A reunion of friends in remote Scotland turns into a terrifying ordeal in this twisting crime thriller by the author of The People Next Door.

On his way to Scotland for a reunion with his university friends, Billy Maguire runs over a pedestrian. But this is only the start of his problems . . .

Realising the man is alive, Billy puts him in the back seat of his car, planning to leave him outside the nearest hospital. But when the man dies, Billy panics and drives to the reunion with the body in the car, where he begs his friends for help.

Tension swirls within the group at first, but when the dead man's ID reveals him to be a notorious criminal Dougie McCool, they decide to get rid of the body. The only problem is that some dangerous men are looking for McCool--including his brother, who is willing to brutally exploit the circle of friends to get what he wants. But will he succeed or can they get away with it?

With Friends Like These
by Keri Beevis, Joshua Manning (Narrator)

The story starts with Billy Maguire (I've nicknamed him Dunderhead Billy, in my head), drunk driving (in Scotland they call it drink driving), late to a reunion with five of his university friends. Billy is as selfish as the day is long so when he doesn't see a man in the road (it's nighttime and the middle of nowhere and he's drunk, remember?) he isn't upset about the injuries to the guy but instead is worried that he'll get in trouble for drunk driving and mowing a man down. So he tosses the man in his backseat, he's spent his life getting into trouble and being bailed out by others, why stop now?

I'm thinking that at least his friends will do the right thing, of course they will! I was so very wrong. And Dunderhead Billy isn't the only one who does dumb things. We slowly learn the back story of these six "friends" (who needs them when this is what you get) and there is only one of the group and maybe another, sort of, that I could like at all. Lots of stupid decisions, not just from these six but anyone else we meet, and chaos continuely ensues.

Boy howdy! On top of doing dumb things, half these people are bumbling klutzes. As funny as a few things are, the kind of funny where you know you shouldn't laugh but you are going to laugh anyway, for wimpy me, this story had me feeling very anxious. It's brutal. Sure, more than a handful deserve what they get but I'd rather not read it in such detail. Still, it's a good story, it kept my attention, and I wanted to know who did what and who didn't do what and even why, so I hung in there even though I wanted to cover my ears as I listened to this audiobook.

With friends like these….who needs enemies?

Billy, after consuming too much to drink, gets behind the wheel (bad decision #1) to drive to a remote location in the Scottish countryside for a birthday reunion with 5 of his friends, when he hits a pedestrian on a deserted stretch of highway. What the heck was a pedestrian doing all the way out here? Billy can’t report it and be charged with a DUI, so puts him in the backseat of his car with a plan to leave him outside of a hospital and drive away (bad idea #2). The man dies in his backseat and Billy completely panics.

Billy stupidly shows up at the reunion with the dead man in the backseat, and he and his friends all panic and proceed to make one bad mistake after another, each one making things worse not better. It was a comedy of errors. A dark comedy.

Turns out the dead man has quite the history and there are bad people intent on finding him. Billy and his friends forgot to consider the fact that a cell phone is traceable. Things go from bad to worse. Have you watched a movie where you are on the edge of your seat and you scream, “No, don’t do that?!” at the character(s)? Yeah, this is that movie in book form.

If you asked me if I would enjoy reading about a group of unlikable characters, I would answer no. But guess what? It turns out I do in the hands of this author! Each character has a past and a few are hiding some pretty big secrets. I loved hearing the different points of view and their thoughts. I also loved the dark humor and watching the dynamics at play.

The real mystery here is why this group of people are even friends, ha! Although they are more frenemies than friends, which certainly adds to the fun. The revelations and twists come fast and furious, with more than a few surprises in store for the reader. A few times I actually chuckled, more than once I held my breath, and I may have even gasped a time or two. Wait till you find out WHY the dead man was walking down the road!

5 stars for the genre! This was well-written, fast-paced and unputdownable with excellent character development and a pitch perfect plot. I flew through it and found the ending completely surprising and satisfying. This would make an excellent movie.

