Miniwa, Wisconsin is under siege, but not by the usual summer tourists. The area's normally shy wolf population has begun stalking human prey, and their victims have been disappearing...or worse. Something is happening in the woods. Something brutal and primitive...

Officer Jessie McQuade has seen plenty in her years on the force—but nothing as intriguing as the gorgeous, naked man she encounters while tracking a rogue wolf. Professor Will Cadotte is a Native American activist. He's also the only man capable of distracting Jessie from her work. And for a cop, distraction—no matter how pleasurable—can be deadly. It's against Jessie's better judgment to accept Will's help in her investigation, yet she soon finds herself doing exactly that—and more. Will's dark, penetrating eyes see into a part of Jessie's soul she never knew existed. It's exhilarating...and terrifying.

Now, as a town's deepest secrets come to light, no one is safe: not friends, lovers, or strangers. And as Jessie follows a bloody trail to the shocking truth, she'll have to decide who she can trust when the moon is full...

While I was reading this book I couldn't decide if I liked it or not. Now that I'm done reading this book, I still can't figure it out. This book is a tangled up combination of fantasy and romance. It's also a tangle of original ideas and well-aged cliches. If you don't figure out who the real bad guy is before the heroine - you probably also get surprised by the endings of Dr. Seuss books. Incidentally, I never found the Cat in the Hat to be a subversive so much as I found him to be a huge jerk.

So somewhere between the werewolves (and again, I hope you get there before the heroine or...yikes) and the guy who enjoys running around naked, there's some good elements. The story moves at a good pace, the basic elements are pretty interesting . Werewolves are stalking a small town, and the only one who knows is cop named Jessie McQuade who doesn't believe in them. Also the werewolves were created by Nazis. That's right. The werewolves were created by Nazi scientists so that Hitler could have his own Nazi werewolf army. Not all of the people who made the change were appreciative.

When a hunter who seems to remember that story first hand shows up to help hunt down the wolves (which are supposedly carrying a dangerous new type of rabies virus), Jessie is forced to admit that something strange is going on, and the stranger is the only one she can trust.

Meanwhile, she has lots of sex with the in touch with the earth, not at all cliche, walking naked through the forest Native American professor who has information on the werewolves that makes Jessie suspicious he might have a little firsthand knowledge of his own. He's really pretty irrelevant to the story. The information he provides could have been provided several other ways and honestly? The sex was pointless. I know this was billed as a paranormal romance, so I guess the sex was inevitable, but it really wasn't necessary or helpful to the plot. Also not really instructive to the plot were the constant references to Jessie's chest, which was apparently large and inconvenient right up until her naked new friend taught her to appreciate them. Seriously, like, every chapter "blah blah werewolves blah blah my chest is too big blah blah".

The copy I had included a preview from the next book which...looked to be about on par with this one. In the end, however, Blue Moon kept me interested and entertained, so I'll probably keep an eye out for the sequels at the library. I'd love to see Handeland attempt a fantasy book that wasn't billed first and foremost as a romance. I enjoy well-written romance books, but in this case, the romance was the weak link and was a distraction to the readers and the characters.

On one hand, it's got evil Nazi werewolves running around in the woods of Wisconsin, looking to create a super-werewolf god. On the other hand, it's not a very good book at all. The romancy parts were intrusive, like they'd be figuring things out, or in peril, and then they'd stop everything to sex each other up. Like, they were just so HOT, not even evil Nazi werewolves can make them keep their hands off each other!

Meh, I say. Meh.

Reread on May-2016

I read this originally when I started reading PNR. In fact, this is the first series I read which I can qualify as adult PNR and I liked it extremely (despite of unimpressive front cover).

Recently I brought the entire series and I plan to finish it as soon as I can. I've already read 4 of them but since I'm reading it, I'm starting from start.

What I like?

