Runaways . . .

You’ve heard about kids running away, but do we ever truly know why they run?

Rae and Law had no choice. Forced to run when life let them down, when it was either leave or be subjected to an unimaginable fate.

Can they survive?
Two young people, completely alone on the streets with nothing but each other.
This is their story.

Can love win?
Or will the big, bad world be even more cruel than what they had to face in their small hometown?

For Raelynn Sanders and Lawson Davis, anything is possible as long as they have each other.

Trigger this book deals with sensitive topics such as verbal and physical assault/intimidation. There is no rape, but some uncomfortable situations are mentioned and occur on page.

➽ KITTY KATS CRAZY ABOUT BOOKS

📚RUNAWAYS 📚 Is a full length romance book by Nicole Dykes. Spoken in 'Dual perspectives with an HEA.'

This took me a wee while to get into, I went from liking it to loving it with the feels rushing at me, and that was when the storyline took the the name of the title and they became runaways.

We're first introduced to Raelynn aka Rae her first day as a freshman, new school, new crowd, new to Texas where her mother is newly married to Rae's principle. Straight away she's met with animosity, singled out as the snobby rich girl and it's not until Lawson takes her under his wing that people start to accept her.

'𝐆𝐢𝐫𝐥𝐬 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭...𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐨𝐧𝐥𝐲 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐮𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲.
𝐈𝐭'𝐬 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐟𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐚𝐝 𝐛𝐨𝐲 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐬.'

Both have questionable parents, his mum loves the booze more, her mum loves her step-father more, but Lawson's lucky as he's got an older brother Nash, who has taken care of him at an early age and wants him to make something of himself and not be stuck in a dead end job in a town they both hate.

Rae's mother is all about status, she doesn't love, protect or care about Rae like a true mother should.
When Rae approaches her mother concerning the questionable way her stepfather talks down to her, degrades her, touches her, her mother doesn't want to hear about it.

When things escalate at home Rae takes matters into her own hands and runs away, Lawson also takes off with a bounty on his head, no money to their names. And Life is hard.

Until they meet an angel in disguise, a teenage boy who teaches them street smart, it's not long when
they meet their own tribe which take them under their wings unconditionally.

Raelynn & Lawson were the couple I didn't know I needed!! This was a story that I desperately needed but didn't know I did. Their love was not easy, but it was worth it through everything. Being runaways was not something they planned but it was desperate to their survival and in running they ultimately found their home.

Raelynn Sanders might have seemed like the girl who had everything. She had the fancy house, the driver to take her where she needed to go but under that she was drowning. Her stepfather was the man of all her nightmares, but she could never quite escape him, even at school. After her first meeting with Lawson the bad boy from the wrong side of the tracks she sees that even when you feel like all hope is lost that one person could be the one to you help change everything.

Lawson Davis was always destined to a failure, and he got in his fair share of trouble proving everyone right that Davis's aren't worth anything. Meeting Raelynn gave him that hope that he could be so much more than he or anyone thought possible. With his own problems at home Law recognized that same fear in Rae and wanted to do everything to protect her.

After years of Rae's stepdad going too far one night, he pushes the mark even further leaving Rae & Law no choice but to runaway to keep Rae safe. Two teenage runaways living on meager means, going from one place to the next is not an easy life and it comes with more troubles than they could have ever anticipated. When they are left homeless both Raelynn and Lawson are desperate for one thing to go their way and when it does should they embrace it or fear what could happen?

Nicole Dykes said that this story was unlike her other stories, and I could see why. She put her whole heart into these two characters and the problems they faced. This was a tough story to navigate with its share of triggers, but it was more than worth it. Raelynn & Lawson both stole my heart as well as several of the side characters that I am hoping to get stories out of in the future.

Runaways was so much more than story about two teenagers running away. It was a story of trust, faith, hope and ultimately love. Love for that person who changed your whole life, love for possibilities and love for all the good things that come after such despair.

I fell in love with Law and Rae. Their story was raw and even gritty at times. This author can write stories that draw in the reader and hold their emotions captive. I truly wanted the best for these kids. They went through so many BIG things, emotional things, heartbreaking things... but through it all they always had each other. They deserved to love one another. To fall so hopelessly for each other.

I adored all the people they had in their corner from the start and all the ones they met along their journey. They were loved by so many... even if they couldn't feel it and at times it seemed like they were trekking through the darkness alone.

Don't read spoilers. You want to go into this one blind. You'll want to feel first hand all the emotions that Nicole is going to pull out of your heart. You're welcome :)

"I'm starting to understand how Nash could think she's dangerous. Because she's wrecked me. Just not in the way Nash was talking about. She's ruined me for anyone else."

