An addictively readable new domestic suspense about a wife, her husband, and the woman who is supposedly her best friend.
THE WIFE: For Alice, life has never been better. With her second husband, she has a successful business, two children, and a beautiful house.
HER HUSBAND: Alice knows that life could have been different if her first husband had lived, but Nathan's arrival into her life gave her back the happiness she craved.
HER BEST FRIEND: Through the ups and downs of life, from celebratory nights out to comforting each other through loss, Alice knows that with her best friend Beth by her side, they can survive anything together. So when Nathan starts acting strangely, Alice turns to Beth for help. But soon, Alice begins to wonder whether her trust has been misplaced . . .
Sandie Jones has worked as a freelance journalist for over twenty years, and has written for publications including the Sunday Times, Woman’s Weekly and the Daily Mail. She lives in London with her husband and three children. The Other Woman is her debut novel.
I read this almost a month ago and I've put off writing a review because there are so many things I want to say about this book but I'm having a hard time trying to find the words without giving too much away about the plot. So my apologies, but this review is going to be pretty vague. I will say though I had so much fun reading this one. If you enjoyed the author's previous novel, The Other Woman, I highly recommend checking this one out as I think this one is better.
Alice runs a successful business with her second husband, Nathan, and is also busy raising two children. Life is pretty darn good, or at least it seemed that way until Nathan started acting differently. So Alice turns to her best friend, Beth, for support. And let's just say life is about to get real interesting for Alice whether she likes it or not.
This might sound like a stupid statement but in my opinion whether or not you like this book is going to depend on your reading requirements for the genre. Overall, the most important thing to me when I read a book in the suspense, thriller, or mystery genre is I want to be entertained and just have a fun reading experience and that was the case here. I also like that feeling of confusion in which you think you know what's going on but you also doubt yourself the more and more you read. Is the story perfect? No, but it was one fun and wild ride which is good enough for me. I needed a nice distraction type read because my life is a bit chaotic right now and this book definitely delivered.
Thank you to the publisher and BookishFirst for sending me a free advance copy! I was under no obligation to post a review here and all views expressed are my honest opinion.
Many moons ago (November of 2017 to be exact), I had the privilege of reading an early manuscript of Sandie Jones's debut novel The Other Woman, and I knew once I finished it that the publishing industry had found something really special. I was completely shocked by the ending, and perhaps that set my expectations to unrealistic standards while going into The First Mistake. Don't get me wrong, this was another entertaining page-turner, but unfortunately I found that it fell into many of the same traps that psychological thrillers today seem to keep doing. Obviously, we've reached a point where it's difficult to find any twists that haven't been done before, and it has been causing quite a buzz amongst readers of what the future holds for the genre. I sympathize with suspense novelists everywhere when I say that it's quite a predicament, and not one that I have an answer for. All that to say, I feel like this book fell into the realm where, if it had been published in an earlier era, perhaps it wouldn't have felt so predictable.
Poor Alice has been living in survival mode for quite some time. After the sudden disappearance of her husband, Tom, she fell down a dark hole of depression and anxiety. Even after a decade has passed, with a new husband, an additional daughter between them, and a successful, thriving design business, Alice is continually batting away anxiety, drama, and everything negative. I can't get into too much detail here, but the story consists of heaps of drama coming from every angle of Alice's life. There are problems in her marriage, problems with friends, problems with her kids at school, and her own personal demons she's battling. It's a lot going on, and I appreciate how the author was able to tie it all together by the ending, but this might have been one of the first ways the book became predictable. With so many moving parts, I found there was really only one set path the story could take, and that took away a bit of the surprise factor by the novel's climax.
The pacing was super fast in this one, and I only found myself dragging a bit when the narrator changes in the middle and gives us a past tense view. The entire middle portion is a huge reason why my star rating went down to a 3; it felt unnecessary as everything we find out in that portion is exactly what I assumed would be written upon starting it, and only serves as confirming a backstory. This was just personal preference, and may work better for other readers than it did for myself. If you're looking for a fun, compulsive read this summer to pass the time, I'd still recommend picking this up. I'm glad I read it, and will continue to look out for more from the author.
