Hellbeasts

Rate this book
When restlessness drives Shadow out of his MC's clubhouse and into the night, the last thing he expected was to find a half-dead werewolf. Shadow has never been known for his altruism, but he takes the wounded man back to his motorcycle club, the Hellbeasts.

Rand doesn't know who attacked him, but suspects at least one person from his own pack is involved. But even that might not be as bad as waking up in the midst of a group of misfit weres who don't seem to like him. Especially Shadow, the man charged with taking care of Rand, as compelling to Rand as he is frightening.

But before he and Shadow can work out what exactly they are and want to be to each other, Rand's attackers show up to finish the job.

This story should definitely have a dub-con label attached. Wasn't expecting it and it was jarring. I don't mind reading "out there" shifter stories but I don't like being thrust into a storyline where characters indulge in questionable behavior in sexual situations. Rand... ugh.

My issue with the books is not the writing, which is fine. It's not the characters, which are well-constructed and deep. The plot is even interesting. The issue I have is that this book is advertised as a romance.

It's not a romance. It's a rapist and his confused victim. I stopped reading before the end, because I'd had enough. I hate to use a buzzword like 'rape culture,' but here it is in spades. Rape is presented as being sex simply because the victim got turned on. That's not how it works. What the victim feels is absolutely irrelevant - their lack of consent makes it rape regardless. After watching this poor guy who's been badly injured and dominated say 'no' for the third time while his attacker expresses every intent of raping him regardless of how much he struggles, I decided that I have higher standards than this book.

Look, if you want to write a 'rape fantasy,' go right ahead - but do not, DO NOT advertise it as a romance.

Hellbeasts by Katya Harris is a paranormal romance M/M short story about Shadow, a werewolf and Rand, the werewolf he found half dead in the desert.

At the beginning of the story, Shadow's restlessness drives him out of MC's Clubhouse and into the night in order to go for a run. The last thine he expects is to find Rand in the middle of the desert half dead. Unable to leave the unconscious Rand where he is, Shadow picks Rand up and takes him back to the HellBeasts Clubhouse.

The Hellbeasts are a group of misfit weres ranging from a were-cobra to a were-wolf.. A were-hawk to a were-hyena and so many others. All cast out of their packs for one reason or another. It's only fitting that Rand is brought there considering when he was left for dead he suspected at least one of his own pack was trying to kill him due to his recently assertion into the Alpha position after his father was murdered.

From the moment Shadow had Rand in his arms, he started to change into a different man in so far as the fact that having Rand in his arms felt like home.

Reading this short story, I found it fairly predictable from the from the beginning. Boy meets boy. Boy takes care of boy and nurses him back to health. Boy falls in love with boy. With that said, it was a sweet story with a couple of hot sex scenes mixed with a power play in the beginning between Shadow and Rand. The characters and the world building were well developed for a short story.

I would recommend Hellbeasts to anyone who enjoys MM romance, motorcycle club stories and shorts. I did have to give it a three star rating though for predictability and shortness.

Hellbeasts will be available for pre-order on November 8th at the following link:

** COPY RECEIVED THROUGH NETGALLEY **

This is my first story by Katya Harris and I can't help but wonder – how did I never read her work before?

So, let's start with some necessary warnings – there's some dub-con if you turn your head and squint sideways. There's minor spanking and Dom/sub elements, but it's nothing all that strong or overpowering. It's actually the perfect fit for two dominant wolves battling each other.

Sure, there were a lot of editing issues, but it's an unedited, uncorrected proof so that's all going to be fixed before publishing, I have no doubt.

I absolutely fell in love with Rand and Shadow from the first. Right from page one, I was hooked on the story, but mostly important on their chemistry. Boy-o was it good!

The MC aspect was just right, as was the whole shifter/wolf/were aspect. Neither overpowered the other or seemed far-fetched. Both blended together perfectly and created a brilliant atmosphere, chemistry and brotherhood that I'd love to explore further in maybe a novel or six? Please?