I loved this 🥰.

My first Nicole Dykes read was Immoral, which is a M/M friends to enemies to lovers (one of my favourite tropes and if you haven't read it then do so immediately because it's soooo good 🔥) so I was excited to get stuck into Runaways.

Runaways is a very different read - it's Lawson and Raelynn's story, starting off in high school. It's teenage M/F, first kiss, first love, first times - and all of that is just so endearing and cute and it's full of all those happy feels.

BUT this book also comes with triggers - attempted rape, abuse, homelessness - as life for Law and Rae becomes really hard, when they have to leave home to escape the unwanted attention of Rae's stepfather.

"God did I break him? Will he ever smile at me again? He's pissed. And colder than I've ever seen him".

This is a coming of age drama of sorts, raw and emotional, with some really tough times for our two MCs, but thankfully love and loyalty win through in the end. Gotta love a HEA 😍.

There was a good support cast, with Lawson's brother Nash, and Law and Rae's bestie Hayden, who they meet on the streets. Looking forward to both their stories too 💚.

Despite the adversity and struggle to survive, this is a definite 'feel good' book. I love the MCs and their relationship. Be warned: this is not a smut fest, so don't expect heavy steam because there isn't any, and it's not any poorer for that.

Recommended.

This book is awesome! I love every second of it. The story was delivered in such a fast-paced manner. I'm always been fascinated by the "𝘽𝙤𝙣𝙣𝙞𝙚 & 𝘾𝙡𝙮𝙙𝙚" sort of storyline or 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒎𝒆 𝒂𝒈𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒔𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒘𝒐𝒓𝒍𝒅 as a literary device.

𝖱𝖺𝖾 𝖺𝗇𝖽 𝖫𝖺𝗐 relationship dynamic and portrayal is the epitome of those facets, no wonder why I'm so submerged in the narrative.

I'm such a fan of Nicole works having to read her books even way before I joined bookstagram. I love her writing style and storytelling ways.

You want a book that's gonna make your heart bleed and soak your pillow in tears? Yeah, this is it.

I honestly had no idea what to expect going into this. I had my reservations because of the ages the the characters were in the beginning- when they met. But damn. That was quickly overlooked because I ate this story up.

My sweet Rae and Law- I just want to protect them with everything I have.
I absolutely loved this story of heartbreak and growing together.

I have nothing to fault this book on (except maybe the 7 emotional breakdowns)

**********

We follow Rae, who just moved to a new school where her step-dad is the principal, and her mums new boy toy. Oh, and he's a perverted piece of shit who treats Rae like crap.
She finds a friend in an 'outcast' , Lawson. And their friendship eventually blossoms into something more.
Lawson is loyal to Rae, no matter what. And when her creepy ass step-dad threatens her. He packs up his life. And they runaway together.
These teenagers face so many difficulties in this book and it honestly will hurt to read at times. But I can guarantee you, its totally worth it.
I won't give too much away because if I had to feel the pain. So do you lol.

I was given in ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I didn’t know what to expect going into Runaways since it was my first time reading anything from Nicole Dykes. This story definitely had its ups and downs, but overall I enjoyed it!

I wish that Raelynn and Lawson’s relationship was covered more in the beginning to build it up because there seemed to be a lot of telling instead of showing going on especially in the first 50%. On top of that, at times the romance in general had to take a backseat to focus on the hard-hitting issues, but I didn’t mind too much because I thought it was realistic. These characters go through hard things, and that’s not shied away which I appreciated.

After the 50% mark is when I really started to enjoy the story. I cared about the characters and appreciated the few sexier scenes we got toward the end. The conclusion was maybe unrealistic, but happy and feel-good which lightened up the darkness in the beginning. I would love to read more from this author again and am excited to try out some of her adult novels soon!

Oh my gosh what another fantastic story from Nicole Dykes and a completely different story from her last book.Thats the thing with Nicole she always mixes everything up,and you never really know what to expect, if you will get super angsty or incredibly sweet.Which is one of the many things I love about her.
I really Enjoyed this story a friends to lovers romance,Law and Rae really touched my heart in so many ways.
Their story gripped me from the very beginning, and I envied the relationship they had with eachother, its the kind of love everyone would love to aspire to.
Law befriends Rae when she is the newbie in school and from that moment they stick together through every obstacle and all the ups and downs that young people have. They are eachothers support and cheer leaders and I just adored them.
Its an emotional yet beautiful story and it held me captive until the end Runaways is an EXCELLENT Read that I could not put down.
I Highly Recommend it.

