Romance/Mystery and something dark

Eddie and Callie or Caroline were perfect in the story. As the soldier with a past, Eddie was a perfect injured hero. Callie as a widow of a soldier is trying to build on her life with her two sons on her own terms. Her meeting with Eddie turns out to be special and he was not even the person that she was supposed to see. But their chemistry was undeniable and they decide to get together.

Beyond a stalker, they spend some more time together and that is when Callie's husband Jon comes back.

Then starts the mystery of why Jon comes back into his wife's life after nearly six years.

Eddie's team from the army all come out and they are divided about whom to support and  that adds to the mystery.

Shifting from the POVs of Eddie and Callie, the mystery and the romance has been well brought out.

Hayley was a very tough character and her complicated relationship with Eddie is also well brought out.

Very interesting story with plenty of characters. Good read.

Callie is a beautiful mother of two, now raising her young boys on her own as her husband Jon passed away while deployed.
Everyone has fond memories of him and assumed they had a great marriage but the truth was he changed after being deployed for so many years and each time he came back he was a different man who abused Callie behind closed doors.
Each time he came home, the hurt and pain continued to get worse so when Callie was told Jon had died it was like a relief.

The story starts off at the point in her life when she attempts to start dating again.
She is so genuine and her nervousness is so awkwardly funny and sweet, she made for an entertaining read.
Where some of her friends and family encourage her to start dating again, others make it clear she shouldn’t.

She meets Eddie who is the strong alpha type, and their attraction is instant.
Eddie too has his own history of pain and loss but has realised there is more to life than just working and decides to start dating Callie.

Even though they have never met before they are both more connected than they realise.
As both of their pasts come back to haunt them and the truth of their histories are revealed, they then need to fight to protect those they care about and decide if their own connection and happiness is worth fighting for too.

I really enjoyed this story.
There were twists and turns that I never saw coming.
I loved the chemistry and connection between Callie and Eddie, for the first time someone is there to protect her when she needs it the most, having done everything alone and by herself for so long.
The story has so much depth with each character and their back story. A good amount of romance, suspense and action that kept me reading late into the night.
Highly recommend

Path to Redemption is the first book in S. P Dawes Band of Brothers Trilogy I read book 3 a while back without realising it was a trilogy and enjoyed it so much I knew I had to begin at the beginning.
Thankfully, the books work as standalones as well as part of this excellent series.
I wasn't disappointed and within a few pages I was into the world of widowed Caroline, raising her two sons alone, and hoping to find love again.
After she is stood up on a blind date, her confidence is knocked back and she considers giving up on romance and then she meets Eddie, the owner of the bar where she was to meet her blind date.
The attraction between the two is instant and it goes deep, and Caroline for the first time in a long while believes she has found love again.
Until Eddie discovers who her late husband was and has no choice but to back away from her.
And this sets in motion a chain of events that puts not only happiness but lives at risk. The final scenes in this book is some of the most gripping, edge-of-the-seat drama I have read in a long while and the author pulled it off to perfection.
I can't wait to read the next one in the series.

This was my first book by S.P. Dawns. I was not disappointed. It is a great story and she does a great job of telling it.

I loved Eddie right away. The chemistry between him and Callie can be felt as you read. I love it when a writer is able to bring me in a story like that, make me feel like I am right there with the characters. There is so much going on with this book that you never get bored reading it. So many twists and turns that keep you guessing and often not even predictable. You will not be able to cheat, the ending will blow your mind and make you want to read more of her books.

I will be going back to read her first series so I can get to know a few of the other characters mentioned. Great Job S.P Dawes. I look forward to reading more of your books.

Very good read. Callie is a single mom raising two boys alone after their father was killed. The relationship was rocky and she has done her best to make his memory positive for her sons. She meets Eddie one night after being stood up on a blind date. They have incredible chemistry and it takes off from there. It all goes crazy when she realizes the man she is falling for knew her husband. There are a lot of plot twist that keeps you interested the entire read. I recommend this read and cannot wait to read the next book.

