A very hip, intelligent thriller set in London in the interweaving worlds of t.v., fashion, acting and the restaurant business. The narrator, Conrad, is telephoned by his ex-girlfriend Lily (a model/ actress), by whom he has been dumped six weeks before. He jumps at the chance to have dinner with her, after her original date has cancelled. As they sit talking at the restaurant, a bicycle courier enters, pulls out a very large gun, and shoots Lily dead. He then fires three shots at Conrad, leaving him for dead too. Six months later, Conrad leaves hospital. But the police won't tell him anything.

A girl from London gave me this book to read. She gave it to me for two reasons, she said. One, to show me how much better cover designs are in the UK than they are in the United States, and two, to show me the kind of high-quality prose being churned out by young British writers, and how it's generally higher in quality than young American writers' prose.

Number one is debatable, but ultimately I didn't really care. One shouldn't judge a book by its cover and all that. (Besides, everyone knows that the pinnacle of book cover design was in America in the 1960s.) Number two, on the other hand, was an easy call, at least for me. This was one of the worst, most self-indulgent pieces of crap I ever read. It comes off as a typical British "lad" trying to write a crime novel that's both "edgy" and "hip," while occasionally lapsing into stand-up comedian-esque monologues and taking time out two-thirds of the way through to unnecessarily indulge his fantasy about shagging his girlfriend's mum. Honestly, I have no idea why she picked this particular book to represent her nation. Maybe she never actually read it.

This is very enjoyable read - contemporary Britain, stylish people whose lives burst with erotic potential, and a glimpse into the hidden underbelly of life. Litt has a thriller that soon turns from a 'whodunnit' to a 'whydunnit'. And we DO want to know why.

As the story unfolds, what keeps us guessing to the end is who was really the victim in this crime. The target appears to be obvious, but all is not as it seems. Characterisation is strong, and the plot well structured, with convincing narrative. Litt is definitely finding a voice with this novel, and I am looking forward to more from him.

If I have any issue with the book, it is that somehow the reader never feels at risk. Frequent warnings and threats on his life don't seem to faze Conrad, and we aren't allowed to worry about him either. The descent into an underworld of criminals and violence is never sleazy or sordid, never uncomfortable. Litt should read some Christopher Fowler (SOHO BLACK would be a good place to start) on this score.

Malcolm Bradbury (writing in the Daily Mail) described this book as "...splendid characters, brilliant construction, and above all an unmistakable and sharply satirical style." Much as I admire Mr. Bradbury, I think all of these superlatives are overblown and too generous for this enjoyable but marginally flawed book.

The Plot:
CORPSING takes us on a slow motion ride through the event that changes Conrad Redman's life forever. Namely the murder of his ex-girlfriend Lily and his own attempted assassination, which happen within the first few pages. The rest of the novel is taken up with Conrad's search (after spending six weeks in a coma, and six months in recovery) for the reason and person or persons behind the hit.

Whodunnit is never in doubt - a dayglo lycra-clad bike courier is the one that pulls the trigger, six times, killing Lily and severely wounding Conrad. Over several interspersed chapters we are treated to minute examination of the damage wreaked by each of the bullets as they pass through the bodies of Lily and Conrad. Conrad's gradual awakening to the realities of life takes in Lily's ambivalent parents, her lovers and an ex-con darling of the comedy circuit. The result is not so much catharsis as unpleasant revelation...

The Author:
Toby Litt is a promising talent in the style of Charles Higson (he of 'Fast Show' and erstwhile punk band 'The Higsons' fame), and CORPSING was his third publication. Prior to this, he released a book of short stories, ADVENTURES IN CAPITALISM, and a novel, BEATNIKS. CORPSING is, as always, available from Amazon.

Oh, how I missed reading these very London sorts of novels: scheming, intrigue and shagging among loony eccentrics in the media! I confess to reading two Tony Parsons novels when I was sixteen and being entertained by the cosy bubble of London infidelities (before realising my error and picking up Camus the next month). I also read a few books by Sean Thomas and Sean Hughes which pounded that middle-aged middle-class media self-disgust thing to death.

Toby Litt can be excused because Corpsing straddles the line between accessible lit-fic and mainstream blokey fiction rather well. In this genre pastiche a TV producer attempts to solve the mystery of why someone shot him and his ex-girlfriend in a busy restaurant three times each. The narrative moves apace, our hero in the noir-ish mode but laregly unlikeable, delving a little deeper into the psychology of relationships when not entirely concerned with plot. But it's largely a plot affair.

Desalniettemin: puik leesvoer!

Clever, in a Clever kind of way. I was hooked from the start, lost my way for a while (Josephine... yuk, yuk and triple yuk) and ended a bit confused. The neat ending didn't work for me and left more questions than it answered. Nevertheless, I still enjoyed the pace and intrigue as Conrad tried to figure out who was behind the murder of his girlfriend and the attempted murder of himself. This might appeal more to fans of noir (or graphic descriptions of the effect of a bullet ripping through flesh), but it isn't one I'd read again.

