FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD...

. . . was where Ann Forties longed to be, not trapped at a tiresome party. And when she found herself under the eye of one gorgeous attorney, all her instincts screamed, "Run!" Once badly burned, she now steered clear of men, especially powerhouse types like Clint Burrows. Surely such a mover and shaker couldn't be fascinated by her?

But Clint didn't feel like a hotshot. He felt like a man in love. Ann's gypsy beauty had bewitched him, and he plotted to assail her defenses with intoxicating passion. He knew she would cling fiercely to her solitary existence, but he'd handled tough cases before. This was one he way determined not to lose ....

I know I've read some romances by Lass Small years ago, but for the life of me I can't remember what the titles were. This was pre-GRs and pre-Kindle. I just remember her romances were hard to find.

Ms. Small passed away a decade ago. In the 1980s, when she was in her 60s, she started writing for the Silhouette Desire line. I often thought she poured more development into her plots.

~~~~~
Ann Forbes was young and very naive when she married her husband. It ended in divorce and from then on, she was put off of men. She rarely went anywhere, but her artistic skills flourished. She became a well-known if not secretive painter.
When Contact opens, Ann's sister convinces her to go to a party. She is uncomfortable and is ready to leave, when a man she saw staring at her, comes over and wants to be introduced. A sought-after bachelor, Clint Burrows is a well-known attorney.
Clint is not stalker-ish, but he does whatever he can to have a relationship with Ann. He learns of the emotional abuse her ex caused her to undergo. He is patient and falls in love with her. As you can guess, Ann has some hurdles to pass.
There are plenty of better romances, but if you like a persistent if not likeable beta hero who falls in love first, give this story a go.
