5+ stars!

The first pages of this story are disturbing. They're intended to be. They provide a jumbled nightmare of disconnected images and pain that's difficult to interpret. As it happens, they perfectly capture what Fitzwilliam Darcy experiences when he's seriously injured.

This is a story limited to Darcy's point of view (just as Pride and Prejudice is limited to Elizabeth's). As he gradually awakens, he doesn't remember the string of events that led to his injuries, and he's bewildered to find himself in an unfamiliar, sparsely, simply furnished room, being nursed by none other than Elizabeth Bennet. He had left Hertfordshire with the Bingleys and Hursts the day after the Netherfield ball but had not been able to forget her in the succeeding weeks. At first, Darcy believes she must be a hallucination.

In addition to showing the reader how disoriented Darcy is as the story begins, Ms. Lewis does an admirable job of conveying his frustration when he realizes his injury has affected his throat. Trying to speak causes coughing, tremendous pain, and swelling, making it hard for him to breathe. Nodding or shaking his head is also unbearably painful. This leaves the only methods for Darcy to safely communicate as quill and ink, hand gestures, or mouthing words (and only Elizabeth seems able to interpret the latter). The proud Darcy, used to being in charge, is unable to do anything for himself and must rely completely on Elizabeth.

Their situation is exacerbated because help to the small inn where they're sheltered is unreachable for days due to unusually heavy snow. The other guests assume they're married.

Since he was already smitten, Elizabeth's dedication to his care makes Darcy even more in love with her. He assumes her ministrations must prove that she's equally affected by him.

The plot is way off-canon, and not all P&P characters turn up. However, it works just fine as an alternate path for these two characters. JAFF readers always love when Darcy and Elizabeth get a lot of page time together, and they certainly do here. Their characters are consistent with what we'd expect from Jane Austen's in this situation.

Jessie Lewis is such a talented storyteller, and this book is absolutely a tour de force. The writing is excellent, the plot well-executed, and the characters believable. What more could you ask?

I received an ARC with no promise of a review, favorable or otherwise.

Confined to a small inn, during inclement weather, Darcy and Lizzy are provided with an opportunity to speak,to listen,to undertake a character study and to learn of misunderstandings, miscommunications and mistakes of the past.

This is a simply wonderful tale that I heartily recommendation to all lovers of Austen.

I have to be honest and say even though I had been all anticipation of this book for weeks I almost didn't start it. I was worried I was still too Brittle and bruised to deal with Darcy near death, luckily I wasn't because this is a simply phenomenal P&P what if. It is completely spun for whole cloth so to speak creating an entire universe outside of P&P Canon.

Here we have a speechless or nearly speechless Darcy [How would you notice?? ;-) ] following an accident snowbound at an Inn in rural Hertfordshire being tended to by Miss Elizabeth Bennet. How? When? Why? All of these questions will be answered but not as quickly as one would hope.

And Darcy has a lot of thinking and pondering to do but it isn't annoying because he can't talk. And Lizzy is just amazing.
And this book makes me all warm inside because it is realistic and cute while dealing with serious and terrifying subjects.
I am so glad I read it.

What If Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Were Trapped in A Snowstorm and Mr. Darcy Was Injured?

In her second splendid Pride and Prejudice variation, Jessie Lewis brings Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth unexpectedly together in the middle of winter, confined to a crowded inn, and facing a harrowing series of events. Being forced into each others’ company is unpleasant enough for Darcy and Elizabeth, but this challenging situation is exacerbated by the the fact that Mr. Darcy is gravely injured and unable to use his voice! Does Elizabeth nursing Mr. Darcy back to health bring better understanding and amicability between these two? Or does Mr. Darcy’s inability to speak increase their proclivities to misunderstand each other and jump to the wrong conclusions?

Let me tell you friends…I adored this incredibly moving and emotionally-wrought tale. The premise was brilliant, dramatic, and plausible. And even though there are many stories that force or confine Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth together, I will always eagerly want more! It is such a fascinating situation/development to explore…especially when it happens early on in their relationship as it does here. But you need more than an excellent premise to make a story phenomenal, and Ms. Lewis’s masterful execution of this premise is what makes this story phenomenal!

The two elements about this Ms. Lewis’s writing that I most appreciated in this tale were her decision to tell the story from Mr. Darcy’s point-of-view and the perfectly paced romantic development between Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth. Being in Mr. Darcy’s head for this tale was intense…with Ms. Lewis’s exquisitely evocative prose I felt all Mr. Darcy’s mental, physical, and emotional pain. Jessie Lewis is an expert wordsmith; she continuously conveyed Mr. Darcy’s feelings and experiences in a sensitive and tangible way without ever resorting to repetition.