*Many thanks to the publisher for providing my review copy.
The First Mistake was a delightfully twisted weekend read! If you're looking for an escape, this is where it's at.
I completed this in under 24-hours. I literally could not put it down. I was properly whisked away into another person's crazy existence and that was exactly what I needed!
Alice's life hasn't always been perfect, although from the outside it may appear that way.
She lost her first husband, Tom, a decade ago and as expected, the tragedy hit her extremely hard. Her young daughter was really the only thing that helped her pull through the grief.
She has since remarried, her new husband, Nathan, seems like a catch. The couple own a successful design company and have added another little girl to the family.
Alice feels motivated and content. Life is good.
Unfortunately, Nathan suddenly starts to behave curiously and all Alice's old anxieties rise to the surface.
Her best friend, Beth, who always has her back, tells her she has every right to be suspicious.
Spurred on by Beth's encouragement, she begins to look into Nathan's odd behaviors. Soon Alice wonders if Beth is actually someone she can trust.
There were so many twists, turns and revelations in this book, I could not put it down. My head was spinning. I trusted no one, not even Alice!
I could never have guessed the conclusion to this, not in my wildest dreams!
Thank you so much to the publisher, Minotaur Books, for providing me with a copy to read and review. I am looking forward to reading more Domestic Suspense from Sandie Jones!
Alice appears to have it all. She has a great family, a wonderful home, and a successful business.
Alice's first husband, Tom died over ten years ago, and it was devastating. But eventually, she met and fell in love with Nathan and married for the second time.
Alice and Nathan have been trying to land a deal for a big project in Japan. AT Designs is the company that Alice and Tom started. Nathan joined the company and takes care of the business side of things while Alice takes care of the creative part.
Alice's best friend is Beth. Beth’s daughter Millie goes to school with Olivia. Alice and Beth are very close and supportive of each other. They both lost their husbands, although it was in very different ways. Beth's ex cheated on her and Beth is still quite angry about it.
Alice is thankful she has such a loving and loyal husband in Nathan.
Then Nathan starts acting strangely. But he seems to have an answer for everything. Alice WANTS to believe what he tells her, but her head and heart say two different things.
Is she being played for a fool?
One night Alice is browsing Facebook when she comes across a profile that shakes her entire world.
Luckily she has her best friend to lean on…
But after her next conversation with Beth, Alice’s world explodes yet again.
Is there anyone Alice can trust?
So many secrets, so many lies, and a whole lot of drama had me quickly flipping the pages of this engaging psychological suspense novel.
The novel is broken into three parts. Part one is Alice’s point of view. Part two is from Beth’s perspective and part three brings everything together. There were times I found myself annoyed with Alice and Beth and some of the decisions they made, but I still thought this was a very enjoyable read.
“The First Mistake” was an interesting story of suspicion, jealousy, and betrayal. It also had some surprising twists. I was positive I had things figured out, but in most cases, I was way off.
I'd like to thank Minotaur Books for providing me with an advanced copy of this novel. All opinions are my own.
This is a book I’ve been hearing such great things about lately. As anxious as I was to immediately dig into it, I feared the hype may be overrated, leaving one disappointed reader. Well...my worries couldn’t be further from reality! I loved it! It most certainly deserves all the buzz it’s been receiving.
Early on I was sure I had a handle on this twisty gem. Not even close. The curves never quit coming! And the ending...BAM!
How well do you really know the love of your life...or your best friend for that matter! Who can you really trust? Are you sure?
If you love a masterfully crafted, twisty thriller guaranteed to keep you in the dark guessing throughout...look no further! This is the book for you! As much as I enjoyed Sandie Jones previous book The Other Woman, her latest release blows that one away, a must read! Highly recommend!
Thank you to NetGalley, St. Martin’s Press-Minotaur Books and Sandie Jones for an ARC to read and review.
Truthfully though, the more thrillers I read, the more I feel that my life isn't nearly as screwed up as I think it is sometimes!
Alice had an idyllic life with her husband Tom, a growing business, and a beautiful young daughter. His sudden death at a young age tore Alice apart, leaving her shattered, and unable to regain control of her life for a short while. Ultimately she realized her daughter meant the world to her, and she owed it to her—to the both of them—to pull herself together.
