Jeremy Jenkins’ mother was a drug addict, his foster families abusive. The man he thought the love of his life had just betrayed him in the most catastrophic way possible.

He stabbed him.

On the night of his death, he cries out. Jeremy doesn’t seek help or forgiveness, he craves revenge. In answer to his plea, Ozark appears before him with the promise of a future he never could have imagined.

Oz is a demon older than time. Feeding off revenge, he’s spent millennia reaping and selling souls. The contracts are simple: Oz helps someone achieve revenge, then hell gains another soul.

Jeremy takes the deal, but when the time comes, Oz releasing him to join the faceless ranks of hell’s ghouls is one more betrayal in a long line. He yearns to join the gorgeous demon for eternity; by his side and in his bed. Desperately searching for a loophole, he’s running out of time. Can Jeremy outwit those who fight against him and bend the laws of hell to keep the dangerous demon who’s captured his heart? Or is he destined to die as he lived?

Betrayed and alone.

"Dying took longer than Jeremy imagined it would."

Well, this was a different E.M. Denning experience! If you are already a fan, you may find Best Served Cold an unexpected read 😊.

This is quite a dark, paranormal romance read so be prepared for lots of blood, torture, death and general demonic badness. As always, check out the author's TWs if in any doubt.

This is a story of revenge and passion. And a truck-load of steam!🌶️

Ozark (Oz) is a Prince of Hell, with a passion for revenge. He hears Jeremy's unspoken plea as he is dying and steps in to save him and claim his soul, in exchange for providing him revenge on all those who have hurt and abused him, and Jeremy is happy to pay that price.

Jeremy has had a terrible life and is determined to make everyone pay for the hell on earth he has suffered. He draws on Oz's energy and demonic abilities to bring that to fruition, but finds himself falling for the demon along the way. And suddenly the thought of eternity in the halls of hell without Oz doesn't seem such a great deal....

Best Served Cold sucked me in right from the first page! Sooo freakin good! Dark, gritty and twisted! Jeremy is betrayed in the worst way, but he gets his revenge. Oz is a demon and Jeremy wants him. Oz and Jeremy are pure fire, their chemistry is off the charts. Fantastic world building. Overall, a phenomenal read. Fantastic develop character, well written with great pacing. Highly recommend.

DNF @ 55%.

This started out fun… but from Chapter 5 on, it’s more sex than revenge. In fact, the first half of this book was about 25% sex scenes. There’s a ration of 5:1 for sex scenes to revenge scenes in a book about revenge. ‘Dick’ is used 33x in the book, ‘cock’ is used 100x.

I was going to just stick with it, to see if the revenge plot ever progressed beyond thinking about it and then getting derailed to get railed… but then I peeked at the author’s note at the end.

As for Oz and Jeremy… my alpha reader bestie, Kate Hawthorne, whom this book would not exist without, has been trying to convince me to write a sequel… Most of the time she gets her way.

Followed by a whole acknowledgment that is 80% thanking her BFF Kate.Well… if Kate Hawthorne is EM Denning’s “alpha reader bestie”, that really says it all for me. I’ll just be sliding EM Denning over to my DNR list, where she can hang out with her BFF.

I've read only a couple of books by EM before, and while they stated in the author's note that this was outside the usual, I definitely think it is a good one. This is very much not a story of redemption, in any way. Most characters are irredeemable, and the one who is doesn't want it. After raw deal after raw deal, enough has to be somewhere, and so far Jeremy found it it murder. His own murder.
It is dark, and compelling, and really cool. I enjoyed it.

The title says it all

The title says it all for sure. Sometimes you feel like reading a story so sweet that you need to brush your teeth after reading it and, well, then there are times when you feel like reading something the complete opposite of that. This book is definitely one of the latter type. Luckily I was just in the mood for something like this. E. M. Denning was obviously also in this mood because she doesn’t normally write books about characters like Oz and Jeremy. I am so glad she did because as much as I have liked all of the other books I have read by her I was absolutely blown away by the imagination behind this tale of love and revenge. Read the warnings but if it still seems like something you might like then I highly recommend this book to you.

Wow, this book doesn't pull any punches. From the first scene until the end, you realize this isn't a typical paranormal romance. Jeremy is looking to get revenge on those who wronged him and while Oz feeds off the need for that exact strong desire, Jeremy calls to him in ways he didn't expect. The way Oz and Jeremy incorporate their obvious inferno of yearning for each other while Oz finds a way to keep Jeremy for himself, it's a fast paced read and I for one, couldn't wait to see what happened. A great read with perfect world building!

The best yet!

This is the best book I have read by this author. It had me alternately furious, weeping, cheering, and a hard won, fully satisfying HEA. I could not put it down. I read it on KU and immediately had to buy it when I was done. I am utterly salivating for a sequel.

