Grab your Eggo waffles and get ready for a visit to Hawkins, Indiana—just don’t forget the fairy lights!
If you devoured Stranger Things on Netflix and you’re looking to fill the demogorgon-sized hole in your life, then look no further than Notes from the Upside Down. This fan-tastic guide has every fact you could ever wish for—from insights into the origins of the show, including the mysterious Montauk Project conspiracy theory; a useful eighties playlist (because, of course); and much more.
If you’ve ever wondered why Spielberg is such a huge influence, which Stephen King books you need to read (hint: pretty much all of them), or how State Trooper David O’Bannon earned his name, then this book is for you.
Entertaining, informative, and perfect for fans of eighties pop culture, Notes from the Upside Down is the Big Mac of unofficial guides to Stranger Things—super-sized and special sauce included.
When the Netflix show, Stranger Things, debuted it didn't take long for it to catch on and develop quite the following. It's a bit of a nostalgia trip back to the 80s with a compelling story line and a terrific cast of actors, in particular the child stars of the show. This book was published before season 2 had aired and therefore only goes into detail about episodes from the first season.
As with most unofficial books about tv shows and films, this book doesn't really contain any insider information about the show. That's not to say you won't learn anything but it is all stuff that at some point been published in print or tv interviews conducted with the creators and actors. While each episode has a chapter devoted to it, most of the book delves into more of how the creators and writers were inspired by other films, books, and tv shows. The book feels like it was padded with loosely connected stuff in order to stretch the page count. In terms of info that is just about the show, there just isn't a lot of substance to the book.
I won a free copy of this book in a Goodreads giveaway but was under no obligation to post a review. All views expressed are my honest opinion.
As soon as Stranger Things was released on Netflix, I watched it all in two or three days. There’s just something about the show – the 80s setting, the dark science fiction theme, the soundtrack, the incredible cast… I love it so much and try and make EVERYONE watch it. Hence why I was interested in reading a book about the show.
Unfortunately, this book does not do the show any justice. It is fan written, and not at all linked to anyone who worked on the show. The formula of each chapter soon became very repetitive: a detailed recap of each episode (which felt so unnecessary, I don’t need each episode described frame by frame thanks), some bonus information such as inspirations, music etc, and then ‘homework’ questions (basically a small quiz about the episode, with things you’d only notice if you’d read the questions before watching).
I appreciate that the author is a big fan of the show, and he tried to inject some humour into the book as well, but it just completely missed and felt a little ‘try hard’. I don’t think I would recommend this book, even to the biggest Stranger Things fans.
I received a copy of this book for free from the publisher, in exchange for an honest review. Originally posted on my blog, Rinn Reads.
„Notes from the 80s“ wäre meines Erachtens nach der passendere Titel gewesen. Was sagen die Entwickler dazu?
This was a fun read! I got the ebook from the library, but I really want a physical copy of this. There’s so much info about music, movies and books that I’d love to be able to just get back to it when ever I want to. There’s also a lot of footnotes, which didn’t work on the ebook that well as they were at the end of each chapter, and going back to check what they were refering to got old pretty fast. So yeah, totally read this if you loved Stranger Things, but maybe don’t read it in the e-format.
Each chapter goes over one episode of season one. And after each episode there’s sections like Stranger sounds(music from the episode),Honorable strangers(mostly side characters and Familiar things(movies,tv shows etc that the episode was inspired by or just similarities). There’s also these Dna of Stranger Things sections that talk about all the stuff the writers were inspired by etc. Names like Stephen King(I was fan girling hard on those parts!),Spielberg,Carpenter and Cronenberg were mentioned often.
There was lots of interesting info in this book. It would be great used as a reference book for all things Stranger Things. Watching all the movies&shows, listening all the music... It was also written with great humor, and I love that! There are quizzes, insteuctions how to roleplay the characters and even a recipe for an upside down cake which you ”go eat in the forest while screaming”😂
Fun&quick read. Would recommend to everyone who wants to get deeper into the world of Hawkins and the Upsidedown. It helps if you’re kind of a nerd(like I am).