This poignant story is about the protagonist named Callie who finds her self plummeted into the unknown as she navigates becoming a single parent following the sudden early demise of her husband Jon

Many thought Jon was a wonderful caring family man, but behind closed doors, he was abusive towards Callie, therefore there is a sense of relief when he dies that she feels guilty about.

The book kicks off at the time in her life where she feels ready to consider navigating the world of dating again. Callie presents as a little dizzy yet sweet and quickly becomes endearing to the reader.
Not everyone thinks its wise to start dating again and Callie receives a lot of unwanted conflicting advice.

Then Callie encounters Eddie and the chemistry is hard to deny. Eddie has become a workaholic to mask his own painful past but decides to take a chance on Callie. There is an element of six degrees of separation as Callie and Eddie realise their lives are already intertwined and this is where it becomes complicated.

As a few plot twists are revealed, they need to make a decision about whether their love is worth fighting for. I really enjoyed this believable tale of old fashioned romance and a man who will fight for his woman.

Another great read by SP Dawes whose characters are always soulful and touch the readers heart.

Utterly fantastic :)
This is a brand new story from this author and I've read all of her books so far. I really loved this story and the characters were ones you could root for as the storyline continued.
Excellent writing and I would highly recommend this book.

I enjoyed this romance story of Callie and Eddie. Callie is mother of two young boys. Her husband has passed away while being deployed. Since it been years since her husband been dead she has decided to take a chance at dating again. Her friend has set up a blind date for her at a bar. But the man doesn't show instead she makes a fool of herself in front of Eddie.

Eddie is a owner of a bar and also a nice guy. When he first meets Callie it is at his bar. She has a red rose in her hair that she has remove to put in her purse. When she is leaving her purse gets caught on the beer tap. He comes over to help her but one look into her eyes and there is attraction between both of them. So later when his staff find her phone. He decided to return it to her personal and asked her out on a date too.

There a lot of chemistry between both of them. There also a lot of twist and turns that will have you the reader guessing what might happen next in the story. There is quite a bit of surprises that will make you wonder why this is happening in the story.

I received a complimentary copy from the author. This is my honest unbiased opinion.

This book is fantastic. SP Dawes has delivered with this book. The twists and turns have you turning pages and not wanting to put the book down. You will be on the edge of your seat. You will laugh at times and be ready to cry at other times. I read this as a standalone book but wishing I had read her Vine series before reading this one as it has some of the same characters. This book gives you enough background that if you don’t read the other series first you will be fine and can keep track of what’s going on. The Path to Redemption is very well written. Loved this book and most definitely can’t wait to read the next ones in this series.
Caroline aka Callie is very relatable. She’s a single mom who is a widow. She has had a rough adult life and is on her own except her best friend Maddie. She finally with Maddie’s help puts herself out there to date after 6 long years. All she wants is to be happy. Is that too much to ask?
Eddie aka Jaffa is the ultimate man wrapped in a package with a bow. He’s a Veteran and a pub owner. He has one hell of a past but has pushed passed what he can even though his past has a way of coming back at inopportune times.

Good story

Details: Path of Redemption by S.P. Dawes Published August 2020

Plot: A young widow trying to move on after her husband dies. A man many regale as a hero but she knew as her abuser. Enter Eddie, the handsome bar owner.

Thoughts:

Praise: The book’s premise is not unlike other stories I have read, but the author does a good job of adding some surprise twists throughout the book to keep you guessing. Callie’s character at times came off as uncompromising; however, once you delve further into the story, it becomes clear why. I found Eddie to be a likable guy who has his own demon from the past he is dealing with. Unfortunately, those demons may very well spell disaster for him, his family, and the fledgling relationship he is trying to build with Callie.

Cons: A few times in the story, it felt like it was dragging just a smidge, but it did not affect my enjoyment of the story overall.

