Indy Savage, cop's daughter, rock chick and used bookstore owner, has been in love with Lee Nightingale, once bad boy, now the man behind Nightingale Investigations, since she was five years old. Complicating matters, Lee has decided he's interested, Indy's decided she's not. But she can't seem to keep Lee out of her life when she's repeatedly stun gunned, kidnapped and there are car bombs exploding (not to mention she's finding dead bodies).

Kristen Ashley was born in Gary, Indiana, USA. She nearly killed her mother and herself making it into the world, seeing as she had the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck (already attempting to accessorise and she hadn't taken her first breath!).

Kristen grew up in Brownsburg, Indiana but has lived in Denver, Colorado and the West Country of England. Thus she has been blessed to have friends and family around the globe. Her posse is loopy (to say the least) but loopy is good when you want to write.

Kristen was raised in a house with a large and multi-generational family. They lived on a very small farm in a small town in the heartland and existed amongst the strains of Glenn Miller, The Everly Brothers, REO Speedwagon and Whitesnake (and the wardrobes that matched).

Needless to say, growing up in a house full of music, clothes and love was a good way to grow up.

And as she keeps growing up, it keeps getting better.

I guess this is one of those books that everyone loved but me.

I tried! I really tried to love this book. Then I tried to like this book. Then I just tried to finish this book. Unfortunately, Indy, the heroine, ruined the story for me.

I'm honestly at a loss trying to express my sheer annoyance, disapointment, and frankly, total embarrassment with Indy's character. Not only was she flat out nuts, had one too many TSTL (to stupid to live) moments, and was beyond wishy washy; but, she was also the stupidest heroine I've read to date. I mean, the girl needed a basic refresher course in 6th grade sexual education for heaven sakes!

The only good that came from this book, in my opinion, was the amazing and sexy hero, Lee Nightingale. I loved his charcter and name! Other than that, I did not enjoy this story. I hope I'll have better luck with the rest of the series.

This was my first Kristen Ashley experience, and I am officially confused.

Let me explain.

1) You are finally together with the man you've been in love with your entire life. Do you flirt with his colleagues and friends in front of him?

a) Hell to the no, why would I do that?
b) Hell yeah, momma likes some action!
c) N/A

2) You've been shot at and kidnapped. Your badass boyfriend (who has ties with the police and the mob) asks you to let him handle the situation and refrain from doing something stupid because the guys you're dealing with are super dangerous (and creepy). You:

a) Do as he told because you don't want to die young
b) Do the exact opposite, attack assassins and get kidnapped again while you pretend to be a ninja because no man will tell you what to do (but at the same time when things get serious, you wait impatiently for him to come rescue you and clean up your mess)
c) N/A

If you answered at least one a) like me, then Indy will annoy the crap out of you!

“My life had been simple a day ago. Work, coffee, rock 'n' roll. Now I was being shot at, dragged around by bad guys and propositioned by the love of my life who I had decided I didn't want anymore.”

That's what happens in Rock Chick! Stolen diamonds, hitmen, icky and slightly insane crime lords and Indy in the middle, because she was at the wrong place the wrong time. But this unfortunate situation brings her closer to Lee, the man she's been in love with since she was 5 years old and rejected her repeatedly, who has made up his mind and wants to be with her at all costs. And is also involved in this bizarre diamonds hunt. Indy tries to resist Lee's charms and solve the case on her own, because she is a Rock Chick and doesn't like staying behind. Even if that means discovering dead bodies, being kidnapped three times and endangering everyone near her.
“I haven’t been avoiding you.”
“You’re lying. The last time we were both at dinner, you got up in the middle of Mom’s fajita presentation and said you forgot to feed your cat.”
“You don’t have a cat.”

I really liked this book, I can't deny that! It was funny, with a generous dose of action and sexual tension, and I would rate it higher if it wasn't this long and if Indy stopped acting like a 6 years old. Yes she was cool and strong-minded but man! there were times I wanted to throttle her! She argued for the sake of arguing and had the weird belief that being a Rock Chick means never listen to the voice of reason because this voice belongs to a man, a hunk-a-licous man I may say, who wants to protect you because you're batshit crazy! I listen to metal and enjoy a decent headbanging once in a while but I don't stun gun people in bar fights and I don't play detective when I'm not even sure what's at stake (besides my life, of course!).

Setting aside Indy's shenanigans, I did enjoy the story! There were plenty of interesting and hilarious characters, and Lee had me drooling because holy.hawt.alpha.male.alert! He was cocky and badass and very, very yummy! And patient, anyone else would run away from Indy faster than Road Runner! Their scenes were loaded with sizzling tension, and I loved the fact that they had history together and knew each other so well. I would not mind spending the rest of my days in Lee's cabin, just saying!
“I don’t get a taste of you soon, I’m givin’ up the search and takin’ you to my cabin in Grand Lake. No phones, no cell coverage, no buzzer. Anyone knocks on the door and I’m shooting them.”

Overall, I think I'll give Kristen Ashley another shot, but only if I get some guarantee that I will not want to murder her female characters!

Pure. Freaking. Gold. LOVE LOVE LOVED this hilarious, romantic, action-packed book!!

This is probably the most all-out FUN book I've ever read! I mean, how can you not love a book about a smart, independent, sassy heroine and her Badass Extraordinaire hero getting together? huh? Its impossible not to I tell you. Impossible! :)

I cannot possibly gush enough. This book was BRILLIANT!! It had me flipping pages like mad, grinning endlessly and laughing and squeeing out-loud more times than I could count!

Its insanely well-written. Kristen Ashley has an absolute gift with words. Her writing style is so effortless, you feel like you are right in the head of the main character.

The book is never boring, there is no stupidity from the characters, and the drama in the background compliments the character development of the story rather than complicates it. Its a delicate balance that Ms. Ashley has really perfected!

The story is about India "Indy" Savage and Liam "Lee" Nightingale. Indy's been in love with Lee since she was five. For reasons' you'll learn about, he couldn't admit he felt the same way until very recently. But they basically grew up together, then Lee went off to join the Army/Special Ops and went from badboy to Badass Extraordinaire and now runs his own detective agency. Fast track to present day, Indy's friend gets involved in some very shady business involving some illegally grown plants and million dollar diamonds, resulting in people shooting at them with guns and end up being helped out of the predicament by Lee... who of course uses this as the perfect stepping stone to finally get together with Indy.