Ahhh this book was SO SWEET. I’ve been struggling a bit the last few days to get into a book but this has broken the slump big time! I devoured it in 2 hours!

It follows Raelynn & Lawson, a young couple who meet during their freshmen year and immediately form a connection, they start as friends and it eventually grows into love. Their relationship was just the sweetest thing I’ve read! They had so much love and respect for each other and I just adored them.

Unfortunately their story wasn’t always a happy one and this book did deal with some heavy and triggering topics but they were written so well and really made the story what it was. I’m not saying anything else as I don’t want to give any spoilers but it was such a good book!

I highly recommend this if you’re in a bit of a slump or you want an easy read with a hea! 🖤

Runaways is an emotional beautiful story of both the good and the bad that can come from life.

No matter your background you never know what someone is facing at home. This rings true for Raelynn and Lawson. These two souls found each other in their times of need and filled in the gaps the other had open. Together they faced some of the toughest challenges for a youth but never gave up hope and never gave up on each other. Runaways is another of this author's "all the feels" reads and I enjoyed their story very much!

Raelynn is new in town after her mother marries a much younger man. This man is the principal of the high school she attends and is a total creep. She meets Lawson at school, and he also has it rough at home as his mother is a drunk and they are struggling financially. The two fall in love and decide to run away together when Rae’s stepfather keeps threatening Rae and the two of them because he wants Rae for himself.

I enjoyed the first half of the book when the focus was on Law and Rae’s romance and them trying to figure out how to survive, but the second half was very disappointing. It just got more and more unbelievable until the equally unrealistic end. For me, things started going downhill when they were introduced to Hayden, the “guardian angel” around their age that they met on the streets with the face of a model and a heart of gold who happened to immediately care for Law and Rae and take them under his wing. Every character and situation from then on out was just too perfect and easy. Without going into too much detail, they were handed opportunities and money from honest and trustworthy people, the stepfather was dealt with off page while they were away so they could stop running, and they had a way too neatly wrapped up HEA that made no logical sense.

I love warm fuzzies as much as the next person, but if you’re going to write a story about runaways, then you need to give it some grit and make it believable. I’m not the type of reader who will just accept whatever is on page as long as it’s heartwarming. It needs to makes sense or it ruins the whole experience of reading the story (for me).

I also love relationship driven stories and tend to want to focus on the main characters. I don’t mind secondary characters as long as they are fleshed out and not just used for filler. It is a pet peeve of mine when the author starts adding secondary characters who become super important in the story but doesn’t flesh them out. I also appreciate diversity when it comes to characters. Hayden, however, seemed to only be created for that purpose. We were constantly reminded that he is gay, and he seemed to mostly be there just to hit on Hayden, and talk about men and sex. Surely there was more to this character than just his sexuality? Did he have a backstory or goals and dreams of his own outside of tagging along with Rae and Law?

I don’t mind secondary characters if they are interesting and don’t take away from the romance too much, but I didn’t love that the book went from a romance between Law and Rae, to a story about Law, Rae, and Hayden. All of a sudden within a chapter of meeting Hayden, Law was equally protective of him, and Law and Rae’s future and plans suddenly included him. Had he been a more integral part of the story to start then this would’ve been fine. But he’s the type of character who if you take him away it wouldn’t have made much of a difference to the plot. I want characters to have roots in the story, and this just didn’t work for me because as soon as he was added it seemed that the romance and chemistry between Law and Rae fizzled. Similarly, Rae and Law’s friend Tammy from high school seemed pointless as well. The book started with Tammy calling Rae a slut (because you know, girls have to be catty with each other), then all of a sudden they were best friends. Tammy wasn’t present for most of the book, but in the end she decides to pack up and move to be near Rae and Law and all their new friends? Again, seems like her only purpose was to add some drama and then fill the MCs social circle.

I have enjoyed other books by this author. I think she has some really interesting plots, so I’d give her another chance. But this book was a huge disappointment and totally unrealistic.

It took me 10 days to read this book because, you know....life; but also because it tested my calm so much i swear i couldn't read more than two chapters at time without feeling murderous 🤬
All due to a b*tch of a mother and a giant creep ass*hole 🤬🤬🤬
Sorry, but they really are the worst 🤬
However Rea and Law?
My sweet little babies?
They are everything 😍😍
So brave, strong and in love....
They melt my heart!!!
Nicole Dykes made me feels all kind of emotions and i loved every second of it 🖤
What i really appreciate it's that... this story it's not just about the love between two teenagers.
It’s about soulmates.
It's about family, the family you choose or the one that choose you.
It's about the hope there are good people in this world.
It's about having faith that things will turn right for those who really deserve it.

p.s. i loved all the side characters 😍 apart from those two, obviously 😡

Rae meets Law freshmen year of high school. Every day is a struggle for Rae, dealing with her stepfather who wants her. Her stepfather sexually assaults her multiply times but never raped her. Rae’s mom is too in love with Colin (the stepfathers) dick to pay attention to what’s happening under her roof.

