Dark Romance Novel, sensitive topics—highlighted with religious elements (hope in the face of hell).

Finding herself stranded in a new city, eighteen-year-old Ember Bloom thought she’d reached her all time low. She was wrong. A mindless walk to a dead-end job landed her in the path of her gambling fathers’ enemies. Her only defense was a stranger, Slayton Winslow, a known enforcer and fighter—rumored to be Odin’s prince, underground royalty. On sight, Slayton stole her breath and rushed her heart. Slayton’s enigmatic attraction to her, how stoically he shielded her only churned Ember’s attraction to the bad boy who had given her safe haven in a real life hell. The draw to him, how he could reach her without saying a word, gave her a reason to fight, to awaken. She knew every second could be their last in the city seeded with treacherous deceit and life threatening power plays.

This book gets 5 stars for the simple fact that it kept me on my toes, kept me guessing, right until the end. I never knew which side was up. Every time I thought "Phew, that was close" or "Okay, road to HEA", some other messed up stuff happened and I was blindsided. By the time I finished this book, I realized that everything I thought I knew, I didn't.

This was the first book I ever read from Jamie Magee and it definitely won't be the last. Keep these coming girl! She's found a new fan in me!

This author wove a tale full of darkness and depravity. A story that shone a light on the deviant, the corrupt, and the immoral. You would think all of the evil and wickedness portrayals would be depressing. Because these sins occur in our world EVERY DAY! But no, the author injected just the right amount of doctrinal information and gave her characters enough faith, that you couldn't help but be hopeful for them, despite the horrors and atrocities they faced.

This story was about Ember and Slayton, who were once strangers and became each others saving grace. Their road wasn't easy and their path wasn't without much sacrifice. But their love truly seemed to overcome all obstacles. Somehow. I believe their ending was perfect... for them. Their HEA wasn't paved with rainbows and unicorns. Their pain and suffering didn't just disappear in the face of a happy ending. They had to deal, mourn, adapt, and embrace the new life and new chance that they were graciously given. It was raw and it was honest and I absolutely loved it!

Mention the words DARK ROMANCE and I couldn't help myself!! Sometimes I just have to step out of the light and walk towards darkness!!

DISENGAGED: Told in 'Dual Perspectives' This is my first book by this author.

Things progress really quickly in this book, quicker than what I'm used to..And I'm still trying to wrap my head around how it all transpired.

Living with her only living relative, her father, he's always made it abundantly clear never to leave the apartment without him by her side as protection, she only ever walks to and from work.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic Do you have any idea what could happen to you out there?
You think there's not a punk that doesn't have a score to
settle with me and wouldn't think twice about using
you to do so?

A mindless walk to a dead-end job landed her in the path of her gambling father's enemies. Her only defense was a stranger, Slayton Winslow

Like a wrecking ball Slayton Winslow collided into Ember Bloom's life, one heated look from a doorway, one weak kneed kiss later, a demand to get on his bike and there you have it..

Slayton stole her breath and rushed her heart.

Is he friend or foe?
Has she been kidnapped?

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Image and video hosting by TinyPic Slayton was instant. I swear I felt that boy jar my soul the first time I looked him in the eye. I felt his stoic strength. I felt his stubborn determination. I sensed his uncanny loyalty. Above all, I felt how drawn he was to me, how our pull was mutual. Almost supernatural.

Think the actor 'Sylvester Stallone' when it comes to the dialogue between these two characters, Slayton is a man of few words. It's not until you reach 'Slayton Winslow's' POV that it kicks up a notch.

All things gritty come at you full force as you hit that half way mark.

The only gripe I have with this book, is the fast pace the author has set, everything happens too fast, insta everything, it all happens within the first chapter, but getting past all that the story line does pack enough of a punch for you to keep going. Once you hit that stage you'll be racing through the pages to read the outcome.

“The devil is as mouthwatering as sin, drenched in charm and unthinkable charisma.”

This is by no means what I would term dark only because I've probably gone as dark as I could go with certain books. It is gritty enough to satisfy ones stepping into the land of darkness though.

Even though this is my first read by this author it definitely won't be the last..

Now LIVE!

This is not a book me or anyone can call beautiful. This book promised me a Dark romance, with very sensitive topics, and dare I say it completely delivers it. This was a first book I read by this author, and I am very very excited to read more, especially if her stories are like this.

