“How is it possible that society should escape destruction if the moral tie be not strengthened in proportion as the political tie is relaxed? and what can be done with a people which is its own master, if it be not submissive to the Divinity?”

“For libertarians, human rights are freedoms, which must be protected by the state in order to safeguard the sovereignty of the individual. For socialists, human rights are claims, which must be satisfied by the state in order to offer a viable and dignified life to all its citizens. Libertarians defend individual freedom against the state; socialists defend the state against individual freedom. We see this vividly in the current disputes over education and healthcare, with libertarians arguing for choice and socialists arguing for equal provision, something that only the state can attempt, and then only by removing choices from the active, the ambitious, and the strong.”

“Despotism may govern without faith, but liberty cannot. Religion is much more necessary in the republic..., than in the monarchy...; and it is more needed in democratic republics than in any others.”

“Now the evil that accompanies one good, is the privation of another good. Never therefore would evil be sought after, not even accidentally, unless the good that accompanies the evil were more desired than the good of which the evil is the privation.”