Law wants to kill Colin for what he does to Rae. Law doesn’t even know the details since Rae keeps that pretty private but one day Law walks in on Colin on top of Rae trying to rape her. Law will do everything to protect Rae but he made her promise one thing, not to leave him. But when Rae begs Law’s brother, Nash who only wants Law to finish high school and have a good record, to take her to a bus station, he agrees.

Nash isn’t the biggest fan of Rae. He thinks she is using his brother but when Rae wants him to take her to the bus station so she can run away, he has a hard time. Nash only wants the best for his brother which is why when Rae wanted to run away, Nash tried to convince her to star. Nash knows that Law will hate him if he lets her leave and Nash doesn’t think Law can even survive without Rae in his life.

When Law finds out his brother took the love of his life to the bus station so she could run away, he makes Nash take him to Kanas city where she ran away to.

After that, they find a place to stay with their money they saved up, taking odd jobs to get by. When one day they are robbed and put out on the street, they meet Hayden.

Hayden shows them the ropes of living on the streets and helps provide for them too. Hayden doesn’t have much of a personality other than him being gay. I still am not sure if the author meant to include him in Law and Rae’s relationship but Law only what’s Rae. I think Hayden is just very close friends with Law and Rae.

Safety info:
Dual virgins
He has kissed others but wants to wait until marriage for sex. She has never kissed or been with anyone.
OM drama-ish- heroines stepfather is a sick bastard that keeps making moves on the heroine and groping her. He wants nothing more than to tear Law and Rae’s relationship apart so he can have Rae for himself.
No OW drama but towards the end one girl likes Law but he makes it clear after she walks in on him and Rae (she didn’t know they were a thing) that he only wants Rae and there is no one else for him
Condoms and birth control used
HEA and p.s. the stepdad ends up in jail🙃

I think love, loyalty, perseverance and hope are the beautiful, central themes that I loved in this book.
Raelynn (Rae) moves right before her freshman year of high school, her mom has married a much younger man who’s the high school principal in a small town.
Rae had trouble with the kids at school at first. They see her as a rich, spoiled girl who is the principal’s stepdaughter (assuming she gets special treatment.)
Nothing is further from the truth. Rae’s stepdad is beyond creepy and terrible to her. Her mother doesn’t listen to her pleas and fears. Her mother is an awful parent, choosing her happiness over daughters safety.
Lawson befriends Rae and sticks up for her almost immediately.
They become friends and then much more.
Young and sweet first love blooms. They have a bit of a secret romance. Him being from the “wrong side of the tracks.”
Rae’s stepdad’s intimidation and assaults escalate, out of good options the two young lovers become runaways.
They meet quite a few interesting and amazing characters along the way.
They struggle, they grow and they stick together.
Their journey is emotional, tragic and it’s also a testament to the strength of the human soul.
It’s a sweet first love story. It’s an emotional story about feeling powerless. It’s a story about hope and love.
The plight of people homeless and on the outskirts of society is portrayed sympathetically, without lot of detail or anything extremely disturbing. The fact that it’s a problem is disturbing enough in my opinion. It’s portrayal fit with the vibe of this book. Which is sweet with a sense of innocence even through all the ugliness.
I really adore these characters. They are extremely likable and I was crossing my fingers for their happily ever after. They all stole my heart.
The secondary characters are amazing! They add a lot of heart to the story. They are integral to the characters journey.
Hayden in particular is wonderful! I love him and definitely want his story in a book!
I look forward to more from this author, especially two secondary characters from this book! I’m very excited for those!
Really straight forward, decent and lovable characters. Beautiful and emotional journey.

𝗥𝘂𝗻𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 by Nicole Dykes is a fantastic story! There was so much more to this story than I thought there would be which was: 𝘢 𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘺 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘵𝘸𝘰 𝘵𝘦𝘦𝘯𝘢𝘨𝘦 𝘳𝘶𝘯𝘢𝘸𝘢𝘺𝘴. After reading a few of her books, I’ve learned that 𝗡𝗶𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗗𝘆𝗸𝗲𝘀 is an author I can trust. To me that means, an exciting story that will never be dull and not frustrate me on behalf of the characters. 𝗥𝘂𝗻𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 is the perfect length managing to be fast paced, never drags, and leaves you on the edge of your seat.