This book follows the story of a 19 year old girl Ember, who was targeted by the underworld mobs because her father owned them a lot of money. That is when she literally runs into Slayton..

and cue instant love

He was a bad-boy biker, and an ex-underground fighter, who was sent to collect the debt her father owned the mob; but instead of taking her hostage for threatening her father, he takes her to protect her.

What I really liked about this book was that they really did not have the whole "love cures everything" plotline, because that is irritating as fuck. And I really just could forgive the love at first sight thing.

But trying to protect her comes with consequences, both of them have to pay for.

Slayton gets pulled into the underground fighing ring, and becomes a gladiator; whereas Ember becomes a sex slave.

"Odin's princes never fall."

What they went through, the way the author described everything made me feel like I was there, right beside Em and Slay experiencing everything. I really am not all that very much an HEA enthusiast. I take the stories as they come, and don't mind sad endings because real life's shit, and happy endings are fairy tales, and I am not very fond of those. So I was so surprised when this book had me begging to the literary gods to give Slay and Em a happy happy ending. Because fuck if they didn't deserve it.

The one thing that stopped me from giving it a complete 5 star review was the way they spoke. This book was majorly written in Em's POV, with about 2 chapters of Slay's, so there was a lot of monologue.

A lot.

Sometimes, the monologue failed to reach me, failed to express the emotions the character was feeling. It was a problem that persisted with the conversations too. They felt awkward and a bit stilted, which confused the fuck out of me.

But other than that, this book was a detailed horrors of a life in underworld, and the author absolutely excelled at getting her words through. I definitely recommend it to anyone who has a taste for reading something raw and dark.

This is the story of Ember and Slayton, two people having a click!

The book started and after 35 pages I was speechless with everything that was happening. The book was dark, raw and intense. There were almost no dialogues among the heroes and since the book was written from Ember’s POV (with a couple chapters from Slayton’s POV), I was left reading lots of thoughts, her thoughts. And it was amazing because I honestly couldn’t put this book down. Ms. Magee wrote a story that totally engaged my attention but it felt like Disengaged couldn’t be more appropriate title for it. The plot was great and the twists, surprises and mystery were well-thought. Ms. Magee also succeeded to give me so strong feelings with her story.

Ember is a young girl that finds herself in a terrible situation because of other people’s choices. She has an innocence but she is not stupid! She is stubborn and faithful and it’s impossible not to love her! Although she goes through hell, she is still the light in this book.

Slayton is a bit of a dark hero. He has his demons that he fights. For the most part of this book I couldn’t understand why he was doing whatever he was doing but he made me trust him like Ember did. He is also protective in his way. Where Ember is the light, Slayton is the darkness and together they are perfect!

Their interactions were raw! There were so many emotions but so few words that everything felt even more intense!

The end of the book took me by surprise. I didn’t see it coming and I was happy with it! I really liked that Ms. Magee didn’t sort out everything within a week but she gave time to her heroes to grow!

I definitely recommend this book to everyone who loves a raw, dark romance!

Ember Bloom & Slayton Winslow
The girl living from scratches of her personal hell, and a guy, an enforcer and a cage fighter, living on automatism merely to exist until he sees her-the girl with a halo around her, the girl he would make it happen for, the girl he would save...eventually

Uf, I can't even begin to explain my own inner conflict... I liked the story, I loved the main character but I fuckin hated the heroine...

That was one of the worst, annoying and stupid heroines I have ever read about and honestly I have neither compassion, tolerance nor simpathy and the least of all, patience to stand for that kind of crap!

So, she's the only reason why this book will be rated with 2.5 stars...

Sadly not even the guy or the plot could have saved the day...unfortunately😒

"The truth is, there are no happy endings, only happy moments."

This is my first book by this author. The author had been recommended to me, so I took a chance.... and I'm so happy that I did.

I don't even know where to start with this. The blurb gives nothing away as to just how crazy this plot it. It has so many layers as the story unfolds. You think it's something, but it really is just so much more.

Jamie Magee's writing style... I can't say enough good things about it. She doesn't rush anything. Everything unfolds at a pace that allows you to enjoy the journey but adequately absorb everything she throws at you. Everything is written with purpose. Just when you think that she can't possibly shock you, another piece to the puzzle is revealed.

Ember and Slayton are forced together, or so it seems. They're attracted to each other in a way that nothing can come between them. They both make mistakes along the way as they struggle with secrets and their past. The ending. It's shocking. The depths that they are each willing to take for each other... it's amazing.