"What was he playing at?
He told me.
And he told me bluntly.
“I do this thing for Rosie, you sleep with me"
I stared at him, open-mouthed and in stunned silence.
I did, of course, understand what he meant but he explained further.
"Not like last night, we'll both be naked and sexual acts will be performed."
My expression didn't change except maybe my mouth opened wider.
"I'll expect your participation."
Holy shit.
"Your avid participation."
Dear Lord in Heaven.
Eventually, I whispered, "You must be joking."
He shook his head and watched me.
I dropped my eyes, unable to hold his stare.
"I think I need more coffee,""

Oooooo Lee. Liam freaking Nightingale. I love you. There I said it. He's a wonderful hero - all delicious badass, uberly possessive, don't-fuck-with-me-or-my-woman, Alpha male. He is YUMMY!!

[conversation with her delightful gay neighbour]
"Girlie, he is fine. He's fine times twelve. He's the definition of fine."
"I've been in love with him since I was five," I told Tod.
"I'm in love with him now. I want to have his children, Tod told me."

I loved that he doesn't play games, is open and honest about his feelings and thoughts even to the point of being cocky but never hides anything. What you see is what you get. Oh, and did I mention he's totally hot?

"Jesus," he buried his face in my neck. "There's nothin' better in the world than hearing you say my name when I'm inside you." He slid in deeper, filling me. "I've been waiting years to be right here."

And Indy was feisty, fun-loving, sassy, takes-no-orders-and-won't-back-down-from-anything, funny, not at all annoying and totally lovable!

And I loved that they had known each other their whole lives instead of just meeting and hooking up. Its gave a familiarity to the characters - and made their fast relationship much more believable.

"I like that we have history and our kids will have a big family and share that history because there was never a time when their Mom and Dad weren't together." ~Lee

This book is full of typical KA fun - there are kidnappings galore, car chases, steamy bedroom scenes, swoony moments, outright hilarious moments, drag queen performances, shoot-outs, explosions, a seriously epic food-fight, and of course, a wonderful love story. Also, we get introduced to a bunch of wonderful side-characters who will be heavily featured in the rest of the series :)

I absolutely ADORED this book!! and I recommend it to everybody and anybody! Run and get this book - you won't regret it!!

Here's how I see Lee and Indy:

Controlling asshole + TSTL heroine + plot nonsense + stereotypes everywhere = I'm calling bullshit.

For real, this book takes the crappy romance at a whole new level - I could be almost bewildered if I wasn't so pissed. You know what? I read the full book and I don't get it. I might write a full review when I calm down. Someday. In the meantime, I must introduce some facts to provide further information to explain my rating, because I do realize that I'm in a huge minority here.

Before I start, what you need to know is the fact that Indy knows Lee from her childhood and loved him almost always since, except for the 10 previous years. Why is it important? Why, because it's used as the perfect excuse to explain that there isn't ANY character development and/or relationship growth.

Controlling asshole : Okay OKAY I get it, I get it. Here's a handsome wild man, a tad mysterious, drop-dead sexy, who Indy loves since she's 5, who carries a gun and is protective, who's...

WHATEVER. I don't care about all these wonderful qualities, because :

1) He is repeatedly violent in his moves : he pushes her, catches her wrist, "hook [her] around the back of the neck with enough force to send [her] slamming into him". Wow, how romantic.

2) He wants to control every one of her actions, starting with their relationship : "This is happening between you and me," he threatened." Indeed Indy repeats several times that she is SCARED by him and his controlling behavior. What bothered me the most is the fact that the TSTL behavior of the heroine is used as an EXCUSE to explain Lee's reactions and to make the reader believe that it's okay. Nope. It's not okay to handcuff your girlfriend at the bed because you don't want her to go out. And it's certainly not okay to FORBID your girlfriend to wear what she wants to wear. Oh, but don't worry, Lee has an asshole as a friend who agrees with him.

"For what it's worth, I'm with Lee. If you were my woman, there's no fuckin' way I'd let you out of the house wearin' that."

3) He is a jealous prick. Now, a little jealousy can be great, but come on. Lee overreacts completely when Indy talks to another guy.

TSTL heroine : basically, Indy is the stupid chick in scary movie. Yeah, you got it, the one we can't help but yell at to STAY IN THE FUCKING HOUSE! To sum up, she is kidnapped 3 times, goes out every time someone tells her to stay hidden despite the really bad guys who constantly shot at her, decides to investigate while she obviously shouldn't (plus, she gives her real name to every dubious person she meets : who does that??). I know some readers found her kick-ass. I'm sorry but this girl? She isn't badass. No. When I think of her, here's how I picture Indy :

What? She acts like she's 6 while she's 30.

Moreover, although in her inner monologues she complains about Lee's controlling behavior, she always gave in. EVERY. FUCKING. TIME.

PS: I almost forgot to say that she is so fucking SPECIAL that she has 3 guys fighting for her. Yep. 3.

Plot nonsense

You know what? I'm done.

So, I’ve decided to bring this book with me to Thanksgiving dinner.

Why, you ask?

Well, that’s a silly question.

I mean, I have to have something to show good ol’ Aunt Deb when I tell her that my future husband is Lee Nightingale.

Otherwise everyone will just think I’m crazy.

Which is ridiculous.

 photo tumblr_llt9njPv9H1qkyn24o1_500.gif

But enough about Lee. I’ll get to him later…

*eyebrow waggle*

I want to talk to ya guys about Kristen Ashley. This is the first novel of her that I’ve read (we’ll celebrate later)… and it’s crazy because right away, her writing FLOORED me! She has such a signature writing style that I love! It’s witty; it’s snarky; it’s sexy. And she’s just so comfy with it, know what I mean? This is an author who completely owns what she does.

 photo tumblr_lpt85qZgCT1qc49r2o1_500.gif

So onto the story…

Rock Chick in a nutshell, is about a kickass girl, Indy Savage.

Indy owns a bookstore, and her brilliant coffee-maker-guy gets into trouble. Because well, he’s a pot (as in marijuana) seller. And he makes the mistake of selling to the wrong guy, who instead of paying coffee-maker-guy in cash, pays him in diamonds. That didn’t even belong to him in the first place.

So because they don’t belong to him, coffee-maker-guy is now stuck with stolen diamonds. And one morning he shows up to work, at Indy’s bookstore, and they both get shot at… because they have stolen diamonds.

