Welcome to NOLA, home of festivals, magic, and… zombies.
Calliope LeBlanc is not about to allow zombies to take over her beloved New Orleans. A talisman seems to be the perfect answer, especially when it turns her into a sorcerer.
But her attempt to defeat zombies backfires, and she accidentally creates “super” zombies instead.
But that’s not her only issue. Four fairies arrive in NOLA, determined to kill her and clean up her mess. Four extremely hot fairies. Four fairies she needs to convince she can help them save the day and her city.
Voodoo Sector is a reverse harem that blends action, danger, and passion. Perfect for readers who love strong heroines, powerful heroes, and whychoose romance.
This one was not for me at all its essentially a slow burn reverse harem set in the city of Nola during the year 2099 where the world has gone to crap and is overrun with Zombies. The story is told completely from Calliope POV after she finds a mysterious magical talisman in the city and trying to kill some zombies manages to transform them into super ones. When she arrives home, there are four Fae males in her house who have been tasked with taking her out and cleaning up her mess. The four Fae Valoras, Garlan, Barian and Talen instead of killing her take her under their wing and decide work with her to rid the city of its current infestation. So, the storyline here was imaginative but the actual execution of it didn’t work for me, I found myself bored and skimming a lot. I unfortunately, didn’t feel any emotional connection to the characters here and the Fae males all morphed into one with no one standing out from the crowd. I thought the reverse harem part of this was also carried out poorly with all the jealousy and such and there was absolutely no building anticipation or chemistry and the characters themselves felt so juvenile. Events themselves were wrapped up super conveniently with little conflict and lacking any sort of depth. Finally, that consummation scene, just no it was so awfully cringy, mechanical and so unromantic. I can only describe it as a conveyor belt of consummation I was inwardly dying inside no ones first time should be like that. I really wish I could have liked this much more than I did but this one was just not for me folks. The ideas were relatively sound it was just the execution of them that let this down. I voluntary reviewed a copy of Voodoo Sector.
*I received a free copy of this book which I voluntarily chose to write an honest review for.
Okay I am so getting into this world this group of authors have created even if each one reads separately. This time we are in New Orleans the voodoo capital following Calliope as she survives in this world overrun with zombies. While escaping from some she stumbles into a shop only to find a hidden talisman that will change her life in more ways then one. After an accident she is confronted by a group of four hot fairies that have been tasked to kill her. Thankfully they get a little sidetracked killing zombies instead. What follows is quite riveting as they all work together leading to a fabulous ending though I would love to read more in this sector. A must read for RH fans that like some zombies and magic worked in. I totally loved it so I give it 5/5 stars.
This is the first book I’ve read in this collection or by this author. And I have to say I’m impressed. Calliope’s beloved town of NOLA is everyone with zombies, actually it’s the whole world is. While dodging zombies she escapes into a Voodoo shop and discovers a hidden talisman. She just wishes for the zombies to vacate her city but instead do you wish/spell goes awry and she creates 9 super zombies. Not knowing what to do she flees home and four unexpected men come to her aid. Well they want to aid her by first killing her and then neutralizing her mistake. But these are no ordinary men, these are four hot and sexy fairies. Somehow Calliope has to convince them they don’t want to kill her and work together to eradicate the zombie problem. Overall a fabulous book and I can’t wait to read more work from this author.
Voodoo Sector gives us another look at what the zombie infestation did, but this time we are in New Orleans.
Calliope is struggling to survive, but I love her enthusiasm. She wants to save her city and will do anything to do that. She's a badass but smart about it. She knows when she should run and when she should fight. She falls in love with her four fairies pretty quickly and they for her. These five do all they can to make it safe for what's left of the humans.
I liked Voodoo Sector, but felt it was missing something. I have no idea what its missing. I found myself skimming the story more than enjoying it.
This whole world has been amazing to read so far and I am enjoying all the stories so much. In this story, we end up in NOLA and the crazy spell Calli ends up creating while trying to get rid of the zombies. What I didn't realize when I first starting reading this one but was excited once I realized where the story was going, is that this is a reverse harem. I love reverse harems and the way the author wrote it just had me on the edge the whole time. I enjoyed it so much!
I have a shelf in my Goodreads that is for ‘Fav Locale NOLA.’ It’s a compulsion for me to read stories set in the Big Easy. And it’s a delicate balance between loving and hating books set in NOLA because the city has such a strong personality. I am a gray-area-girl in everything except for New Orleans, coffee, and how many humans I can deal with within one day. I got hard limits there. It’s crucial writers treat the City that Care Forgot really well.
The Zombie Year 2099 series has been giving me joy for weeks now, and Nala Kingsley’s Voodoo Sector delivered up for me some hottie fairies killin’ zombies. In 2099 the city has been laid waste by the undead. These aren’t your comic book brain-eaters; they are excellent hunters with a taste for blood. They can scent humans, so it’s hard to hide, and since NOLA is an abandoned city, it’s not like you can lose yourself in the crowd. Calliope LeBlanc has the losing hand in this game called life; all bets are against her.
I think the thing I most loved about Calliope is Nala Kingsley writes her as a warrior -- as Talen would say, she’s a Zombie Warrior Princess. I enjoyed her never-say-die attitude. And more than that, I loved that Calliope was so very pragmatic about her survivability.
When Calliope mistakenly turns some regular zombies into super monsters, four law-enforcing fairies come to kill her for being a powerful sorceress empowering the undead. But what they discover is Nine Lifeless Ladies Lurching and a haphazard magic handler who doesn’t know what she is. The five must team up to kill the Ladies before the Ladies destroy everything and everyone in NOLA and escape into the world.