Years later, Alice feels like she has a second chance at happiness. Her second husband, Nathan, has stood by her through thick and thin, indulging her anxieties and her fears. She now has two daughters, and the business she started building with Tom is now flourishing.
But when Nathan starts acting suspiciously, Alice's sense of security starts to erode. Her best friend, Beth, tells her that she has every right to be concerned about Nathan, but Beth is dealing with her own issues as well. And then bombshell after bombshell is revealed, leaving Alice to wonder whom she can trust—and how much of her life and her relationships have been a lie.
Sandie Jones throws a lot of twists into The First Mistake, so I'm being purposely vague on my plot summary, even though many of the surprises seemed well-telegraphed early on. But having read so many thrillers, some of the things I was expecting didn't materialize, and I always love when an author pulls a fast one on me!
This was a quick and satisfying read, although there was definitely more than enough melodrama to go around. Jones created some complex characters, none of whom is entirely likable, but I couldn't tear myself away from the book even as I was getting annoyed with how long it seemed to take for characters to confront one another.
I definitely expect to see the gorgeous cover of The First Mistake in the hands of many readers this summer. Suspicion, jealousy, marital dysfunction, and melodrama? Sounds like the recipe for a perfect summer read. And with Jones as the chef, there's a lot to savor here.
NetGalley and Minotaur Books provided me an advance copy of this book in exchange for an unbiased review. Thanks for making it available!
Alice is a happily married mother of two. Nathan really has been a life saver and she loves him desperately. Not as much as her first husband Tom, but still, enough. Their business is thriving and life is good.
Beth is Alice’s best friend. Beth has always struggled - ever since her boyfriend left her alone and pregnant.
Through thick and thin, Beth and Alice have always had each other. Who knew they would be tested with something like this?
What happens when it turns out you don’t really know the people you love the most? Trust is a slippery slope.
It’s the First Mistake you make that’s always the hardest.. just ask Alice.
What a fabulous suspenseful read “The First Mistake” by Sandie Jones was! Gripping my kindle for dear life I couldn’t swipe fast enough! Though I had my suspicions early on and was right (I love that!), I throughly enjoyed this wild read. If you haven’t gotten your hands on this one yet, I highly recommend you do.
Thank you to NetGalley, Minotaur Books and Sadie JOnes for an arc of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
Published on Goodreads, NetGalley an Amazon on 6.22.19.
I had fun reading The First Mistake by Sandie Jones. It was a quick easy read for me and had my mind reeling with all the twists and turns. Despite the fact that I was correct with some of my suspicions about what was going on the in the book, I enjoyed finding out why things were happening and who was doing exactly what.
Alice lost her first husband in an accident, had a nervous breakdown and was 'saved' by her second husband, Nathan, who now works with her in the business that Alice and her first husband created. Beth is Alice's best friend and the person Alice confides in when she starts having suspicions concerning Nathan. Then Alice's life goes farther downhill when she finds that her life with her first husband could have been a lie.
Things get twisted and tangled and it's hard to know who to believe or whether Alice is overly paranoid and mixing too many drinks and medicines to even think clearly. One minute I'm thinking that Alice is way to quick with her anger and blame and the next minute I don't trust anyone in the book. Thank you to St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for this ARC.
A fast-paced and twisty read that is full of twists and turns!
I absolutely loved this author's debut novel, The Other Woman, and went into this one with high expectations. This one was more predictable, but I was pleased at how the reveals slowly expose what is going on beneath the surface. I figured out all the big twists, but I was still pleased. Still found myself whispering...what the heck is going on here!
It moved quickly and kept me interested and the whole the wife, the husband, the best friend triangle was very clever and fun! There is so much going on and it is just so darn entertaining to put all the clues together and have your "awe" moment. Even though I saw it coming! And the ending .... I admit .....was a shocker!
Recommend for a fast, light, and FUN vacation read!
Thanks to ST Martins Press for my review copy! This one published on June ,2019
I like THE FIRST MISTAKE. I was afraid I wouldn't.
I like it mucho mucho more than The Other Woman and since I gave that one a three star rating, it seems only fair to give Jones’s newest novel four big ones.