The audiobook narrator, Joshua Manning, was perfect in the role and his Scottish accent is easy on the ears.

With a title like this, you just know you need to watch these character's backs!

I wanted to listen to this audio every chance that I had some free time. It starts off strong and builds momentum with each chapter.

I enjoyed the wooded, isolated setting in Scotland. It gave the story a very eerie, sinister feel. The beginning is like an opening for a horror movie! The character development was on point and the author gives the backstory that reveals their past, their reasoning, secret crushes and why these friends might not trust each other. Billy was a complete dipsh*t, but still kind of likeable with a devil/angel on his back pulling him in different directions.

The narrator was great with his slight accent, kept the story pitch-perfect! A fast and furious listen!

Billy is heading out for a reunion with his friends. He’s running late and has had too much to drink. Does he do the responsible thing and pull over until he sobers up? Well of course not! Then we wouldn’t have a book!🤣

In a drunken stupor, Billy continues his little joy ride down a secluded road, inevitably striking a pedestrian. Instead of calling the authorities or his friends, he stuffs this poor man into his car and continues on his merry way to the reunion! Wow Billy! Not the most brilliant move by any means! But it’s just that premise that grabbed me and I knew I had to listen to this audio.

I did have a bit of trouble in the beginning keeping the characters and their relationships straight. But then settled right in for a thrilling ride!

If you enjoy a tense psychological thriller…you’re in for a treat! And the narrator did a great job to add to the suspense.

A reunion with university friends in Remote Scotland sounds wonderful, doesn't it? A time to catch up, to celebrate a birthday, to reminisce about good times, and have some fun - what could go wrong???

Billy is on his way to the reunion, decides to start celebrating early. After stopping and enjoying a few drinks, he gets back in his car and hits a man. Billy puts the man in his car with plans of dropping him off outside of a hospital, but when the man dies, Billy freaks out. He's now in a boatload of trouble, but instead of doing the right thing, he drives to the reunion and asks his friends for help.

That's a BIG ask!

Then they find a mask, cash, and a knife. The man Billy hit is a criminal and if they had doubts before about helping Billy, they are now onboard. They will get rid of the body and keep the money.

They never thought about who would miss the dead man.

This was a fun one as they friends are quite the characters. They are an interesting lot, what you see may not always be what you get with this lot. The tension mounts, as the danger intensifies.

I listened to the audiobook and enjoyed the narrator. I thought he did a great job, but I also feel a female narrator would have been nice for the female characters in the book.

This one kept me on my toes. As I listened to the audiobook, things played out like a movie in my mind. I enjoyed learning more about the friends and their present and past histories together. The setting in this book was fantastic and added to the overall sense of unease in the book. A remote location, secrets and danger make for a riveting suspenseful read/listen.

This was my second book by Beevis and I can't wait to read what she writes next.

Tense, suspenseful and dark.

The characters in this novel were impossible to like. They were all, with two exceptions, really horrible. Revengeful, self-centered and obnoxious. I felt sick by them all and my day was tainted by them. The plot didn’t impress me either.

if I could give this book a 10-star rating, I would.

"With Friends Like These" was sinister, unsettling, smart, riveting, and unpredictable -- all at the same time.

On his way to a remote location in Scotland for a birthday party/reunion with his university friends, an inebriated Billy Maguire hits and kills a pedestrian on an isolated road.

Billy panics, puts the body of the dead pedestrian in his car, drives to his final destination, and begs his friends for help.

The "small group of friends going to a remote location for a party/reunion" is not a new "locked room" thriller premise.

In fact, the book market seems to be flooded with "locked room" thrillers right now. (UGH!)

Kudos to author Keri Beevis for taking an overplayed premise and creating an incredibly tense psychological thriller that is tightly woven, intricately plotted, and unputdownable.

From beginning to end, "Friends Like These" was very fast-paced and never missed a beat.

But it was the author's superb character development and misdirection that set this book apart from similar books in its genre.

All of the protagonists in this book were deeply flawed and vividly portrayed.