It’s a toss-up, has Calliope’s sorcery brought about the end of times, or if fate is working some magic of her own.
The pacing was a bit off for this read. The first couple of chapters are exposition, and they are successful in building tension, and there are some nuggets here and there to make readers giggle out loud. But I feel an element is missing, some dialogue needed if only it is Calliope talking to herself or the zombies. With the TL;DR text the chapters become cumbersome.
What does rescue this dense opener is that the men are charming and easy to love from the word go. I have a type, and I loved Valoras, Talen, and Barion, but there is one in every RH that I feel is superfluous despite being a developed character.
I DON’T LIKE THE SOFT NURTURING HEROES. Garlan made me gack during his parts. Blech… yauck...aug...heeah! I find those fluffy-bunny-comfort heroes a waste of word space. Give me the saucy, sexy, roughened-edged, wounded, or aloof characters who are plain old butt-holes and give them more book real estate.
Garlan isn’t a bad character-- he’s not for me. I felt that a disclaimer was required after my tantrum to establish that it’s not on Nala Kinglsey.
Voodoo Sector is a slow burn, an action-driven romance about supernatural post-apocalyptic Louisiana, specifically the Crescent City.
I enjoyed ninety percent of this book, all except for the awkward HEA. I feel like there are times when an author writes a subgenre that they aren’t comfortable, and that discomfort becomes apparent in the reading. And the ending of this book disappointed me in how uncomfortable it made me feel reading it. The characters fell out of their established characterization, and it shifted so far outside of the atmosphere of the story; it felt as if it were the ending to something else.
Voodoo Sector is a successful NOLA novel, though. Long live NOLA! And may it survive Zombie Year 2099.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary advance copy of this book.
Voodoo Sector is a fast paged, at the edge of your seat, zombie apocalypse type of book. The book centres on Calliope, a young woman just trying to survive in New Orleans after the Zombie and others apocalypse. Once night when she is out hunting, she hides in an old voodoo store where she finds a talisman, but everything goes up the creek when instead of defeating zombies with it, she makes super zombies. Enter her four Faerie hunters who are sent to hunt her and the talisman down. It doesn’t really work out that way and the five of them come together to try and defeat the zombies, whilst protecting each other and trying to build a relationship.
This book is classed as a reverse harem story but it doesn’t really come together until the latter part of the story and the build up of romance and sexy scenes are slow. This primarily could be because the five are constantly fighting zombies and trying to survive. All characters are unique and different which makes it easier to figure out who is who and Calliope the main character is wonderful if at times a little naive.
There is certainly a lot of action in this book with a lot of killing of zombies and some wonderful writing in regards to New Orleans. If you like your harems, zombies and feisty characters, then this is the book for you!
ARC received for a fair, honest and sometimes long review 😊
The zombie Year 2099 series is a bit hit and miss. This was definitely a miss for me.
Calliope was a truly unlikable loner heroine who stumbles on a talisman while running from zombies in the city of NOLA. Somehow (and I’m not sure it’s ever explained how) she accidentally creates 9 super zombies nicknamed the ladies of something or other.
Upon returning to her shack she discovers 4 incredibly hot men of varying hairstyles and talents waiting to kill her. When a horde descends they decide to fight with her and the book follows this path for quite some time as they fall into a repetitive rhythm of trying to kill the super zombies.
Meanwhile, instead of character development and in a mix of awkward and often cringeworthy banter we skip right past lust and decide that she is in love with all 4 of them. By the time we reached any sort of intimacy I found myself so disconnected from the characters that I skim read through to the end.
While some may enjoy the Gilmore Girls esk banter and attempt at a strong female lead I found the plot to be quite weak and the supporting characters’ lack of personalities disappointing. This, coupled with major scenes being summarised in a few paragraphs, left me feeling underwhelmed and ready to move on.
This, of course, was the third book in the Zombie Year 2099 series. I read Lexi Voss's Andorra Sector first. I didn't know Andorra Sector was included in this series. That was by far the best of the rest, so far, in my opinion. This book, Voodoo Sector, was an easy read. A lot of fluff and not much storyline, other than Zombies in the book. The Zombies were not really a threat to the main characters. Books 1 and 3 had a hard act to follow when i read Book #2 first. I gave five 🌟🌟🌟🌟stars because I liked the ideas of the fairies and Calliope together. The premise was a little different and Nala threw in the required Zombies. It was fun to read. Thanks Nala.
Book Review: VooDoo Sector Author: Nala Kingsley My Rating: 5 Stars
REVIEW This story has zombies and yes super zombies. How do you get super zombies? Well, you have to read this story to find out. NOLA is overtaken and Calliope has been fighting the hordes for so long alone until... Enter four gorgeous others who at first are not so nice. Can they put things behind them in order to save many? Or will Calliope lose yet again? I enjoyed this story and the chemistry between these five.
**I read this book via Kindle Unlimited and I am voluntarily leaving my honest review of this book**
Ok for one this whole collection has been fun, now this one takes place in NOLA, when Calliope decides to make a talisman to keep the zombies out of her city she screws it up and makes them worse and then Bam 4 very hot Faries come to hurt her and stop them and the hotness that follows awesome!!
I couldn’t make it far. I really tried but this book was so boring & not worth the time to push through to the finish. I rather find another engaging book that is worth it.