Now, Indy is the daughter of a cop. So she has plenty of people to call for help on this. But she knows there’s only really one man who can get the job done.

*BIG eyebrow waggle*

That’s right… she calls none other than THE Lee Nightingale.

 photo bac28c388b03a0aaa60e90c39fdb163c.jpg

And the reason why I call him the Lee Nightingale is because that’s exactly how Indy thinks of him, as well. See, Indy has been in love with Lee since she was five. They grew up together. But he’s always been off limits.

Plus, he’s kind of scary. As in jenny-get-your-gun scary.

So she calls him. And he, of course, helps her out. But he’s not just doing it be a good ol’ Samaritan. No no no… he’s doing it because he expects sexual favors in return. Which baffles the cruddola out of Indy, because well… Lee has always told her that he always saw her as the “little sister” type.

So now Indy’s getting shot at all of a sudden and the love of her life who she’s finally gotten over suddenly decides he wants her.

Aaaand…. I can’t tell you anymore because I’ll give everything away. ;)

So about the characters…

I loved every character in this book.

Every. Single. One.

I loved the stoner “Kevster” (his vocabulary is ha-ha-larious).
I loved Indy’s drag-queen neighbor.
And laaaaaawd, did I freaking LOVE cat-sitter Tex! (“Holy fuck, pandemonium at the gay bar!” <-------- Best. Line. Ever.)

What was so awesome about the characters is that they’re all so eclectically eccentric. But they go together so well! Bravo, Kristen Ashley… bra-freakin-vo.

So about my review…

My review is this: this is book fantastic, and if you haven’t read it yet… I really don’t know what you’re doing sitting there reading this review. This book’s got everything: guns, car chases, hysterical one-liners, a kickass heroine, and one SEXY AS HELL alpha male <----- Just remember he’s mine, okay? ;)

This is the first Kristen Ashley (henceforth KA) book I ever read, and I LOVE it.

I read the rest of the ROCK CHICK books over the following week or two, and I loved them too, but I missed Lee and Indy. The whole time. Missed them. Now that I've reread it, I feel totally vindicated b/c they are as great as I remembered.

If you're new to KA, this is a good place to start. It follows her model, Indy is one of my favorite of KA's sassy, female MCs, and Lee is the archetypal seriously badass, ex-special services, don't-worry-I-got-this guy. Their relationship is only made sweeter by the fact that Indy has loved Lee since she was five years old and he held her hand at her mother's funeral. BUH. (BUH <-----means too cute for words.)

So yeah. Really good HEA, no cliff-hanger, contemporary romance/romantic suspense.

Also--I want a stun gun.

The first book in the Rock Chick series was highly amusing, but I don't think this book is for me...

I'm kind of terrified of Kristen Ashley Fans... The author has this huge loyal following (which I was not aware of this until I started reading this) and they love these books... Like REALLY LOVE them... To the point that when I realized that this book wasn't (for me personally) living up to the hype, I got worried about how I would write this review.

With that in mind...
Ms. Ashley, and her Adoring Fans, I want you to know the following:
1. I already plan to read some other series from the talented Ms. Ashley, and see if those work better for me.
2. I will always give my honest opinion in a book review, and I never expect the whole world to agree with me.
3. Maybe one day I'll try to read the rest of the series, and something will spark which was lacking this time.

1. I am a total sucker for the "girl crush grows up to become full blown love" plot line *swoon*
2. Um... Lee Nightingale? Yes please!
3. Sassy heroine? Love that!
4. There were so many awesome secondary and tertiary characters.
5. The humor was great, even if it got down right silly at times.
6. Tex? Crazy cat man, coffee savant, looks like a serial killer? OMG yes.

1. You read the synopsis... there's a HUGE Mob plot in this book. Stolen diamonds, drugs, kidnappings, car chases, people got shot... So there should have been suspense, right? I didn't feel the suspense.
2. I was way not in love with India "Indy" Savage... She was a magnet for self-inflicted misfortune... It got old the second time she got kidnapped.
3. Indy was supposed to be thirty years old, but she had the emotional maturity of a nineteen year old, she was alarmingly sophomoric.
4. It was the mixture of immature humor and fumbled suspense which really wrecked the book for me... Consider a certain scene which began with someone being the target of a food fight (hee hee) and ended on the next page with that same person being the target of a car bomb (what?)... There were several other examples of this dichotomy, and it really diluted any threat of the Mob plot line being taken seriously.

I really, really wanted to like this book!
I am a Rock Chick. I grew up listening to Mom's tapes of 70's rockers... I've tried to burst my own eardrums listening to Led Zeplin... I had my Grunge phase, my Metal phase, and yes... Even my Goth phase (lord help us all)... With the exception of Red Hot Chili Peppers (because I couldn't get tickets) I have been to every single show that Indy mentioned throughout this book... I am STILL one of the biggest TOOL fans you will ever meet in your life... I'd trade all my book boyfriends for Maynard James Keenan, and that just how it is.
So I say again... KA fans, don't hurt me...

And to all my friends and followers,
I'm not a hater. I will never hate on a book or an author for the sake of being negative. Nor will I ever lie about my feelings about a book to pander to a particular audience. And most importantly, I would never ever unfollow/unfriend or make nasty comments to a person simply because they don't like a book that I do. I'm classy like that, and I know that Kristen Ashley & her fans are classy like that too.

4.5 Rockin’ Stars!!!!

Indy Savage has been in love with her best friends brother, Lee, since she was five years old. Indy tried for years to get Lee’s attention, but you can only be rejected so many times. Indy is now 30, and the last 10 years or so, she has ignored Lee. It’s just easier that way. She see’s him at family events etc, but overall, she doesn’t spend time with him. A crazy night at her bookshop lands her delivered right to his door. With her friend and barista, Rosie, Indy gets shot at. Rosie is in some trouble with some bad people. Indy’s bff, Ally, thinks it’s best they go to her brother Lee’s house, Lee isn’t home. Lee comes home early. And finds Indy in his bed. He has a special job, and he is willing to help Indy and Rosie... for a price...
"I think I need more coffee,"

Lee knows what he wants. He wants Indy. He has wanted Indy for a long time. He had his reasons for pushing her away when they were younger, but now, this thing between them is happening. It takes a minute for them to ‘get together’, but when they do...
“Jesus," he buried his face in my neck. "There's nothin' better in the world than hearing you say my name when I'm inside you." He slid in deeper, filling me. "I've been waiting years to be right here.”

 photo GIFY5_zpsd39c44c8.gif

Indy gets into all kinds of trouble in this book. Getting kidnapped multiple times, using the stun gun often, and just being feisty and lol hilarious- she seriously cracked me up. She is one of the most fun and mischievous heroines I’ve ever read about. Indy and Ally together are even more of a hoot. She doesn’t take crap from anyone, even Lee.