I thought that I knew all of the protagonists well, but when the book ended, I discovered that I did not know them at all.

I listened to the audiobook and the narrator did a superb job.

"With Friends Like These" is one of my best reads of 2022 and it's "books like these" that you will not want to miss.

Twisty and darkly comedic thriller about a group of friends, (with secrets) getting together for a reunion in a secluded Scottish location, where things take a nosedive straight off the bat. Slightly reminiscent of the film Shallow Grave, (starring a pre-Trainspotting Ewan McGregor) which is also worth watching.

What a rip roaring excitement filled read this was
A group of life long friends meet up at a rural posh ‘air bnb’ to ‘re-connect’ but bring with them secrets, grudges, lust and lies….oh and a dead body😎 much more to it than just that of course but to say more would ruin how it all happens!
I loved the tense atmosphere of the book, the whodunit element and also got to say at times the dark humour, add this to a rogue set of narcissist characters ( some likeable, some loathable ) and altogether it is a mystery/adventure/thriller with teeth!
A change of direction for the author and you never know how change will be but this was perfect and I thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience

3.85⭐ for this thriller

Featuring ~ multiple POV

I made the mistake of beginning this one, then going on vacation where I wasn't able to listen at all. I had a week long break that made it hard for me to get back into the story with ease. I had forgotten who was who and who was more connected with who, but all around I liked this one.

6 friends ~ Billy, Nancy, Griffin, Amelia, Ross and Jonah ~ are meeting at a remote house that's 4 1/2 miles from the nearest neighbor for a reunion to celebrate a birthday. I loved that they each tell a bit of the story as the chapters alternate between their perspectives.
I don't even know why they wanted to reunite really ~ there was so much drama between all of them. There are some nice twisty secrets they all have too. I am not against swearing, but if I am noticing it then there must be an abundance.

It comes in at 8 hours and 50 minutes and fine sounding at 2x. Joshua Manning did a pretty okay job narrating. Although his accent was perfect for the Scotland setting, I thought he sounded a little monotony at times. As always I wish there was a female narrator for the women characters though.

I have not read Keri's work before and I'd like to do so again.

Friends to very end!

When friends plan a reunion in Scotland at an Airbnb, they get a lot more than they bargained for when their friend Billy shows up drunk as a skunk with a dead body in tow.

The moment Billy strikes the pedestrian with his car on a deserted road, he panics. Not knowing what to do, he stuffs the body in the back seat of his car. Big mistake. Huge.

Upon arriving at the Airbnb, he asks all of his friends for help. They agree. REALLY?!?

Talk about decisions that have big consequences! Turns out that the dead body is that of a notorious criminal, whose “family” is already on the lookout.

A wild and crazy novel with a lot of twists and turns. With Friends Like These was a bit over the top for me, though it was highly entertaining if nothing else. I listened to the audio and was personally not a fan of the narrator, which may have taken away from my enjoyment. In this case, I think I would have enjoyed it more if I had read it.

I am underwhelmed.

My thoughts while reading:
"So far, I don't like anyone...
Typical psych thriller making you despise humanity.."

"These characters are dumb."

Alas... I still like no one, and the end is nigh"

I literally could not have cared what happened to anyone in this book. Nothing was wrong with the writing mechanics; I didn't feel invested in the story; it felt too surface-layer. The pacing was fine, on par for a thriller.

There were many ridiculous blunders by the character and little believability. The mystery was quite evident.

Overall, nothing wrong per se. But nothing this genre hasn't seen many times before.

I blew through With Friends Like These so fast I didn't even have time to list it as "currently reading" here on Goodreads!

I'm not usually a fan of books where there's something to actively dislike about almost every character, but I found myself immediately invested in this reunion gang's holiday. These were mostly despicable people, with a useless guy thrown in for good measure, and perhaps two worth rooting for, but we don't know this until the end. Watching their celebration fall apart, and knowing even worse was sure to come, was remarkably fascinating. I kept coming back, expecting the worst and finding it. It was disturbingly entertaining.

