slow burn love that progressed into more as they got to know each other.

The one thing that was going through my head while reading this book was "should've checked should've checked should've checked the goddamn fucking blurb before I went ahead and ordered the ARC!"

I'm so fucking lazy, that I never even read the "over the top insta-love" warning at the end of the blurb, and for that I cannot even blame the author. In her defense she did mention it.

So it is just what it says, "over the top insta love", and we all know how much I fucking hate any kind of insta-love.

As the story goes, Liv was a children's doctor, when she first met Mason. And she was terrified of him, even though he never does anything to her per-se. And then one day, when she was trying to avoid him, she was hit by a car that destroyed her entire life. Forced to resign from her position as a doctor due to her scars scaring away the children, Liv turns dark, and starts to harbour some really suppressed feelings for the man who crashed into her.

All that while, Mason keeps looking out for her, and helps her come out of her funk by having dinner with her..? Anyways, he is hiding a pretty big secret. Turns out he is an assassin. He kills men who've hurt innocent people like children or their wives.(Although, the author never goes over any instance, like no details whatsoever).

They fall in love and then bla bla bla, she changes him, and shit like that. I'm so sorry for such a cynical tone of the review, it's just that these are the kind of books that annoy the shit out of me, and it was a big case of it's me, not you. Yeah, the author is not to be blamed for my laziness. The only good thing? It was a novella! (Yeah, I was glad it was a novella because I couldn't have tolerated any more of the sugary sweetness.)

This one was hard to rate. Besides a romance, there was a little suspense in the story. I was surprised by how much story the author was able to tell in so few pages, and even though I liked it overall and loved the idea behind it, there were things that I didn't like, too. There was unrealistic insta-love between Liv and Mason and the character development was quite weak. There were more than a few steamy sex scenes and there was angst that got my attention, but at the same time, it was a little bewildering.

In short:
Hero 3/5 | Heroine 3/5 | Plot (Point, Originality) 4/5 | Writing Style 3/5 | Steam 4/5 | Romance 3/5 | Angst-Suspense 3/5 | Darkness 1/5 | Humor 0/5 | Secondary Characters 1/5 | Drama-Conflict 4/5 | Mystery 0/5 | Twists 4/5 | Pacing Fast | Action 4/5

descriptionCOVER REVEAL COMING APRIL 7TH. I'll save my thoughts until then.description

descriptionWhat can I say about this one? I simply loved it. It was a super short novella. It was pretty much insta-lust. It was well written and nicely paced. It had two enjoyable main characters. It had some hot sex scenes. All wrapped up with two epilogues.

description

ALMOST perfect. Due to its short nature, you don't get a ton of character development. I would have liked to read more background on both Liv and Mason (especially.) I also would have liked the plot to have been more fleshed out. More depth etc. There was a lot of potential in the story, and I think this would have made an excellent longer book.

That said, it still gets a HUGE two thumbs up from yours truly.description

Honesty, it's not what I was expecting. It doesn't mean, that this story is anything less or not worth your time. It just.... Well, you see, I was a little disappointed in Olivia. There was this one moment, when she finds out, what Mason is doing at nights. I could understand Olivia's shock. What I was unhappy about, was her thoughts. You see, I have a thing for twisted characters, and if it's a female it's even better. But Olivia wasn't. That could be okay with me, if she just accepted Mason as he was. Monster as some would see him. And she wanted to show him that he's a good man, as she put it, and that he don't need to do, what he was doing. But to me he was already a good man, even thought not what sociaty precepts as right.

Maybe, if I wasn't myself twisted (lol) and didn’t expected something different, it could have been really great story for me. But like I said before, this story isn't bad. It has everything else going for it. Sweet, second chance, hotness.

Wow. This novella is short, sweet and so damn sexy. I didn't know what to expect but the title had me wondering and gave me a little clue. But it's so different from what I expected. It's a tad bit darker and a whole lot more intense. It's not the kind of thing I can explain, it's something you need to experience for yourself. It'll consume you, just like it did me. I couldn't put it down and I finished it in one sitting. It's angsty as hell, but the love & the fall is amazing. It'll be worth it. Praise to Michelle Horst for writing a book that change the way people see dark romance. You'll never see it coming.