Liam ‘Lee’ Nightingale is all kinds of hot, sexy, and alpha male. I wouldn’t expect anything less from KA. He is a bad ass. Possessive in the best way.
“Lee, you’re gonna have to get over this jealous-possessiveness thing.”
“Indy, you’re gonna have to get used to the fact that I’m the jealous-possessive type.”

I just loved the two of them together. Even though Indy tried to fight it at first, they just fit together.
“He’s good at this stuff.”
“What stuff?”
“Relationship stuff. He’s a natural. It’s weird, we’re new and we’re old. I can’t get my head around it.”
“He’s shit at relationship stuff. He’s only good at it because it’s you.”
“You’re shit at it too, but only because it was never him.”

Indy and Lee were awesome, but holy hell there was a whole ensemble of FANTASTIC supporting characters! I am stoked for the rest of this series after meeting all these wonderfully unique and fun people. My absolute favorite was Tex. I hope he makes some cameo’s in the rest of the books because he was straight up awesome! Eddie, Ally, Hank, and many, many more great characters!

This was a great read, not my favorite KA book, but I still loved it! There was a TON of action, some mild suspense, romance, steam, humor and just straight up KA goodness. There were no boring parts, it was a fast paced book that didn’t drag at all. I am very much looking forward to continuing the Rock Chick series, especially since I know Eddie’s book is next!

*1.5 stars*

DNF at 50% (7 hours of listening). I give 1 star for the book plus an additional 1/2 star for the narration, which was actually pretty good.

If you are a hard-core, die-hard Kristen Ashley fan, look the other way! Shield your eyes from this review because, I promise you, it will only make you mad!

I honestly don't get the appeal of KA. This is my 4th book from her and they ALL feel the SAME! The SAME! Those staccato sentences, the way the heroines are always wrong and figure out that the man was right all along, the helpless females... I actually think that her books have turned me off from "alpha males" for a long time.

Aside from the recycled plot, my biggest issue with this was Indy. I haven't met a heroine that personified "Too Stupid To Live" so perfectly in... maybe ever. How many times can a person get kidnapped? How many times can someone run into danger all for some coffee-weilding acquaintance? How many times can someone try to "leave the cops out of it" because she wants to handle it on her own? I just can't any more...

I wasn't even interested enough to see how Indy and Lee got on as a couple. And I can't stand how KA leaves in so many mundane details. This book was hours/100 pages too long. Just endless boring scenes...

I'm going to have to wait a couple of years before attempting another book by this author. I risk dismemberment by her fans and disownment from my friends who love her work every time I try to read another one of her stories.

Sorry, guys.

I'll keep this review short.

This is my first KA book and obviously not the last. Now I understand why everyone loves her and I want to read all her books. The plot, the characters and the writing style will definitely amaze you.Truth be told,I wasn't familiar with her writing style because it's unique. It took me a while to get used to it but I ended up loving it.

These two heros were so strong.Lee is dangerous and one of the sexiest Alpha males. His word is a vow,his kiss.... *happy sigh* Lee and Indy grew up together but he was alaways declining her efforts of being together.Indy grew up loving him.In the beginning it might have seemed like an innocent crush but years showed otherwise.

In the present,Indy is now a bookstore owner and she finds herself entangled with the mafia. It's not her fault though. Her employe,Rosie has a side job, which obvioulsy he screwed up with since the diamonds were lost. She is in a big rouble and only Lee can help her.

The story evolves beautifully and it catches your interest, especially the Lee-scenes ;)

What annoyed me:

Indy sometimes was way too stubborn and Lee was acting like a caveman.Well sometimes his cavemanish behaviour was cute but there were times where he was over reacting.

The word "YIKES"!!!

OMG I read it like a million times!! Is it a KA bad habit or it was just Indy's attitute of saying it,like a lot?

Overall it was an enjoyable read and I'm looking forward to reading more!I cant wait for Eddie's book!!

Indy, our female protagonist, is 30 but has the mental capacity of a 12-year-old an 8-yr-old. Very impetuous, irresponsible, stupid, and did I say stupid? Yes, extremely. Who gets kidnapped, punched in the face, stun-gunned, rescued and that very evening has this conversation:

“Where are we going to dinner?” I asked happily and Lee’s eyes slid sideways and his look made a definite promise of “later”, shattering any illusions of my being off the hook.
“Sushi Den,” Ally answered.
At those two words, Ally and I both immediately threw up our hands, index finger and pinkie extended in the famous, devil’s horns, “Rock On!” gesture and squealed, “Sushi!”

I didn't like Indy or the other characters so, sadly, I did a DNF. Sorry.

3.75 batshit crazy STARS

“Honey, it's good you're gorgeous or you'd be a pain in the ass.”

Finally. I've been meaning to get into KA's Rock Chick series for ages and suddenly the mood struck me. And here I am scrambling to write reviews, since I'm already on book three.

Rock Chick is book one in the series and is one of Kristen Ashley's older works (published in 2008) and I would say you can see the difference. We get the usual overly descriptive style, a world filled to the brink with detail, crazy stuff happening, slightly annoying heroines and bad-ass alpha males. But the writing is not as refined as it is in her older books. But to be honest I didn't care much. If there is one thing Ms. Ashley always accomplishes it is sucking me into her world and not letting me go until the end.

“Rule Number One in the India Savage Life Code: When in doubt or possible trouble, lie. ”

The story!

India Savage also known as 'Indy' is a used book shop owner, tough girl, redhead and a rock chick. She has been in love with Lee Nightingale since she was five years old when he was holding her hand during her mother's funeral. For the better part of her teenage years, Indy tried to get together with Lee, who also happens to be her best friends brother. She was very obvious and forward about it. That is until she was 20 and Lee told her in no uncertain terms that he viewed her as his little sister and doesn't want to be with her. So for the last ten years she has kept her distance and even actively avoided the love of her life.