And now I must devote this next paragraph to how much I was completely enthralled by the leisurely-paced romance that was so beautifully developed by shades and degrees in this story. I loved that Ms. Lewis didn’t reveal everything right away or move along at quick pace. There is much for Mr. Darcy, Lizzy, and the reader to learn along the way and Ms. Lewis chose the perfect moments to peel away each layer. There were many revelations that surprised me just as much as they did Mr. Darcy.

Other aspects of this story that I thoroughly enjoyed was seeing Lizzy be so admirable, strong, and selfless, Mr. Bingley’s role in this story, and meeting the other inhabitants of The Dancing Bear. Not to mention, the conclusion to this story was completely heartwarming and gratifying.

Full of achingly real anguish and a keen understanding of emotions, Speechless is a mesmerizing and outstanding Pride and Prejudice variation that is deserving of the highest of praise. And as you can see from this review, Jessie Lewis’s beautiful prose and adept storytelling most certainly did not leave me speechless… 😉I challenge you to say differently!

Sorry, but no. This was terribly overwritten. You don't need to string together long tangles of dense vocabulary to write historical fiction well, or emulate Austen.

Review published at: https://frompemberleytomilton.wordpre...

Speechless was the first book I’ve read from Jesse Lewis and when I finished it I wondered why I had never read her previous book, Mistaken. Speechless is one of the best books I’ve ever read. The characters are enchanting, the story gripping, and the writing style irresistible!

The story opens with Mr. Darcy seriously wounded and trapped at a country inn with no one but Elizabeth to take care of him. As the narrative progresses, we learn that he was injured while trying to help Elizabeth who had had a carriage accident on her way to London. He is immediately taken to the nearest inn but with the level of snow still very high, they are trapped with the inn owner and few other guests, leaving Darcy’s care to Elizabeth alone. Because Mr. Darcy got injured helping her, and she is the only one who knows him at the inn, she feels compelled to help Mr. Darcy and everyone assumes they are married, a fact that Elizabeth does not contradict to secure her reputation.

As you can imagine a big part of the story will occur on a very confined environment and that, in my opinion, the first ingredient for a magnificent story. I’m partial for this type of premise, and when the author is naturally talented, the book comes to live and transports me right into it. That’s what happened with Speechless and I could not stop reading it!

Because of his injuries, Mr. Darcy cannot speak and needs to either murmur or write what he intends to say, but that does not prevent these characters from having witty and wonderful dialogues, on the contrary. They are forced to spend a lot of time together “talking” and getting to know one another, and this closeness will not only be physical but also emotional as their deepest feelings are shared and discussed. Of course they will have misunderstandings, and arguments, but that is part of the appeal of the book. The characters are exactly as they should be and as Jane Austen described them. They are merely placed under different circumstances, a fact that I absolutely loved. I recognized these characters from Pride and Prejudice and loved them even more! Elizabeth is a strong, courageous, kind, compassioned and selfless character who sacrifices her own comfort to nurse Mr. Darcy, and he is as charming as ever, despite the limitations he is suffering. Once he leaves the inn, he has the chance to come forward as the commanding and honorable man we know him to be, and the way he defended Elizabeth from his family was heartwarming.

During the time they are trapped at the inn Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy develop an intimacy that is compelling and when they finally leave that place, their intimacy will be crucial for some of the most romantic scenes I’ve ever seen. The proposal is adorable, romantic and very different from anything you’ve ever read for sure. Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth will become as one and will transport the reader into a magical place.

I loved the dialogues, the characters, their attitudes, their speeches, and the cozy feeling throughout the entire story. Even after Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth leave the inn, the cozy feeling remains because even if they were amongst a dozen different people, the reader still feels only the two of them exist. It’s almost as if their love and understanding of one another blocks everyone else outside of their private world. They share a bond that few understand and even fewer will ever experience.

This is a very short book that readers can read over a weekend and I highly recommend it to those who seek a well written, romantic and absorbing story. It is a page turner book that can hardly be forgotten by those who read it, and that will warm everyone’s hearts. If you haven’t read it yet, you’re missing a pearl. There aren’t many books with this quality out there, so this is definitely a MUST read.