I can only hope Michael Dean isn't hired for the audio.

A Joyfully Jay review.

3.5 stars

Best Served Cold is an intense, revenge-fueled romance. It is very different from E.M. Denning’s usual style and you need to be all right with super dark themes and some intense violence and gore. But I think the set up here is really interesting and I found this one to be a unique story.

The book opens with Jeremy literally being stabbed to death. He is almost resigned and accepting, as he has been beaten down by life and failed by everyone who was supposed to care about and protect him. Part of Jeremy is almost ready to just have it all end. But there is a spark there of something more, of something angry, and his imminent death finally frees Jeremy to let out those feelings of just wanting to destroy everyone who ever hurt him. And that is exactly what Oz gives him a chance to do.

Definitely a different story than normal for this author but still a great one. Jeremy dies with anger in his heart, wanting revenge for the way his life turned out. Oz, a Prince of hell, hears his cry of revenge and keeps him alive with a contract so he can. Once Jeremy realizes his new “power” in Oz, he goes all out in his revenge. This isn’t a light, fluffy, feel good, redemption story. This is an all out hate and pay back for the people who hurt Jeremy. It does have a HEA for Jeremy and Oz though, so it did have some love in there after all…lol!!

One of my favorite books by this author is called Murder Husbands, so I knew I had to check out her dark romance featuring a literal demon. I was not disappointed, and this book is a perfect way to enjoy the spookiest month of the year. Note, however, that I primarily call this a dark romance, not paranormal, despite the fantastical characters and content. I appreciate that Denning goes all in instead of shying away from Oz and Jeremy’s true potential.

Denning leans into enough of the paranormal tropes so that we do mostly know what we’re getting when it comes to demon Oz. Then, she twists the details just enough to give us a character entirely unexpected, especially since he’s also self-aware enough to understand the problem he’s created for himself. His narration toes the line of overdramatic, but then again, everything about this book, from the external events to the incredibly spicy bits, is unrepentantly overdramatic enough to live up to every expectation.

Neither the actual revenge acts nor the aforementioned spiciness is for the faint of heart, but Jeremy’s sheer joy at both balances everything nicely. Watching him go darker should not be so much fun, but he more than deserves this extra bit of afterlife, since his actual life was never quite up to snuff.

I did not expect the ending to be as heart-wrenching as it was. Denning sneaks a true romance into all the gore and steam, instead of relying on those to prop up a less emotional connection between two truly fascinating characters. The twist at the end is the perfect highlight of the subtle world-building she treats us to along the way.

Again, this book will not be for everyone, and that’s okay. But I admire Denning for tackling such a project to its fullest extent, and for some readers, Oz and Jeremy are for us. If you think you might be one of them, don’t miss this excellent Halloween treat.

The concept of this book is genuinely intriguing. I don’t think I’ve ever read anything quite like it—which is saying something, considering I consume an unhealthy amount of paranormal romance and fantasy. But that’s beside the point.

The actual revenge plot, though? It felt more like shock value than anything else. I was expecting something a bit more… emotionally satisfying? Instead, it leaned hard into the dramatic flair without much depth.

Also, I would’ve loved a bit more emotional connection between the main characters. It was heavy on the steam—and I mean way too heavy. (Never thought I’d say this, but there was too much sex in this book. There, I said it.) Like, yes, we get it. They’re a perfect match: for Jeremy, it’s finally being someone’s absolute choice; for Oz, it’s Jeremy’s darkness and thirst for vengeance. That’s cute and all, but where’s the actual emotional glue? Something definitely felt missing.

The ending felt a little anticlimactic, honestly. All the problems—and all the people who caused said problems—were wrapped up way too neatly and quickly. Especially the person who kicked off Jeremy’s whole vendetta. That part felt like an afterthought.

Which is kind of ironic, considering the opening and the first act of revenge were seriously gruesome. Like, brace-yourself gruesome. But then… it turned into a steamy romance novel with a side of angst.

This book dripped with darkness. It’s a twisted love story with characters bent on revenge and mayhem. Every word brings the reader further and further into the demented world EM Denning has created.

I love Jeremy. My heart broke for him and yet how he remade himself with Oz’s help…There’s something so underlying compelling about him. He’s a fighter. Far more than anyone could expect. He’s a perfect match for Oz. Oz may have been the demon, but Jeremy is diabolical.

The chemistry between Jeremy and Oz is off the charts. In the midst of terror and blood, there are these two, beautiful in their darkness. Holy heck did EM Denning bring it.

The world building was spot on. It kept me engaged with the story and I felt like I was right there. I couldn’t put the book down.