What the rock chick doesn't know is that Lee has always had a thing for her as well. But the circumstances were never right and he felt the need to stay away. That is until things changed and he found Indy sleeping in his bed after being in hiding from...bad people who are looking for some diamonds.

That's where the patented KA-CRAZY comes into play. One of Indy's employees, her coffee guru gets himself into a bind and being who she is Indy gets stuck in the middle. Luckily Lee is some sort of PI/fixer/badass/scary guy, who is feared by Denver's criminal underworld.

And Lee is quick enough to use the position to his advantage...if only Indy and his crazy sister Ally weren't prone to look for danger and trouble, his life would be a whole lot easier. All kinds of drama and over the top shenanigans ensue!

“Your grandmother used to say that you were two souls separated in heaven. She mainly meant you were both trouble and deserved each other.”

I have to say, I'm not 100% sold on Lee and Indy as a couple. They have this amazing and complicated history, but I didn't get that warm and fuzzy feeling KA couples usually evoke in me. I'm pretty sure it's because of all the drama. There rarely was a quiet and peaceful moment for them to really convince me.

But then again all the drama is what makes this book so unbelievably hilarious and addictive. It's filled with strange characters and lovable things, I just couldn't put it down.

Sometimes it takes me a week to finish one small novella, but a full length KA novel with 500 or 600 pages doesn't face me AT ALL. Read it within a day. That's how addicted I am and that's also the way these stories completely captivate my time and mind. It's easy content, fluidly written and magically predictable.

I'm thinking the Rock Chick series is a bit of an acquired taste. KA on steroids if you will. Everything you know from her other books (if you have read them) is double crazy. There are car bombs on every turn, people getting kidnapped, being shot at is a question of 'when' and not 'if' and the chicks have a knack for ignoring male advice. And let me tell you, it's good advice. But do they listen? Nope. Where would be the fun in that?

Crazy ride. Amazing reading times all around.

Re-read Review - August 19-21, 2013

You know, I've got so much going on in my life. Most of its great, but some not so great, so I decided I need to surround myself with some totally kickass women and hot, alpha males... So here I am doing a Rock Chick re-read! And I'm. In. Heaven!

Spending time with Indy, Lee, Ally...the entire cast and crew...exactly what I need. I've been giggling my butt off and loving every minute. I'm bumping my rating up to 5 stars because Rock Chick deserves nothing less!

Original Review

Indy Savage had been crushing on Lee Nightingale since she was five years old, but time and time again she’d thrown herself at him only to be shot down. The final and most humiliating rebuff came ten years ago when Lee told Indy that she was like a sister to him, and from that time on Indy did all she could do to avoid him. But when Indy’s friend and employee, Rosie, becomes the target of some very bad guys, and Indy gets dragged into it, hard-ass, won’t-take-no-for-an-answer, private investigator Lee makes sure that Indy’s days of avoiding him are over, once and for all.

Rock Chick is funny, fast paced, sexy as all get out… exactly what I’ve come to expect from a Kristen Ashley story. Macho, hot, obnoxiously über alpha men and strong, independent, but loving and compassionate women pulled me in and kept me coming back for more. Lee and Indy make a great couple, and the supporting cast of friends and family kept me up until the wee hours of the morning, laughing out loud, fanning myself, and hoping it would never end.

Such a great start to the Rock Chick series!

Rock Chick (Rock Chick #1), Kristen Ashley

Based in Denver, the Rock Chick Series is nine (and a half) books that take you on the wild ride of the courtships of the Rock Chicks.

Indy Savage, cop's daughter, rock chick and used bookstore owner, has been in love with Lee Nightingale, once bad boy, now the man behind Nightingale Investigations, since she was five years old.

No matter what ingenious schemes Indy used to capture his attention, Lee never showed an interest and Indy finally gave up.

Now Indy's employee, Rosie, has lost a bag of diamonds and bad guys are shooting at him. When Indy gets involved, Lee is forced to help. Complicating matters, Lee has decided he's interested, Indy's decided she's not.

But she can't seem to keep Lee out of her life when she's repeatedly stun gunned, kidnapped and there are car bombs exploding (not to mention she's finding dead bodies).

Loved it...AGAIN!!

I think I'm going to have to do a KA marathon now. Once you start, you can't stop at just one.

The Rock Chick series is my happy place

I can’t believe I have never reviewed Rock Chick. This is by far one of my favourite books EVER!! Rock Chick is my go-to book when I need a pick me up. It’s funny, sweet, steamy and has one of the best alpha bossy heroes around.

In my everyday life, many things will trigger my need for a re-read. Someone mentions cashews and I automatically think of Indy’s kickass parties where she goes all out and even has cashews (WoW!). I’m feeling a bit sluggish and waiting for my coffee to brew, I think about trying the cup under the spout thing that Indy does (I’ve never attempted it mind you because I’m bound to stuff it up and spill coffee everywhere). It’s a Friday night and I’ve got no plans…why not live vicariously through Indy and be a Rock Chick for the night. I even hear Pearl Jam on the radio and it makes me chuckle that Indy stresses she’ll die before seeing Eddie Vedder in concert…which then gives me a bit of a buzz because I have (Ha Ha, I’m one-upping a book character). These are just some of the reasons why I keep going back again and again and again.

I’m not going to go too much into the story because there are heaps of reviews out there already. Obviously, I bloody love it. It’s bust a gut laughing, funny. There are sweet times that you can’t help but feel mushy, gushy over Lee. I love all the additional characters we meet in Indy’s adventures but special mention must go to Tex, Mr Kumar, The Kevster, Todd and Stevie, Duke and Brodie. You can’t help but grimace every time Coxy and his idiots show their faces, or when Dawn, Lee’s receptionist, swings her hips trying to tempt and seduce. By far, the best characters introduced...The Hot Bunch...Eddie, Mace, Vance and Hank.

I have read a few reviews talking about the way Lee treats Indy. There was concern that he mishandled her. Yes, he probably was a little forceful but I looked at it a little differently. Both Lee and Indy grew up together with all the banter, pranking and teasing that comes with being part of a family. No, they aren’t brother and sister (Ewww). It came across pretty clearly though that they feel comfortable to roughhouse, boss around and disobey each other. I never felt disgusted or sickened by it. I did…shake my head and make a tut, tut sound when Lee took things too far, or Indy disregarded Lee's well-meaning protection, but that was the Mum in me coming out.