I have read this a couple times and listened a few times to the audio too, but haven't reviewed it on this site yet. This is a very beloved story. I really felt the pain, danger, and panic that Darcy was going through. And I felt so thoroughly for Elizabeth as she did the best she could with almost no help or resources in order to help Mr. Darcy after his injury. His getting kicked in the throat by a horse has put him in such a frighteningly life and death situation. Taken to a nearby (thankfully) inn and recognized by Elizabeth and crying for help to get him there, Darcy is totally reliant on her since there's no one else. No apothecary. He's bleeding profusely from the gash to his neck. No way to stitch it up. No pain reliever. Just fresh clean bandages which she changed as often as she needed to. Their efforts to communicate with each other during this harrowing, exhausting week brings them to a better understanding of each other.

Of course, just as they were having their first 'moment' Darcy's cousin the Colonel shows up with reinforcements and Darcy wakes up in his Uncle's house. A multitude of family is arguing around him and vying for the privilege of 'caring' for him like he isn't even in the room. Every attempt at speaking for himself fails to such an extent that they all think he's out of his head and can't make his own decisions. This section was thankfully short but very very frustrating. Elizabeth had been discarded and further accused of being out for money and wanting to coerce Darcy into marrying her to prevent scandal.

Any more will really spoil a great plot. And there's so much more to discover reading this book. The new characters aren't so much met as referred to in all but two brief but meaningful ways.

Highly recommended.

2023- Audiobook for Speechless. Amazing story, great performance.
All from Darcy's POV, we see his suffering from a fairly serious wound and from being so vulnerable in front of Elizabeth.
They have plenty of time to fight and clear the air between them.

2022 - Breathless: short story accompanying Speechless
What happens to Elizabeth during the time Darcy is taken home following his severe injury and meeting up with him again.
How does she endure the separation and not knowing if he lives or died.

Excellent companion short story to Speechless (which is also an awesome read!)

“If you can sit in silence with a person for half an hour and yet be entirely comfortable, you and that person can be friends. If you cannot, friends you’ll never be and you need not waste time in trying.” –L.M. Montgomery, The Blue Castle

Darcy: “The higher man is distinguished from the lower by his fearlessness and his readiness to challenge misfortune.” –Friedrich Nietzsche, The Will to Power

This story was told completely from Darcy’s POV. We opened with him confused and in horrible pain. Something terrible had happened and he couldn’t seem to remember it. He was struggling to understand and make sense of what happened and where exactly he was. He was having trouble breathing, swallowing and was unable to speak. He opened his mouth and nothing would come out leaving him in excruciating pain. What on earth had happened and why was Miss Elizabeth Bennet taking care of him? Where were they exactly?

Elizabeth: “You’ve got to have someone who loves your body. Who doesn’t define you, but sees you. Who loves what he sees. Who you don’t have to struggle to be good enough for.” –Deb Caletti, The Secret Life of Prince Charming.

We don’t know Elizabeth’s thoughts only what Darcy can see, hear, and experience with her. We see their interactions through his eyes and his perception of what is going on. They have to learn to communicate in another form as he is unable to speak. He watches as she worries over his health and wellbeing. Slowly Darcy begins to see Elizabeth in a different light. In their spending time together, she is able to inform him of his actions, behavior, and misconceptions. He is able to clarify her misunderstandings on a few things as well.

Snowbound at a little inn: “It’s in those quiet little towns, at the edge of the world, that you will find the salt of the earth people who make you feel right at home.” –Aaron Lauritsen, 100 Days Drive: The Great North American Road Trip

What more can I say about the characters at the little inn where Darcy and Elizabeth were stranded? I loved those guys. We don’t meet them until way into the story.

This was a gripping story. If you have ever had a severe case of strep throat and laryngitis then you just might sympathize with Darcy’s pain. The D&E time was amazing as they struggled to communicate with each other through alternate means. I loved the slow reveal as to what had happened to them. We were totally in Darcy’s head and we didn’t learn things until he did. Then he had to backtrack and rethink situations after Elizabeth gave him a new perspective. He was so willing to listen and learn from his mistakes as well as Elizabeth did when she learned a few facts about situations herself. Talk about your study of characters. We also see a characterization of her family as well as his. That was really insightful. You don’t usually see them in that light. This was an amazing story. I know I keep saying that.

I volunteered to read an ARC from Quills & Quartos Publishing with no expectations of a review. The views expressed are my own.