This is a bloody, demented, and yet perfect story. It’s the kind where nightmares and desire come together with love balancing it out. It also proves, once again, that EM Denning can write anything she wants and I am here for it.

5 stars for an emotionally captivating, dark, and passionate read!

Best Served Cold by author E.M. Denning is a story that I am on the fence about. I loved it in places, and in others, I was very disconnected from the characters. This story is told in dual POV which works well for this type of story.

When we meet Jeremy, he has had the snot beaten out of him. He is in a hospital alive when he really should be dead. He doesn’t remember but he made a deal, this deal will get him revenge for what was done to him, but will it bring him so much more?

Oz is a demon. He is kind of cynical. Leaning more on the sin side of that. He feeds on revenge. He saves Jeremy but at a price.

These two are the most unlikely to fall in love, but they do. I feel this story would have been better as a series, there is something I cannot put my finger on that really doesn’t work for me. It is a good story just needs more connections.

Best Served Cold is some of EM Denning’s best writing. It’s dark, gory, and oh so good. I was so excited when it was announced that this book was coming because I love everything this author writes and this is no exception, if I’m being honest it might be some of the best writing I’ve read from her.

Jeremy is lost and hurting and he’s saved by a demon when he needs someone to love him the most. That someone turns out to be Oz, a demon of revenge who helps Jeremy find the dark corners of his soul and come into his full potential.

The chemistry between these two is off the charts. There’s a connection between the two of them, even when Oz tries to fight it because he doesn’t know how to keep Jeremy. Watching Oz embrace what he feels for Jeremy and fight for him is great. He evolves from a demon who embraces the revenge of those he collects to someone who wants to keep the sad and beautiful human safe. But through it all he doesn’t stop being a demon. Just a demon who’s a bit more in touch with his feelings. And that is great writing.

Jeremy is such an amazing character. He’s so lonely. All he’s ever wanted was someone to love him. It took meeting a literal demon and embracing his hidden bloodlust to find it. And what a thirst for blood it is. Jeremy has no problems getting revenge and he’s very creative in how he goes about it. Some of the scenes are very dark and I did not expect that from EM Denning. I loved every bit of the darkness in this book, even the parts that go further than I thought they would go. But that’s what makes it so good, you don’t expect an author like EM Denning to write this type of book and she takes you for a ride with just how well she can write dark.

Everything about this book was perfection. From the cinnamon roll that is Jeremy. To Oz being the best demon to ever demon. To all the yummy goodness one could ask for. Mix it all up with all the relationship feels of an EM Denning book and you have the perfect read.

This book is a departure from what the author typically writes and I loved it! I enjoy a good dark PNR story. This one certainly fits. Please be aware of the triggers.

Everyone has failed Jeremy in life. His life has not been a pleasant one but his death set him free. Free from whatever held him back and kept him from fighting back. But Oz appeared to him in his last torturous moments and offered him the chance of revenge for the cost of his soul. This book is delightfully twisted and the characters are not what you would immediately expect. Oz helps Jeremy get his revenge but what happens when they don’t want their contract to end? It really is a match made somewhere the opposite of heaven.

I loved this book. I knew from the blurb that it was going to be one of the best things I'd read all year. Jeremy is a young man who has had an unfortunate life, that ends in the person who is supposed to love him killing him. Filled with so much anger and a thirst for revenge, Ozark, a demon who thrives on revenge makes a deal with Jeremy: help him with revenge in return for his soul. As the two frow closer and get revenge on all the people who wronged Jeremy, they grow reluctant to complete the contract. As time runs out, the against it to find a loophole for the deal that they struck. Along their journey to love, they have to fight forces that want to keep them apart. I loved this book. I couldn't put it down. It was just that good. Five stars. Definitely recommend.

Different from the other books but good

3.5 stars rounded up.

I have read a few other books by E. M. Denning and they were quite different from this one. I did like this one.

Jeremy makes a deal with a Demon, Oz. Jeremy wants revenge for the people who wronged/hurt him. Oz is a demon that thrives on revenge so I made the contract as Jeremy was dying.

Jeremy and Oz had an interesting relationship. I liked them together. The attraction was pretty instant and their relationship moved quickly. It had a nice HEA. You may want to check the TW as this is a bit darker and more violent then other books written by this author. I did not mind that at all here it fit Oz and Jeremy perfectly.

Jeremy and Oz 🔥
4 Stars ⭐️

Well Hell, this was an unexpectedly dark and very delicious little read 🔥🔥🔥🔥 If you appreciate a little darkness in your book life, this is a must read! I ate this one up like I was starving 😋 from the moment they met demon Oz and human Jeremy share the darkest of dark and sexiest of sexy connection and it builds from there....if your expecting sweet...nope...if your expecting a traditional love story...nope! What you will get instead, is an extremely twisted....very hot and downright smoldering tale of a battered human with a score to settle and an unapologetic demon with the powers to help him get his revenge. I would most definitely recommend!