Very enjoyable and funny action novel, which shares the same ingredients (albeit in a different ratio) as a few of my favourites such as 'Vinyl Detective', 'Beat the Reaper' and the 'The Gun Seller'. Overall it just inches out of deserving a 5/5 rating, sitting squarely at 4/5.

4 stars, a fun action-packed novel for poolside reading

This book was much more fun fifteen years ago when I didn't know better. As for now, transparent characters and a lads mag take on Tarantino means it's going back to the charity shop from whence it came.

So incredibly disappointed by this. Over-hyped, self-indulgent with a deeply dislikable protagonist and narrative voice. Definite thumbs down; heading straight for the charity shop.

Corpsing was a book I picked up on a whim, and a book that made me wish I hadn't even bothered.

The book is written in first person, and competent, but despite the supposedly tense premise, it never feels like anything is at stake within the novel. The writing never gets tenser or truly builds up the feeling that by chasing down the mystery of who killed his ex-girlfriend, Conrad is in any sort of danger. The scenes where Conrad arguably is in danger feel just like the rest of the novel -- slow, not very interesting, and more telling than showing.

In the beginning of the novel, supplementary text was added in the form of newspaper articles and hospital admission records. This felt like a neat touch and helped build an immersive feeling to the story. However, all of these articles were extremely short and the idea was rarely used after its initial debut, even when it would have been easy to include them, such as showing us the articles written fin time with the events currently happening in the novel. An article about the events at the end of the novel, or perhaps some police records at the very end with the actual evidence that Conrad was looking for would have been much more interesting than the two chapter exposition dump that explained the whole mystery.

Conrad, the main character, is the least interesting or relatable character that I have come across in a while. This is a man that decides (in the graveyard where she is buried) to hook up with his dead ex-girlfriend's mother. Despite that being horrifying and interesting, and something that could have been explored later and had actual consequences, the whole scene is stale and boring. It does not have a profound effect on Conrad later in the novel, it just happens, almost if for the shock factor of it. I found it incredibly hard -- almost impossible -- to have any emotional connection to Conrad. By page 60 I found myself wishing that he had died on the operating table.

None of the characters in Corpsing had any sort of personality. All of them felt flat, and unrealistic. Litt tried to make it feel like Conrad had actual emotions, but it was often hit and miss. Any other character felt like they had no emotions at all, and were more of blank puppets for the author to move at will. None of the characters felt fleshed out at all, and were disposable.

Overall: I managed to finish the book, but it was disappointing and bland, made entirely of unremarkable characters, a mystery that we don't solve but is told to us via exposition at the very end of the books, and cringeworthy pose.

The writing is a tier above typical crime novels, but it also lacks typical crime goodies. It’s too light, has no edging atmosphere, and loses it’s mystery-tension midway.
Litt doesn’t show enough for something other than genre fiction, either - not witty and observant enough. Gets really crass and puerile at times.

The narration is top class.. the deep thoughts of the main character are beautifully described.. The description of bullets doing the damage seems to have shown result of lot of research done by author. The twists were fine and all in all a good read.

I almost didn't read this book. After the first few pages, I thought, "Ugh. It's so Clever." But I kept at it, and I'm glad I did. This is clever, no doubt; it's hip, and modern, and flippant, and breezy... but it's also real, and serious, and intense, and moving, and funny. This is the kind of book that Jonathan Safran Foer wishes he could write, stuck there in his hipster Manhattan. It's the kind of book that Dave Eggers would turn out if he could stop taking himself so damn seriously. I enjoyed it immensely, and recommend it without reservation to everyone who wants to believe that the kids these days can actually write worth a damn.

I have read 'Corpsing' in a single day. Well, I finished the last dozen pages upon waking. For me to be so engrossed in a novel is something of a marvel.

The first five chapters happen in the first nine pages. He does this to give the sense of hitting the ground running. The pacing is perfect and his writing is fluid.

I will not go into the story because anything I say will only taint your own chance at experiencing this excellent thriller for yourself. Drop what you are doing and get this book...

I don't usually like 1st person POV but from the blurb I'd thought I'd give it a go. The Daily Mail says that I will laugh more than once from reading the first 12 pages. I didn't. In fact, I don't think I laughed once. Through the book is fairly long at over 350 pages, I read it quite quickly, probably because the chapters were really short. One chapter right at the end was only three lines long!!! It was an enjoyable read although I did lose a bit of interest when Conrad went to bed with Josephine - yuk yuk and double yuk.

Tengo.

This gripped me from the first few pages, and the plot unfolds neatly.

I empathised with the main character in quite a few places, and it certainly made me think about past relationships and how things twisted and turned during them.

Some elements seem a little "pat", but this is only fiction after all....

I started off really liking the style of book , I found Toby Litt writing engaging enough to keep me interested. I found the chapters describing the effects of bullets hitting Lilly and Conrad fantastic.
However in end I felt little disappointed with story. But if you are fan of noir or thrillers. I do believe you find the story of corpsing a good read.

Not bad: well paced, good plot, but a lack of characters one can empathise with is the fatal flaw, pretty much everybody is a typical Londoner git, out for what they can get and sod everyone else. This may be the point of the book, perhaps, but there's no moral centre to it. The cover image, Lily - geddit? - is horrible.