Especially satisfying was the ending, which brought a few key plot points full circle. I won't say those who deserved it "got theirs", because it wasn't that simple. But I nodded a few times as the author, Keri Beevis, wrapped it all up, thinking, "Yes, that works."

I wouldn't recommend With Friends Like These to just anyone, but if you like dark and twisted friends-betraying-friends stories, then you'll love this one. I fully expect HBOMax or Netflix to make this into a movie soon.

I have been fortunate enough to read all of Beevis’s books from the beginning and have enjoyed each one immensely, with a five-star track record – until now…

Hand on my heart, this was not my most favourite of reads by Beevis and I wasn’t sure I fully enjoyed the style of the story. I did not find it thrilling or suspenseful, like her other novels, and thought the plot felt a bit tired and forced. Furthermore, when reading the author’s acknowledgments at the end of the book, I was not surprised to learn that this book marks Beevis’s final one with her current publisher. I wonder if pastures new will result in refreshed and revitalised writing.

So, onto why this book was still worthy of a decent rating. There is a dark humour to this book because the plot is quite predictable and instead you are watching a group of supposed friends that clearly have no loyalties to one another. After each calamity, I could foresee what the next disaster would be. However, the enjoyment came from watching things fall apart between the characters and what their reactions would be.

This group of “friends” all have contrasting personalities but I did find Ross’s character to be the most forgettable. I also wanted Nancy to be more predominant in the narrative because she sounded like quite an interesting character. On the other hand, I quickly despised Billy and Griffin for their attitudes and treatment of others. Quite honestly, I was pleased to see when things did not always go there way!

I find the cover to be unusual. Firstly, I cannot decide if this is one character or two being represented. If it is two, I wonder why the emphasis is on the female characters of Nancy and Amelia when the whole group are involved in a tale of many mistakes. In this sense, I think I would have preferred each of the friends to be represented on the cover, as this is misleading on their importance. However, if this is just one character (because, let’s face it, both sides of the face look too similar for it to be different people), then why just Amelia or Nancy? The former has a larger role in the story but I would disagree she is at the heart of the narrative. If focusing on one character, why not Billy, who is the catalyst of events for this nightmarish weekend?

This book becomes a depiction of many errors, some proving fatal. I enjoyed the mystery surrounding some of the plot developments and felt as puzzled as some of the friends. Furthermore, Beevis does provide a background to the friendship group and I liked returning to the university days to see how each relationship was formed. That being said, I still could not understand why they would agree to go away with one another, as clearly there are a lot of faked emotions!

A different type of story-telling from Beevis that was enjoyable but not my favourite. It is interesting to watch a group fall apart when some truths are revealed, plus the extent that some characters will go to, to ensure they are protected. To be honest, it’s not a group I would like to holiday with anytime soon!

With thanks to Bloodhound books for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

AUDIOBOOK REVIEW
🌟🌟🌟🌟

A birthday celebration brings six college friends together. If you like reading about loathsome characters, this book has its share. Most of these “friends” don’t even like each other. Why would they want to get together? Well…one of them has a motive but before it’s revealed, there is a terrible accident.

Billy is a big drinker known for his screwups. He starts the celebration early and hits a man on the road to the Air BNB. He panics, puts the body in the car, and continues his drive. As it turns out, the man is a thug and his friends come looking for him.

This thriller has many twists that will keep you on the edge of your seat. I haven’t read this author before and she has a collection of books that look just as enticing!

Sincere thanks to NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for this gifted audiobook. This review is my honest opinion.

My Rating: 2 Stars!

This is my second Keri Beevis. The first was “The People Next Door” and I gave it 4.3 Creepy Stars! Yep I liked it and have been looking forward to reading another.

Six friends: Amelia, Nancy, Ross, Billy, Jonah, and Griffin agree to meet in Scotland to celebrate Griffin’s birthday.
Billy Maguire is travelling by car up from London it's been a long time since they have all been together; on the way he is in a car accident and hits someone. He knows he is in trouble as he has been drinking but knows he cannot leave the guy to guy in the street.
Friends are waiting for Billy to arrive and sure didn't expect to see a dead body in his car.