Gripping Beginning
Oh my, the beginning pages of this book had me holding my breath. The descriptive narrative of what Darcy is experiencing after an accident captured me from the opening lines. The story, while not directly a first-person account, is primarily told from Darcy’s perspective—struggling to communicate after having lost his voice. Communicate—to Elizabeth of all people! He must suffer through both physical and emotional pain and suffering, not to mention the mortification of Elizabeth helping him take care of his personal needs. They eventually work through the issues that caused misunderstandings of their past. A very well written book, with excellent dialogue that is not actually “spoken” by Darcy for most of the story. Highly recommend. If you haven’t already done so, I also recommend reading this author’s previous work, “Mistaken”.

October 29, 2023 - Audiobook, second listen. (I forgot to add a review the first time.)
Narration by William Matthews is very good. There is a richness and depth to his voice, and his huskier voice for Darcy while he was healing at the end of the story was very appropriate.

The Written Words

Others will cover the plot, original from canon, picking up mid-winter, prior to the Hunsford visit. This book is all about character and the unforeseen opportunity to re-evaluate mistaken impressions, assumptions and hasty decisions. The writing draws in the reader from page one with a horrific, first person, descriptive of a terrifying accident. The interactions that follow convey every emotion. Only the moments of humor can compete with the ongoing expressions of pain. And the parlour scene of Darcy's supposedly high-born relations brings the social system of the Regency Ton into vivid hysterical relief. Wonderfully done.
Thank you Ms. Lewis and team. Is there another? Anxious anticipation awaits your next.

Companion to Speechless

This is a very short almost behind the scene story of Lizzy's realization of her feelings & response after she & Darcy leave the inn after his injuries.

Well written but damn, not something to read first thing in the morning. It made me cry in my coffee with her.

I adored this book. 5+ stars!

We read this from Fitzwilliam Darcy's point of view and it begins with him in agony, unable to breathe, gasping for breath, disoriented, unable to speak. We read on as he is nursed but as he also attempts futilely over and over again to regain his senses, to identify where he is, who is nursing him and what has happened to him. He is warned to stay prone, to sleep, to not attempt to turn his head, etc.

When Darcy finally gains a small part of consciousness he realizes it is Elizabeth Bennet who is nursing him. And that is indeed a puzzle. Small hints are given to him but as he cannot question her or anyone else he remains in a fog about his circumstances. Then there are other pieces to the puzzle. He finds he is snowed in at an Inn. The few people there have aided him in small ways, i.e., the loan of a shirt and the loan of ink, quill and paper...finally he has a way to communicate. But even in that he is thwarted...he cannot sit up, he is shaky and it is laborious trying to write out questions and statements even in a sparse manner.

He comes to realize that other inn residents think he and Elizabeth are married; they call her "Mrs. Darcy". He finds out that the snow continues and that the roads have not been cleared. He is told that he has a serious neck & head injury, that his condition was near death and that he still requires medical attention - which is unavailable. As time goes on this couple learn to read each other's body language and she learns to read his lips. They also find a way to communicate that is all their own. Darcy also comes to realize that Elizabeth has qualities which he has not before seen or recognize and she also comes to know him in much more depth. They spend days together so time is filled with personal information given back and forth. Oh, they don't always get along as he is a very impatient and disobedient patient at times and she is not only frustrated with him, but also by their plight and by trying to maintain some dignity while keeping necessary secrets. But should she just walk away and let someone else worry about and care for this injured man?

This story does not follow anywhere near the outline that canon presents. We do have Darcy with his disdain, his pride and both have totally misunderstood each other when they are together in Meryton. Events leading up to this are not Hunsford or the visit to Pemberley with the Gardiners. Don't expect to know any background until well into the story...that is part of the angst which drew me in. It's a mystery. Don't assume you know the story as to their relationship going in.

Rescue finally comes and then the couple go their separate ways. He continues to need medical care, rest and recovery. Darcy's family has all the wrong impressions as to why Elizabeth was taking care of Darcy and Darcy is frustrated that his family has not only blocked her family from any contacts with him but also refused to give them any information about him.

So after having come to treasure Elizabeth now his family is standing in the way and he is still without the ability to speak...he is SPEECHLESS.

I highly recommend this story. In fact I would say that this is a MUST Read!

Merged review:

A very short story as to Elizabeth's feelings while she awaits news on Darcy's condition due to his injuries which had rendered him Speechless. Bingley finally brings news and so, in addition to agreeing to take her to see Darcy, she is able to also prompt him to visit Jane. This must be read along with Speechless.

I recommend all of this author's stories.

Such a good book! I wonder why I hesitated so long.