𝗥𝗮𝗲 is a young freshman when she moves to a small town in Texas to live with her mother and new stepfather. Her mother is selfish and unreliable leaving Rae to navigate her new reality all alone. 𝗟𝗮𝘄, an extremely attractive boy sees her and instinctively knows he has to help her. Most of the school assumes 𝗥𝗮𝗲 is a spoiled rich girl, when her reality is far from glamorous and actually, quite sad.

The friendship between Law and Rae blossoms. When things take a turn, Law is who Rae can count on to be by her side. There are obstacles at every turn. So many things happen to this young couple on their journey after they “runaway”. The love pouring out of Law is beautiful. Lawson Davis is boyfriend goals. The secondary characters are also amazing!

“𝙒𝙚’𝙧𝙚 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙩𝙤𝙜𝙚𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧, 𝙣𝙤 𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙩𝙚𝙧 𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩”.

This was a great story that definitely needs to be told. Police departments are often corrupt, especially in small towns. I’m from a town personally where anyone could get away with anything. That’s the cold, hard truth. More often than not, you are bound to be turned away when asking for help, rather than get it if you’re not wealthy or powerful. It’s such a pleasure to read an author tell stories like this. It was both realistic and also not overly dramatized, making it very enjoyable to read.

I definitely recommend this and the fact that it’s not long and also free on kindle unlimited makes it a no brainer.

I am so grateful to have received an ARC and am leaving my review voluntarily.

Runaways is the sweet, intense and angsty story of first love between Raelynn and Lawson who meet when Rae moves to a small town in Texas after her "mother" marries the much younger principal of the high school in town. I say "mother" because she doesn't deserve to be called one! A Mother would put her daughter first, before her husband (who happens to be a rotten, no-good SOB who deserves a MUCH worse fate than he gets in the end!), one who would NOT allow the situation Rae finds herself in to go on for a SECOND after being told about said situation instead of supporting the POS she married! Lawson (Law) is smitten with Rae immediately and proves himself to be Rae's number one supporter/protector when the mean girls at school set their sights on her because she's the principal's step-daughter (and when he suspects things at home are NOT the way they should be)! What starts out as a beautiful friendship turns into EVERYTHING!!!

Rae and Law's journey is one I won't soon forget, even though teen/young adult romances aren't my go-to! When Rae's home situation escalates to the point where she feels truly threatened, Law and Rae run...and luckily they end up finding their "people" (particularly Hayden, who acts as their guardian angel and takes them under his wing on the streets) They eventually get on their feet at a resort in the Ozarks....and then the whole thing falls apart but the HEA at the end is worth ALL the roller-coaster emotions Ms. Dykes puts you through to get there!

I would highly recommend this sweet, at times sexy, heart-thumping and heartwarming story to anyone! Rae is one of THE strongest heroines and Law.....well, let's just say HE is the swoony, protective Hero that makes everyone's hearts go pitter-patter! This AMAZING friends-to-lovers love story is one that I won't soon forget! Another MUST READ as far as I'm concerned!

This book was such an amazing surprise. At first I was a bit scared to read it, I thought with their situation it could end up being a depressing story but for me it wasn't like that at all. Runaways is a story of hope, it's about getting out of a bad situation and saving yourself first, it's about finding your family and your place in the world.

Rae & Lawson met in freshman year of high school and from the first moment the connection was there. They start as friends but soon realize they are so much more than that. He was always there for her, loving her, protecting her but they were young and he couldn't stay by her side 24/7. Rae's life at home was really bad, no one not even Lawson could really protect her when the monster was inside her house so when things get really bad and they don't see any other options, they decide to runaway.

Their journey isn't an easy one. They were kids who should be having fun but they had to grow up so fast. They went through a lot. It was scary, heartbreaking, emotional but in the end so fulfilling. When they were truly lost an angel came into their life to give them hope. It was beautiful to see how slowly they start to trust again, they realize there are good people in the world. Sometimes they couldn't see but they were loved and the ending made the journey so worth it.

Sometimes I did feel like things moved a bit too fast. Also I wanted a bit more of the romance aspect and even though they were young I did expect a bit more of steam, it's definitely more of a YA book. Other than that it was a really amazing story with a beautiful message. This was my first book by this author but it definitely won't be my last.

Runaways follows Raelynn and Lawson. Raelynn’s mother has recently married the a high school principal, and moved her to his small town where she attends the high school he works at. She is instantly picked on and singled out as a snobby rich girl, but Lawson comes to her defense, and the two have an instant connection, that evolves from sweet friendship to love. The two would do anything to protect each other. So when things at home get beyond tough for Rae, the two are forced to run away before Rae is faced with the unthinkable.