Now…this narrator is the reason why I am now a fan of audio books. Sussanah Jones is AWESOME!! I love the way she changes her voice for characters. She’s very easy to listen to and understand. If you’re thinking about testing the waters with an audio book, it’s definitely worth checking out one of the books in this series.

For someone who runs her own independent bookstore/café, this woman never actually does any work. I’ve never seen an entrepreneur who naps most of the day and then has shenanigans with her bestie and her drag queen neighbour all night. This is fun and everything, but who are these people and how do they sustain themselves?

Also, this chick was kidnapped three times in this. THREE TIMES! 😵‍💫 KA musta ran out of plot.

DNF after 45%

This book has 14,189 ratings and the average rating is 4.26 Stars! 4.26!!!!

I don’t get it?? Am I weird for not liking it? Because I don’t think there was much to like. And I really tried :/
But maybe it’s just one of the books everyone loves but me =[

All I was reading was this:

What I liked:

► There were some funny parts^^

Sadly that’s also the only good point I have :/

What I didn't like: This is going to be longer o.o

Annoying characters: Was there any sane person in this book??

God, that girl needs a realty check, TSTL!!
The bad guys are after her. Does she care about the danger? No. Does she care about putting her friend in its way? No. -.-

Not to mention her “brilliant investigation skills”*insert sarcasm*. Which consider of driving somewhere and waiting for something to happen. She should have left this part to Lee or the police :/

But the thing about Indy that totally got on my nerves was her childish behavior. Indy is 30 and doesn't act like it. More like 13. So being stuck in here head was not a pleasant experience :D

2) Ally:

Most times I thought she was Indy Nr.2.

Crazy Indy + Crazy Ally=

It might have been nice if Ally would be less like Indy. Honestly I don’t know how those two were able to keep out of trouble for so long...

3) Lee:

The only character I actually liked at the beginning. He reminds me a lot of Hawke from Mystery Man.
The annoying thing about him was that we don’t know much about him. Yeah, he is a badass private investigator but if somebody asks about how he did something the answer is always: “He has his ways.”. I think this was meant to make him appear more mysterious but it actually just annoyed me.

4) The Villain/Coxy:

What the hell is wrong with this guy??? Seriously needs to work on his image!*eye-rolling*

And one of his his mean “minion” was called Teddy.... way to kill the bad guy image XD

5) Rosie: First of all horrible name :D [Btw Rosie is a guy]

I like coffee. But is this reason enough for someone to go around and risk your life? Well, maybe yes.

But it’s not about the coffee.(and all those coffee-god references started to get on my nerves) It’s about a guy that makes good coffee and which Indy doesn’t even really know.
I don’t know if he’s an important character or not. But he seems more like the explanation for the How-did-Indy-get-into-this-shit-question.

It dragged and dragged and dragged... I didn’t have any interest in the story.

So to sum it up: I didn’t care about the story nor did I like the characters. There are more things I didn't like but I think that's enough to explain why this book wasn't for me.

“Your grandmother used to say that you were two souls separated in heaven. She mainly meant you were both trouble and deserved each other.”

Rock Chick is the story of Indy and Lee. The two grew up together, always getting into shenanigans amongst Lee's siblings. But after being turned down one too many times by Lee, Indy has spent the last few years avoiding him.

Indy owns a bookstore/coffee shop and her best barista has brought chaos down on Indy's life involving diamonds, bad guys and pot. Indy ends up needing Lee to help her, and Lee decides it's finally time she stopped avoiding him.

“So, now you’re getting shot at, you’re gonna leave me?”
“Girlie, I’m from Texas. We shoot at each other to say good morning.”

I have to say I went into this with low expectations and enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. There are so many mixed reviews out there on this book, and these characters make appearances in other Ashley books so I knew it was worth a read. Many parts I was literally laughing out loud. But I can totally see how this book isn't for everyone.

I loved Indy as a character, such a free spirit and a cool gal. Lee was a little bit too........ alpha for me? To the point of his aggressiveness rubbed me the wrong way. But like I said, there were so many moments when I laughed while reading this book, I really enjoyed it overall and I am glad to see where Kristen Ashley got her start.

“You want to marry me?”
“No. I’m gonna marry you.”

2.5 Stars

Indy has been in love with her best friend’s brother Lee ever since she was a wee little girl. When she was a teenager she threw herself at him (pretty much literally) for the last time. That’s when he told her she was like a sister to him. For the past decade, Indy has avoided Lee as much possible, but has never fully been able to due to their families' combined celebrations of birthdays/holidays/generic Sunday backyard BBQs, etc. When Indy finds herself in a real pickle featuring one of her employees (who just happens to be everyone in town’s favorite coffee guru) and a bag of diamonds, Lee plants himself firmly in her life. She also finds out when it comes to how he used to only view her in a “sisterly” manner, that . . . .

“That was then, this is now.”

This had soooooo much potential. If you’re like me and have suffered through eleventy thousand Stephanie Plum stories, but can’t quit because they are your crack, you would have probably been all giggly schoolgirl upon starting this one too. Basically, Indy is a moron just like Stephanie. She gets kidnapped and blown up and shot at, etc., etc., etc. The difference here? SHE BANGS RANGER. Now, it takes a while to get there, but Lee is totally Ranger and they totally bang. (And you can just go ahead and spare me if you even are thinking of getting pissy and saying this isn’t like the Evanovich series because Kristen Ashley has in her mothereffing BIO that Evanovich is one of her influences.) So what went wrong?????

Ashley should have taken a bit more inspiration from Evanovich and realized that there was not enough story here for 400+ pages. I can get over the very loose “Rock Chick” gimmick – seriously girlfriend listened to rock music, wore denim miniskirts, bangles and big belt buckles and had a claim to fame of getting a little handsy with a guitar hero . . . .

To say the “Rock Chick” moniker was a bit of a stretch is the understatement of the year. Oh, and let’s talk about those clothes . . . .

Good Christ, I don’t need a description of every godblasted outfit the woman wore each day. There’s an old saying: “the devil’s in the details.” If that’s true, then Old Scratch must’ve had a front row seat during the writing of this one.