Favourite Quote

“They were halfway there when Shadow realized something. Beneath the smells of blood and pain, this man, this wolf, smelled like home.”

“Rand didn't bother to argue even though he wanted to. The whole world was pain, and he longed with every battered cell to sink into unconsciousness to escape it. The only problem was he was quite sure that Shadow would drag him kicking and screaming back to wakefulness.”

“The heat of Shadow's dominance was warmer than the water had been. Rand felt like his still damp skin was about to start sizzling.”

Hellbeasts is part of the Roughhouse Raiders series this one is by Katya Harris. I do not think you have to read this series in order. I know this is the first one I have ever read of it. I enjoyed the story a lot and want more.
This is a pretty fast story as far as the pacing of it. I do wish it were a bit slower, maybe more developed but over all really good book, did make me want more from the series itself.
Rand when we meet him is half dead on the side of the road. He has no idea who attacked him or why. He does have suspicions of who it could have been. His own pack. But he is in too bad of shape to do anything about it at the moment.
Shadow is the leader of a misfit band of shifters who are part of a MC biker gang. We have a little of everything in this gang. But it works for them. They have a hard time trusting Rand. Shadow though knows Rand is his mate and he will do whatever it takes to protect what is his.
I love werewolf stories and as far as that goes I got what I loved out of this book. I would like to see more of the series and perhaps a little more world development. But other than that this is a great fast paced love story I was happy to have read.

I was granted an ARC by netgalley to write an honest review of Katya Harris' Hellbeasts.

Shadow wasn't expecting to find his mate in the desert, but once he does he has no intention of letting him go.

Rand has just inherited the position as Alpha, but forces are at work to usurp his position. After being left to die in the desert, then rescued by Shadow, and then taken in by the Hellbeasts, Rand begins to wonder if he's good enough to be Alpha of his pack after all.

Shadow and Rand find themselves fighting for their lives. Will they pull through or will their foe succeed in taking the Alpha title

This is the first book I've read of Katya Harris and overall I thought the book okay. It's a quick read and easy to follow along. I think it was a good attempt, but it felt like it was trying too hard. It was almost like the author was trying to force certain ideas and behaviors into the story and it didn't quite fit. Or it might have worked out if the author developed the characters a little more.

*I voluntarily read a Review Copy of this book. All opinion stated are solely my own and no one else's*

Rand was viciously attacked and on the brink of death, when Shadow rescued him. Will Rand's presence bring trouble to the MC?

This was a short yet well written book and I really enjoyed it. Rand and Shadow had sizzling, hot chemistry. Both are alphas, but without a doubt Shadow was stronger and oozed dominance. I couldn't stop laughing when a woman was trying to sit on Rand's lap but was pushed away by Shadow lol - jealous much? Rand and Shadow were beautifully matched: neither overshadowed the other. I enjoyed the two alpha wolves battling out who gets to be on top.

The plot was intriguing yet exciting and I liked the idea of an MC consisting of different shifters: it was original yet innovative. This was a great read with mild spanking and small elements of sub/dom.

This novella is big on gritty atmosphere and world building but light on emotional romance. Given this is a shifter MC world, the MATES concept is the backbone of the romance so it's physical and not emotional. Still, I liked the shifter MC club here and will likely pick up more in this series when they're published.

Read in one sitting, nice quick read.

Had a good story and some interesting characters, a little too many for such a short story though.

Okay for a quick MM read and good writing

All up it was an okay story I dont think I will continue on with the series.

Thanks Santa.

This is a bit more hard-edged. Shadow, exiled form his pack has taken refuge with a motorcycle band of equal misfits of all animal shapes and sizes. They are really on the edge. One who would gladly kill people and his brother goes along on his booty calls to make sure he doesn't. That kind of darker edge. Shadow finds a nearly dead guy out running and brings him back and before long is "mine mine mining" all over him. Seems some guys from Rand's pack tried to kill him even though he's the alpha. to be honest, I never really understood that part. He won the title fair and square. Anyway, seems he's not much of an alpha and they aren't about to give up.