Strong kick-ass heroine (not trash talk wise like in YA but actually qualified inspector)
Hot sexy love interest
Werewolves (finally a series which classifies them as villains instead of hot meat heroes)
Werewolves Hunters

Enough said! read it with open mind (because there is too much woo woo stuff is in here) and you might like it!

I found this book for a dollar at a used book store and decided that it looked like it was worth a try. I'm not usually into the Native American romance genre, but I do like a good paranormal romance so the werewolf angle of the Nightcreatures series had me at least mildly interested in the series.

The first one-third to one-half of the book was a little on the slow side. The narrator, Jessie McQuade is an easily relatable female police officer in a small town who has a lot of interaction with the colorful characters of said town. All of the characters are pretty well rounded, which makes up for the lack of action.

When the action picks up, boy does it. You find yourself questioning the intentions of virtually every character Jessie comes in contact with, including the man she's taken into her bed. The author does a great job of changing your mind every other page about who is a bad guy and who is a good guy. And at least for me, the ending came as a pleasant surprise.

The mythology of the book is interesting, taking the werewolf angle in a new and welcome direction. It isn't the best book that I've ever read, but I enjoyed it enough to start looking for the other books in the series.

I've read this before so if I can't remember whodunnit and still enjoy the *ahem* 'romance' then surely it's a 4 star right?

This is a few years old now and felt a wee bit racist in parts, but I'm putting that down to poor race-education rather than a sense of superiority on the author's part. There was plenty of sexy time, a little mystery and lots of good one-liners with a female lead I genuinely liked. I'll be back for more Handeland.

Special thanks to the crew at Castle Dracula for creating the 2021 Lunar challenge - this is gonna be fun!

Okay, let's talk about this piece of work real fast. I took a ridiculously long amount of time to read this since I was too stubborn to drop it, but I both didn't want to read it and kept having things interrupt my usual reading time. It has major problems with its narrator, who feels compelled to give her quip on her situation every other line. Not only that, she is completely embarrassing and and unbelievable. I'm supposed to accept a trained cop turns into a giddy schoolgirl every time she sees a hot guy? Ew. And the near-sex on assignment, in a school no less. I get it's a romance novel but ew. I hated her. I really only liked the werewolf hunter; he was an interesting character, especially with his German background.

I think what bothered me most about this book was that the story wasn't actually bad. It was fairly interesting (Nazi werewolves and whatnot) and the mystery was fun too. But it just kept getting completely side-lined by this atrocious narrator and her sex obsession (which she repeatedly realizes is dangerous to both her and her job and she KEEPS DOING IT. I hate this type of character. The willfully ignorant.) I would give it a two, but I don't want to encourage ANYONE to put up with this narrator. I can't believe there is a whole series about her. Then again, Bella has a whole series so I guess it's whatever people enjoy reading.

I need to figure out if I want to read The Passion or The Kingdom of Gods.

Another urban fantasy wherein a tough, no nonsense cop falls into the paranormal universe that exists all around her. From this book I learned a few things:

1) Native American professors are hunk who like heavyset cops with appearance issues and like to walk around barefoot, pantless and sans underwear.
2) Werewolves exist, but some are created via some really stupid plot devices, and guess what, our government KNOWS this, and has a special force of supersoldiers hunting them and other paranormal bad guys down.
3) Normal people who have no magic in them are nasty pieces of work who never understand magic people.

oh... and 4) Trust no one; the person you think you can trust the most will turn about and bite you in the butt, unless it is the hunky native american professor you have met TWICE, and had loads of hot sex with...

I'm enjoying this series as popcorn... but lords...

He's a rebellious Ojibwe professor with a penchant for activism and a bad reputation. She is a small-town cop with a troubled past. Together... they fight crime werewolves!

