Based on the bestselling File Structures, Second Edition, this book takes an object-oriented approach to the study of file structures. It allows students and professionals to acquire the fundamental tools needed to design intelligent, cost-effective, and appropriate solutions to file structure problems. The book begins by presenting the software and hardware characteristics that combine to make file structure design important to application development. It continues with a thorough treatment of the tools that support effective use of files for storing and retrieving information. This book teaches design by putting the hands-on work of constructing and running programs at the center of the learning process. By following the many programming examples included in the book and in the exercise sets, readers will gain a significant understanding of object-oriented techniques and will see how C++ can be an effective software development tool.
I picked up File Structures on a whim and ended up reading it in a parked car because I couldn't wait to get inside. Michael J. Folk has a way of making a plain kitchen feel like a courtroom, especially in the scene where a mother quietly counts the cash in her purse while her son lies to her face about where it went. Nobody yells, and it's still brutal. What bugged me was the ex-boyfriend subplot, which felt like it got dropped in to hit a word count. Who this is for: readers who like family tension with the volume turned down. Who should pass: anybody who needs a big blowup to feel something.
What got me about File Structures: An Object-Oriented Approach with C++ was the pacing, which is brutal in the best way. Folk, Michael J. barely lets you breathe, and I tore through it on a Saturday with cold coffee next to me. The prose is lean and a little cold, so if you want gorgeous sentences, look elsewhere. If you want to be dragged through a story by the collar, this is it. Pass if you want to linger.
Persistent storage is practical real world value addition to theoretical foundation of data structures. The authors approach exhibits right usage of object oriented paradigm that's often thrust wrongly on constructing apps.