There are only three main characters in THE FIRST MISTAKE and I love that. We have a wife and husband and wife’s best friend. That’s it. These three characters become so entwined, confused and convoluted--- you can’t even imagine!
While the writing borders on a bit cheesy for me, the characters are fleshed out and the situations are somewhat believable.
Jones really sells this saga in an interesting way. Similar to one of my faves, The Wife Between Us, the first part of the book is told from the wife’s viewpoint and the next part is told from the best friend’s point of view. I have to leave it at that. The fun is in trying to put the puzzle pieces together!
Serious psyche-suspense lovers will likely figure out what is going on a bit early in the book. Bummer. But, it is still a very fun read with its twisty story structure and snappy-fast dialogue. The ending is super-satisfying! That counts a lot in my book.
THE FIRST MISTAKE practically screams summertime read. It's a light story to quickly read and oh, so fun. I’m sure you will be seeing it at the beach, pool and everywhere!
Thanks to Netgalley for allowing me to read and review the advanced galley. This opinion is strictly my own.
Trust is a tricky thing, especially when it is misplaced, lost, damaged or ruined...
Alice believes she has it all. After the death of her first husband, she has found love again, has a best friend and healthy children. But when her husband, Nathan begins acting strangely, Alice confides in her best friend, Beth, but is that the best idea?
Secrets, lies, betrayal, doubt, anger, deceit, where will it end and how/why did it begin?
This was a fast read full of twists and turns. Just when you think you have it figured out; Jones has another reveal waiting in the wings. This alone had me turning (or swiping) the pages as fast as I could. I found this book to be compelling, twisted, and thoroughly entertaining.
If you loved Sandie Jones' debut novel The Other Woman, then I urge you to pick up her upcoming The First Mistake when it hits shelves this Spring. This fast-paced domestic thriller packs a punch—friendship, love and relationships, sex, betrayal—it has it all.
The story is centered around a wife, her husband, and her best friend, but the mystery behind all three characters is not your typical domestic thriller. Alice and her husband own an architectural design company and its become a flourishing and lucrative business by its own rite. Alice doesn't really mingle with the other mothers in town, but has gravitated towards this woman Beth. Beth and Alice both have daughters around the same age, and they just have become inseparable. Beth starts noticing some peculiarities in her husband Nathan, and when she reaches out to her friend for help and guidance—she starts realizing fast that her friendship with Beth may been more challenging than she would've thought. I can't divulge anymore than this blurb—so go into this story as uninformed as possible.
First and foremost, I just have to say this—The First Mistake is a tad predictable and a little cheesy. THAT SAID, it's a fun domestic thriller, with impeccable writing. I found the dialogue between the characters very gripping, and each of the characters is strongly characterized. It's a strong second novel for Sandie Jones, and I think it will be another slam dunk for the author. It's a very quick read, so pour the pinot grigio, grab a beach chair, and enjoy! It's the perfect summer read, or lazy Sunday pick-me-up. Sandie Jones just knows exactly how to grab your attention, and you'll be battling your own demons while reading this book. Even though I said that The First Mistake is fairly predictable, what isn't predictable is the path that the author takes to get you where you need to go. You won't know who or what to believe as you hear each character show their story. Question everything —who do I root for? who do I hate? who is right and who is wrong?
The First Mistake will be released this June, and I already know it'll be Reese Witherspoon's next book club pick. I received an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review—thank you Minotaur Books!
I am again torn as to what to give this book for a review. This was such a fast, engrossing, and quick read! I was hanging on by the edge of my toes!! My goodness I couldn't turn those pages fast enough to figure out what was going on.
Although.... my detective skills definitely didn't steer me wrong on this one. I had some of the plot/twists figured out but just needed a bit of help for that final twist. But, unfortunately, the final reveal just left me a bit disappointed like her first novel did.
I will be honest... I feel like this plot continues to play out in psychological thrillers. I think it's really hard for this genre to take unexpected turns with something we haven't seen before. But, nonetheless Jones sure does know how to take you on one hell of a ride with her writing skills! WOW!
Overall, this was a fun and engaging novel! 3.5 stars!