The plot -- Jessie (female MC and narrator) discovering that the rash of odd deaths and disappearances isn't rabies or dumb tourists, but werewolves, lead by someone planning on becoming the Wolf God through Ancient Indian Ritual -- is decent. What I couldn't stomach is how Jessie and Will (male MC and Obligatory Love Interest) interacted. Really, the two of them could be quite interesting, if the plot didn't tend to take a derailing into 'Jessie thinks Will is hot and sexy, which leads to sex'. I mean, I thought Jessie was interesting and Will could be interesting, and the two of them might have had an interesting interaction, except most of the stuff they did when sharing a scene together is basically hump like bunnies.

There was also attempt to make it seem like Will was the antagonist, which didn't work for me, just because the book couldn't make me forget that it was a romance -- in other words, the odds of Designated Love Interest being the villain is about the odds that both main characters take vows of celibacy.

The thing is, that the non-romance plot was decent, and if I could just maybe get some vibe for how Jessie and Will interact besides 'sexsexsexsex', I might have enjoyed the romance. I mean, I don't care how hot a fictional character (especially one in a book) is -- if I wanted to read hot fictional sex, I could take my chances on the internet. Make me care about the characters, and their relationship, and I'll care a lot more about the sex.

The short story I picked this up on was about Jessie and Will's wedding, in which it's revealed that Will's meddling grandma (who has been dead for ten years, but this is a paranormal romance) planted a love charm on both of them. Which might explain the hormonal overdrive, but might just be a retcon.

There are also more in the series, but it appears to follow the romance series pattern of 'couple tangential to the previous couple meet and fall in love/have hot sex/both'. Which is a shame, as one of my favorite things are seeing how established couples balance work and romance, plus learning more about the actual plot. I'd rather read more about Jessie than get attached to a new character -- who looks to have a Tragic Past involving her husband and kid getting killed by werewolves. Yeah... giving this a pass.

I love paranormal. I love legends and mythology. I'll admit WI has its fair share of weird & creepy. So when fellow WI author Lori Handeland put it all together in one gorgeous blue package, I didn't even need a shiny bow...

Heroine Jessie McQuade is NOT a girlie-girl. She is a hard-headed cop who is totally a see-it-to-believe-it, who specializes in sarcasm. When she gets a call to a ordinary-seeming car-hits-wolf-on-highway call, she has NO idea what she's in for. A shocky driver who thought the wolf was dead, went to check it out - and got bit. A wolf who SHOULD have been dead ran off into the woods. She tracks it - and finds a naked guy instead.

Soon she's up to her eyeballs in psycho werewolves, disappearing bodies, gun-toting "good ol' boy" vigilantes, and a really weird German werewolf-hunter. Everyone's after a wolf totem she found and will stop at nothing to get it - and use it to raise the "wolf god" and take over the world.

The one guy who might help her is Native American activist Will Cadotte. He knows more than he's letting on, and she's not sure she can trust him. He's a distraction she can't afford. But she can't seem to resist him...

This was an awesome blend of Native American myth & legend, a twist on history and not your typical werewolf tale. Lori Handeland really nailed that hardheaded northwoods mentality where the DNR works for Satan BUT the greatest punishment on earth is the loss of your hunting/fishing license... I also loved a pragmatic, sometimes-bitchy heroine who is forced to reevaluate her whole belief system. Definitely worth reading!

#1 Nightcreature ("Moon") series - Werewolves

Back Cover:

"The small town of Miniwa, Wisconsin is under siege, but not by the usual summer tourists. The area's normally shy wolf population has begun stalking human prey, and their victims have been disappearing ... or worse. Something is happening in the woods. Something no one can explain ..."

Officer Jessie McQuade encounters a hunky naked man while tracking a rogue wolf. Professor Will Cadotte is a Native American activist, and the only man capable of distracting Jessie from her work. Jessie enlists Will's help in the investigation of the murderous wolves.

These are not happy, friendly, sexy werewolves you want to snuggle up with. I liked this story alot, a quick read. Will definitely be continuing with the Nightcreature series.