I won't give anymore away, because it's best read not knowing all the details.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher via Netgalley.

This Is the first book I have read by Jamie Magee and I am glad I did. Disengaged kept me on the edge of my seat. There was no predictability. The way Slayton and Ember were thrown together was intense. There was no lead up to it and then bam there he was and she went along with it! The first half there were so many questions and I was like "how does this happen". Magee didn't rush anything but kept you wondering the entire time. I was intrigued by the relationship and then finally we got some of Slaytons POV and it was like puzzle pieces falling into place. Magees writing style was impressive and she kept my attention the entire book. I must say I was blown away by the ending. I never ever expected the story to change so much at the end. I loved it! I won't give away any spoilers but it was awesome! I am gonna recommend this book to a couple of my book loving friends as I think they will enjoy it's much as I did. Way to go Jamie Magee. Impressive!

Slayton Winslow aka "Slayer" comes into Ember Bloom's life like a wrecking ball. Literally no introductions. Just a hot kiss and a demand to get on his bike.
I had no clue what his intentions might be with her.
Was there love/lust?
Was he protecting her?
Was she payment or insurance for money owed?

As the story progressed, I felt like it was a combination of all of the above.

What I do know is that Ember initially came off as a weak heroine. She rarely challenges anything, and when she does, it's a half ass attempt. Basically, her father is a mess and has taken so many risks with so many bad people, that he puts his daughter in direct danger. Slayton is there to hurt and help him. Why, is something I kept thinking, throughout.

Then everything changed around 45%. The most important change was getting inside Slayton's head with his POV. It answered so many questions for me. The second change was everything that happened after the church incident. There were so many layers to the story that had yet to be exposed until this point. And just when I thought the story wasn't dark enough, the author took us into a seedier world. This is when I first saw Ember's strength.

While some parts were hard to read, I liked the second half of the story so much more than the first. As I mentioned, lots of questions were answered and a whole bunch of new questions needed to be asked. But the story ramped up in intensity. The author also threw in a number of interesting twists, the biggest being, who is Slayton? All I can say is that he is more than an enforcer and fighter.

If you are looking for a dark and complex story, this one might be right for you.

Dark, brutal and edgy yet completely beautiful at times...a must read!

I love the dark side, there is something about the depravity that draws me in but what I love even more is when there is something that makes a story stand out and makes you take notice. There was something about this story that did just that. The characters were unique in their own ways. Slayton; silent but deadly, calm yet completely unhinged and raw yet vulnerable. Ember; quiet and observant, a girl with a deep sense of love and forgiveness for those who may not deserve it, and fearless. She looked evil and in face and then would walk right through it.

"Everyone wants a bad boy until they realize they aren't really bad - some unattainable alpha - but just a boy with layers of hell that have to be dealt with."

This book while dealing with the underbelly of society and all of the brutalness that entails also has this edge of hope that makes the story memorizing. Even in the worst of moments there is this faithful hope that things may turn out alright. I liked that this story was not wrapped up in a pretty bow, it showed that life is a fight and battle and even in fiction struggles happen. This story had the unexpected and air of mystery to it. Slayton was broken and dark;

"It was almost like a crush, but more so because a crush was an idea, this boy was a brutal reality."

a soldier to toy with, a fighter with a black soul. You can't help but feel deeply for him even when his actions are less than admirable.

Ember while dealt a crappy hand does her best with what she has;

"It made my chest ache and everything inside of me begged to get as close to her as I could, I wanted to be consumed by the purity I felt between us, this undefined rush that gave reason to the insanity of my life."

her light is bright and faith is unwavering. While characters like her tend by naive, she is anything but, while sometimes her actions are questionable she doesn't go in with blinders or rose colored glasses.

I enjoyed every step of this journey and I know a story has me when I cringe and turn away from the words only to turn right back around and get sucked back in. I enjoyed this author's storytelling ability and while is my first from her it won't be my last.

