One moment lovely Prudence Walker was living the life of a dutiful orphan; the next she was lying in a highwayman's arms. Wounded in a foiled robbery attempt and thoroughly drenched from a storm, the dreaded Scot bandit seemed harmless enough. Or so Prudence thought—until the infamous rogue stole her breath and her will with his honeyed kisses, until she felt the rapier-sharp edge of his sensuous charm.
Who haunted a highwayman's dreams...
She was everything Sebastian Kerr had ever wanted, but could never have: an impish beauty with amethyst eyes and wine-sweet lips he longed to plunder. But even as he drew Prudence into his embrace, he knew he must leave her. For the gray-eyed highwayman was leading a dangerous double life—one that left no room for love.
In a land of heather and velvet...
The courageous beauty and her sensuous outlaw ignite fires of passion that blaze from the storm-swept English countryside to the wild moors of Scotland...forging unbreakable bonds of love.

I will spoil the 11% I read, and I warn you, it's a doozy
1) The hero (H) and heroine (HE) meet during a botched highway robbery, and despite a broken ankle (!) H attempts to seduce HE when they are forced to take shelter in a hut- and he takes waaaay to many liberties, so I was not particularly impressed 2) Some time after their "meet-cute", and they never found out who each other were, the HE gets introduced to her aunt's new fiancée who is coming to stay at the house they share - and yes you guessed it, it's H - and not only has he slept with this aunt 3) but it's HEAVILY implied he sleeps with the aunt in the same house as the HE, after he is shocked to see that the girl he can't stop thinking about is his fiancée's niece
The first out-and-out romance novel I ever read, I picked it up for 50c in the library cast-offs bin, and luckily it didn't have this cover shown on it or I'd have been too embarrassed to buy it.
Well, what a ride! If only all romance novels were at least this good. It is an unlikely tale, faintly ridiculous in parts and terribly ridiculous in others, but in a way that had me laughing out loud an only occasionally moaning with pain. There are some super-hot scenes in this book as well as toe-curlingly embarrassing ones, and it rips along at a fair pace, never letting the action stagnate in one setting too long. The relationship is dynamic too, as well as the roles they play, as the actions and circumstances of the characters mess up their lives.
SPOILERS:
Prudence is pretty trope - the sexy librarian basically, but in a baroque gown. She is a strong willed girl who finds herself forced on the mercy of a relative, but of course she isn't that strong willed or there would be no story. Sebastian is motivated by pride, and for most of the novel that means he'll do anything to get his hands on more money. Take all chance of monetary gain out of a situation and he's got a soft heart after all, and that's Prudence's first impression of him. He's got damaged-bad-boy syndrome, thinking he's no good and deciding that he has no heart to betray and no morals to upkeep, so he acts like an arse for most of the book. Prudence of course, through circumstances beyond her control (except for when she can't resist a bit of shit-stirring with Sebastian), sticks close enough to him throughout the book, that she eventually gets to the well of pain at the bottom of his tortured soul, Lucky for her and us, because otherwise she has no justification for sticking around a guy who otherwise comes off as a shallow, mercenary bully. I like how Pru is cleverer than he is, but sometimes he just is QUITE dense.
The ending is silly, and the historical grounding feels weak, but that is not why one reads such books.
My review contains spoilers and they're mostly my thoughts as I went with the book. This one's got 5 parts.
This book drove me insane. I really really enjoyed butchering the hero; the fact that he was half Scot and I'm a sucker for all things Scottish/Highlander didn't matter. He deserved all that and more, was such a jacka$$ for the better part of the story. Anyway, it was fun in a weird way! :/
Hmm, what do you do when you rescue a highwayman in a stormy night, spend the night with him and help him? You let him kiss you senseless and touch you just a bit! Then when you live your days sighing and pining for that aforementioned very very good looking highwayman, you find out he is the current lover and now fiance of your whore of a aunt (not a distant relative but your own and someone who doesn't treat you very well, who is a money eating harpy and married a hundred times over!), you treat him well and let him become your friend of course!
Friend??
Awkward, awkward and so ewwwwwww!!!!
God I don't even know what to think. I so wanted to like this one, I'm feeling kinda downside. Poor Prudence! Why oh why girl? Ignore him PLZ!!! Really, what's the point?
I wanted to like Sebastian but I don't know now. I'm on the 9th chp, I knw it's too soon to tell but what is this? I mean I can't take it. First that Devony woman (like thousand others before her), a one night stand (Prudence, she lives near you, how can you stand him or her or your aunt knowing it all??), then his confusion over Prudence while he's screwing her aunt. YUK!! Sorry, I'm kinda pissed off here.
