Entanglement

Rate this book
When Ellen Farrell was asked by her step-cousin Anthony to pretend they were betrothed so his father would increase his allowance, she agreed. She hoped to turn his affections away from the greedy misterss who was quickly putting him into debt.

But she hadn't counted on a much more dangerous threat to Anthony's money - and his life. His aunt Bess was spreading rumors all over London that Anthony's father, Lord Clavendon, had murdered his two brothers to obtain his title and money. And to make matters even more complicated, a Mr. Beresford seemed to be involved in a plot to eliminate Anthony.

Ellen was lovely and very bright. She knew that if she kept her head she would be able to solve the whole Entanglement.

Anthony Clavendon has a mistress, Fanny Bishop. He is in debt and his father, Lord Clavendon, won’t increase his quarterly allowance until he offers a respectable woman marriage. He is hoping when Anthony becomes betrothed, he will end this dalliance.

Miss Ellen Farrell is Lady Clavendon’s niece. Her mother sent her for a lengthy visit to her aunt’s home while she and her husband are on a voyage. Her mother hopes by the the time they return, Ellen will become betrothed. Preferably to Anthony, her step-cousin. Though the author never gives us a valid reason, Ellen decides to help Anthony with his mistress and they announce their (fake) engagement.

”Ellen, you’re a trooper! The man who does win you will be a lucky fellow!”

I enjoyed reading Catherine Fellows’ Vanessa and was hoping something of the same. But Entanglement was more of a Regency romp than a romance with a dash of suspense.

Ellen was mature beyond her years and commonsensical. She knew she was expected to make a good match but was in no rush for marriage. Her cousin, Jane, believed herself to be in love with the secretive Mr. Beresford. Lastly was the self-absorbed Anthony.

I liked the first three characters listed above and the suspense was satisfactory. But a lack of Anthony’s personal growth marred my enjoyment. What saved this ‘romance’ was Ms. Fellow’s writing skills and her use of language.

4.50 stars - pg13 (typical secular “clean” traditional regency w/possible mild profanity/expletives, drinking, ref to paramours – but this didn’t feel quite as tawdry as some other “clean” regencies)

I bumped this up to 5 stars simply because it was so engaging and fun. It was my first book by this author and I quite enjoyed her writing style. The heroine of this book is shades of Georgette Heyer’s Grand Sophy (which is one of my all-time favorites!). There is definitely romance in the story, but it’s kind of “back burner” to the sparkling adventure and bit of mystery.

While the plot is fairly mundane, the writing is good and Fellows avoids the little things that make so many historical novels seem jarring. This heroine has a little Sophy Stanton-Lacy in her which I like, although there is insufficient explanation of how a young woman who has lived a secluded life gained so much assurance prior to arriving in London.