This story and these characters will stay with me for a very long time. I read the whole book in basically one sitting because I couldn’t put it down I just had to know that these two were going to be ok. The story was so different from anything I’ve read before. It was hard to read at times, the things Rae went through were truly distressing and I was so grateful that she had Lawson to lean on! These two went through so many hardships that could have broken them, but they really did prove that they could survive it all as long as they had each other. I was so relieved to see their happy ending.

Once again Nicole has made me fall in love with her writing and her characters. I definitely definitely recommend this book! Rae and Law have a very special place in my heart and I just know I’m going to be thinking about them and wondering what they’re up to for years to come.

***This book does have quite a few triggers one important one to mention is verbal sexual abuse/intimidation.

This is the second book I've read from Nicole and I can honestly say this woman knows how to write an angsty read!! I'm not big on YA romances but this book had me intrigued from the beginning and the further I read the more captivated I became, the more I couldn't put it down..... I just couldn't get enough of these characters!!

"We decide what we turn into. No matter what happens to us, we decide. And that, is power.”

This book follows Lawson and Raelynn giving us their story of young love, the cruel realities of life and the swoon-worthy moments that melt your heart. Raelynn's home life was heartbreaking from the evilness that was her stepfather, to the hurtful words of her mother. Lawson's only light in his dark world was his brother's love and protection.....until Raelynn. These two went through struggles most will never know, struggles that unfortunately happen all to often, yet through it all, leaned on each other found solace in each other, find a love like no other.

"I don’t know what the future holds for us. All I know is that she’s my future, and I’ll go or stay anywhere she wants me to."

If you haven't read a book from Nicole I highly recommend you pick this one up but be forewarned, it's a heartbreakingly emotional read that may be difficult for some but a beautiful story with ALL THE FEELS!!

This book! Let me start by saying this isn’t a book I would typically pick up.. but I’m so glad I did. It really takes you on an emotional journey. Rae is a young freshman when this book starts out- just moving to Texas, she’s greeted with animosity when she begins school. In everyone’s eyes she’s the rich girl whose mother has married a seemingly charming younger man who happens to be the principal. Enter Lawson who instantly takes Rae under his wing. I really love how you see their relationship progress. Lawson would do anything for Rae, even runaway when things go south at home for her. Rae has no choice but to run or face horrible consequences- with no help from her mother, she does just that. They go through so many ups and downs- always looking over their shoulder, drifting apart and just trying to make it in the world. They meet so many amazing people along the way that help in their journey. I would definitely recommend this book. It’s not the spiciest read (they are under 18 for most of the book so I understand)but the story is so good. I just wanted to hug them both and tell them it’s going to be okay.

Ps

I wouldn’t mind an extended epilogue at some point. I just don’t feel like their story is complete. 😂🖤

This newest offering is s bit of a departure from the steamy romances that I have recently been reading from this author. I did really like this book. Rae and Law's story is heartbreaking but at the same time sweet. They are kind of like the modern day Romeo and Juliet.

The interactions between Rae and her stepfather were uncomfortable. There are warnings that come with this book and this is one that might trigger readers. This is not to say that this book should be avoided as nothing transpires too far or graphic details.

This truly is a lovely story of first love and finding happiness. Here are a couple of my favorite passages:

"I'm starting to understand how Nash could think she's dangerous. Because she's wrecked me. Just not in the way Nash was talking about. She's ruined me for anyone else."

"One thing I've learned, I can get through anything in this world as long as I have Law by my side."

Another intriguing romance from Nicole Dykes! This story centers around Raelynn and Lawson who meet in high school. Raelynn is navigating some challenges as her stepfather (and the principal) is pretty awful and is making advances to her. Lawson ends up being her knight in shining armor and helps to protect her from her circumstances. I loved these two together as they were the epitome of young love. And Lawson was so swoony! The first half of this book was full of their relationship and building their loyalty to each other. The second half took a bit of a different direction as the two of them try to make it on their world. Love Nicole's writing as she always takes us on an angsty challenge.

I absolutely loved Law and Rae!! Their characters were so raw, filled with tragedy and forced to grind through everything, together because they gravitated towards one another. The tragic events that happened in these pages were real life occurrences, making the story that much better. Nicole takes us through all the hurt and pain associated with abuse and struggles, you feel like you’re right there with them.

𝕐𝕠𝕦’𝕣𝕖 𝕤𝕥𝕦𝕔𝕜 𝕨𝕚𝕥𝕙 𝕞𝕖 𝕟𝕠𝕨, ℝ𝕒𝕖.”