The starting was interesting enough. I thought he'll find her out later on and meet in secret, fall head over hills in love and then ... well, maybe I'm too cliched! The moment I found out that he's thinking of marrying the aunt I went, whaaaaaaaaat?? Then I thought maybe he has some ulterior reasons to woo her, maybe political while he's still into Prudence ... Of course not!!! And then, to know he fantasizes her even though he is marrying the aunt (who is probably thousand years older than him!) for fairly mercenary reasons is just too much! Why can't Prudence just ignore the lout for crying out loud?!?
I thought I'm going to have a pure Scottish hero here but he's part French. I have no issue about that but I just hope I start liking it ... I really do. I love the name Sebastian and I hope he lives up to my standards (however cliched they are!!!) ****************
They all need to go a mental asylum, specially Sebastian, Tricia (the aunt) and Devony ... Prudence needs to be brained with something.
Well, I've lost words here, just skipping through the pages. I'm sad at the demise of a good plot! It could've been, the way it started out. Lord, I even can't stand most of the characters.
What would you do with a hero who thinks his honor and father's castle is so important that even though he realizes he loves the heroine, he offers her (however discreetly) to become his mistress and going on with the plan to marry the aunt? I don't see it as a 'sacrifice', I find it disgusting. I even find it offensive that he is thinking of screwing the aunt and the niece ... well, it's disgusting!!!! Doesn't really show that he cares enough for the heroine (let alone love her), does it?
Oh, Prudence ... I wish you were scared of him not only because you thought he wants to kill you but for something else entirely. Ugh, who am I kidding here?!
The aunt and that Devony are such annoying characters, I wanna slap them every time they open their mouths. And yah, there were times I saw Sebastian suffering and realizing what a mess he has gotten into, I was jumping up and down with glee! Ahemm, not really jumping but close enough. I've never experienced such genuine fun to see a hero suffer thus. *evil grin* ********************
I'm going insane here, trust me or is it just those characters?
Just before part 2 things got pretty interesting, bravo Pru! He deserved what you did to him after his abominable behavior ... I don't even want to discuss the scene that comes with the line 'this changes nothing'! Then through a lot of screaming, shouting, whining, surprises, pity, most of all a lot of anger now it's becoming weird again. What I find most weird is their nonchalance about certain situations (Pru's about Sebastian and the aunt+Devony, about Sebastian in particular and Sebastian's about things he's been doing, so on and so forth), whereas I feel like slapping, braining or kicking something/someone!
And, really, after everything, this is how the first love scene happened? Argggghhhh! Sebastian's sporadic bursts of love is just not my cup of tea. Poor Pru! He isn't worth all these troubles she is finding herself in.
There were two things that did help me not dislike Sebastian entirely, a few scenes with confessions (kind of), acknowledging what a jerk he is (yah, guess that takes a lot of courage or shows the lack of brain!) and his obsession with Pru's hair (among other things, that is).
Other than that, I was hooked for about 5 chaps, now I'm floating through the pages again. :/
PS: I still jump in glee every time I find ... oh well, you know what I mean! :p ****************
Hmm, well, things got interesting again after they married (yes people, Pru and Seb) and now that they are in Dunkirk, Seb's 'castle', I thought maybe I'd start liking Seb and, maybe he'll redeem himself *sigh* ... But NO, think I asked too much of him. Crazy lout! I'm not yet done and I feel like slapping (actually spank :p) Seb hard again but for some of those really amazing scenes with Pru. Don't know. I wish he stayed like that and not act as a moron (again). Arghh!
Pru, I'll be there with you, cheering aloud when you decide to kick his bon-bon off, trust me!!!
Sebastian, you'll never be St. Vincent but you could've been something for me. I love your 'sexiness' but hate you as much for being an a$$!!
Yes people, I'm a drama queen ... Thank you. ****************
Ok, finished it. The ending was quite better than what I hoped for. I was looking forward to the scene where they all come together and find out how Seb's whore aka Pru's aunt takes it ... Hmm, it was kinda funny! I actually laughed despite of the fact that I had no idea what to expect. So, for the ending and for a few other things I loved about the book, I've given it a 3.5 whereas I was confused between 2 and 3 before.
I just wish things went differently ... well, never mind about that!

Liked the story and especially how the author wrote the H - a true underdog who's nothing like the rich/powerful alphas that we read about in so many romances; and yet you can't help but feel your heart going out to him. The h too was quite likeable and together they made a a good couple in an emotionally charged romance novel.