Recommend: I recommend this story to anyone who likes an interesting thriller with a romantic backstory. There is some mild spice and some triggers (abuse). Although, in my opinion, the author does not graphically explain either.

Stars: 4

a tangled web

This was a lot. Double-crosses, double lives. There’s a found family element at its heart that anchors the story. But it’s a lot.

And then there’s the “how do you leave a review w/o spoilers” thing. Ahem. Here goes:

Callie’s a single mom down on her dating luck with 2 sons that mean the world to her and a meddling bff. Sound familiar? Nope! Callie’s a single mom on a crummy blind date, she’s a bit out of practice and there’s a very hot bartender…

Callie’s a single mom because her husband Jon died on an Army mission. The bartender who asks her out? Knew hubby but didn’t realize she was the widow…

Problem #1, and just when you think they’ll be able to move on? Gets worse. For, reasons.

And then there’s upset, painful reunions, something about heirs, and going on the run. Don’t forget the double crosses.

This was a very plot-driven narrative, which is good. But there’s also a huge cast of characters and it became a little difficult to keep each story straight.

Kudos on a very ambitious effort, and some intricate worldbuilding - with a sweet HEA.

loved it from start to finish.

A gripping novel where the reader is in the minds of both Eddie and Caroline, feels for both of them and wants to stop reading, jump into the book, and advise them. Except, you can't because every time you think you've sorted them out, another twist to the story sends you down a different alleyway.

I have read another trilogy by this author so already knew some of the side characters, but make no mistake this is easily read as a one off and an introduction to this particular trilogy. Be you a male reader (me) or a female reader, you will feel for Caroline and at some stages in her pursuit of happiness you will want to give her a hug - she is that real.

Not just a love story though, full of action, intrigue and wondering who can be trusted and who cannot.

Loved the whole emotional experience of this novel and if the images in my head are anything to go by it could easily be made into a film. I will take a break now, read something else but will definitely dive into book two as soon as I calm down from this one.

A dark suspenseful military romance.

How love can happen when all odds are stacked against you. This is a fighting love story of a single mother and a military hero.

The novel is told by Callie and Eddie. Callie is a widow and a single mom of two boys. Callie’s life is busy with a full time job and being a good mother – she finds little time for herself. Fortunately, for her life takes a romantic turn when she loses her phone and that’s when Eddie enters her life. Callie and Eddie’s relationship is a complicated layer cake that is filled with sexy chemistry, intense feelings and of course, some funny relationship moments.

S. P. Dawes writes the novel with fierce emotion showing the difficulty of finding and justifying love for both of her characters. Dawes reveals the emotional and complicated side of being a widow and allowing herself to fall in love.

Also, Dawes adds lovely doses of comedy which makes the novel charming to read.

Overall, “Path of Redemption” is a suspenseful romance novel that is full of surprises and heart retching moments.

Blind dates just didn’t work for single mom Callie, but her pushy friends just wouldn’t budge. Perhaps she just wasn’t meant to find her Prince Charming. After suffering through an abusive relationship, she just didn’t have high hopes for it and refused to be under another man’s control.

Then along comes Eddie, which is the last thing she needs. She refused to look at him, to want him. If only she could stop acting like a love-sick lunatic around him.

Story has a nice and simple narrative, although long and slow at times. With it’s crazed inner monologues, story had the makings of a good rom-com, but its focus was clearly more dramatic and empathetic. Readers feel for the characters and root for them all the way. Callie and Eddie must contend with their romantic feelings and bypass any past remorse and doubt to make it through. It’s both sad and happy. They must tread a path to redemption.

A nice story.

LOVED IT!
Eddie runs a bar but still has ties to his former life in the military. Caroline is a mother of two, widowed and works as an estate agent.
Their paths cross when she goes on a blind date. Nervous and deciding against it, she then makes a spectacle of herself in front of the hot barman when she decides to leave.
Leaving her phone behind, Eddie takes it upon himself to return it personally. Here starts a beautiful, touching relationship between Callie and Eddie.
The author has done an amazing job at creating an emotional storyline with lots of twists and turns and action. The suspense keeps you engrossed throughout, and the characters are relatable and loveable.
This isn’t the first book by this author that I have read and just like The Vine Series, Path of Redemption had me hooked all the way through. So much so I’m now halfway through the second book in this series. Highly recommended.