Some people saw this as dub/con, I didn't really get a negative vibe off of it, but I'm not overly sensitive to that theme but some folks might be. I also tend to be more forgiving of such things in shifter worlds where animals are closer to the surface than if it was just a contemporary with the same aspects. If you like darker shifter stories, more aggressive, then this might be the one for you.

From Magnolia Reviews: Three Petals

I thought the world building in this story, while not unique, was well done, however the story lacked any emotional depth. That lack really hurt my enjoyment of the story. I do recommend this book, however I do so with reservation.

Well… this book had a lot of potential, some of which it achieved some of which was sorely lacking.

It’s a very, very, very bloody and gory book. More than I’ve seen in awhile, and especially when you consider how short the story is. It’s definitely not for the feint of heart.

Second, while I’d say it has a HEA, it’s nowhere near something warm or fuzzy. Well, except for the shifters part of the story. * wink

Shadow and Rand do end up being mates but they pretty much fight one another and the others right up until the end. There are no – I mean NOT ONE – sweet or tender words from one to the other beyond “you’re mine” which is – I guess – sort of tender- ish. They battle one another for dominance and while it’s consensual, their smexy times aren’t loving. At all.

I thought the world-building was fascinating. The author is a good writer, with interesting descriptions and a well-thought out “twist” at the end, but this – for me – just didn’t satisfy in the romance department. I’d be interested in seeing more from this MC, but I’d be leery that it’d be more of the same. I love the fact that it’s unique and varied shifters, who keep a lot of their animal natures in their human forms – that was neat and interesting. However, this was more erotica than anything else, and a bit too violent for my tastes.

So… if you’re in the mood for something fairly blood thirsty and not a bit sentimental or heart-warming, this is for you. If you want a little romance in your romance… keep looking.

From that review: " Another in the Hellbeasts series from Less Than Three Press from numerous authors that revolves around a werebeast motorcycle club, I thought this one had promise but in the end didn't completely deliver. I loved the character of Shadow, and the others from the Hellbeasts MC. They are the best drawn of all of the characters here in the story. Rand is perhaps the one with the least amount of support to his personality. We are "told" about his history in different sections of the story but never actually get it from his point of view. He just feels too much of a submissive to have ever fit the description of the wolf he's supposed to have been. He's sweet, wounded, and yes sort of vague. The complete opposite of Shadow. Ironic."

Rand is deserted in the desert after being brutally attacked but he doesn’t remember anything. Shadow finds him saves his life more than once. Will these two alpha/dominant wolf shifters survive the Hellbeasts MC or will there be a fight? Will Rand go back to his pack or stay with Shadow?

I loved the characters and the story. Now this is a M/M shifter MC book, I know confusing, but not really. I don’t mind shifter books and love MC books. However I’m not overly fond of M/M books. This one was written well though. I didn’t love it but I didn’t hate it. The story was unique. The characters were well written. The flow and pace worked well along with the story. But the writing style is what kept me from hating the M/M aspect of this book.

I will totally be looking for more books in this series or by this author. I truly enjoyed the story.

This book packs a lot of punch for being on the shorter side.

The Hellbeasts are a band of misfit shifters who came together to form their own pack in the form of an MC. It consist of many types of shifters, from tigers to snakes. When werewolf shifter, Shadow, goes out on a run on his own, he finds another wolf shifter left for dead. There's only one option he feels he has, bring him back and try and help him.

Rand, Alpha of a small nearby pack Wales, he's not quite sure who attacked him but has some ideas.
when threats are made against the Hellbeasts, loyalties within the ranks are tested.

I thought this was a great storyline and full of great characters. I love the aspect of different shifters coming together. The story is completely engaging, and has some pretty unexpected twists.

What I didn't love was Shadows overly dominate tendencies that bordered non-con. But, he was also still pretty sexy in his domineering ways, especially towards the end. I also wished it was a bit longer, but I imagine more stories from this pack. I am super curious about one Alpha were-Tiger :)
