Eugene Lambert is a refugee from the world of science and engineering, and a graduate from Bath Spa University's MA in Writing For Young People. When not scribbling away in his cabin, he flies gliders and goes for long walks. The rumours of him suffering from a severe work allergy and being an identical twin are both true...

Eugene's debut SF thriller, The Sign of One, was shortlisted for the AM Heath’s Irish Children’s Prize 2013 and the Bath Novel Award 2014. It is published by Egmont UK, on their Electric Monkey imprint. He is represented by the irrepressible Ben Illis (the-bia.com)

I've just sent in the first draft and should be hearing back from my editor, Stella Paskins at Egmont, soon. Exciting!(less)

When I'm stuck I just keep battering away at the problem until I get through it. This can be fairly miserable (understatement), but I feel the ongoing struggle forces my subconscious to keep working away in the background and come up with the answer in the end. This 'technique' has worked on several grim occasions, which gives me the confidence to use it the next time. Incidentally, my main 'blocks' always are to do with plot points, e.g. making sure a character would be motivated to act as I want them to. Many the hour I have spent staring wretchedly into space, surrounded by dozens of crumpled-up pieces of paper ... :-) (less)

SF - What's In A Name?

descriptionTo mark the publication of Into The No Zone , the second book in my The Sign Of One trilogy, Egmont asked me to do a blog. I chose to write about Science Fiction, where the genre name came from, and why it might not be best genre name ever.

One of the later Albert Campion novels, and - I confess - not a favourite. For a start, it's a much darker story than usual, probably a reflection of being written in the early 1960s, with contemporary fictional tastes changing towards grim reality a ...more

"I am a huge fan of Marjory Allingham's Campion books - but even so, I have to say this is probably one to avoid, unless, like me, you want to have read the entire canon. One of Allingham's late contributions, written in the 1960s four decades after t" Read more of this review »

Read this in the hardback first edition (alas, rather a scruffy one minus the dust cover) and thoroughly enjoyed it. Classic Andre Norton fare, with a young protagonist, Dard Nordis, caught up in events beyond his control. The last few 'Free Scientis ...more

A truly excellent anthology of 'golden age' crime short stories, featuring such luminaries as Dorothy L. Sayers, Freeman Wills Crofts and Carter Dickson. My favourite story though was the last one, "How's Your Mother?" by Simon Brett. Superb. ...more

A fascinating, magical and wildly imaginative glimpse into life in Tokyo after dark, revolving around an unremarkable middle-aged night-taxi driver called Matsui, the fares he picks up and the lives he touches. It's a brilliantly constructed piece of ...more

A lovely anthology, with an introduction from Sam Moskowitz, that contains three short novels from some of the greats of early SciFi, with an emphasis - as the collection's title suggests - on stories that contained the fundamental 'sense of wonder' ...more