I'd recommend picking up if you're wanting a fast and compulsive read.
Thank you to Netgalley and St. Martin's Press for the arc via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Let me start by saying that I was in the minority opinion, regarding the author’s debut novel...”The Other Woman”.
I didn’t find the relationships or dialogue in that novel realistic, AT ALL, so when this book became available as an ARC...I did not request it.
But, then I read a review from another reader who sat in the minority with me, and she convinced me that the author had “upped her game” with this one-AND it also became a Reese Witherspoon-“Hello Sunshine Book Club” pick-causing my curiosity to get the better of me, so upon its release....I got it!
I AM GLAD THAT I DID!!
Part 1 is narrated by Nathan’s WIFE, Alice
Part 2 is narrated by Alice’s BEST FRIEND, Beth
Part 3 is where you will find out if EITHER ONE of them can be trusted!
GULLIBLE: easily persuaded to believe something, credulous, trustful
There are a lot of gullible people in this novel...
My theories were ever changing, and while I got a lot of things right, I didnt guess it all correctly...and I remained engaged with this entertaining story the entire time, while I tried figuring it all out! 🕵🏻♀️
Next time there is an ARC available for a Sandie Jones novel, I WILL be requesting it and hoping my request to read it early, is granted! 🤞🏻
The First Mistake is a fast read--and that's because everyone and everything in it will be familiar if you've ever read a thriller. The best thing I can say about this is that as soon as you start this, you know exactly where Alice, Nathan, and Beth are headed.
But! Let's run through the checklist:
--Mc Alice being attractive and rich but still insecure enough to be "relatable"
--Mention of the "best friend" not having as much money or success or of a love life (all three!)
--Copious wine drinking
--Main male character is a gorgeous charmer whose charm lasts for about two chapters
--Big plot twist that is obvious
And if hitting every single tired note of that wasn't enough, about a third of the book is devoted to unnecessary and totally obvious backstory for Beth.
Overwrought and obvious, The First Mistake is a paint-by-numbers cookie cutter thriller that thinks it's much cleverer than it is. (And is it just me, or has this book been padded with extra spacing to make the page count higher?)
I loved The Other Woman by Sandie Jones, so I had a feeling going into The First Mistake that I would love it too, and I was right!
Not only does the beautiful cover draw you in, but the writing and suspense draws you in right away too. Alice is a working Mom to two girls, who we see with a thriving business and juggling her career and motherhood right away. As things progress into her story, we are left with the mystery behind the death of her first husband Tom, and the angst from her daughter, resulting in her getting in trouble at school.
This domestic psychological thriller had me in the very first chapter, already trying to unravel the clues and figure out where this story was taking me. I just know this is going to be a big hit!
From the moment I read the first page until the moment I read the last (3 times over!), The First Mistake held me captive. Real life ceased to exist as my heart rate picked up, my stomach got that funny kind of impending doom feeling, and I'm pretty sure I held my breath until this twisted story ended. And then, I sat there stunned - book in hand, staring at the final words . . . thinking "what the h*ll just happened"?! I'll say it right now . . . Carve out enough time to read this book beginning to end in one sitting because once you start, there's no going back.
Alice is a content, wealthy businesswoman, mother, and wife. Life is good . . . until suddenly it isn't. Nathan rode into Alice's life three months after she lost her first husband Tom. She'd been lost in the depths of her grief and despair, and he pulled her up out of the darkness into the light once again. No one need know she still depends on a couple of anti-depressants to get through her day. It's normal with all she's been through, right? Nathan is a charmer with a killer smile - a loving husband and father who works by Alice's side in the successful design firm she and Tom started. Alice, Nathan, and the two children are the picture perfect family. Rounding out Alice's inner circle is her best friend and confidante Beth. Their daughters are playmates and when Alice makes a couple of disturbing discoveries that give her cause to question her marriage, Beth is the one she turns to for advice. As this story plays out, dark revelations pile up, one after another, threatening to destroy life as Alice knows it. With her heart, gut, and the evidence pointing in different directions, Alice has to figure out who's telling the truth and who's lying. That's all I can say about the story without spoilers, and trust me folks, you do not want to read any spoilers before diving into this masterpiece of suspense.