Some of you are probably asking why didn’t I just cut bait and DNF instead of letting it annoy the shit out of me for nearly three days? Well, because (1) KA really triggered the ol’ sploosh zone for me with one of her previous offerings, (2) this one had some of the aforementioned things going for it as well as having a pretty LOL-able bad guy . . . .

Think I’m kidding????

“He was short, had to be in his fifties and had jet-black hair with white at each temple. He looked like what I would guess a young Grandpa Munster would look like, except a lot more creepy and definitely scary, but not in a comic way.”

(3) It made me chuckle a few times. Not only because Indy was a loveable idiot, but also because of stuff like this . . . .

“Wear sexy panties tonight,” he said against my mouth. “I don’t have any other options except commando.” Lee’s arm tightened spasmodically right before he murmured, “Christ.”

Not to mention (4) I was not blessed with the ability to not finish something. Mainly because . . . .

It probably goes without saying that I won’t be continuing on with this series. I’m sure that won’t hurt Kristen Ashley’s feelings one little bit since she has a mass of fangirls. Seriously, I don’t know how y’all do it. I get that these are self-pubbed, but for Jeebus' sake at some point you have to . . . .

I can't imagine the eye twitch I would develop if I managed to get through SEVEN more (FFS!) of these things.

The Rock Chick series Buddy Read with some fellow hard core KA fans at Buddies Books and Baubles

After a binge of emotional KA reads this is exactly the shift I needed. Yes at times it is ridiculous and over the top but I was having so much fun that I didn’t care at all and it made it even that more enjoyable.

First there aren’t a lot of books out there where there are a great girl friendships happening but KA does better than most. Indy and Ally have been friends forever, they are practically sisters and if Ally had her way they would be sisters by marriage but her stupid brothers didn’t fall into that trap just yet. I love the girl friendship and banter between these two and how much trouble they got in together. Yeah sure it is a little out there at times but I love how much they would do to protect the other.

Second there is just Indy on her own. She is still a wild child even though she is about thirty now and she has a very peculiar way of looking at the world. It is so entertaining and laugh out loud funny that I can’t pick out which of her crazy freak-outs or commentary were the funniest.
“Late? We can’t be late! Dad loves you, Lee, but he’s not exactly jumping for joy that we’re together. We can’t be late the first time we go home for a barbeque!”
Lee’s face changed and his eyes became warm. “Are we together?”
Oh crap. I started thinking fast. “We’re not not together.”
“I’m not entirely certain what to do with that.”
I explained, “We’re not exactly together and were not not together. We’re in together limbo. We’re test driving together to see if we want to buy it.”

“They’re on a Lee and Indy Sex Watch.”
“Come again?”
“They want to know when we’ve done it.” Silence. I went on, “If we don’t do it soon, they might force us to at gunpoint.”
“I know. No pressure though. I told them we’re taking it slow.”
“You have to report in?” he asked.
“I kind of feel obliged,” I admitted.
“How’s that?”
I didn’t want to tell him I’d recruited them both for Lee Maneuvers in the past, so I said, “Never mind.”

“Let me get this straight,” he said, and I could tell he was laughing. “You dragged Eddie to Walgreens to help pick out condoms for me?”
“Well, I didn’t know! I’m not the kind of girl who keeps condoms around. That’s the guy’s job and you said we were gonna have to use different precautions.”
“Did you tell Eddie the part about long-lasting reliability?”

Seriously she is a hoot and mix in a drag queen neighbor, Vietnam Vet, a car chase, a few kidnappings, a bag of diamonds and a creepy drug pin and what else do you need for a good time.

Then there is Lee Nightingale, FINALLY we meet. In all the other KA reading I’ve done in the last three months he has popped up quite a few places with cameos. So I was so excited to meet him. Sure he is a KA alpha which means bossy, arrogant, hot, sexy, pushy, fantastic in bed etc…. you get the picture. But that also means that he gets moments of being sweet. What I really love about Indy and Lee is that they are so different the fit together perfectly. He is planning, control and protection while Indy is Calamity, chaos and affection (in a good way). Together they totally make sense and I loved that she had known him since childhood it made their romantic relationship even better.

General KA disclaimer - I seriously feel like I have to give this to every one of her series that I love. It doesn’t make sense, either you are going to love the OOT craziness of it or you are going to hate everything about this book. I seem to almost always fall on the side of love with KA but she is just my kind of crazy it seems.

I was in a need for some Kristen Ashley fix. And I often visit Rock chick crew for that.
This book makes me happy.
If I could switch places with one of them it would be Indy. Do I need to name the reasons?!
She has a bookstore/ coffee shop - both things I am addicted to.
She has an amazing group of friends. Besides her girls and Ally whom I adore, there is Tod and Tex- my favorite character in the whole series.
And she also has Liam. That needs no explaining.
Plus she is a redhead, I always wanted that hair color but could not pull it off.
I give this book all the stars and then some more.

I looove this book. My favorite in the series.
Indy & Lee are pure gold. It's KA at her best.
We have alpha hero, fearless heroine, loyal friends, crazy enemies, diamonds, drug dealers, and drag queen....aaaand Tex.
There is a lot of swoon-worthy kisses, stubborn women, and hilarious conversations...
It's one of those books that sets me in good mood. And I reread it once a year especially when I need my KA fix.
I highly recommend it!!!
All rock chick series books are amazing!!!
There is a lot of laughter, action, and coffee.
Rock chicks are forming their little club and it all starts with Indy.

This book is NSFW, or even NSFPR (not safe for public reading). Not because of inappropriate pics, but because you will laugh so hard that people will assume you are crazy. It could be helpful on public transportation - having some space to yourself and all.

Hey, are you reading Rock Chick?

When I first heard about it, I was assuming it was about some girl in a band, or a girl chasing a guy in a band. Not my thing. But, it isn't at all. It is a very funny story about a girl who has been in love with her best friend's brother since she was 5, and he finally wants to get together with her. She is also in grave danger because her coffee barista got her shot at, kidnapped 3 times, stun gunned, and the attention of a small-time mobster who looks like Grandpa Munster.

you'll always sparkle to me, sexy!

So our hero is Indy, a girl who owns a bookstore that doesn't sell many books but gets customers in through having her own coffee guy. He's an artist. Unfortunately, the artist has a side-job that involves marijuana, and said job has put him in some hot water which he immediately uses to make steam and make a kitty cat face in a caramel half-caff soy venti skinny cappuccino. And, he drags Indy into his problems.

yes, I'm aware that I probably said something wrong in the fictional coffee order. I admit that I don't drink that vile bitter weed juice...