It’s quite a ridiculous story really, not very well-plotted in my humble opinion. I have read much better HRs. But it’s light reading with a voice that I don’t seem to mind. I am mildly entertained, hence the 3 stars.
Author: Teresa Medeiros First published: 1991 Length: 372 pages, 5426 kindle locations Setting: Scottish Highlands and Northumberland, 1792 Sex: Not frequent. Reasonably explicit. Heroine: Poor orphaned daughter of an inventor who blew himself up. Bespectacled, intelligent, unloved. Hero: Son of a brutish Highland Laird. Poor, resorting to highway robbery to fill his coffers. Includes: Excerpt from A Whisper of Roses. Series: Book 2 of 5 (can be read in any order)
A modern bodice ripper, Medeiros takes the poor heroine through a roller-coaster. Not good enough for him, abducted, cast away, sex in anger, shot at, blown up. It just goes on and on.
Not a bad story but geez it just kept coming at you.
In the end, I didn't much like Sebastian. And there were plenty of times when Prudence really should have just cut her losses and moved on. Apparently Love turns you into an idiot.
But, if you look at it as a Bodice Ripper, it works.
This is my fith Teresa Medeiros novel and I wasn't disappointed!! I just finished reading it and I'm still sitting here with a silly grin on my face. This was a definete page turner! I just had to know what was going to happen next. The action never once stopped and never once was I bored or tempted to skim pages.
I absolutely loved the way Prudence slowly evolved from the prim and proper "spinster" who had been neglected and walked over all her life to the strong, beautiful woman she had been meant to be. She blossomed so beautifully throughout the book.
But what struck me the most was how Sebastian saw the beauty she hid underneath the tight chignon and the heavy spectacles. He knew almost immediately that she was the one meant for him and she and only she could invoke the magical and deeply stirring effect on him that love and only true love can create.
I came to believe that they were soul mates and I loved that no matter what happened to them, they were always inexplicably drawn back to each other. They fought to overcome the odds and it was breathtaking to watch... because I felt as though I there beside Jamie watching it all unfold.
I loved the secondary characters. They filled me full of tenderness or made me laugh out loud. And in the end I truly cared about them almost as much as Prudence and Sebastian. Of course there were a couple of characters that I despised... but it was fun to hate them. The story was filled with laugh-out loud humour. I was touched and moved by this book...
I cannot wait to read another one!! I am so glad I found this author! She is amazing.
Teresa Medeiros has a very specific wry sense of humor that her characters wear well. I'm starting to see a pattern, (I've read 3.5 of her books now) but I don't mind it because it works and it's her unique style. I think one of my now favorite quotes is a perfect example of the signature humor that is Teresa Medeiros:
"I've never been ravished before. I shant be any good at it." "There's really nothing to it. You just yell and thrash about. I'll do the rest."
Man oh man. I am a sucker for a bad boy hero with a knowing smirk. And Teresa knows how to write one. This book was delightful. It was what I needed when I read it. It did lag a bit about half way through for a short time, but (aside from that) I was very surprised that while it was longer than I'm used to, it was filled with well paced action.
Speaking of action. The sex scenes are written passionately and poetically instead of just throbbing this and engorged that. While there is a fair bit of throbbing and engorging, she manages to use those words how they were supposed to be used instead of just to be kinky.
Also, has anyone noticed that this book has FABIO on the cover?!?! While Fabio isn't who I had in my head as Sebastian while I was reading this, I still think it's hilarious and awesome-sauce that Fabio graces the cover. Heh heh. For some reason I can't stop thinking of Zoolander when Fabio accepts his "Model/Actor award. And not the other way around". But I digest...
This book was good. If you like a more traditional romance novel with masked highwaymen who ravish wild eyed beauties mixed with clever whit and a respectable dose of action, try this one out. It won't disappoint.
SHE WAS AN INNOCENT LASS... One moment lovely Prudence Walker was living the life of a dutiful orphan; the next she was lying in a highwayman's arms. Wounded in a foiled robbery attempt and thoroughly drenched from a storm, the dreaded Scot bandit seemed harmless enough. Or so Prudence thought--until the infamous rogue stole her breath and her will with his honeyed kisses, until she felt the rapier-sharp edge of his sensuous charm.
For the gray-eyed highwayman was leading a dangerous double life, one that left no room for love.
IN A LAND OF HEATHER AND VELVET The courageous beauty and her sensuous outlaw ignite fires of passion that blaze from the storm-swept English countryside to the wild moors of Scotland...forging unbreakable bonds of love.
I'm okay with the story.. It's just really long.. Or it feels that way, which is never a good thing... I think there was just way too many cliches/misunderstandings happening at once in part one that I'm dreading what will happen in part two so imma put it on hold for now... Typical Medeiros humor tho so that was basically what saved it for me so far...