I was hoping this might be a bit like “The Big Chill”.
Nope certainly no dancing around the kitchen in this one!

I am a big psychological thriller fan, love the twists and turns ~ unfortunately the unlikeable characters, their overuse of f-bombs, plus the audiobook narrator made this a big disappointment for me.

And Wow it's a cracker and very heart pounding to read.
Billy Maguire is travelling by car up from London to Join, Amelia, Nancy, Ross and Jonah, it's Griffin King's birthday bash and it's been a long time since they have all been together, but unfortunate on the way he runs into big trouble, they are all waiting for him and don't expect to see a dead body in his car, their weekend is ruined and a plan needs to be though up especially what's in his rugsack.
What a book full of twists, full of action, full of mind blowing chapter's, the best from this author.

This one is my favourite so far. Each book I read from Keri Beevis seems to get better and better and this one is no exception.
Following a group of old friends, together for a birthday reunion, we get a bit of romance, a bit of death and a fair bit of backstabbing.
The characters store relatable and entertaining, some are very likeable and the setting is beautiful yet eerie, reminiscent of every Apocalypse Now type plot and the reading pace is perfect, not too fast and definitely not too slow…
Great ending!
Can’t wait for the next one!

With Friends Like These started off a little slow and I wondered for a long while how long it would take to get to the main conflict within the story. Six former college friends head off to Scotland to spend a weekend reunion together in the woods near a loch. One of the friends accidentally hits a stranded motorist on the way in a drinking/driving situation. Someone suggests they bury the man or hide his body in some way. They find cash, a mask, and a knife in the near-dead man's belongings. And this is when all the questions begin to surface. This is a thrill-ride of frenemies with deep, dark past secrets, and the sheer will they possess to best each other at every turn. I'd say that's the main flaw in the majority of the characters in this story. Someone in their group set this entire ordeal up, but they don't know who. And now everything is completely out of control with the newly dead motorist and his backpack of cash and other items. Who can be trusted...with friends like these?

I'd like to thank Netgalley and the publisher, Bloodhound Books, as well as Dreamscape Media for providing me with the audiobook to With Friends Like These. I definitely recommend it! I'm interested in reading more from Keri Beevis after listening to this audiobook.

With Friends Like These hit fitting title gold. This group of people is not only dysfunctional but actually toxic. The only thing worse than their friendship is their choice-making skills.

This thriller is very gritty and pretty much read as if Guy Ritchie had written the script for an episode of Law and Order. Although it wasn't what I expected, I think many people will like it. But if you, like me, were expecting a more psychological closed-circle thriller, I would say skip it.

What saved the book for me was Joshua Manning's narration. His pace definitely did the book great service.

Goodreads Rating: 4.06

I requested a digital advanced readers copy from NetGalley and Dreamscape Media and providing my opinion voluntarily and unbiased.

Synopsis: Billy Maguire, on his way to Scotland for a reunion with his university friends, stops for a few drinks en route. Then, on the deserted roads leading to the isolated location, he runs over a pedestrian. The man is alive. But the man dies—and Billy panics. He begs his friends for help. There is tension within the group at first, but when the dead man’s ID reveals him to be a notorious criminal named Dougie McCool, they want to dispose of body. The only problem is that some dangerous men are looking for McCool—including his brother, who is willing to brutally exploit every vulnerability in this circle of friends to get what he wants. But will he succeed?

My Thoughts: This was a first time author for me, but it will not be my last. The narrator was amazing, the only thing I would like to have seen is a female and male narrator, it would have enhanced it. The characters were well developed, they were flawed (intentionally), had layers of depth, a mysterious aspect, and complicated relationships. Some of the characters were likable, while others I had this love/hate relationship with. The author’s writing style had layers of complexity, was thrilling, provided a sense of uneasiness, and was just brilliantly written. The author does a great job building the characters, having a twisty plot followed by other twists and just wrapped up in an amazing ending. There was a good amount of secrets, lies, betrayals, and resentments. The setting of this book worked so well, Scotland for a reunion with a dead body, what could go wrong?? I highly recommend you purchase this book that was released last month.