Raelynn endures so much throughout her adolescent years that shaped her into the strong character she becomes. Being forced to reside with your tormentor has to be the toughest aspect of anyone’s life, but Rae tries to stay strong and stand up for herself. On top of her mother who is completely selfish and not having her daughter’s best interests at heart.

𝕀 𝕨𝕒𝕟𝕥 𝕥𝕙𝕖 𝕘𝕠𝕠𝕕 𝕞𝕖𝕞𝕠𝕣𝕚𝕖𝕤 𝕨𝕚𝕥𝕙 𝕪𝕠𝕦 𝕥𝕙𝕒𝕥 𝕓𝕝𝕠𝕔𝕜 𝕠𝕦𝕥 𝕥𝕙𝕖 𝕓𝕒𝕕 𝕨𝕚𝕥𝕙 𝕙𝕚𝕞.

Lawson was such an amazing character and perfect for Rae. He always had her best interest in mind, always making sure she was safe from harm. His protectiveness over her was endearing right from the beginning. His love shone through all the darkness, even when they were struggling. I absolutely loved how no matter the circumstances, it was him and her against the world.

“𝕎𝕖’𝕣𝕖 𝕚𝕟 𝕥𝕙𝕚𝕤 𝕥𝕠𝕘𝕖𝕥𝕙𝕖𝕣, 𝕟𝕠 𝕞𝕒𝕥𝕥𝕖𝕣 𝕨𝕙𝕒𝕥”

The growth of these two characters was monumental, even from a young age. They faced hardships and tragedy head on together, their love for the other never wavering. They count on each other, making the other better as they mature. Through every obstacle placed in their way, they fight through it together. Lawson’s love for Raelynn is so true and pure, completely undeniable with Rae’s feelings mimicking his.

“𝕀’𝕞 𝕛𝕦𝕤𝕥 𝕙𝕒𝕡𝕡𝕪 𝕪𝕠𝕦’𝕣𝕖 𝕙𝕖𝕣𝕖. 𝔸𝕝𝕝 𝕀 𝕟𝕖𝕖𝕕 𝕚𝕤 𝕪𝕠𝕦.”

The events that transpired unfortunately are real life and needed to be addressed. No one should be afraid, regardless who their abuser is or the circumstances. You are not alone, there’s always someone who cares. It’s better to be safe than sorry.

I was generously given an ARC in exchange for an honest review!
f: Raelynn
m: Lawson
(Dual POVs)

This book was a bit different from Nicole’s norm in the sense that these characters were young teenagers in high school, but don’t be misled by their ages. Everything Rae and Law had to go through didn’t really allow them to act like normal teenagers. Neither one of them had the best home life, and after running away they are faced with so many struggles that they are forced to grow up fast and face some of the ugly realities this world has to offer.

There was definitely a recurring theme throughout this book of protection. Rae and Law desperately wanted to protect each other, which at times might have caused more harm than good. There was also Nash, Lawson’s brother, who had always felt responsible for Lawson and didn’t always approve of the choices Lawson was making because he just wanted to see him succeed in life. Lastly, there’s Hayden who stepped in and took Lawson and Raelynn under his wing to help them survive. Collectively, it truly warmed my heart with how selfless and caring these characters were in trying to protect one another, even if it meant putting themselves in harm's way.

In the end, I am so happy these two found their own slice of happiness with people that they love, that love them in return! Nicole states in the notes at the end that we will be getting books for both Nash and Hayden and I am quite excited to get to know them more, as well as possibly (hopefully) get a few more glimpses of Rae and Law!

Favorite Quotes:
I’m starting to understand how Nash could think she’s dangerous.
Because she’s wrecked me. Just not in the way Nash was talking about.
She’s ruined me for anyone else.
-Lawson

“You have so much to lose.”
“You’re the only thing I care about losing, Rae.”

Runaways is a different type of book from Nicole Dykes – it contains everything we love about her books – angst, steam, tragic backstories, and redemption, but it's YA style. It’s taken me a few days to form any thoughts about this book. Initially, I was on the fence on whether I truly liked Runaways. Now that I’ve had a few days, I’ve come to the conclusion that I love the book. Runaways contains a step-parent that is just terrible. While I didn’t deal with the exact same situation, I’ve had TERRIBLE step-parents.

Lawson and Raelynn are young characters, but they were written so beautifully and I love them! When Law and Rae are forced to go on the run, the adventure of a lifetime begins. With everything they go through, they meet some really amazing people. Hayden being one of those people. When things turn bad for the young couple, they have to go to the streets and that’s when Hayden comes into play. And oh man, I so want to know his story. I’m curious about Lawson’s brothers story, too… since someone clearly hurt that guy to make him the way that he is. Lets just say he is very against Law and Rae’s relationship.