A sinister yet mesmerizing story, The First Mistake is highly addictive - simply impossible to put down. I ignored the phone, doorbell, my husband, and even the dog as I frantically burned through the pages of this book. My "need to know" level was off the chart, and I can say it's one of very few books I've read lately where I wasn't even close to 100% certain of the outcome by the end. And oh that ending! How I wish I could talk about the shocking ending, but of course I can't. Some will love it and some won't, but I think it's brilliant! The author sets a menacing tone within the first few pages and then elevates it and the pace throughout as she masterfully manipulates characters and readers - withholding the final piece of the puzzle until the very end. Through strong, real-to-life characters, Jones delivers a relatable plotline that could mirror the life of any average citizen, making it that much more believable and terrifying. Beautifully written and delivered, The First Mistake is one I'll be thinking about for some time to come. An absolutely riveting "Are you kidding me?!" Must Read Suspense Thriller! *With many thanks to the publisher for an arc of this book! **Reviewed at Cross My Heart Reviews
Usually, I’m on the fence about reading books that generate a ton of buzz. I tend to go into those books with super high expectations only to be letdown in the end. This is not one of those books! The First Mistake deserves all the hype, praise and buzz it’s getting. It’s really good!
You really can’t trust any of the characters in this book. So many twists and turns - my head is spinning! That ending? Well, that was totally unexpected and I loved it!
This was my first experience with Sandie Jones and it won’t be the last. In fact, now I want to go back and read The Other Woman (which I passed on for some reason).
Thanks so much to NetGalley, St. Martin’s Press - Minotaur Books and Sandie Jones for my advanced copy to read and review.
Double lives? cheating husbands? money flowing perhaps in the wrong direction? twists, and surprises will greet the reader in THE FIRST MISTAKE.
We meet Nathan and Alice - in love and happy until odd things start to happen and Alice questions how happy they really are.
Alice had been married before to Tom, and Tom had died while on a skiing trip. Alice still loved Tom even though she was married to Nathan.
THE FIRST MISTAKE takes us on a roller coaster ride as Alice suffers with her mental problems, her doubts about her marriage, and her constant thoughts about Tom.
We follow Alice's days and how she confides in her friend Beth about everything.
Revelation after revelation continues throughout the book as we find out the characters are connected in ways none of them had any idea. A few of them actually are not who they say they are.
If you enjoy not knowing what is coming next, THE FIRST MISTAKE is the summer read for you.
A bit slow at first, but the suspense and surprising events are non-stop as you continue reading.
Master sleuths will love this book, but you may be stumped. 4/5
This book was given to me as an ARC by the publisher and BookishFirst in exchange for an honest review.
I’ve read several books by Sandie Jones and I can say she always takes things in a direction that I’m not expecting. Alice is working and raising two children. Her husband, Nathan travels a lot for business. Alice suffers from anxiety after the death of her first husband, Tom. When she suspects Nathan may be having an affair, she turns to a close friend for advice. And things get interesting from there!
I was anticipating many potential twists in how Beth might be involved when she said she and Alice had been friends forever and she’d never met Nathan. I was surprised by the connection with Tom. This book had some really twisted twists for sure and was a crazy ride all the way to the end. Really couldn’t trust anyone. Definitely not a lighthearted or pick-me-upper (very, very dark) but an interesting psychological read and quite the page turner with intriguing characters.
My first mistake was almost writing off this author for good.
The Blame Game was one of my least favorite books that I ever read and a leisurely browse around my local library inspired me to pick this one up. I’m so happy I did. If you LOVE domestic thrillers, pick this one up!
To be honest, I wasn’t expecting much as all the praise on the back cover of the book was for ‘The Other Woman.’ My instant thought was that this book might not be as good because it didn’t have the praise. I almost returned it then. I decided to check Goodreads and upon seeing favorable reviews decided to give it a go.
There were tons of twists and turns I wasn’t expecting and it just kept surprising me along the way!
I really loved that it was broken up into 3 parts. The first two being different perspectives and the last back to the MC. It made it so much easier to follow having whole parts dedicated to the narrator instead of trying to figure out whose chapter I’m reading.