When a group of friends are invited to a reunion/birthday party in a remote area of Scotland, they get a lot more than they bargained for.

My Thoughts

The first 20 minutes or so I thought I might have to do a DNF because I wasn’t enjoying the narrator’s voice. This is a ME problem because men doing women’s voices is usually so cringe but as the story went on, I was compelled to listen and I finished in one day.

Billy, the shallowest member of the group hits a pedestrian on his way to the reunion. He’s drunk and panics, so he puts the guy in the back seat and decides to let his friends help him. When he arrives to the cottage, the man is dead and this sets the tone for the entire book. Going through the man’s belongings, they find his ID and a stack of cash. A quick google search reveals the man as a well-known thug with a criminal family. This family knows he is missing and knows he’s been to the cottage. What will the friends do when the gang comes looking for him and the missing money?

WFLT starts off action-packed right off the bat. There’s a lot of characters to keep track of but not so many that I had to map them out, ha, anyways they all have secrets, hidden agendas and a lot of inner resentment towards each other that fuels the story forward and has a lot to do with some of the bigger plot twists.

This is really well-written and I enjoyed it immensely! This is my first book by Keri but I’ll be looking in to her backlist as soon as I’m done here.

Narration: Joshua Manning narrates and he does a spectacular job, especially with that of the men and the different accents – Scottish brogue, English etc … but also with switching vocals between the men. My slight criticism comes only when men do women’s voices but that has nothing to do with Mr. Manning. He’s a fine narrator and I’d listen to him again, gladly.

My thanks to @Dreamscape_Media for this gifted ALC.

Another great book from Keri Beevis.
Six friends arrange to meet in Scotland to celebrate a Birthday.
Billy hits a man whilst driving to the house and realises he’s killed him. When he arrives at the house he asks his friends for help as he’d stopped for a few pints and won’t call the Police.
Things soon get out of hand and with the dead man’s brother banging down the door, armed with a shotgun, the group realise they’re in trouble.
This is a gripping thriller that will have you racing through the pages.
Thanks to Bloodhound Books for the opportunity to read this book.

** spoiler alert ** So you're telling me that the ex-fiance set up a trip to get revenge on his ex-fiance and friend by hiring someone to come and ROB ALL OF THEM? LIke what kind of person has ALL of their friends beat up and robbed just to get revenge on two of them?
And while that is all playing out they are hiding a dead body who thier friend murdered while drunk driving? And they all agreed to do it? And the brothers who show up to friend the missing guy wouldn't call the cops to start with?

I did love the ending because boy oh boy did Griffin deserve for all of that to happen to him.

Dark and twisted, this comedic thriller looks at a group of friends from university who get together for a reunion at a remote and secluded Scottish location, and things go downhill fast. This group of supposed friends clearly have no loyalty to each other. And after things start happening, it was easy to predict what the characters reactions would be. For the most part, most of the characters are unlikable, but I think that was deliberate on the part of the author because it made you root for the calamity to befall them. I did like the chapters revealing their backgrounds in uni and seeing how their friendships were formed and how they went wrong along the way. That being said, I don’t understand why they’d be willing to get together again for a reunion when there was no love lost between them.
On the way to the reunion, after he’s had a few drinks, Billy hits a guy with his car and puts him in his car thinking he will take him to the hospital, but while he’s on the way, the man dies so Billy takes him to the house where they’re having the reunion and they decide to cover for Billy when they discover the guy he hit is a known criminal. But little do they know, the guys brother has a tracker on him and comes looking for him and the money he was carrying. The friends all turn on each other when the heat is on.
I liked the audiobook narration of this story. The Scottish accent really helped set the scene of the story.
Thanks to Bloodhound Books and NetGalley for this audiobook arc in exchange for my review.
