Red Thread ด้ายแดง (Novel) #1

Red Thread/ Until We Meet Again

Rate this book
Thirty years ago, Korn and Intouch were university students in Bangkok. Intouch entered Korn's life despite knowing that he was the son of one of the most influential people in Bangkok, the mafia. At first, Korn kept pushing Intouch away, but in the end, he couldn't resist the boy who was so full of life where he was the exact opposite and decided to let him into his heart.

However, in a time where homosexuality was unacceptable and having parents that were against their relationship and each other, Korn and In's love was bound to be doomed. Midst the chaos, while Intouch kept on fighting for their future, Korn could not deal with all the suffering his lover was facing and decided to give up. That day, two sounds of a gunshot rang through the air.
Their story ended with tragedy, but something had already tied itself between them, binding them together even after they were dead.

Years later, a freshly returned to Thailand, Pharm (19) who is a freshman in T- University has grown up always feeling like he is waiting for someone. Being riddled with sad dreams that always left him waking up with a wet face, fear of loud noises, and a birthmark on his temple, the boy has always felt like there is someone he is missing.

Dean (21), the third year swimming club's president at T- University has also spent his life searching for someone whose face he can not remember. The red thread of fate that had tied them together in their past life once again pulls the two boys back to each other, tying them to each other and a past that might not be worth remembering, but a love that is unforgettable. Because the red thread that binds the two hearts together will always lead one back to the other. Even though it might tangle or stretch, but it will never break.

Like a fading dream in the morning, like the lyrics of a legendary song
Like a Red Thread bound for a long time interlocking our love together
In this life if we can't stay side by side, we will fight for our dreams
When we are born again, please bound us in a relentless love:

Simply, the heart of this story is of a love story but if you look beyond that, you may find a problem, without a solution in near future. It is the continuous fight between conservatives and liberals, to prove their point that love should be free for everyone. Despite their class and gender. For many in European countries this may sound like a ludicrous comment. We are in the year 2020. Who cares about love between different genders? Well, this novel may make you reconsider that thought. Many countries (including my own) are rigidly conservative countries. I am in no way trying to portray my own motherland in a negative light, I am forever proud to be a Sri Lankan but the fact that many in our country would even laugh at this notion is quite sad.

This book contains to aspects that feel and hits closer to home with to Asian readers. Homophobia and spiritual aspects (reincarnation and such). As a Theravada Buddhist myself I believe in reincarnation. That we go in this cycle of life carrying the good and the bad and reborn with the fruits of the efforts we have put in our previous life. The story with even its title hints at a strong use of that aspect through out the novel. For me personally that gave a slight touch of familiarity. Which is one of the reasons I love reading Asian novels.
Next the most important part of the story, the rejection of the love between In and Korn. The book (and the series) both start with tragical moments. The author does not tiptoe into the harsh reality but gives us a full dash of cold water on the face to wake up. Next we are quickly transported to the present with Pharm and Dean. The back and forth between the stories and quite less than that of TV adaptation but good enough for the reader to feel the deep sorrow within In and Pharm and the guilt that Korn and Dean carries. The readers are never given a climax or a turning point which keeps our breaths caught until the last chapter. Many even found it anti-climatic but the beauty of this book lies there. Forgiveness. That was the true moral. The author perfectly shows that anger does not bring upon any happiness or satisfaction but ultimately by letting go of the negative anger would help all.

One of the many reasons this book and TV adaptation are high on the BL genre is the manner in which the author portrays the relationship between Pharm and Dean. Many authors and scriptwriters tend to make their work more "saucy" by adding simply unnecessary conflicts and arguments. This book shows that not all conflicts need anger, that love can exist even in a pure form between each other.

Generally I am not a fan of love stories. The tacky cliché lines make me roll my eyes all the way into my brain but few like this manage to capture my heart once in a while. Maybe half of the reason should be attributed to the TV adaptation of this, which actually made me read this, yet I do not regret anything. It was a simple yet sweet story with a dash of a message written through out it. I hope anyone reading this would not get blinded by the love story but see what the author is trying to reveal to the reader too.