I truly loved this book! It has strong characters with real flaws. Her kids add such personality to the book adding so much depth! And the family and friendships add even more. (I can’t wait to read their stories!) The incredible details have a way of pulling you into the story and making it feel like you’re right there with them. The way they meet made me literally laugh out loud at the same time my heart was pounding. The chemistry between Eddie and Callie is through the roof hot! But the way they’re connected is the thing that does me in right along with them. This story is filled with action, taking you by surprise and leaving you desperate to know what happens next. This is a must read romance with so much heat, heart, laughter, as well as ups and downs! Once I started reading, I wasn’t able to put it down. This is a sit on the edge of your seat while you read kind of story. It was completely refreshing and I definitely recommend this one!

This is the second book I have read by S.P. Dawes, I love how succinct the writing is and how descriptions are covered with minimal words making the style very economical. The book itself is well written with almost alternate chapters swaying between Callie and Eddie keeping the book easy to follow. As the story unwinds, Eddie and Callie, two very different people are attracted to each other, Callie is much more vulnerable than Eddie following the death of her husband and bringing up two boys. It's a real joy reading how they are attracted to each other as feelings grow. Around all this deception is building around them culminating in a great finale full of suspense with a financial swindle that is well written and keeps you reading to see how it all ends. No more from me. If you want to find out read this fast dark excellently written 5-star book!

A story to savour!

Callies date didn't show, but as she unceremoniously exits the bar, she leaves behind her phone. Eddie, the bar owner, discovers her address and returns it. This is the start of a new relationship but as things start to unfold her life is about to take a drastic nosedive.
This is the first of a three part series and I can't wait to jump onto the next. Beautifully written, with plenty of suprises, this creative plot keeps you hooked from the first pages. The chapters flick between the two main characters, Callie and Eddie, which makes the story really easy to follow, weaving in and out of their thoughts and feelings through their on/off relationship. Plenty of things happening to keep the suspense and mystery alive. Brilliant storyline and one that easily makes you want to continue reading. Great job!

Intense!

I'm generally not a romance fan, because all of the male MC's are always the same. Gorgeous, rich, morons that some girl with low self-worth falls in love with. This was nothing like that. Eddie was super hot, because he was fully fleshed out. Gentle and empathetic when he dealt with her kids, but alpha masculine when he was alone with her. Literally, the dream guy. I actually understood why she liked him, and it was easy to feel the story through her eyes. It was full of secrets and Scandal. I had several WOW moments, and the ending had me on the edge of my seat. The romance evolved naturally. There were some spicy scenes, but they weren't gratuitous. Overall it was a fast paced read with an excellent plot. I highly recommend for people who appreciate authenticity, intensity, and emotionally rousing romance books.

I have had the pleasure of reading one of this author’s books previously (The Vine Cross), so when this popped up in my recommended reading I was happy to download. The story of Callie and Eddie, a single mum with two boys and an ex-military now bar owner. What I loved? The fact that they are real people, with real problems. We all know full well that life can be tough, and there are always twists and turns along the way. Callie and Eddie work through their problems to try and forge a better life for themselves – together. The story is brisk and I enjoyed the banter between the characters. What I disliked? Nothing. This was a great read. Well developed characters, lovely story and a great read from beginning to end. I was happy to see it’s part of a series and I will definitely keep going to see how it all pans out. I absolutely recommend this book.

