There are four ways to show personality: what the author tells us directly, what the character says, what the character does, and what the other characters say. Information from the author is reliable, but it runs afoul of the “Show, Don’t Tell” rule. Information we get from the character herself is immediate and moving, but — especially in this case — can be misleading. When what the character tells us comes into conflict with how she acts, it gets very interesting.

Because like all of us, Runa thinks she’s acting logically. She is a small, weak person surviving in a hostile world, and she must do what she can to stay safe. As the opening chapters progress, readers get suspicious that they need to take a step back and get some outside data to realize that she is completely traumatized, acting like a frightened wild creature. And here we come into a more complex way of getting information; we observe the other characters, analyze their personalities, and then watch how they react with Runa. Then we begin to get a picture of what is really going on. From that point, we are free to observe her progress as she develops from a frightened street urchin into a heroine of epic proportions.

So, this becomes a story of the intertwining of sympathetic personalities, forming into a team to battle a truly horrific villain. This conflict develops into an epic final battle which makes up for a lack of physical action in the rest of the book.

The epic style of the story could be a problem for some readers. It is a long novel (in the 600-page range). It covers a complex society with a long history, and the author wants to tell us all about it. So, when an ancient myth or event impinges on the plotline, an appropriate character steps up to tell us the story. When a new setting appears, we get a full description. Only one factor can redeem all this “telling:” a writer who is talented enough to make each detour entertaining and important to us.

Highly recommended for fans of l-o-o-o-ng Epic Fantasy and fine writing.

The fractured plotline could be confusing, jumping back and forth between the girl she was and the grandmother she is, but the author is very clear with chapter and section headings and use of people’s names, and the issue does not arise.

This is powerful writing technique couched in soft emotions. The style creates intensity of feeling through first person point of view and present tense. The writer paints pictures and moods with evocative sensory imagery that draws us into the magical world where the heroine lives

There is a touch of magical realism, with a carefully developed and easily believable metaphysical framework of shamanism that murmurs an underlying chorus to the woman’s practical daily life.

The story has a serious theme that is discussed often, but the immediacy of its application to the main character’s situation and the depth of our empathy makes it seem appropriate.

I found little to complain about in the writing. There are some rather stretched coincidences and convenient outcomes, but reasonable for a Romantic Fantasy. I wasn’t happy with the imposition of Science Fiction heritage on the society. A common rule in writing: don’t mix your magics. It struck a sour note with me and added little to the theme or plot of the story.

Oh, yes, and please learn the difference between “lie” and “lay.” “I lay on my bed,” is correct if you’re speaking in past tense, but this story is written in present tense, which makes the small error even more confusing.

This is a tale that encompasses everything in the circle of life: grief and joy, conflict and peace, hatred and love, life and finally, death. But it is joy that wins. A sweet story, recommended particularly for the old and the young, but also for everyone in between.

The Sci-Fi and historical background is imaginative and functions well. This makes it a good read.

But I must explain why I gave the book only three stars; it is full of small writing errors. They are easily fixable, but every one of them disturbs the reader’s involvement with the story and characters, reducing the emotional impact of the story.

A common error is the old “show don’t tell” device, telling us all about something that would be better shown by action and dialogue.

“Tell me more about life in the mountains,” she asked gently, encouraging Ester to talk,

“Encouraging Ester to talk” is superfluous; we already saw it happen.

And here is an unnecessary explanation combined with a chronological order slip:

“Once on the plate she would be lowered to the ground, and could wheel herself into the house. Ester helped her out of the pod and into the wheelchair, and then they rolled her onto the lift plate.”

First, we get “told” the operating lesson. Then we jump back in time and are “shown” it actually happening. Minor but confusing. Anything that forces readers to stop, say “Huh?” and go back to check on a detail throws them out of their involvement with the story.

The result is too much author interference between the readers and the action. Most readers don’t recognize this; they just get the feeling that the story is going on and on and there’s not much happening.

An example of a Sci-Fi dip into esoterica that works is the detailed description of the care and tactical uses of the alien’s war steeds. This sidebar occurs a fair way into the story, when we have already seen them in battle, and when the hero’s personal mount has been injured. We have reason to care about these animals, and we enjoy the extra time we get with them.

The ending gives us a satisfying wrap up to the short term conflicts. In the long term, the epilogue sets us up for the next book in the trilogy. ...more

Then the author can set up an effective and believable conflict within that context. One disadvantage of the Internet is that authors have access to a great variety of magical environments, and there is a temptation to dabble in a whole lot of them.

“Avalon” is a very modern paranormal novel, with characters casually looking up summoning rites on the internet and taking cell phone pictures of ghosts and demons. There are also influences from traditional religion (Old Testament, Christianity, and Apocrypha). Eastern meditation techniques and an alien computer from before the Flood. There is even a recording device called a “Spirit Box” that “picks up radio and other frequencies,” which one character orders up on the Internet for a next-day delivery. A little too much of a good thing.

The story divides neatly into three novellas that are too closely tied to make three separate books.
The first half of the novel is where the problems lie. It simply takes the author too long to settle into his stride. The plotline and the motivation of the characters are hazy, and the expected atmosphere of mystery and fear does not show up.

Part of the problem is a matter-of-fact writing style that is emotionally flat. There is too much discussion about who is staying at the mansion and who is going back to town, creating fuss unrelated to the plot that the reader doesn’t need. It is only after the first hundred pages that the Book of Horus and the Avalon Splinter show up as points of conflict, and the suspense begins to rise.