Lee is the boy Indy has always loved. And, her bff's brother. They have plotted and schemed for Indy and Lee to get married since they were children - all in vain. But, Lee's all grown up now, and he finally admits that he sees Indy as more than his kid sister's friend. Also, he's a badass who decides to help her with her problem. Nobody is quite sure what Lee does, but they know he does something manly and brave, and there is even a secret bedroom in his apartment that is always locked. They call it Command Center. Lucky for Indy, she is now in the inner circle (meaning she's staying at his place):

I walked out of the bedroom to make coffee and stopped dead, staring at the Command Center door, which was open.
I expected that Lee was gone, off for a run, off to command mercenary troops in a drug war in Peru, off to put tracking devices on my car.
Instead I heard him talking on the phone like it was an everyday room and not the nerve center for an international commando cartel.

In Indy's eyes, though, it's too late for her and Lee. She spent too much of her life being rebuffed and humiliated by him. She's done with all of that.

"you're like my older brother."
"Is that why you tried to stick your tongue down my throat when you were fifteen?"
"And sixteen?"
"And seventeen?"
"Okay, okay, I get it. Jeez." I broke into his trip down memory lane.

Alright, but I can tell what you are thinking. So far this sounds like any modern chick-lit romance novel. And, you might be right. I don't read too many of those books. But still, this book is super funny. The hilarious situations, witty banter, and crazy characters make it LOL material for sure.

Indy has a bff named Ally and the two of them are like Lucy and Ethel with crazy capers. I love how they are together. Right after Indy takes out a hitman who was going towards Ally and they have the bad guys on the couch:

Eddie (cop friend) to Lee: "We gotta talk. Do you think Betty and Veronica here can keep an eye on these two?"
"I get to be Veronica," Ally said instantly.
I turned to her. "Why do you get to be Veronica?"
I didn't want to be Betty, Betty was a doormat. Veronica had attitude.

And, theirs was not the only great relationship. Indy's neighbors were a gay couple that are hilarious and awesome. I felt like the gay male friend role was written really well. I've had so many gay male friends (including my brother), and my daughter had a gay male best friend, and the author really nailed the fun and closeness of the relationship between fag and hag.

the REAL definition!

But, all the supporting characters were awesome. The story was awesome. The book was awesome. Everything was just awesome. Read it!

Update 10/19/21: I read this seven years ago and my reread was a listening experience. I remembered nothing so it felt like the first time. It was a completely different experience on audio and I mean that positively. There’s not a thing I’d change in my original review other than to comment on the narration. She nailed Indy and did a fine job with the other characters, especially the more unconventional ones.

Ever read one of those stories where what comes next is almost predictable but the details keep it fresh? Well, that's this book in a nutshell.

When Rock Chick Indy Savage finds herself in over her head with some seriously bad dudes, she lands on the doorstep of her best friend's brother, a seriously badass who she's been in love with since she was five years old. Lee Nightingale is scary himself and no one is really clear what side of the law his business falls on. He's prepared to handle things but Indy is pretty loyal to her friends and, well, she's a Rock Chick. It's not her nature to be taken care of.

This story is hilarious! Indy creates one train wreck after another as there are a number of people trying to find her friend Rosie and the diamonds he's supposed to have with him. Indy seems to collect strays and other bizarre folks routinely and it somehow makes sense. They just add to the craziness without it being too over the top. I laughed hard throughout this story and there are some gems that will just have you in tears. There are two scenes that bring a smile to my face just thinking about them.

Now, the romance between Indy and Lee takes some time to settle in but not for Lee. Once that page was turned he was all in. Indy needs some time to figure out how to manage this alpha male even if he's what's she's wanted for almost two decades.

The story isn't perfect and Indy has quite a few TSTL (too stupid to live) moments. But, oddly they work here. There's a huge cast of characters that I can't wait to see more of. I'm in for this incredible ride. This is my first book by Ashley and I'm excited to move forward in this series and a couple of others I already own. Stay tuned because I'll be back talking about the next book soon.

Honestly, I don't have a single positive thing to say about this one.
-The main plot line was boring.
-Lee handcuffed her TWICE without her permission.
-TWICE he pinned her down and she said "get off" and he didn't get off.
-He told her what to wear. Initially she said no, and then she said "fine" and changed.
-At the beginning of the novel, Lee tells Indy that she has to have sex with him in order to get him to do something. Although it's not exactly what ends up happening, Indy basically goes along with this instead of asking her cop dad or someone else for help.
-Indy was 30 and acted 16.
And I could go on and on and on but you get the point.

"My flirting is harmless"
"I'm still gonna ask you not to do it"
"Alright. I'll quit flirting."
"That's my girl"
My heart stopped beating. This was it. I was his girl.

"First you need to change into real clothes."
"You aren't wearin' that out of this house"
"Maybe we should have this conversation in an alternate universe where I care what you want me to wear"
**1 page later**
"Fine. I'll change."

10+++ Stars!!

Wow. I thought this would be good. It was incredible! Not one single sentence in this book was boring. There was always something happening, I was sometimes crying from laughing so hard. Loved both the hero and heroine, Indy is totally crazy and I loved her, not the tipical "oh my goodness I can't tie my shoelaces by myself" type, but the "I'm butting my nose in all the action even if I reeealy shouldn't" :D Lee was awsome, totally cool macho bad-ass type, and the reason I so love KA heroes <3 This one tops my list of KA favorites :) I was expecting something good and wasn't dissapointed :) Looking forward to the next one, Eddie <3 <3

This is my third time re reading this book.

Have to say, on the first read, I enjoyed it, but it was not my favourite of the series. I ended up in this book, getting the picture of Lee all wrong in my head, and it kind of spoilt the book for me (not the books fault, just one of those things)

However, I re read it the first time, after finishing the entire series, and enjoyed it much more, and it has become one of my favourite re reads, and I enjoy it more each time.

I love a friends to lovers story, and really like both Lee and Indy, and the entire world around Fortnum's and Nightingale Investigations that KA has imagined here.

Indy is a bit ditzy yes, and has the odd TSTL moments, but I really like her. And Lee is just great - calm and collected and so in love, and throughout the entire series, I fell in love with him more and more.