4-4.5 stars. So if anyone read my last review, I've been in an HR funk. Nothing is holding my attention and summer might be partly to blame. I just miss being obsessed with a book, a can't put it down, can't sleep, can't get it off my mind type of book. So I picked up a Medeiros because I'm guaranteed to like if not love it. Now, while I wasn't blown away, I enjoyed it very much. TM always takes me on a journey, which is why I love her. It's not that her books are unpredictable, but they always take me for a ride and I never know which way she will go. This one was really fun and high on my list of favorite TM books.
A few issues keeping it from being a 5 star:
I wasn't fully invested in the story. Like I mentioned above maybe it's because it's summer and maybe because I'm a little burnt out on HR.
I loved Sebastian and Prudence, the main issue with them is their lack of communication. That can definitely be a driving force of many HR, but this was a little too much. At least in other HR, it all comes to a head, but I feel like the H/h wouldn't tell each other things, they would get mad, and then there would be no resolution. I get that things don't need to be spelled out in black and white, but this stuff would just disappear and not be brought up again.
I know I just said I loved Sebastian, but he did have his issues throughout the book. I didn't really mind them, but at the end, I really needed more groveling from him. He was kind of a jerk and I never felt like he made it up to Prudence. He never really expressed his feelings for her like she truly deserved.
The ending is typical Medeiros. It was rushed and a little OTT. Just kind of silly how everyone just shows up after the explosion. And then bing bang boom it's done and no epilogue.
Overall a good read and I will read it again. I'm still in my funk and thinking of mixing things up with a mystery or something. But any recommendations greatly appreciated!

This book is one of the reasons I became a romance reader and aspiring romance writer. I found this copy, with this cover, while visiting my sister in San Francisco years ago. And fell in love. Sebastian is the perfect balance of bravado, charisma, sensitivity, raw masculinity and scandal. His first encounter with Prudence is still as vivid in my memory now as it was the first time I read it. He made my then young and rather naive self grow red cheeked and weak in the knees! And I loved Prudence! She is funny and smart. From her squinty lavender eyes and her dogged devotion to Sebastian cat to her atrocious attempts at cooking and effective attempts at seduction - she's a heroine the reader can love. I think that's what was so rewarding about this book. The characters were all delightul. Whether is was Tiny or Jamie or Aunt Tricia or Devony or Sebastian's highland bandits - they were all vivdly written and entertaining. Medeiros, of whom I am a HUGE fan, is able to paint rich backdrops and fill them with such delightful stories. From the titillating boudoir scenes to madcap courtroom dramas - she's a master craftsman. Though I've read it many times over, as well as hundreds of romances since then, I still adore this book! Bravo and thank you Teresa. You Rock!
I wasn't really sure how to rate this book. I loved Sebastian. I always seem to love a hero named Sebastian. I loved the chemistry between Sebastian and Prudence. I just found that the story jumped around a bit and I never really knew what Sebastian's real feelings were. They would seem to come together and then in the next few pages were apart again. In saying that if you enjoy Teresa Medeiros' other novels then this one is worth reading. It might be one of those books that if I read it again in another month or two it will all fall into place.
I can't quite figure out how I feel about this book.
On the one hand it's quite good fun, with a plot that takes approximately ten thousand detours. It's all over the place and melodramatic, but that's partly why it's such good fun. Although I'm not sure it was intending to be seen that way.
On the other hand though, there were more than a few times I rolled my eyes. Seriously, the relationship between Prudence and Sebastian was so back and forth I had whiplash by the end.
Mostly though I did enjoy it. And it was certainly an adventure!
Spent a couple of days being unable to pick up my iPad and read because of my mental turmoil over this book.
I got to the point where H is at Prudences aunts house as her aunts 'fiancé' and I'm thinking... Ewwww that's close to home ... Surely they haven't slept together ... YEP yes they have! H sleeping with a family member of h is , I have finally decided, crossing a line. Therefore DNF but reluctantly as I love the author.

Count on Medeiros to engage your every sense and sensibility. The story is appealing, the characters delightful. They'll make you laugh and cry. You'll be happy for them, angry at their stubborness, sentimental knowing their trials, and reduced too a puddle of fish at their passion.
Overall this was another fun story by Medeiros which I really enjoyed. The protagonists at least were interesting and three dimensional without being too complicated to fit into the lighthearted subject matter.