I read the English translation on Wattpad after watching the drama. The book have more details, things that cannot be represent by dialog and action in drama like their internal monologue and dilemma. Some of the details we will realized just after reading it. I'm surprised that the drama follow the books closely. It's a genius writing, i love those smooth pickup line. If you read only the book, it seem more focus on Dean-Parm and not much flashbacks like in drama. The books also tell the story after they graduated.

Another MUST READ!! Very emotional and very memorable. I cannot hold back my tears, and this story has been lingering on my mind for a long time.

P.S. This comment is for both book 1 and book 2.

I read a translation of this book and I can say that this history is beautiful.
Love of Pharm and Dean is the most beautiful of this world.
I cried with history of In and Korn, they suffered so much, their forbidden love ended in tragedy.
This book has a serie, the name is "Until We Meet Again" and it is faithful to book. The serie has a little changes but really it doesn't important, because the history is same. However in the serie we can know a little more about Korn and In while the book is focus in the history of Pharm and Dean, their thoughts, emotions and feelings that with actions couldn't be transmitted in the serie.

6/5 ⭐️

Call be a simp but this novel had me in TEARS. Okay, I understand as an adult I should have “real” expectations of love but honestly this is my expectation. It’s so sad to see Korn and Intouch go through homophobia not only through society but within their families. Then getting to see Dean & Pharm find each other and rekindle the love that Korn and Intouch had mad me MELT. Honestly it’s so wholesome. I RECOMMEND THIS TO EVERYONE.

I really want to rate this higher since I love the show so much, but I wish I could have read this in the original Thai. The translation wasn’t great and I didn’t like how things were written (which could be a partial translation error). Other than that, I love the extra stories we didn’t get to see in the drama.

I loved the story, it's well written, the plot is really interesting. I cried so hard! It's really great, I just think that I'd enjoy more without the sex scenes. They seemed a little "forced", like if she did them just to praise the fans that like that.

Red Thread/ Until We Meet Again = Chapters 1 – 4.

It’s a promise. We’ll never stop... searching for each other.

I had a feeling that I would love this story as soon as I saw the book cover and read the plot, specifically this part: ❝The red thread of fate that had tied them together in their past life once again pulls the two boys back to each other, tying them to each other and a past that might not be worth remembering, but a love that is unforgettable. Because the red thread that binds the two hearts together will always lead one back to the other. Even though it might tangle or stretch, but it will never break.

Everything in this world is colorless and transparent... and books are the only way to make it vivid. That was what... I always thought.

IN became a beam of sunlight illuminating my life. Enveloped in the light of the sun, I made a vow from the bottom of my heart — I would cherish this light... even if it meant putting my life on the line to protect it.

That first feeling was indeed correct because I loved this whole story. It was such a beautiful and sweet love story!

I love the idea about the red thread of fate that binds two people and their hearts together, and that it makes them look for each other in every next life they live together until they find each other again, because they are always meant to be together. ♡

I’ve dreamed about them ever since I was a child...

I also love the art style by Haruyama Hibiko, it’s really beautiful!

This is the first manga story I have read that takes placed in Thailand so that felt new to me, and there’s some references to Thai desserts and food, and they’re also described in the end of the chapters. The story is also written by a Thai author.

Vol. 1 / Vol. 2

This was actually kinda nice. My nitpick is that this rather felt like the setting was a high school. I don't know if it's different in asia, but at uni you literally don't know most of your classmates, let alone people from other classes.
Other than that these characters had more social media fame than actual celebrities. Wtf is up with that?
My last complaint is that this book felt like reading a first draft. There was little to no descriptions, the povs were all over the place and most times I literally didn't know who was talking and if that character was male or female. (The hungarian translation didn't help with that either, and there were a lot of english lef tin the text without footnotes.)
But despite all these, it was still a wholesome little story even though I don't really enjoy romance.

Preciosa historia.

The plot twists are amazing and the storyline is just chef's kiss. I love how the author emphasize the reincarnation between these two lovely guys seeking for the love they didn't continue in their past lives. There's so much more to love and if you go beyond its definition, you will truly understand the mystery and power it holds.
