Hi Maxine!

Yes; I am currently working on my next book, and have managed to write about 30% of the first draft (assuming I know how long the first draft will be, of course!).

After this second book, I have already outlined another 4 stand-alone books, to varying degrees of detail.

And then, of course, there could be follow-ups to any of these novels...maybe even a Bled 2, who knows?

I am also poking around the idea of getting a crowd-funded movie of Bled off the ground, but that really is a massive undertaking, and so will require a lot of thought and planning.

For now, my aim is to promote Bled into the Amazon best-selling list for this Christmas (crossed fingers!) and get my next book out for next Christmas. (less)

I was deeply embroiled in finishing my latest (2nd) novel, Cheated, and then kicking off my third novel. (I like to keep the momentum going - I find if I have a few balls in the air - one book with beta readers, one book being written, another brewing - I am happier as a writer.)

Onto your question:

My approach to planning my books is a mixture of planning and flying by the seat of my pants.

I don't like to overcook a story, as it turns me off the story; too much planning and I'm bored as I've already written the story once...no point in writing it a second time in long form.

However, I do like to have a good, solid idea of what the book is about, the primary characters, and their driving forces / desires, before I start. Some books, like Bled, I outline in a burst of inspiration, and then go back to and flesh out a piece at a time until the idea feels fully germinated in my mind (and heart), then I begin writing. Quite often the story then takes over as the characters are born; most characters don't like too much direction - they want to do what is natural for them to do. The trick is to just let them get on with it, and trust in the strength of the core idea of the book - the characters are born of the book idea, and therefore will bring it along its best possible path to its best possible conclusion. (Apologies for using 'best possible' twice there - I'm just plain lazy with synonyms sometimes.)

The depth and breadth of how my outline depends on the maturity of the idea, or how excited I get when I start writing the outline. Chances are, if the outline is too long, I get distracted, and when I go to write the book, I go off at right angles...so too much outlining is almost a waste of time for me.

Here's the rub - when I am in the story, and the characters have taken hold, and begin to pull the story along with the strength of their personalities and their own character arcs, I do start trying to 'steer' through the rapids of creativity. This is where the gentle touch of an oar in the rapids of plot and action can really do well to keep the book on track. Yet stick your oar in at the wrong time, or wrong angle, and the whole thing will turn over, dumping you, character, story, plot and all into the roaring waters, to drown in a chaos of broken end points and lost ideas.

But guide yourself carefully along, and you can end up with a workable piece of fiction (unpolished of course).

As any author will agree, writing is in the rewriting. It is also one of the most pleasurable parts of being an author (aside from that satisfying 'The End' moment when a book's first draft is finished).

There - I've gone off and written an essay to answer a question that could have probably been answered with a more simple, "Yes, I do plan my books in advance, but I only stick to a rough outline, as going into too much detail kills the excitement of discovering the story as I write."

So there you have it - the long answer, and the short one.

Thanks for playing - and please do ask more if you like!(less)

This review made me laugh out loud!

Jules Mortimer wrote a review that made me laugh out loud, with quotes like she thought “the author might wish to attend…some intensive counselling.” (How’d you guess? It’s going well, thanks for asking. More books to come! They always say you have to lance a boil and squeeze all the puss out. And boy is there a LOT of puss!)

What really cracked me up was Jules’s comment that “this book did