Blue Moon by Lori Handeland
Jessie & Will
FORGET WHAT YOU THINK YOU KNOW

I'm completely serious when I tell you to forget everything you know about a paranormal werewolf book. I went into this one thinking that it would be basically like every other paranormal werewolf book I've ever read. I expected a werewolf clan or pack with a fearless uber hot leader who was intrigued and couldn't stay away from a sexy human woman. Not happening here, not even close. This book is so much more! It's got suspense, dreadfulness, brilliant sex appeal, and above all wit.

Jessie McQuade is a fearless public servant. She can hunt down the bad guy, kill and skin a buck, and look sexy in a pair of grandma briefs and a t-shirt. Jessie is trying to figure out what is going on with the wolf population in northern Wisconsin. she has a full plate and to add insult to injury her captain constantly nags her about her whereabouts. Sheesh, give a girl a break would ya! She's a true hero and won my heart over tenfold.

Will is just plain old yummie! He's a hotter than hell Native American belonging to a local tribe. Oh and did I mention he's also a smokin' hot professor over at the college. Phew! His intentions with Jessie aren't quite clear at first, but, well, you'll get the picture when you pick this outstanding tale up. I'm fairly certain he melted my panties off me a few times!

The supporting character cast in this book is vast. There are so many people and places to bear in mind. Some are good, some are bad and at times you don't know which category someone may fall into. Clyde, Cherry, Zelda, and especially Edward made this book everything I needed it to be and more. Be careful who you trust because more than likely in the end they're going to eat you... or worse turn you! Bwahahaha!

To sum this up, this book was so compelling that I could not put it down. I was so powerfully drawn to the characters, that what happened to them became my primary concern. The dialogue flowed with ease and felt very natural, or as natural as it can in a paranormal book, lol! It was effortless to read, the pacing was just right, and the tension Lori created throughout was superb and lead to an excellent climax. I read the paperback which was 352 pages long. Just what the doctor ordered for this reader. I'm looking forward to the next installment of this awesome series, Hunter's Moon.

On a side note... I had the privilege of sitting at Lori's table at the Barbara Vey Reader Appreciation Luncheon this year in Milwaukee.. Can I just say that this woman is one of the nicest authors I've ever met! So down to earth, so laid back, and she's a Cheesehead for Godsakes... Thanks for all the gifts Lori!! YOU ROCK!!!

2.5 stars. This book was rather predictable, and sadly, for the first half of the book, I wanted to grab the two main characters and bash their heads together until they started making good choices, and seeing what was bleeding obvious. The romance was rather thin, and not at all explained, and I had figured out every plot twist before it happened, save for the final one -- which didn't even up being a surprise. It seemed to jump the shark when they started mentioning a certain feared organisation, which just made me sigh.

One of the best things about this book (series) is the paranormal mystery. I remembered some of the plot but couldn't recall if a certain character was good or bad, so I was drawn in again to find out. There are several possible villains. It's not a hard mystery to solve, but it was fun and kept my interest. The romance is just a subplot—instant attraction with no depth, equating sex with love. The story is told from the heroine's POV only. The hunky hero is basically her sexy sidekick, who we learn little about. Overall, it's an action-filled, easy read that's pure entertainment.

Strange things are going on in Miniwa, Wisconsin.
(There's a Manawa, WI―close enough.)

Plot in a Nutshell: A sarcastic cop teams up with a Native American professor to stop someone trying to create a werewolf army and take over the world, on the night of a Blue Moon. (The second full moon in the same month.) Several PG-13 sex scenes ensue. Insta-love happens for two lonely outcasts.

(No Spoilers)

Jessie (26) is a loner who loves her job.
🇸‌🇭‌🇪‌:
🚔 has no family but her estranged girly mother.
🚔 is lonely, having never been loved.
🚔 is tall, has short hair and is full-figured.
🚔 is a tomboy who enjoys guns, hunting and swimming.
🚔 is insecure about herself—believing she's only okay-looking and socially inept.
🚔 hates woo-woo, only wanting facts.

