Karina Halle's After All is a deliciously complicated romance, an addictive, fast paced story surrounding a wedding reception quickie turned publicity stunt that's rife with sexual tension, filthy banter, and unexpected emotion. Alyssa Martin finds herself the target of tabloid fodder when photos of her hallway hookup with Emmett Hill, a successful Canadian tv star, are sold to the media. In an attempt at damage control to protect Emmett's already rocky reputation, his publicist enlists Alyssa, a "normal" girl, to act as his new flame. Of course things get super messy, with the pair navigating this faux relationship on a very blurry line between what is fake and what is real.
After how much I absolutely loved Before I Ever Met You, it was so exciting to get another standalone romance that involved characters I loved so much but in a refreshing new storyline. Emmett and Alyssa's romance is a complete 180 from what their friends went through in their book, but the personalities I fell hard for in Before I Ever Met You added humor and lightness to this sometimes heavy story. And I just adored that. (You don't have to read Will and Jackie's book before you read this one but I highly recommend reading it at some point because it's just too good to skip!) If you've already read it, well, you'll be just as excited as I was to get more from Will and Jackie as they help their friends navigate their rocky situation in After All. If you haven't read it yet, know that Emmett and Alyssa's story is a satisfying romance all by itself but I wouldn't be surprised if you immediately want to run to see exactly what lead up to the wedding that got this ball rolling in the first place.
After All is much more than a sexy publicity stunt between strangers. This book is definitely steamy, the dialogue between Emmett and Alyssa made me blush; it drips with innuendo when it isn't being shot back and forth in the throes of passion. It's hot... so, so hot. After All is also laced with humor with Halle's smart wit peeking through at just the right times, giving a lighthearted quality to an otherwise messy situation. But Emmett's story is gritty, layered with some heavy truths, some hard hitting issues that feel all too real at times. In typical Karina Halle fashion, this sticky, sensual romance puts a spotlight on an ugly topic we don't want to acknowledge but one that shouldn't be ignored. Karina Halle does this again and again in her books and she does it well, weaving real world issues into stories that are not only meant to sweep us away, but also ground us in a bit of cold hard truth. After All is the full package. It's one of Halle's sexiest stories, one of the sweetest. It's full of angst and emotional uncertainty but it's also laced with friendship and humor and drama that never quit. It's an entertaining page turner and it's going on my long list of Karina Halle novels that I'd recommend to anyone looking to fall right off the cliff with characters you can't help but fall in love with.