"We're in this together, no matter what."

Despite everything, these two stick together and I'm all for that! Most young relationships don’t survive. And one where they run away, live in a dumpy hotel, and eventually on the streets? Yeah, those types of relationships are few and far between.

“You will forever be my always.”

While those words aren’t in Runaways, they should be. It pretty much describes Lawson and Raelynn’s relationship to a T.

No words will do this book justice – just read it!

Once again Nicole has taken us on an emotional journey with Runaways, and Raelynn and Lawson. They have an immediate connection and bond and Law is very protective of Rae, they both don't have the best home life and that makes their bond grow stronger. The things that they are having to deal with at home has also made them grow up faster than they should have to. This story is the epidemy of the grass ain't always greener on the other side. As time goes, things at Rae's with her creepy stepfather, and her crazy ass mother are getting to the point that Rae feels she has no other option then to run away, and Law has every intention of going with her. That day comes sooner than either one thought it would, and Rae tries to go without Law, she feels so guilty, she feels like she's ruining Law's life and future but of course Law doesn't see it that way, as far as he's concerned Rae is his life, and his future. He finds her, and they end up running together, things certainly aren't easy, but they meet some amazing people along the way who end up giving them the help they so desperately need. Through it all, while Rae and Law have some issues between them, they always stick together. You will fall in love with Rae and Law, and you will root for them to get all the good things they deserve, and you will hope that those that have done things to hurt them will also get what they so richly deserve!! To find out if all that happens, you are going to have to read this AWEMAZING book that I am so recommending....You need to read this book!!!

I know I probably sound like a broken record at this point, but there isn’t a book that Nicole writes that I don’t like. She has a way of writing that just pulls you in and then you can’t stop. Every book you read from her isn’t the same thing over and over again. That just goes to show you how amazing of a writer she really is.

This book was something else. I never know what I’m getting into with Nicole’s books but I was not expecting this. Once I started I couldn’t stop, as always with her books to be honest. This was a book of growing up, hard times and love. Rae and Law are two of the strongest people, being so young and having to deal with what they have to deal with makes me love them so much more.

Rae is a “spoiled rich girl” or so everyone thinks. She has a creep of a stepfather and a mother that could care less about anything except the stepfather. Rae is living life just to get through high school so she can move away. Law is the one who sees her for who she is and they become friends. Law and Rae are young but know that they are it for each other. They will go above and beyond for each other even if it means running. Their love is real and they have to overcome so many things with each other. This was an amazing book. I highly recommend it.

Now I’ll be waiting on Noah and Hayden’s books.

I received this book as an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This was a much darker book than I was expecting, especially for high school age kids. With that being said, it is unfortunately what some kids go through in reality. Raelynn is the new kid in town after her absentee mother marries the local high school principle. What everyone sees on the outside is a young handsome sporty guy, and what Raelynn sees is a monster. Starting with issues with how she is dressed to outright calling her names, to making promises she hopes never comes true.

Lawson has his own issues at home from an alcoholic mother to a father who only comes around when he needs money leaving his older brother to help care for him. He sees something in Raelynn and immediately comes to her defense.

I loved how their friendship progressed and how Lawson was willing to be patient with her and also became her protector.

As the years progress and her stepfather progresses in his attempts Raelynn can't stay any longer. Lawson refuses to let her go alone.

The road these two take is heartbreaking and just painful to read. Along the way they find their own little family and they become hopeful that their future is brighter if they stick together.

I received an arc for review, all opinions are my own and given freely.

I absolutely 𝑙𝑜𝑣𝑒𝑑 𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑠! This was such an emotional rollercoaster. Ray is new to town when her mother marries the principal of her new school. Her stepdad is creepy and always inappropriate with her. No matter what she does or hides, she can’t get a break from him. All she wants is to get through her four years of high school and then away from her stepfather.
She makes quick friends with Lawson, and they become inseparable and the most adorable couple. He’s so protective over her, but doesn’t know the whole truth of what goes on in her house.
This book spans through their years of high school. When things get bad enough they decide to leave. Lawson refuses to leave her side .
It was so sad to see two such young adults have to go through this. The characters were written fantastically, always able to get in their heads and know how they feel and what they’re internally experiencing. I really think this was just outstandingly done.I 𝑛𝑒𝑒𝑑 more. I wanna know their story through adulthood. I am so sad it’s over.
Absolutely recommend this !!