Jessie first meets Will Cadotte (age?) when she chases a wolf through the woods at night and finds him outside his cabin, naked. His muscular, buff body captivates her, and she can't look away.
🇭‌🇪‌:
🪶 belongs to the Grand Portage Wolf clan in MN.
🪶 is in WI to teach a college class.
🪶 is an expert in Native American totems.
🪶 learned Tai Chi to help him with his balance.
🪶 likes to walk around naked.
🪶 is insecure about himself―women want him for his looks but don't want to be seen with an Indian. He thinks Jessie is one of them, but she's only worried about the reaction she'll get for being with a hot guy.

☹️ Jessie says "Faith is for fools."
❤️ Will's response: "I'd rather be a fool than believe in nothing."

What starts everything: On the night of the first full moon, Jessie responds to an accident where Karen Larson hit a wolf, was bitten, and the wolf fled. She follows the blood trail into the woods, meeting Will. Later, she finds a black wolf totem at the scene.

Visiting the college to learn more, she finds Will there and gives him the totem to research. Their chemistry is immediate.

Karen, a teacher, becomes animalistic at her school, killing the principal and nearly a student. Jessie seeing her crazy behavior, senses something is terribly wrong. After the sheriff kills Karen, her body—and the principal's—mysteriously vanish from the morgue.

Edward Mandenauer arrives claiming to be from the DNR to kill the wolf, citing a new rabies strain. In truth, he's a Jäger-Sucher (hunter-searcher), and the leader of a secret special forces group who hunt the monsters created by Josef Mengele during Hitler's era.

︻┳═一 He tells Jessie about the werewolves, and they hunt them together.

👹 It's a nice change of pace to have the werewolves be evil, infected with a virus that turns them into demon-possessed monsters who feed on human flesh. Since there's no cure, they must be killed with silver.

Someone wants to be a wolf god: “There’s an old and obscure legend of the Ojibwe. The wolf god can be brought to life during a blue moon if the way is paved by an army of wolf men. And women.”

🐺 The wolf totem is needed for the ritual.

Possible Suspects:
▪️Will, the love interest. There are plenty of good reasons to suspect him.
▪️Sheriff Clyde Johnston, Jessie's boss who likes Clint Eastwood.
▪️Zee, a senior dispatcher, is a foul-mouthed, cigarette-smoking, hard-drinking close friend of Jessie.
▪️Cherry, the medical examiner's secretary, who doesn't like Jessie and vice-versa.

The exciting conclusion, with some surprises, wraps up a bit too quickly and easily. After the villain and their wolf army are defeated, Jessie joins the monster-hunting group—

The series has a continuing story arc with different MCs in each book. More details about werewolves and the monster hunters are revealed as it progresses.

ERROR: The Miniwa PD consisted of myself, the sheriff, and six other officers...

🚨 A police department is run by the "Chief of Police," not a sheriff.

I am not a person who enjoys books written in the first person. As a general rule, I pretty much dump them before they are even on my shelf for any lenght of time. There are, however, a few notable exceptions to my rule. Lori Handeland is one. I find her Night Creatures stories fascinating and well worth the gritting on my teeth at the 1st person. The writing intrigued me, and the story is fast paced and wide enough for me to lose myself in the tale and partially forget the tense in which it is written. I have since read all the first books several times, and still the stories remain fresh.

For those who enjoy the paranormal world of werewolves, the Night Creature novels are good reading.

I had to put this down. The female main is completely unlikable. She is basically a grown Bella Swan - oh poor me, oh I am not pretty, oh I don't know what to do with boys, blah blah blah. Naturally the male main is handsome, self-assured and gorgeous, following the paranormal rule that true happiness and romance only happens if the female is less than the man in every way.

3.5✨

Why is there a half naked man on the cover of this book when it’s barely smutty? That’s super deceiving and most likely the result of the low ratings on here. Tricking the smut readers.

Anyway, it was a very interesting story. Very different from any other shifter book I’ve ever read. I’m basically on the fence about it. Like I definitely won’t read the second in the series, but the first one was still a decent read. I was definitely surprised by the ending.