I only wish that Prudence’s character were more consistent. The book keeps trying to reinforce how smart she apparently is, by having her read advanced theoretical chemistry and mathematics books— even name-dropping the one and only Sir Isaac Newton. She’s intelligent, well-read, practical, unassuming and hardworking; which is illustrated through her mentions of book-keeping for the family accounts and performing her own chemistry experiments at home in order to complete her father’s research.
At the same, however, she’s apparently too dense to realize that when a dangerous criminal says “if you see my face, either me or my men will have to kill you” means that she should a) not look at his face and b) stay the hell away from him for the rest of time.
Medeiros also wants us to believe that this girl who somehow knows her way around a chemical laboratory and regularly tinkers with explosives can’t figure out which ratio of baking soda and flour will result in an edible substance. I’m sorry, but that’s just an incredibly lazy trope— women don’t have to be either smart OR creative.. it is entitle possible to be and do both, and in the context of this particular character it simply makes no sense.
Then of course once our brilliant heroine gets a reality check about her murderous beau, she decides that the best way to prevent him from killing her in cold blood would be to alienate and anger him! Because every woman knows that when you’re dealing with an unstable man, the first option that pops into mind is how to completely piss him off! Genius!
Also, I understand that the irritating Aunt Tricia is meant to be a spoiled, manipulative airhead type, but did we really have to go into detail about how old she looks in natural light? And how annoying it is when she shows affection towards her **fiancé**? And how much of a dirty sloooot she is for wanting to educate her young niece about “the birds and the bees”without judgement?? I mean, come ON! She takes this girl in to live a life of luxury and complete freedom to gallivant through the woods with sexy highwaymen, and she gets nothing but contempt because she dares to have her own life?

I BLAME MYSELF FOR SKIMMING CERTAIN PARTS BECAUSE SOMETIMES I GET CONFUSED WITH WHATS HAPPENING. BUT THIS WAS QUITE INTERESTING IF NOT A LITTLE HEART BREAKING.
OUR HERO is an Irish bastard and has suffered poverty since forever. He vows to take back his father's castle even if he had to crawl through hell. That is his drive in this story which causes him to almost lose the heroine later. When an enchanting and fearless woman rescues him and spends the night in his broken down cottage, he's immediately taken with her but the life of a highwayman leaves no room for love. The next time they meet, he's engaged to her aunt! And boy was the taboo relationship he had with Prudence bittersweet and slightly ANGSTY! I deem this hero HARDLY HONORABLE because he will go through with the marriage for money but set Prudence up for adultery. Not cool man. I get that he has problems with his grandfather and that caused him to never dare to reach out for Prudence in earnest except for stolen kisses and moments.
OUR HEROINE is actually a enchantingly beautiful woman who has been repressed by a jealous aunt and with those glasses hindering her beauty, she withdraws into herself yet I found her to refreshingly inhibited. I mean who goes wondering the woods, stumbles upon a wounded highwayman and rescues him, then allows him liberties and sleeps in his arms? (not fucking btw) When reality return and she is forced to leave him, she goes turns back into the plain, frumpy spinster. She's knocked off her feet when she discovers that her aunt's new fiancé is none other than her highwayman. It was obvious that she and Sebastian had great chemistry but he was determined to marry for money and discard her love. Angry, she takes matters into her own hands and ruined the engagement by betraying him. A few months later she's bestowed the title Duchess and will eventually meet our hero again in his destitute circumstance that leads them to a forced marriage.
OVERALL while I did enjoy this story, sometimes I wanted to knock some sense into the hero. Despite his grandfather's hold over him, I just feel like the whole time he was the only obstacle in his love for Prudence.

Just finished reading Heather and Velvet (1992) by Teresa Medeiros. The heroine, Prudence rescues the bad boy Scottish highwayman, Sebastian after he’s injured during a robbery in the wilds of a dark and stormy night in Northumbria. She’s sharp, clever and squints when not wearing her spectacles. He’s devastatingly handsome, ambitious to regain his heritage and only out for himself. They both deeply hurt each other emotionally throughout the beautifully written story. This is also a rollicking adventure, funny at times with a delightful cast of other characters, including her cat Sebastian. The story is crazy with many last minute twists and turns .. full of vivid descriptions, heartbreaking moments, and sensual love scenes. Yes, that’s Fabio on the cover.

Long before I started book blogging--I read and loved Teresa Medeiros' novels!! I think I have read most of them-and reviewed 5 or 6 on my blog. She makes the characters come alive, even the minor characters, and no matter what there is always a comical touch to them. If you enjoy Historical Romance you are sure to love this one. It starts out as a kind of Cinderella story-but not really and what has to happen to get Sebastian (the man-not the cat)and Prudence together--well you will have to read it to find out!!