Grandmother was the only parent Ember had ever had Ember’s mother had overdosed a few months after having Ember. Her mother had been sixteen and Ember’s father had been a marine and had run. Then after time went on every now and again Ember’s father showed up and Ember would see him in the distance watching her play. When Ember was seventeen her grandmother passed away and Ember never felt more alone in her life. Ember headed up to be with her father leaving behind her boyfriend. Then three months before graduation Ember had no chance to make friends and her dad was a stranger who was her father. Her father worked in a club at night and slept days Ember and her father had a sort of bond that had formed. Ember was pretty sure her father was amazed that she turned out normal nothing like her mother or father. Her father gave her precautions as he had enemies that would use her to get to him and Ember listened pretty much. Then Ember started working at Mrs. Lin’s family’s dry cleaning business. Ember slowly started to hate her life but she was too tired too care. Ember had seen Slayton just before dawn leaving a female’s place. Slayton was beautiful and Ember reacted to him like no other male before him. Slayton was broken under the surface that was screaming Embers name and Slayton woke Ember from the fog of her life. Ember didn’t welcome drama but felt whatever Slayton brought with him would be worth it. Slayton told Ember to kiss him and get on his bike. Ember was still a virgin. Then four men came into the unit Slayton and Ember were in. Slayton told the men that Ember was his girlfriend and Ember’s gut told her Slayton had saved her as her father’s last name was brought up as well as the daughter. Slayton claimed it wasn’t Ember. Ember asked Slayton if her father was dead and he said “ not yet”. Ember knew her father was a gambler and he battled addictions as well as PTSD. The next morning as Slayton got ready with his knives and guns. Ember knew Slayton could be deadly yet ember knew he had protected her the day before.
This was a hard book to read but never boring. Completely engrossed with this story. The plot was very good. There was surprises and twists throughout the story. There are many layers to this story. I liked that I couldn’t figure this story out unlike others I have read. This was definitely a dark story. For Ember and Slayton to stay together is definitely star crossed considering who they are but it works in this story. I didn’t really like how trusting I liked the characters and how they interacted and I like the twists in this story and I recommend.

5 unprepared dark and perfect stars!! Prepare yourself this book will eat you up and spit you out. I couldn't sleep I had to read. The first half of the book I thought "what a tease", it was sweet and all but the 2nd half blew me out of the water. In the end two broken souls find each other and repair the only way they know how...
Ember Bloom grew up with nothing and ended up with a paranoid, gambling, alcoholic, hustling and pretty much worthless father (who I kept wishing would just get his shit together). Said father brought the bad guys around but Ember knew the rules, without knowing the danger. And well Slayton was danger. But the best kind of danger she would ever meet. Ok so it was instant love but he protected her when he didn't have to. How long can this criminal keep her safe from the guys he answers to?!?! And can she trust him?!?!
Slayton just wants out. He is over this criminal life. He fought (literally) to just remain above water. And then one job lead him straight to an angel herself. But will she trust such a dark soul? He will fight and protect her until his last breath. But will that be enough?!?!
Swoon..."Odin's princes never fall".
I love SLAYTON!! I wish Ember could have cut the cancer aka her dad out of her life. I mean the shit he caused destroyed a part of her soul. Uggh!!! And I want to add tho I despise Channing for some very poor choices by the end I think I may have a little swoon spot left for that dirty boy.
This book started off a little predictable but that was just to lead you to so much more. This book kept taking me here and then there and then here until I was shaking with anticipation. I had no clue where this was going. And it took me down a very dark path. Oh how I loved it!!
This author pulled me into this life and clearly outlined the stakes for this game. Except the terms of this game changed and things got crazy. This is a very recommended read.
Do not expect rainbows and puppies. You will get dark souls and dirty minds, and you may not have knew it but you will like every minute of it.

Actual Rating 3.5 stars!

Ember Bloom finds herself between a rock and a very corporeal 'hard place' in Jamie Magee's Disengaged. That rock being her degenerate father's astronomical gambling debts and 'drug world' ties.
The hard place...
Slayton Winslow...a person and story element that we will get back to later.

But for now we must discuss Ember and the insta-plot surrounding her.
This book goes from zero to everything within the first ten pages. There is no build, there is a scant allusion to the quasi-rebellious nature that our very naive, but not quite virginal ingenue believes leads her into the forest full of bigs and bads that she just happens to stumble upon.
With the biggest and baddest of said 'baddies' coming out of his skin to be her 'knight in shining armor'.
Even going so far as to risk life and limb in cage matches to prove his loyalty to her, and use his own money to help back her father's debts to both loan sharks and drug dealers.

Did I mention that this all occurs before they ever manage to have sex?

Whatever it is about Ember that calls to Slayton must have his name, address, telephone number, and bank accounts. Because one kiss from her has him going from 'don't know, don't show' to 'climb every mountain' mode in 3.2 seconds.
A factor that proves a little hard to swallow; even in the face of this dark and dangerous world.