But I just want to mention… why did everyone call Jessie ugly all the time 😂😂😂😂😂😂

I liked the idea and the heroine and most of the plot development.
But I can't help thinking and wishing the werewolves weren't all bad guys, so that the story could have gone in a different direction.

Okay I can't remember most of the book but I've given this book 1 star because up to about 80% of the book I read it thinking Will was a shifter. So I'm pretty sure it turns out that he isn't one. There is a wolf on the cover, it's called 'blue moon' and at times it looked like he could be a shifter so I wasn't making things up.

I ended up not caring about the romance side of it because I was pretty tired of the two characters. I did however like the suspense and trying to figure out who's bad. I have to say I didn't expect it to be the person it turns out to be. The end got a little bit crazy. The hunters were quite interesting. And I'm pretty sure it's this book where she has a weird dream about the wolf doing stuff to her and then it turns out that the frickin wolf she dreamt about was bad and wasn't even Will so wtf was she having that creepy dream for? Though this could be another book entirely. I read two similar books around the same time and I didn't enjoy them both so now in my mind I have a weird jumbled up version.

So overall others may like it but it wasn't really for me.

I enjoyed this and read it almost straight through. (I stopped to sleep for a few hours then went right back to it!) I was pretty unsure of what was going on for most of the book, so I think that's a point in the author's favor. The cover artist clearly never actually read the book since the main male character has Short hair, not the long flowing locks of an Indian brave. (Grrrr, stuff like that bothers me!) I really liked the sarcastic and aggressive female main character who knew her way around firearms, hunting, and breaking up bar fights. Awesome!
Have to say though, I was very disappointed that the werewolves were the bad guys. I was all ready to suspend my disbelief that Will could still be some other kind of coyote skin-walker or Something, Anything else just to explain his strange strength and agility... Maybe it just isn't given away in this book? Oh, I hope so!

Werewolves, Native American Lore, an interesting setting ... I was surprised that I liked this book as much as I did. Jessie McQuade, the deputy sheriff of a small northwoods town where the big excitement is hauling drunk tourists off to jail to recover from benders, suddenly finds herself in the midst of what is first a murder investigation, and then something entirely different. Uncertain what to believe, (I mean, werewolves, really?) and strongly attracted to Will Cadotte, a Native American of the Wolf clan, a professor, and now, murder suspect, Jessie isn't quite sure who she can trust. Or what she can trust: her head or her heart.

This is the first book in a series, and I would read more of this author, but not as a priority. Save it for the beach!

Although the plot was pretty nice, I simply hated Jessie.

She is everything I abhor in female-lead characthers: measures women's intelligence based on their appearences, thinks that everything related to women is stupid and doesn't have a single female friend (Zee doesn't count, she was just an old-lady working in the police department and there's that ).

Will was a nice addition, but the author created such absurd features about him (Tai Chi naked in the middle of the florest? Super strenght and speed? My ass) and made him unreal. I couldn't really like Will.

The only characther I loved was the old German guy. And he was the key to the story development.

I have so many mixed feelings about Blue Moon...

I didn't get very far at all to be honest. Normally I give books a little more of a chance, especially with romance novels since they're relatively easy and quick to read. But I just couldn't get into this one and decided it wasn't worth forcing my way through.

It was published like fifteen years ago now, but I'm still put off by the casual gay slurs and constant reference to Native Americans as Indians. Cops aren't really my thing either, so I couldn't get too invested in Jessie as a character.

This was an interesting read for me. The paranormal thriller part was great, but the romance seemed forced and out of place. I found myself saying, "oh just skip this part, and get back to the story!" I wonder if the author enjoyed writing the romance aspect at all... It still was an entertaining read overall.

Not a fan of this book. I have to admit after reading many books in this genera I was not a big fan of werewolves being the bad guys. This is really just a vampire slayer book about werewolves. I'm going to skip the rest of this series.