Dark and intriguing…

I love a story that takes the ‘norms’ (whatever those really are) and twists them about. The fallout is usually spectacular and, if nothing else, makes for a riveting read. In this case, it all happens!

Liv and Mason are definitely on different life tracks. One saves lives while another takes it away. What happens though when the tables are turned? A life-changing event influences both in ways neither could ever have predicted…

“Mason is not the monster I once thought he was. Just like me, he’s wounded.”

Perspective. The changes in Liv after the accident affect every aspect of her life including her outlook on people. Pain, despair, anger. So much anger! Nothing will be the same again; however, ironically, her perspective of Mason changes. And, curiously, so does Mason’s view of Liv. That is where everything ramped up even more oh so interesting notches…

I LIKED these characters. Are they good or evil? Somehow both? It is a study of all the shades of grey, how good people are not always lily white and evil is not always that straightforward. And, of course, Mason!

Another great read from an author who has written her way, each delicious story at a time, onto my “go to” list. -Diane, 4 stars

I've read a couple of other books by Michelle Horst, and I know for sure that she can write a full length novel that will keep you on the edge of your seat. After reading Mercenary I can safely say that she can pack all that same awesomeness into a novella.

Olivia is a nurse who works with sick children. She lives in an apartment complex, and has a dark and mysterious neighbor named Mason who she avoids like the plague. I mean, he's kind of scary.

That is until tragedy strikes, and so much changes for both Olivia and Mason.

This story was SO GOOD! So many things happened that I was not expecting at all! I went into this not reading the blurb, so you can see why it was a fun ride for me. The love story is actually progressive and it was interesting how it built even though this story is so quick! The naughty bits are so hot. The sad bits are pretty damn sad, and there are even moments of moral life lessons learned. Which when you can squeeze them into a smutty novella, you've got skills.

All in all this was a good read! Quick, hot, sweet, and dark.... what more can you ask for?

***** 4.5 Cranky Stars *****

This is one quickie you won't be disappointed with. This book gives you such hope and love.

Olivia was a happy go lucky woman who worked with kids. They were her shining light. One day life changes forever.

Mason was a man living in the shadows. He seeks vengeance to help others who no longer have a voice. One day his life changes.

These two have always lived next door to each other yet never truly seen each other. They become unlikely allies and well the rest is history. This story is sinfully sweet under a dark layer and sexy. Smouldering clothes catching fire sexy.

Quick or not this is the book for everyone.

A new short novella by Michelle Horst, I read in an hour, but I personally felt Mercenary could have been a a little bit longer in length. I think the jump to 6 months quite near the beginning could have been drawn out, with more explanation. Michelle writes amazing dark books, and given the main male characters profession, this could have been explored more.

It's a good book, not a dark read, but it's not hearts and flowers either.

This was such an awesome, unputdownable novella....Michelle Horst really knows how to write about damaged and dysfunctional men and women who together metamorphose into something stronger and more beautiful..... .I fell head over heels in love with Mason Crowe who, despite his truly dark side, was capable of being so protective and gentle....

They say great things come in small packages and this book proved the point.....the main characters recounted the story and I found myself both absorbed in the development of their relationship, which was a satisfying combination of sweet, romantic and downright dirty, and moved by the tragic events that motivated their life choices......

A short story which packed a punch .... a perfect blend of light and dark......This novella was reviewed for Summer's Eve Reads...

I love Michelle Horst Books, I'm always eagerly awaiting her next release and once again Michelle has delivered another book I couldn't put down.

Mercenary is different from previous books by Michelle, it's quick, hot but still has an alpha hero who has an element of dark mystery.

I love the undertones of a message that run through Michelle Horst's Books like a river until the final waterfall where it all comes together.