-Guy Adams 😆😁💚
LMAO!
A great companion to Stranger Things series. (you NEED to watch it in Netflix) I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT! One of my favorites! I'm also excited for season 3! Yay!
I've been in a book slump for almost a month. I'm so thankful for the author.ü
Some of my favorite parts : THE DNA OF STRANGER THINGS, FOOTNOTES! YAY! FACTS ABOUT MKULTRA, and THINGS TO MAKE AND DO! 😆
Very informative! Never a dull moment! I really enjoyed reading it. ♡
I don't know about you, but I love Stranger Things. If you haven't watched it, stop right now and go watch it. Not because there are spoilers below (there are), but because it's literally that good. I'll wait.
Notes from the Upside Down is a collection of all of the nerdy things related to Stranger Things. Now, I would never write a companion novel for a TV series, I'm more of a closet nerd, I'm very grateful for Guy Adams writing this, because now I can go watch all movies and TV shows, listen to all of the music, and read all of the books that are referenced and inspired the Duffer Brothers.
This was definitely a fun book to read and I definitely think any lover of Stranger Things would find joy in this book, along with some fun facts that aren't on the internet.
I read this because I'm a big fan of Stranger Things and I liked the book, I'm not saying I didn't, but it did get a bit dull in places.
Sure, you now have trivia knowledge for season 1 of Stranger Things, but that's basically all it is. Trivia Knowledge about the cast, influences from other movies/TV shows, and the musical soundtracks for each episode. I did enjoy reading about MKUltra in its little section.
I did like this book, but I think it could have been more I guess. Anyways, if you want trivia knowledge to best your friends in a round of ST S1 trivia, then get this book. If not, then don't bother.
Not the 80s but in the 90s I was a fan of X-Files and I read official and unofficial guides, to learn more about the show. Even if now we have everything available on the net, I still found this books as enjoyable as I used to for X-Files.
While I’m waiting for the release of the new Stranger Things episodes, this book gave me a list of movies and some books to discover and enjoy.
This book was actually way more informative than I thought it would be for a psycho-fan of the series such as myself. The author was quite entertaining in his prose voice and said a lot of the thoughts I had while watching the series.
I had to only give it 3 stars because, as some other reviewers have mentioned, it gets pretty monotonous reading the same exact formula for each chapter. I think a lot of the stuff in there was unnecessary... blank pages for notes? "Homework" assignments? Really?
The author jumps from giving craft ideas to mentioning sexual orgies and making Trump jokes (keep politics away from my nerd world, thank you very much!) so I have literally NO idea who this book is marketed towards. Adult fans of the show? But they probably won't be doing all those arts and crafts. Kid fans of the show? Well I don't think making jokes about bodily fluids and bdsm is really the way to go for them. I enjoyed a lot of what I read, I just feel like this book had a lot of great info but not so great of a concept behind it.
Was will man mehr?
Schreibstil & Cover
This is a nonfiction book that takes you behind the scenes of the popular series "Stranger Things" with facts about the Duffer brothers, the creators of the show, the inspiration for the show, the soundtrack, the characters and the talented actors and actresses who portray them. Personally, this book didn't really fulfill my expectations. I was hoping there would be more information on how the scenes were created and inspired, etc., but it focused a lot more on the authors and directors that inspired the show and what they wrote than the actual show itself, and that made it a lot harder for me to finish the book, because quite frankly, it was a bit boring in my opinion. Honestly, it's not worth the read, but if you really enjoy the show and want to know more about the inspiration for it, and you enjoy nonfiction, then this book is for you.
No me aportó nada.
I needed to fill the “demagorgon-sized” hole in my life after finishing season 2, and this book helped to fill that void. It was interesting to read all the 80’s influences and references that are in the show, and to learn more about the Duffer brothers. My only complaints would be that the resources list at the end does not include the most credible sources, and I would’ve liked just a little bit more insight into the episodes.