In the second section the magic settles down, the antagonists become clear, and the conflict is more straightforward. We get a hundred pages of reasonable suspense with a clear partial ending.

Then something called the Spirit Anchor takes precedence, and off we go again. Another hundred-page episode with a slightly less focused plotline, but a good climax with better suspense.

The author tosses in a pinch of infidelity to spice it up, but the relationships are entered and broken with such a lack of intensity that no real conflict arises.

This writer uses a scattergun approach and gives us a book that is more interesting than emotional, which is not what that average paranormal reader wants.

And therein lies a problem. There is a tiny subgenre of the Fantasy book world that is peopled by scholars and nerds who just love this sort of thing.

Unfortunately, most of that same little cadre consists of Sci-Fi/Fantasy fanatics who read a great deal of those genres. For example, my qualifications as a reviewer include writing two novels a year and reviewing thirty or forty more.

These experienced readers are looking for quality in everything, not just the writing style. The story is about the problem of naïvety, but they don’t want to spend time with people who are quite that stupid. They are looking for excellence in the little details. They don’t want to notice that one day our heroes are paying one dragon scale for a couple of drinks, and the next day they’re renting a boat for only four. And the whole flying pig concept is supposed to stretch reality until it becomes funny, but for the mature reader, it just doesn’t make it.

Teenage graphic novel readers with little experience in the real and written world are quite happy with this level of sophistication, and a volume of a hundred pages or so is the perfect length for them.

The two main characters are likely to appeal to that age group, as their thought processes are quite believable, and their dialogue is bang-on. However, that demographic has no interest in hearing half a dozen different honorifics for a dragon, none of which is “dragon.” Nor are they likely to catch the allusions and parodies promised in the introduction. Not that readers of that sort are likely to get past the introduction and the poetry and the second paragraph of Chapter One (which is two pages long), without putting the book down and walking away.

In the final analysis, this book was written for two separate mutually exclusive audiences, so despite some very clever writing, I don’t know who to recommend it to.

But nobody listens to a philosophical rant, so writers attract our attention with a striking cover and entertain us with interesting characters, conflict and suspense, all the while demonstrating the theme they want us to learn. Sort of like watching the ads for the free video games on your cell.

“Hell, Yeah!” is Military Action Adventure Space Opera, aimed at a specific readership: young, male and rebellious. In order to keep that reader involved there needs to be a whole lot of rebellion, violence, humour, and sex. And very little theme.

The main attraction for the book is humour. Characters have names like Slaughter, Grimfoyle and Odious. Acronyms are a specialty, including “Forward Imperial SecuriTy Service,” “Daily Intelligence Review Transmission,” and “Combat Armament and Reactive Armor Protective Advanced Combat Equipment,’ which the author was forced to admit was a bit of a stretch.

Ships are called Chernobyl, Putin, and Richard Nixon. They are filled with creative weaponry like “antimatter death missiles,” and costumes such as “calf-hugging, high heeled jackboots.” And every title has “Death” in it: “Death Stalker,” “Death Lord,” and “Master Chief Death Runner.” Other bits of random creativity sprinkle the story. “Odious had once taken a personality test. It came back negative.” I would have appreciated more of this fun creativity.

When it comes to the sex attraction, I’d say it underperforms. There’s certainly enough talking about sex (humorously kinky), but very little action.

As far as military action, there is galactic-scope mayhem in a few major battles, but not the amount needed to keep the teenage mind focused when the jokes flag.

Underneath the flippancy there is serious research and yes, a theme. The chapter on psychological interrogation techniques was interesting and thoroughly explained. There are also chapter divisions, each with a page or so of galactic history, none of which has much to do with the real story. Except for the odd entertaining non-sequitur, these read a whole lot like a history textbook.

And the rest of the story is devoted to the main character’s attempts to hold her position in an evil empire while acting on a twisted but basically humanistic morality. That part works.

A fun read for Military Action fans, but a bit too much serious stuff. ...more

The only chance humans have to hold onto their past is wild-card unpredictable creativity. And the computer is rewriting a version of history with the heroes erased.

That synopsis gives you an idea of the depth and thoughtfulness of this book. The conflict continues on various levels, drawing from ancient mythology, various conspiracy theories and a healthy dose of modern computer philosophy. We (and the characters) are never sure whether the cryptic messages come from Andromeda, the invention of Samuel Morse or Jewish Kabbalah.

The writing style is seriously poetic, using powerful imagery and metaphor to draw readers into the experience. Thematically, the story discusses the possibility of the individual being able to make a free choice. The answer seems to be that life is a melody with the tune already written, but how the musicians play the music is up to them.

There is a lot of repetition in the dialogue, with the same ideas being tossed around in different forms. But we need it. As the characters gradually dig deeper into the programming of reality, they learn what’s going on, and readers do too.

The action sequences are scattered through the programming and discussion, but there is a key moment around page 400 where the heroes make a decision to start writing their own code, to jolt the computer into a reset. From this point the conflict is more clear to us, and the physical action picks up as well.

This book is not an easy read. It teems with esoteric discussion, but the intensity of the feelings of the wonderful characters carries us through. We progress more smoothly once we realize that it is not necessary to understand the complex ideas in detail; it is enough that the characters do. The reading experience is enhanced if we let the poetry carry us away, and we can ride on the emotions of the individuals to an ending that reaffirms the power of the creative human soul.

And if you finish the book and still want more of the discussion, read the appendix. Wow!