Life is a dance between fate and death. In the end, fate prepares us for death, and neither should be seen as the end but rather the continuation of an epic journey to infinity.

Mercenary is told from Mason and Olivia's pov.

Olivia who is complete, loves life, her job working as a nurse with sick children, she lives to work, make a difference, a guardian Angel to the children she cares for until the life as she knows is ripped away by a freak accident leaving her scared & broken inside & out.

Olivia:
I used to live a fairytale life but now I've become the beast instead of being a princess.

Mason, mysterious, dark handsome in the eyes of Olivia, the man from 3B who goes out at night, a man she avoids until he forces his way into her life and not only saves himself but Olivia too.

Mason:
I still see the life fighting to spark in her eyes and so help me God I'm going to make it burn like wildfire again.

A story with an underlying message of finding yourself in the darkest places, sometimes you need to be broken to understand the pain of another.

Mason & Olivia's relationship is hot, passionate and brings healing as they start to heal each other and look forward.

Another brilliant read by Michelle Horst

You only have to say Mercenary, Assassin, Hitman, Killer or anything along that profession as long as it involves killing and you get my full and undivided attention.

It's why this book has gotten my attention in the first place.

But, this fell short in my expectations. I couldn't get a lot of things and some just left a meh feeling for me.

Mason was supposed to be a Mercenary. And I thought he would really be, but he's just a vigilante with a hero complex. He said that working in social services sucked the light out of him and he wanted to avenge those victim. I was also disappointed with how he stalked his last kill, his planning and the way he intended to kill him.

Liv was all sunshine until the accident that stole her life away. And then she was all despair and a ball of negative energy.

I don't know where the insta-love was supposed to be because there was just fear at the start and it actually took long before they had that kind of easy relationship. It was something that grow and bloomed and it wasn't instant in anything.

I didn't feel the connection nor the darkness or I probably alluded myself that this would be dark because of the title and the feel of the cover as well as the blurb, and it all just fell below my expectations that I'm just, I don't know how to feel about it.

An ARC of Mercenary by Michelle Horst was given to me by the author in exchange for an honest review.

Olivia is a young woman who is a nurse and who loves what she does. Her specialty is helping children who are sick. Her heart breaks at their struggles and she tries to make them comfort and happy to the best of her ability. She feels a calling when it comes to the one's she helps. She feels a sense of peace whenever she's at home or at the hospital, but feels sheer terror around Mason, who lives in the apartment across from hers.

Olivia gets a bad feeling around Mason. She doesn't want to have his attention in any way , shape, or form. She gets a dangerous vibe off of him whenever their eyes make contact. She feels that something is off about him. She can't really place her finger on it, but she feels the urge to run away whenever they come into contact with one another. Mason's eyes are what frightens her the most, they have the look of death in them.

Even though Mason is tall ,dark, and handsome, Olivia can't seem to get over her fear of him to appreciate his looks. She just knows she doesn't want to be around him. In her rush to get away from him, Olivia makes an irrational decision that changes her life forever. The decision not only changes her physically, but mentally as well. She only wanted to get away from him, unaware of the consequences of her actions.

Mason knows Olivia had every right to fear him, not to trust him. She's in her current position because of him, partly anyway. He isn't a good person. He kills. He kills all the bad individuals who he feels deserves it, deserves what they have coming. In his mind, it's only fair due to all the harm they had inflicted against society.

Mason's specialty is punishing the guilty, all the monsters lurking in the world. He also deems it necessary to help Olivia. He feels strongly about protecting her, even if means protecting her from herself. However, what Mason doesn't anticipate, is Olivia's need to save him also.

Mercenary by Michelle Horst is a quick read with a well-written plot and I loved it, especially the fire that burned between Mason and Olivia. I also loved the fast-paced of the story. It wasn't a drawn out story which is a good thing in my opinion, particularly for this type of book. I absolutely loved how easily I was able to connect with the main characters which goes to show how much thought Michelle Horst put into developing the characters of Mason and Olivia. I gave this one a five star rating ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐.