A world that, while filled with every manner of vice, sin, and illegality that one could possibly fathom. DOES NOT qualify this read as a dark romance.
Why?
Because while bad things happen around our little ingenue. Nothing really bad ever manages to happen directly to her. She is always kept either just out of harms way, or a victim of an impossibly mild degree of the horror being suffered by those around her.
Coupled with the 'clean hands' ending plot twist; that makes for the biggest WTF moment ever.

That is not to say that this book is not well written, emotionally gripping, or worth the read.
It most certainly is all of those things.
But it is also a story that should have been allowed to unfold a bit more slowly, and to tell its very dramatic and tell-worthy tale at a more natural and realistic pace.

Disengaged is a dark romance that I did not see coming. The synopsis did not prepare me in any way for this book! I honestly thought I was going to read a paranormal book, but no, this is as contemporary as you can get. I don't read a lot of contemporaries and I'm so glad I didn't know this was one or I may have passed over this one.

Another thing about this book, it's VERY GRAPHIC. One more reason I would've skipped over it if I had've known. But I am so very glad that I didn't know those things going in. I would've missed out on a heartfelt, amazing book.

Ember Bloom falls into a situation that was completely unavoidable on her part. Her grandmother passes away and she's forced to move in with her father. This part reminded me of the movie Save the Last Dance, well the part where she moved from the safety of the suburbs/country into the inner city into a low income neighborhood. Oh and the part where she falls for a 'bad boy' and doesn't care what others think.

Once she falls for Slayton Winslow the book veers into more Cruel Intentions territory, trade Ryan Phillippe with a young Jean Claude Van Damme. This book is not for the faint of heart, there's some pretty tough subject matter.

A plot twist like no other: But the plot...oh my the plot twist I would NEVER ever ever seen coming if I were to bet my life on it! The ending was beautiful in every way!

All-in-All: Disengaged is a story of two broken people finding each other and helping one another heal. I'd recommend this book to those who loved the movie Cruel Intentions and who is okay with explicit scenes. Not for the faint of heart!

I received a free copy from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

I felt like I was watching a horror flick with the clueless chick who happens to walk into the wrong place. And I am screaming noooo don't go, but she never listens.

Ember upset me many times through the book due to her lack of awareness and common sense. Worse was her father and his selfishness that sucked her into a world that being clueless will get you killed. I also grappled to understand Slayton and why he would protect her like he did when he got nothing for it. His POV was enlightening and added so many layers to the story. As the story progressed, I wanted to know more about him, but was given just enough to string me along. From Slayton's pov onward, the story became hard to read, hard because of the underworld that was painted. There were several unexpected twists that I did not see coming, and several times where I found myself holding my breath in anticipation.

This book is well written. The pacing was fast at times and seemed to level out and then speed up again. As told in the description, the content is dark and may be hard to stomach at times. It is even harder to think that women actually endure this type of treatment and there is no escape for them or their children. 4.5 stars

After finishing “Disengaged” I decided to wait a few days before I started writing the review so that I could collect my thoughts and feelings regarding the characters and plotline. In some ways the waiting helped. In other ways it didn’t. I found that while I liked the book, the gritty story, the raw characters, pain-filled plot, I also found that I disliked all of it in certain aspects.

I found the character Ember too trusting and it got her in a lot of trouble, none that she learned from. After her grandmother’s death, Ember goes to live with her father and it is a turbulent household for her, which is nothing she is used to. Rules are set and Ember doesn’t follow a few which leads her into Slayton’s line of sight. Now I found Slayton’s character very curious. His mysterious and rough life style attracted Ember immediately and because of who Slayton was and because of who Ember was, their relationship became forbidden in many ways.

I would have to say that while the story line was good and it had some really dark and twisted plots to it, which kept things interesting, I never really connected with the characters. Ember and Slayton were just Ember and Slayton and I wasn’t invested in them as I have found myself to be with other characters. I think that this is why I had to wait a few days to write this review because I wanted to really think about what made me like this book but not love it.

This was my first novel by Jamie Magee. This dark romance is full of twists and turns. The first few chapters are like no book I have read before in that there is little dialogue and most of the story is all first person perspective inside our heroine's head. As the story unfolds we learn that Ember and our "hero" Slayton have crossed paths due to circumstances outside of her control. The connection between these characters is evident but there are many outside factors coming into play throughout the story to keep them from being able to get truly get to know one another. This story does take some dark turns with our male lead being an enforcer who is forced to fight for his life and Ember is in constant physical danger in various situations.