Quick Summary; Darcy has an accident, I won't give you away how it happened or what happened exactly, needless to say he is on Death's door with only Miss Elizabeth as his 'nurse' and few other guests or staff from the Inn. Because of Darcy's accident he isn't able to speak, so how best to communicate with Elizabeth? Yes, with Paper, ink and pen. After a short while she comes to understand him with only reading his lips and it feels throughout the story like only Elizabeth has that ability. They still have some misunderstandings, which is normal in this circumstance but also quickly dashed away. After quite some time in close confinement with Elizabeth, they are broken apart by their families. ODC does find back together with a little help of a friend. I won't say more.
You should read. Really beautiful love story.

I do however have one point which bothered me a bit.. I listened to the Audiobook and i find that the narrator sounded almost the same for every character. He didn't do any other voices, almost everyone sounded like Darcy's POV narration. BUT, he did a good job with Darcy's coarse voice when Darcy did try to speak.

All in all I really loved it and it will definitely be not the last time I listened to it.

- Around 6 or 7 Hrs
- Clean (A kiss or 2 between betrothed couple)
- Middle Angst

I am hoping to like this more in the future but I found the story lacking in comparison to Mistaken by the same author. I really was looking forward to reading the book and was hoping for more complexity and humor but I didn't find it. Love the story idea. Wish it was less gross. The logic of choices made did not make sense to me but I can let that slide. It wasn't swoon-worthy to me. Maybe it will improve with time.

Reread: I liked this much better the second time around.

In Speechless the pages are almost exclusively oozing with both!
Intense, enrapturing dialogue and charmingly witty.
Synopsis:
“Come, Darcy. I must have you breathe. I hate to see you thrashing about in this stupid manner.”

Prepare to be plunged into the chaos of Mr Darcy's mind. He has been gravely injured and disoriented. description

Darcy, a man of few words as was, is now a man of none! SPEECHLESS
description

He knows not how but he is somehow stranded at an Inn and his ministering angel? Miss Elizabeth, the lady who haunts his dreams and who he had been struggling to forget. What a cruel twist of fate!
‘He was in a vast amount of pain, devilishly confused, prodigiously drunk, and very much enamoured of the woman responsible for most of these misfortunes.’
description

Darcy is again in danger of throwing caution to the wind and attaching himself to a pair of fine eyes, unsuitable connection and all
On a whim, he reached up and wiped the blood from her forehead with his shirt cuff. He pointed at her and mouthed, “Lovely.” Then he pointed at his injury and mouthed, “Not lovely.”
She pulled a sceptical face and pointed at him. “Drunk.”
description

Will he and Lizzy be able to clear up misunderstanding restricted as he is to quill and ink?
“I have no idea what you just said, but here—” She came forward, holding out the pen.
“I mended it for you. It seems only fair that you should have equal opportunity to express your displeasure.”
description

Lizzy will make Darcy aware of his shortcomings in character
“You would condemn her because she was not animated enough?” Elizabeth cried. “When you have just vilified the rest of my family for being too demonstrative?”
description

Darcy will also challenge Lizzy on her own blindspots;
“You take great delight in questioning my judgment. Are you confident your own is always sound?”

description

Lizzy is utterly charming, compassionate and funny;
“Now, to avoid the necessity for any more answers of any sort, I intend to spoon this brandy into you until you stop glowering at me.” She held the bottle up to the window and squinted at it. “I do hope we have enough.”
description

What I Enjoyed:
-Exclusive, immersive & disorienting Darcy POV
-Image rich descriptive writing
-Darcy excited over indirect kiss with water, cute!
ODC rich dialogue and almost exclusively their interaction, facets of their persona explored
“My family might embarrass me from time to time, but no more than it clearly embarrassed Mr Bingley when his sisters were hateful to their houseguests, or when his brother was a glutton at dinner, or when his friend refused to speak to anyone in the neighbourhood because he was too proud to overlook their follies.”
description

“Did you overlook Mr Collins's follies when you attempted to persuade your friend not to marry him?
description

“I did—that is, I did not, but…” She seemed genuinely anguished by the objection but still shook her head in contradiction. “It is not the same! Mr Collins did not love Charlotte—and Charlotte most certainly did not love him!”

The best rehashing of Wickham, due in thanks to Darcy's need to write efficiently;
Now he had only to find the words—and write them, with a hand that could scarcely hold a pen. "My father was Wickham's godfather. Supported him at school and Cambridge. Highest opinion of him. Favourite”
So relieved when the old tale is succinctly summarized, bless!

