I read this book when I was in middle school around 2010. The book begins with a war going on and there is a family that their son gets drafted. So the little girl in the family somehow ends up in the forest and someone in her family told her not to look at a foxes eyes for too long or you will turn into a fox. So when she goes to the forest she finds a fox and the fox speaks to her and tells her that it's not true so when she looks straight at the foxes eyes they switch bodies. I can't remember the rest only that it was about her journey to look for the fox who took her body. And she meets a lot of animals and such.