I appreciated getting to see both Ember and eventually Slayton's depth of character and inner struggles. The number of twists, turns and situational changes in his story is vast. When all is said and done you have a complete story, spanning a number of months and eventually a number of years, that contains a complicated and beautiful couple who had the strength and love to withstand some of the most difficult end horrifying situations. If you enjoy suspense, dark romance, criminal elements and underground fighting storylines this novel is a great choice!

There is only one word I can use to describe this book. Brutal! From page one right to the very last this story is hard to read. I have never read a book with these subjects in them before I honestly didn't read the blurb well enough as I got the biggest shock of my life when things start to go sideways. Saying that I couldn't put this book down I had guests over last night and was so rude and started reading while they were all watching a boxing match that's how much I wanted to finish this book.
The characters are raw and gritty Saylor isn't your typical bad boy next door, he's a mean unapologetic dick! But I couldn't help but feel for him his pain the torment he was going through! Ember shouldn't have had to live the life she got thrust into but she made it work to the best of her ability until the moment she sets her eyes on Saylor Winslow. The events in the book I could not predict I think that's what made it such a good read for me most books are easily figures out before the event happens but this book kept you guessing. The ending I did not see coming a mile away and it totally changed my mind on everything in glad for the way it ended. This is the first book I have read by this author but reading the thank you pages at the end I discovered she has over 20 books released and I will be reading more of her work!

This was my first read for Jamie Magee and I was simply blown away. This book has all the stuff that keeps you reading and not stopping. Ember was raised by her grandmother in a small town; when her grandmother passes she then goes with her father who has barely been in her life. Ember is thrown into a world unlike the one she has lived in all her life with danger everywhere even at home with her dead beat father. Slayton enters Embers life like a very intense storm and in every storm there is something beautiful and that’s what Ember see’s when she first sees Slayton. Ember is very confused about what’s going on between them at first until Slayton explains to Ember the danger she is in because of her father daemons that he can’t let go of. Fast forward Ember gets caught up in all the things Slayton was trying to protect her from the seedy underworld of drugs and sex slave trade, underground fighting and death. Their story is not your everyday love story; their story is dark, gritty a dirty journey plague with sadness, it’s not the everyday happy ending but they get there.

Disengaged

Disengaged by Jamie Magee. I've never read this author before and took a chance by requesting this. Upon the first few chapters I was intrigued by the characters within this story. I wasn't completely enthralled though until the middle of the novel. I will go ahead and say this novel touches on some very sensitive subjects. It literally has a little bit of everything: drugs, sex trafficking, etc. I'll be honest, when I first started this book I thought it wasn't going to really grab me in any way; boy was I wrong! I became hooked and granted parts of it were sordid and dirty but I was unable to put it down and stop until I knew what became of Ember and Slayton. I was not disappointed. The characters develop throughout the whole novel and while they are very young, they are wise beyond their years. Their love story is definitely not a typical happily ever after by any means. It is a nitty, gritty, down and dirty journey to survive through the terrible events which plague their lives. A good must read for a summer vacay!

Ember Blooms has lived somewhat of a sheltered life. Her bible quoting grandmother protected her innocents, despite growing up without a mother and a mostly absent father. That is until the day her grandmother died and she was force to live with her day.
Her life slowly began to spiral after her grandmothers passing. From her fathers dunking outbursts to the overprotective prison he wrapped her from.
Life appears to finally be taking a step forward when Ember gained the freedom of a job.... that is until the day she met Slayton Winslow and is thrust into a the corruptness of the underground world.

WOW! This was an amazing, fresh.. but dark read.
I'm still coming down from the emotional roller coaster of a ride I've been on. Literally could not put this one down. I was questioning and sucked in from the word go.

Ember is a strong yet innocent with a fighter of a spirit. The perfect compliment to Slayon's dark, twisted bad boy persona.

This is my first read by Magee, but I'm no doubt blown away by this one. Will be looking for her name in the future!