Well its a very nice book if you are looking for something different to read .Its a book one can read in one breath ,it will finish and u wont even know it has finished.

Olivia is a Beautiful, vibrant happy go lucky who's living her dream job working as a Paediatric nurse, who meets a deadly accident hopefully survives the accident but got a facial damage because of which she is not able to continue her job with children as they are scared of her.
well it is little different story as the girl is the one who has got scars not the boy.Story stars with Olivia describing her life and her neighbor Mason.
description

Mason is serial killer or we can say a short of grin reaper of the story who thinks he is responsible for the accident ,as olivia was trying to run away from him.

They both have demons they both luke in the dark in a way olivia because of her scars and mason because of his grin reaping job.

This is my first novella by Michelle and she doesn't disappoint. Have you got an hour or so spare?? As this is a perfect insta-love novella with a little sexy to hit just the right spot. Short enough to grab your interest, long enough for a little character development. It's not a dark romance as we typically expect from Michelle but there's dark aspects which I love.

Would I have liked more...always BUT that's just the same as with Michelle's full length books so it's definitely not a negative. Mason and Olivia grab your interest and make you want more!

Insta- loves are my guilty pleasure, try out Mercenary for size they could be yours too 😘

3 good story stars!!

Now, this was really hard for me to rate.. cause here are the things about this one..

1- It was a good great story, but for me, it didn't read smoothly in different parts (even though it's a short story).
2- It had a really good beautiful message to relay, though I felt like it could have used a bit more finesse.
3- I loved the main characters. Truly! I loved them both. Separately. In other words, I didn't feel their connection to each other, even though the Hero radiated with intensity.

So, there you go... 3 stars.

I just didn't get it, there were too many gaps, I enjoyed his darkness but I think it would've read better if it was more in depth, we got that with her character, but with him being on the cover I would've thought the story would'v been centred more so around him then her. Overall a good solid 4 star read for me.

Michelle Horst's books are like crack to me. I can't get enough. She won me over with Monster and I haven't looked back since. Her writing is fast-paced and engrossing and her novels are filled with Alpha hero hotness and sexy and sassy heroines who give as good as they get. Mercenary was no different. I absolutely loved Mason and Olivia, their chemistry and connection.

Mason Crowe and Olivia Nicols are neighbors and opposites at first glance. He is a mercenary who targets and kills the people who have hurt and harmed innocent victims. He is mysterious and has a darkness that surrounds him that makes Olivia nervous, whereas she is a happy pediatric nurse, and everything "sunny and light". Unfortunately after a tragic accident, Olivia loses her inner light and happiness she exuded and falls into a depression. But her newfound feelings of despair and need for vengeance call out to Mason. What follows is a remarkable story of a man who despite living his life in darkness and death, has a need to bring out the inner beauty in a woman who has lost her way.

While different from her previous books, the author perfectly highlights Mason's need to bring Olivia back into the world of the living. It is ironic that by helping her he realizes what he himself is missing and in need of - Love. I can't wait for more from this author in the future as she is an automatic buy for me! 4 stars! ~Ratula

Mercenary is a short standalone novella around Olivia, a paediatric nurse who works with terminally ill children. Her work life just highlights what an incredible person she really is. The mystery surrounded by her neighbour however, is where the story starts to spiral.

Excerpt:
There's something terrifying about him. Maybe it's the dead look in his eyes. I heard that a person who has nothing to live for has nothing to lose and that makes them dangerous.

Mason Crowe truly is an enigma but he turned me into a hot mess. The silent, mysterious, tall, dark and handsome man ends up being the man who stands by her when nobody else does, at the darkest time in her life...

Excerpt:
I was wrong when I thought that his eyes were empty...Mason Crowe lives in the shadows like I do now. That means, something hurt him. Mason is not the monster I once thought he was was. Just like me, he's wounded.

Mason is this tough guy persona but heck he's out for the greater good...keeping a promise to a little girl he wasn't able to save.

