While I have read some of these authors, there are also many on my to-read list, which made this an interesting way to get more of those I like and get an introduction to those I want to learn more about.

Honor & … by Sandra Brown and C.J. Box, a story of Lee Coburn and Joe Pickett, was a three-star rating. Sandra Brown is an author I have previously read a single book from and found it to be an enjoyable read, although it did not have me immediately diving into more. After reading this, I am curious about the Lee Coburn story. Likewise, C.J. Box left me eager to dive into the Joe Pickett books as I have never read them before. Honor & … was a nice introduction to both characters, allowing me to learn about them both while watching an interesting story play out. I will be honest and say I found it a little too quick and easy – there were some elements I wanted a bit more intensity from – but this was not enough to lessen my enjoyment.

Footloose by Val McDermid and Peter James, a story of Tony Hill and Roy Grace, was a four-star rating. Val McDermid is an author whose work I have previously consistently enjoyed, and I have been meaning to read the Tony Hill and Carol Jardan series for years (especially as I enjoyed the television series the books inspired). Peter James did not grab me with the first Roy Grace book, yet my enjoyment of this story has me considering giving it another try. Footloose was a story that hooked me with ease, leaving me rapidly turning the pages. It contained enough ridiculous feet puns to keep me smiling without taking away from the story, ensuring I could not get enough.

Faking a Murder by Kathy Reichs and Lee Child, a story of Temperance Brennan and Jack Reacher, was a four-star rating. Kathy Reichs is an author I have been meaning to read for years, especially as I enjoyed the Bones television series. Lee Child is an author I find to be a bit of a hit-or-miss for me, yet I repeatedly return to the Jack Reacher series as they hook me more often than not. Faking a Murder was a story that hooked me with ease, leaving me eager to see how things would come together. It had elements of what I (based upon what I know of the series) imagine to be strong examples of the Temperance Brennan stories that mixed well with the things I know are consistent with the Jack Reacher stories. Together, it made for an addictive read on multiple levels.

Past Prologue by Diana Gabaldon and Steve Berry, a story of Claire Randall Fraser and Cotton Malone was a three-star rating. Diana Gabaldon is an author that is well-known and loved, yet I never went beyond the first Outlander book. It was okay, but it did not blow me away. Thus, it is safe to say I only have the most surface level knowledge of that universe. Steve Berry, on the other hand, is an author I have not read before. Even with this lack of knowledge, it felt very much like the Outlander element was thrown in simply because it needed to be. Any other time travel world could have been used, and I doubt I would have noticed the difference. As it was, the story was interesting, yet it did not blow my mind. It kept me turning the pages, yet there was nothing that had me feeling as though I needed to read more about Claire Randall Fraser or Cotton Malone. Thus, sadly, for me, this one was rather forgettable. Decent enough for a three-star rating, but nothing to shout about.

Rambo on Their Minds by Gayle Lynds and David Morrell, a story of Liz Sansborough and Rambo, was a four-star rating. Both were new-to-me authors, and I was given an education on the fact that Rambo is based upon a book. I feel like this is information I should have know years ago. Clearly, I have been living under a rock. Although Rambo does not make an appearance in this story, I loved the way it played upon the fact that Rambo is such a well-known character from the movie. It created some entertaining moments, ensuring I was hooked on the way things developed throughout. It certainly left me curious about the Liz Sansborough books and has me wanting to pick up Rambo to see how it (clearly) differs to the movie.

Short Story by Karin Slaughter and Michael Koryta, a story of Jeffrey Tolliver and Lincoln Perry, was a four-star rating. I am a big fan of Karin Slaughter, so I was excited to dive into this story. Meanwhile, Michael Koryta’s Lincoln Perry was a new character for me. Without a doubt, this was a story that had me unable to put it down. I was sucked in with ease and found myself powering through it. Although it does not go deep into Jeffrey Tolliver’s life, the little details this added were enjoyable. In terms of Lincoln Perry, it has ensured I wish to read more. The two authors worked wonderfully together, creating an experience that makes it easy to image the characters coming together again in the futures.

Dig Here by Charlaine Harris and Andrew Gross, a story of Harper Connelly and Ty Hauck, was a three-star rating. Charlaine Harris is an author I have read on multiple occasions, although I have not read any of the Harper Connelly stories. I find the author’s work to be easy reads, yet they never quite wow me in the way they seem to wow other people. They certainly have me curious enough to read more, but they are never a priority. Andrew Gross is an author I have read once. It was a standalone that had me reading it with ease, yet it did not wow me to the level that I went hunting for more of the author’s work. Thus, Ty Hauck was another new character. While an easy enough read, the combination of these characters left me with the same experience that I have with the authors in general. It was engaging enough to keep me turning the pages, yet there was nothing that really stood out to me.

Deserves to Be Dead by Lisa Jackson and John Sandford, a story of Regan Pescoli and Virgil Flowers, was a three-star rating. Lisa Jackson is an author whose work has repeatedly caught my attention. I have read a single standalone novel from the author and found it to be a decent read, although it did not quite hit as hard as I had hoped. It did, however, leave me curious about the author’s other work (and with the belief that I picked the wrong book as my starting point). John Sandford was a new name. Thus, together, this was another story with new-to-me characters. I will be honest and say that it took a while for me to get into this story. Once the thriller elements kicked in properly, I became more engaged, yet it never hit quite as hard as I had hoped. I think this is largely because of the crime handled in the book – I expected much more depth and impact from it. While engaging, I wanted more.