I knew that this was a dark romance and there was plenty about it that was just that. But the relationship that develops between Oz and Jeremy was strangely touching. Each man, if you can call Oz a man, brought something to the other that he needed and did not expect to get. Yes, this story started off bleakly. Jeremy's difficult life was being taken from him by his abusive partner. And making a deal with a demon who thrives on revenge does not usually seem like it will be the start of something good. But it was for Jeremy and for Oz. I really liked their story. Made me feel a little naughty that I was rooting for them to be able to stay together. Which was kind of cool.

This is my first read by E.M. Denning, and it did not disappoint!

This is a dark paranormal romance, so definitely read the TWs before starting this book. Some that stood out were blood, torture, and death.

This book has a TON of steam, so be ready for that. There was not a lack of sex scenes in this story.

The story follows Oz, the prince of hell, and Jeremy who offers his souls to Oz in exchange for exacting revenge on everyone who had ever hurt him. Of course they end up falling for each other!

While this is a dark read, I really enjoyed their story. I will definitely be reading more by this author in the future! 3.5/5 🌟

Dark, gory excellence

This is not my normal fare, although I do love a good dark romance. This is revenge porn done well, joyous in it's revelry in the darkest sides of human (and demon) nature.

What I loved most is that Jeremy, from the time he wakes up in hospital, is never a victim. He has his own goals and his own plans and he sets out to achieve them with gleeful efficiency. He attacks his vengeance plan with gusto, embracing his violent lusts spectacularly.

This is dual POV with very high heat, medium to high gore and violence, and content warnings for mention of SA, family violence, drug use.

Loved it, loved it, loved it! It was a wickedly good paced and written story that was a truly amazing romance story!

Epic for me the way the characters just jumped off the page and you were immersed in their world!

Jeremy is a guy who has had a not great life and upon death meets the perfect “man”!

Oz is a demon that revels in Jeremy’s need of revenge and falls in a way he never experienced before!

Together they light fires in each other hotter then hell and the burn is epic!

We get to meet some characters that are lots of fun, not so fun and you even get some unexpected moments that will leave you thinking “clever man truly clever”!

I am so glad I read this story! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The last E.M. Denning book I read was a sweet, low angst, romance story which I adored. Yeah, this is not that!! This book is deliciously dark. And E.M. Denning nailed it. This story is about how Jeremy gets his revenge and how the demon he made a deal with, Oz, eats it all up. I thoroughly enjoyed the interactions between Jeremy and Oz, but also enjoyed the development of the other demons in this book. If you are looking for something a little different, want something on the darker side, this is definitely for you!

This is the story of Jeremy and Oz. Please read the trigger warnings as this is a dark romance. This book is extremely entertaining. I loved the characters who shows such a realness that you can't help but like them and feel for them. I love the little twist/problem that Oz gave himself by falling for Jeremy. The world created by the author is fantastic, though gory and dark. The action and scorching chemistry keeps you riveted. Definitely recommended.

I received this book as an Arc and I am happily reviewing it voluntarily.

Jeremy and Ozark (Oz)’s story has darkness, grit, vengeance and heat— as you might expect from a connection born out of a deal between a demon and a mortal in which a soul is exchanged for the promise of revenge. It’s dark and twisty and ruthless and full of steam and a distinct lack of softness or remorse. There’s no redemption to be found here, for mortal or demon, but there is a ton of chemistry and an easy narrative to get caught up in.

Are we sure EM Demming wrote this??? Just kidding, I know it was a labor of love for Kate. But OMG please write more stories like this!!! I have been into the dark and twisty romances lately and this was just perfect. Jeremy was broken down by every person he was ever supposed to trust. At the brink of death Oz offers him an opportunity for revenge and boy does he take it. The steam is off the charts and I got to play out some fun revenge fantasies! The ending was just perfect and I’d love to read just about anything else set in this world. 🌶🌶🌶🌶🌶🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤

OMG!! Another 'killer' book by EM Denning! If you.like demons, spice, and revenge...best served cold *wink wink*...this one's for you! Oz and Jeremy are adorable and while this book is dark and gory, it never crosses the line into *too* dark...for me at least! There are triggers so mind them if you have any!! 5 stars!!

This book is the definition of a page turner! I am not going to give much of the plot away because that is the magic of the story. I will say that this book is much darker than other books by this author, but that makes it the perfect read for this season and for those of us who enjoy revenge and violence for a genuine reason! OZ and Jeremy have hot as hell chemistry, yes pun intended! Not light and fluffy, but deep and real! Oz was my demon hero!