It’s a typical domestic thriller but somehow unlike anything I’ve picked up before. Very cool and calculating and I can tell a lot of thought went into the backstory on this one.
I’m actually surprised this book didn’t get more hype as I just downright loved it. I mean this wholeheartedly: it surprised me in the very best way.
The first hour or so of this book had me wondering whether I had made a mistake. It just wasn’t catching my attention. My review of The Other Woman reminded me it took me awhile to become invested in that. So, I decided to stay with it.
But my concerns continued. I kept debating whether I should return this to audible. I found Alice to be a simpering mess who was irritating the hell out of me. Certain plot points seemed totally unbelievable. How much of a book are you allowed to listen to and still return? Well, I decided not to tempt fate and returned this. Life is too short.
Page turner on the way!! June 11th to be exact. There is so much going on in this book. When I thought I knew what will be next, another twist popped out. Good writing, very well-developed characters and big surprise on the end. I hope sandy Jones will write many more books because so far, she is doing great job.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for a free copy in exchange for an honest review.
Here is the nitty-gritty truth - The First Mistake by Sandie Jones is a solid book that I really enjoyed, but it didn't blow me away near as much as a lot of other readers.
What it's about: After Alice's husband Tom died, she was torn apart and left with a small child on her own. So she was ecstatic when, a short time later, she meets her current husband Nathan and falls in love. Now life is good again; she has 2 girls, a happy marriage, a beautiful home, and a thriving business. She also has a best friend named Beth whom she instantly connected with when she moved her daughter Millie to the same school as Alice's daughter Olivia. But when Nathan starts doing suspicious disappearing acts, Alice starts to wonder just how solid her marriage actually is. She turns to Beth for support, but just might find out more than she bargained for.
I wanted to be really vague in my summery because the synopsis to the book is vague, with very good reason. Saying too much would definitely spoil this one which of course I don't want to do. There are a lot of twists in The First Mistake, and while some people will figure them out, I was not one of those people. I just wish there had been a little bit MORE of a wow factor. I can't really pinpoint why I was slightly disappointed, but there was just something about the end that left me wanting more.
That being said, this was a gripping novel that had me devouring it as fast as I could. While it still took me 4 hours and 36 minutes that is pretty dang quick for me so that should say something. I haven't read her first book, The Other Woman, but I definitely want to, and I've heard it's amazing, even more amazing than The First Mistake.
As far as the characters go, Alice and Beth were a bit of a struggle for me at first, but by the end of the book I started to like Alice a lot more. At first it seems like this is going to be one of those books where the women don't stand up for themselves and go along with a man, but towards the end is full on girl power/women standing up for themselves which I absolutely loved.
Song/s the book brought to mind: 18 Wheeler by Pink
Final Thought: If you are looking for a quick, twisty read then I recommend reading The First Mistake. I know it didn't blow me away, but I am definitely still going to be recommending this to everyone since it's not boring, addictive, and most people will truly love it. I seem to be getting a little burnt out on thrillers lately (I haven't really loved anything lately except Some Choose Darkness), so take this with a grain of salt. Either way, I am for sure an instant Sandie Jones fan!

Alice lost her first husband in a sudden accident. She was devastated with the loss, but now has her life back on track. She's got a successful business, a charming second husband, two good kids, and a best friend. Alice also suffers from anxiety and irrational fears. When she starts to suspect everything is not as wonderful as it seems, she isn't sure who she can trust.
Alice is a successful woman in both her personal and professional lives. She has a lot going for her, but she also has some anxiety issues that hold her back. She enjoys her work, her family, and girl time with her bestie Beth. However, when she starts to look at things a little closer, she suspects her husband is up to something. She turns to Beth, but isn't sure she can be trusted. It seems everyone has secrets to hide.
The First Mistake is divided into three parts. The first and last are present day, but the second part is set in the past. The first part lays the foundation for Alice's story and where things are headed. The second part focuses on Beth's story. The third part brings everything together in a dramatic and thrilling way.
This made for a fantastic summer read. It was fast-paced and exciting, making the time fly by. Great for fans of domestic thrillers. Intense and suspenseful.