What Displeased Me:
Can't believe Darcy thought Caroline wasn't all bad cause she puts on airs, he seemed like a dumbass for that statement to me
description
I've never been of the mind that discerning Darcy would considered his sweet naive sister fit to marry Bingley; he knows (or I guess considering the previous comment he might not) that the Bingley sisters are manipulative witches.
Georgie would have been used as a pawn for their whims in society climbing, how could he want to ally himself and his sister to them? Preposterous!

Verdict:
It is insightful. I feel like it verbalized many aspects about Lizzy and Darcy as characters that I hadn’t the words myself to do. I enjoyed it for that above all, it brought me close to Austen’s work and allowed me to appreciate them all the more.

It was an ambitious endeavor; many authors rely on summary, several characters and secondary story lines as a crutch to avoid too many ODC one on one dialogue scenes. Ms Lewis did not shrink away from the challenge, we stay in Darcy’s head with Lizzy almost exclusively.
They are hard to write; Lizzy is witty and Darcy is also but in a more subdued manner, this was reflected in the story expertly. Ms Lewis has all my respect for creating this intense island of exposition and coming up with such original but plausible conversations that led to these revelations of each other.

However I must say, although it is perfect for what it sets out to accomplish, it’s not among my favorite JAFFs and I fault that down to my own taste for entertainment. I enjoyed it and couldn't put it down, but with one limited setting and only in Darcy’s head, I would not likely venture a reread.
It’s a different tone than what I expected after Mistaken, one of my all time favorite JAFF’s, so the comparison is unfair not to mention impossible since they are markedly different in tone and objective. I applaud MsJessie Lewis diversifying and thinking outside the box, this is a very unique JAFF.
description

I measure the quality of a JAFF by three factors, as follows;

1. Did I feel the characters acted true to Austen's character framework (allowing for changed circumstance and scenario to offer some leeway)?
Yes
2. Was I engaged during the reading and not bored?Yes
3. Was the writing compelling/ intelligent and was there sufficient interaction/dialogue between the main characters? Boy was there! Chock full!

Different and enjoyable

An interesting journey, literally, where Darcy and Elizabeth get to know each other under extreme conditions, having to device the means to communicate. Entertaining and intriguing.

I just loved this book sooooo much!! It starts with a really difficult and worrying scenario. Darcy is gravely injured and has somehow ended up in an inn being cared for by Elizabeth Bennet! His accident has left him unable to speak so Elizabeth quickly learns to lip read and longer discussions are had via written notes.

We spend the majority of the book with just the two of them. The story is told from Darcy's point of view and I just adored seeing him come to know and appreciate Elizabeth.... and then having the wind talked out his sails when some misunderstandings and the ensuing squabbles occur!!

This story happens at the point in the timeline where Darcy and Bingley have left Netherfield after the ball.

Given the severity of Darcy's injury I was worried this might be a heavy read - but no... while there is seriousness and angst, it is quickly overcome and there is lots of fun to be had as Elizabeth is the only one who can read Darcy's lips when he is trying to speak.... her paraphrasing and editing his responses his hilarious - especially in the scenes with his family at the end.

The conclusion of this book is just perfect. I had the stupid grin on my face the whole time.... this is a book not to missed. And if you haven't read Mistaken by the same author - you need to. That is probably most favourite book of this genre but now has another favourite to go alongside it. Speechless is a really different take on our favourite novel that is just brilliant!

Speechless is a beautifully written, original P&P variation that kept me turning the pages long into the night, bleary-eyed but unable to put it down -- I finished it in one sitting. The unusual twist to canon events offers Darcy and Elizabeth plenty of time to spend alone together and get to know each other -- always a big plus. A light, rewarding read, the story moves on at a perfect pace and finishes just when it should, not a dull moment in sight. I highly recommend it!

A really lovely story and so moving at times, esp when Darcy learns of the sacrifices that Elizabeth endured in order to care for him whilst they were trapped at the inn. I truly had a lump in my throat.

I won’t necessarily summarize the story as others have done a good job already. But this is a ver satisfying read and would not mind rereading again in the future.

Good story

I liked the love story, but the fitzwilliams were pretty bad and lady Catherine too rude! Liked the ending and would have liked to have an epilogue!

Finding ways to communicate

4.5* rounded up.

This is a favourite tale of mine. Ms. Lewis writes with a distinct flair that enveloped me and drew me into the confines of Darcy's inn chambers with the protagonists. This is an engrossing story that I read through, even after several re-reads, and I find myself emotionally affected when I reach the end. The audiobook, narrated by William Matthews, is also excellent.