Mason excerpt:
I deal in death. Killer. Assassin. Mercenary. I go by many names. What I do is wrong in most people's eyes, but to the few I help, I'm hope. I kill the guilty. I kill the monsters that prey on the weak.

This story for me was just sheer brilliance and the chemistry between Olivia and Mason was electric. But the messages throughout about inner beauty, inner strength and courage also hit me emotionally and made this short story all the more stunning.

Another brilliant book by an author I love for very good reason. A five star must read!

Excerpt:
I might be scarred, only now starting to heal, and I might be a total mess, but I'm still a woman. Right now I'm a woman who is very conscious of the man next to her.

What happens when the one person you thought was a monster, turns out to be your saving grace? Michelle Horst delivers a fast paced, quick and sexy read that will have you wishing for more.

Olivia is living the dream. She has her own place, and a wonderful job of being a pediatric nurse to some special kids. Nothing makes her more happy than knowing that she can put a smile on her patients face in their time of need. Her next door neighbor on the other hand, NEVER has a smile on his face and that’s quite scary. But one night is going to change the lives of a woman who sees love in everything, and a man who gave up on it.

Mason Crowe is a mystery. He hunts the world for the bad guys and he makes it his mission to get rid of them. Does he care that it’s wrong? No. His job is to make sure that there is less evil out there and knowing that he can help with that, is all that matters to him. But when evil tragedy shows up in his personal life, Mason will go above and beyond to protect the woman who’s smile and joy made his darkness a little brighter.

This was a quick read and I liked the fact that the author didn’t waste any time with the characters progression towards each other. Mason wasn’t the big bad wolf that I was expecting and I liked that he had another side to him when it came to being with Olivia. My only issue with this one was that I wanted more of a background story on Mason and Olivia could’ve understood them more as characters but that’s just me. Aside from that, if you’re looking for a quick hot story, this one is for you.

I give Mercenary 5 stars. I was drawn to the characters and their ghosts. I felt heartbroken for Livvie when she lost the most important part of her life through no fault of her own. I also could relate to how Mason felt, having to watch others suffer and not be able to stop it. And the sex scenes, hot!

Michelle Horst is a very good author. Her writing grabs you and pulls you in. She describes the scenes very well, making you feel like you are right there, and her story was very interesting.

Mason and Livvie live on the same floor in their apartment building. He scares her. But when she is left looking like a monster after the drunk driver hit her, she is drawn to him. Their chemistry is off the charts. Can he help her with her monster?

Olivia "Livvie" Nicols, a pediatric nurse, has made the hospital her life, her home away from home. She loves taking care of the children and brightening their day, that is until after her accident, which left her with ugly scars on her face that scares the children. Left with no job and feeling depressed, she lays in bed all day. She is hell bent on revenge. What will it take to get her moving again?

Mason Crowe is quiet and keeps to himself and almost never leaves his apartment during the day. But nighttime is a different story. At night he fights the monsters that have harmed the innocent. He lives with darkness in his soul. Will he ever see the light again?

Mercenary is a stand alone novella that talks about abuse and hardship, monsters that harm others, but also about learning to move forward and adjust to what hand has been dealt to you.

I really enjoyed this novella.

I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book

This book was just Amazing. This book was a short novella, but it packed a punch.

Olivia was a nurse who worked with kids in the cancer ward. And she was the light of the whole ward, the kids loved her and she was just a breath of fresh air.
But Olivia's light was taken away when she was knocked over by a drunk driver. She lost her job and became a recluse.
But then her help and savior comes in the form of the most unlikely person. Her neighbor who she was always a bit scared of. And who kept his distance from everyone.

Mason feels a bit guilty about his neighbors accident. If it wasn't for him walking behind her and she being scared of him she might not have been in the accident. But now he noticed that she wasn't leaving her apartment and wasn't going to the hospital. So even though he doesn't want to get involved with anyone he checks on her and then he just gets sucked into her life.

This story is about two people who went through terrible things in their lives and found their way to each other and helping each other work through their issues.
This was a short story but definitely didn't lack for anything