Trust is a funny thing; it takes such a long time to build, yet it's broken in a second.
Alice had a great life with her first husband Tom. They had a child and enough money to live a comfortable life. One day, Tom is in a tragic accident and life just isn't the same without Alice's perfect husband. Eventually, she meets Nathan and falls in love again. She has another child with Nathan and they are running a successful business. What could go wrong?
One day, Alice logs into social media and see's something odd - why it there a profile for her deceased husband, Tom? and why is the latest post timestamped as yesterday.... At the same time, her husband Nathan is acting suspicious and Alice wonders why he can't be as perfect as Tom once was. Or was he really that perfect she wonders? Alice hopes she can turn to her best friend Beth but even then secrets unravel and it feels like Alice's life is shattering before her...
I loved Sandie Jones THE OTHER WOMAN last year and I was really looking forward this one. This book is a very fast paced and easy read. I read it in a day and it has short chapters which really hook you. I wasn't totally surprised by all the of twists and turns - except for at the very end however, I also did not want to put it down as I wanted to know what would happen. Jones did a great job keeping us wondering until the very last few pages which made me really enjoy this story.
This is the perfect summer beach read. Jones books are always so entertaining and this one did not disappoint me! This one is out now so make sure to get it and put it in your beach bag.
Thank you to Minotaur books for my copy of this book!
The First Mistake is leaning heavily on others to get you through the day. Alice is finding that she's been served a heavy portion of woe-is-me and I-can't-make-it-through-the day without a bucket of red wine served in a jumbo tumbler. She's ten years out from the loss of her first husband, Tom, and she's on to a second marriage with Nathan. Tom still dances a tango in her head from the moment she wakes in the morning and until she crashes in bed at night. Move along, Girlie.
Alice and Tom had an interior design company and Alice has worked hard to make it a success. Enter Nathan. Nathan is kicking this business up a notch with a proposition for designing a multitude of apartments in a highrise in Japan. Alice, already self-stressed, is dragging her heels as to whether or not she wants to commit to such an international project from London. Our gal is having a hard time even handling getting her two daughters off to school in the morning. But Nathan assures her that he will do all the heavy lifting.
Enter Beth the best friend. Alice depends on her to help sort out her chaotic life. But now Alice suspects that Nathan may be cheating on her after she finds some suspicious charges on a receipt in his suitcase. Beth knows what that is like because of her deceitful ex. Is it the blind leading the blind here?
Let's get it out there. My Sherlock friends and I figured this one out early on. But this one is still an entertaining escape from our own daily lives (Red wine tumbler optional). I did enjoy The Other Woman by Sandie Jones far more. I just think I've had my fill of clueless women characters that have been ponied out as of late. Reality: Women can dance circles around the strong silent type....blindfolded and hands tied behind the back. A 3.5 kicked up to 4 stars. Will be checking out the next one by Sandie Jones.
I received a free e-copy of The First Mistake from Bookish First and Netgalley for my honest review.
A fast paced domestic thriller that you absolutely have to read! Sandie Jones is an amazing writer who pulls the reader in deeper and deeper leaving you with questions that must be answered. A book you can't put down.
Alice has an amazing life, despite the fact that she lost her first husband years ago. She has moved on and started a family with her amazingly perfect husband, Nathan. Alice also has one of the best friends (Beth) that a person could ever ask for.
When Nathan starts acting really strange, Alice confides in Beth. Soon, Alice discovers that her best friend might not have been the best choice to confide in.
I absolute loved how the story is told in three separate parts. Part one is told by Alice, part two is told by Beth, and part three is about both of their stories together.
4.5 Thrilling Stars rounded up!! Sandie Jones is my new favorite Thriller writer. I've read both of her books and both of them have impressed me. In this genre, that I read way too much of, it's hard to do that, and she continues to deliver!! The pacing, the plot, the ending, everything was on point in this one. It wasn't too long either, which I've come across with this type of read, every sentence felt like it had its purpose and I couldn't put this one down! The twists just kept coming and the ending left me screaming for more! I just can't believe I have to wait another year for the next book of hers to come out!! Anybody looking for an entertaining read should go out and get this one pronto!!