Caring about the characters tops my criteria for grabbing and holding engagement in a story from the first to the final page.
"Path to Redemption" delivers on that storytelling essential.
The large cast swirling in and around the tenuous to tempestuous romance of Eddie and Caroline were at times of heightened plot tension difficult for me to track. Eddie's team of Army veterans who'd had and kept each others' six since Afghanistan, and his dysfunctional to bonded extended family, felt as if I'd been dropped into the middle of a series with a complex backstory. The novel's rom-com start shifted sharply into a romantic suspense thriller and that could be an unpleasant surprise for some readers.
But don't let these diversions stop you from enjoying an otherwise satisfying story. I'm glad that I kept reading and I look forward to reading more from this author.

Callie and Eddie meet in the bar Eddie owns when Callie’s there for a blind date that doesn’t happen. She’s been single since her soldier husband was killed six years ago, raising their 2 sons and happy to be free from a man who wasn’t what he seemed to the rest of the world. Eddie and Callie have the potential for a grand romance but circumstances get in the way before they really have a chance to try.

An engaging page-turner, Path to Redemption delivered on the steamy and suspenseful fronts. I enjoyed this book, my first of SP Dawes’s work, and picked up the next two in the series already.

I enjoyed reading this book. The author writes like me in the way that she goes back and forth with the MC's POV. Those are my favorite types of writing/reading styles. I also love drama and twists which this book delivers plenty of! It kept me guessing not knowing what was going to happen next. I'm also into slow burn. This story had just enough to keep me going, but with everything else I mentioned above, I was sticking around no matter what. I did seem to get a little bored around the 30% area of the book, but that's probably bc I love drama every second of the way. Lol. Lastly, the book needs a little bit more editing. I've noticed some run-on sentences that I had to read over again and some other minor misplacements, but it didn't ruin the flow of the book. I really enjoyed reading it. It took me 3 nights to finish and I highly recommend others to read it! Looking forward to reading book 2! (I found the book on bookroar.com)

Love story with twists and turns !

I enjoy romance and psychological thrillers so the twists added through the book made this more entertaining for me. I like how the chapters switched between Callie and Eddie so you got to read both perspectives. I can’t imagine losing a husband and going back into the dating world again but you can feel the spark come alive again for Callie. I was genuinely invested in her throughout the book and feel the author did a nice job in developing characters. The past of both characters come through with more to come in next books. I’m not a huge fan of series though so I wish this could have been wrapped up in one book ! I get antsy haha

I seriously did not want to be interrupted the last half of the book! People trying to make me to anything except finish and find out what happens to Callie and Eddie annoyed the crap out of me LOL

That being said, there were some drama areas I wanted pulled for a little longer but there is enough entertainment and teases in the feels to keep the pages turning quickly. The author scared me to death with the gunshot at the end! Good job, Ms. Dawes!! I was well fooled :)

Eddie was my absolute favorite a hero... ex-military, loyal, protective, strong and sexy! I can't wait to read the next in the series!

A wonderful but complex story of a family’s tragic loss; however, the truth of his past is hidden. His wife, Callie, meets a new boyfriend (Eddie) on a blind date and the two begin a relationship that fuels the story. This is a book about love and loss that will take the reader to the edge and back. Like the title suggests, it is a path to redemption. The author is very accomplished. This is one part of a trilogy: A Band of Brothers. I highly recommend this book. You will not want to put it down until the end.

This story goes well with a nice up of coffee and a large slice of cake!

This story goes well with a nice up of coffee and a large slice of cake! Cozy mystery with a refreshing twist kept me in my chair. Naturally I overindulged with the cake and coffee 😀😊 This story is more than suspense, though. It was very emotional, and thought provoking. Did I mention the action part? No? Well, read this book and you'll see what I mean. Perfect for a Friday evening so that you can stay up until late, like I did ;)

This is the second book I’ve read by S. P. Dawes, and this author has such a knack for suspense. The mystery behind who the villain is kept me turning the pages. The main characters are well fleshed out. I love a tortured hero and Eddie certainly is one but the real bonus was a heroine who’s just as troubled. I really enjoyed the mixup in the beginning, and when I thought that was going to push the characters apart, it actually brought them closer together. Great first book in this military romance series!