A very dark book not used to this from Jamie but hell what a great read. Ember has been made into a drugged out whore against her will, she tried to escape but there is no getting away from these people. Just maybe Slayton will save her can he get her away this time?
Slayton can't believe that she is here he thought that she had gotten away but now she will be dragged down to the bowel of hell.
They could have been so good together even when things were bad Ember was safe with him but he could never get away from the fights and there is only one way out.
Can Slayton fight for her life and can he win for the fight of his life?
A very dark intense story of love that makes sense even when the world seems to be falling apart. I don't know how Ember gets through the day she has already been through so much she is so strong and very fierce. Slayton is her fierce protector and he will never give up on her.
Not for the faint hearted as it deals with the dark side of the sex trade.

Wow such a suspense, dark, crazy, hot,
so emotions I read it straight through then just sat here thinking about what I would write for a review. Ember what a strong girl her dad is a jerk he abuses her treats her like crap and that's Embers only family alive. Ember gets a job and one day Slayton pops up and kisses her and doesn't even explain himself and Ember is drawn to him like Slayton is her soulmate. Slayton and Ember go through so much it will gut your heart out and think about this crazy world we live in.
This story felt so real it scared the crap out of me but made me realize what everyday people could be going through and we don't even know it! Slayton wow at first I was like who the heck is this guy and I didn't like him how quite he was and secretive but then I fell in love with him and couldn't believe how strong of a man he really is! Ember she doesn't even know how strong she is and how loved she reminds me of myself in ways! 5/5 stars deserves more! A must read!!

Impressive!

I am all about reading suspense romance, but this book was hard for me to read. It was very intense and it often felt like there was too much going on to grasp what was going on through most of the book. If felt like Ember & Slayton's relationship was doomed from the start. The thing they see & go through are truly heartbreaking and I found myself hoping things would turn around for them. And just when I thought it there was some light at the end of the tunnel for these two...something even worse would happen. I was pleasantly surprised by the end of the book.

If you are into books with tons of action and lots of dark twisted moments the keep you guessing then this is a book you should definitely check out!

I received this book through Net Galley for a review!

This is my first book to read by Jamie Magee and I loved it. I can't wait to read other books by this author. Disengaged is a dark romance with religious undertones in the crime world. The tension between the main characters in the beginning is just off the charts. However, you never really know how everything is going to play out. The world they are immersed in is dangerous, deadly and complicated. I loved how the plot played out and especially the last few chapters that really showed beyond the here and now. If you are a lover of dark reads, then I believe this is a must read!

This book was okay, but had the potential to be amazing. The beginning really kind of put me off, and it took me until the end to warm back up to the story. Jamie Magee jumps right into action as soon as the book starts, but the events were so disjointed and confusing that it takes a while to catch on to what exactly has happened. In a nutshell, the female MC, Ember, has been "kidnapped" by local bad boy Slayton. They don't know each other - have never met - but Ember seems perfectly content to be dragged all over town on the back of a motorcycle, getting pawed and kissed, and never getting one word in explanation. This guy ends up taking her to his storage building where he lives, and locking her inside with him. No questions asked, no explanations given. Blew my mind, but not in a good way. And all because she was attracted to him at first glance. He walked right up to her and kissed her and then took her. Yeah, not really believable to me.

So anyway, it does get better after this, and I did really like both Ember and Slayton, but Ember was still a little too passive for me to really LOVE her. Slayton is the ultimate bad boy with a heart of gold, but that's been done a million times over, so not really that special. The story was new and refreshing, and I liked how it all ended up. I especially liked the end of the book where we got to see into the future for quite a ways, and received closure.

Overall, it was a good read. Had a couple of problems that bugged me, but nothing too major. Definitely worth the read if this is your thing.

Ember Bloom was raised by her grandmother and stayed there happily until her grandmother died. She is in thrust into a life with her deadbeat father who she really doesn't know in a world she can't comprehend. Then one day fate runs her right into Slayton Winslows arms, he takes her yet somehow it still feels as though he is freeing her. Her brain tells her not to trust him but her heart puts all her faith in him. Life never turns out how you plan in and your devil may just turn out to be your savior.

I am not really sure how I feel about this book. I read it, I got into somewhat, I liked the characters, so why my rating isn't higher is hard to say. I will say like I just never really felt like I got to know these characters, I got the story, I understood what was going on but always felt like I was right on the surface, never going deep enough. I guess somehow I wanted more, more story, more depth of characters, yet is was still a book that I went thru at a good pace. Books like this confuse me because I liked them but they still leave me feeling like I was missing something.

I have a hard time with this one becuase I did like it but there was just something about it holding me back from really liking it.
